• how to revert non-corrupted mssql database with stopat

  i have a good, working valid non-corrupted database in mssql that i want to revert to a point in time how is that done? the standard RESTORE command requires a full backup as a starting point, and then log backups thereafter. i cant understand why this must be done from a backup. if my db is good and the logs are OK, why cant i just revert with a STOPAT from the live logs in the db? one dba suggested that whenever i want to restore i should THEN make a log backup and then RESTORE with STOPAT. i believe it would work but sounds a little backwards any better ideas? thank you very much

• How to loop through all illustrator files in a folder (CS6)

  I have written some JavaScript to save .ai files to two separate locations with different resolutions, one of them being cropped to a reduced size art board. (Courtesy of John Otterud / Articmill for the main part). There are other variables in the script that I am not using at present but I want to leave the functionality there for a later date/additional layers to export/other resolutions etc. I can't get it to loop through all files in a folder. I cannot find the script that works - or insert it at the right place. I can get as far a selecting the folder and I suppose creating an array but after that what next? • Weird send() problem (with Wireshark log)

  I had another question about this issue, but I didn't ask properly, so here I go again! I'm sending a file by sending it in chunks. Right now, I'm playing around with different numbers for the size of that chunk, to see what size is the most efficient. When testing on the localhost, any chunk size seems to work fine. But when I tested it over the network, it seems like the maximum chunk size is 8191 bytes. If I try anything higher, the transfer becomes extremely, painfully, slow. To show what happens, here are the first 100 lines of Wireshark logs when I use a chunk size of 8191 bytes, and when I use a chunk size of 8192 bytes: (the sender is 192.168.0.102, and the receiver is 192.168.0.100) 8191: http://pastebin.com/E7jFFY4p 8192: http://pastebin.com/9P2rYa1p Notice how in the 8192 log, on line 33, the receiver takes a long time to ACK the data. This happens again on line 103 and line 132. I believe this delay is the root of the problem. Note that I have not modified the SO_SNDBUF option nor the TCP_NODELAY option. So my question is, why am I getting delayed ACKs when sending files in chunks of 8192 bytes, when everything works fine when using chunks of 8191 bytes? Edit: As an experiment, I tried to do the file transfer in the other direction (from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.102), and surprisingly, any number worked! (Although numbers around 8000 seemed to perform the smoothest). So then the problem is with my computer! But I'm really not sure what to check for.   Hi, Following an attack, I need to remove 4 lines of text added to .htaccess files in my site, and was thinking SED would be the way to go, but cannot see how in spire of many attempts. The added lines are RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http:// RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !%{HTTP_HOST} RewriteRule . http://targeturlhere.net/%{REMOTE_ADDR} I managed to create the script to remove added htaccess files containing those lines only, but for existing htaccess files in which that was appended I have to edit the file and cannot delete it. I cannot just remove line by line nor use "RewriteEngine On" as the start marker, as this instruction "RewriteEngine On" is sometimes legitimate elsewhere in the file. In most cases those lines are the last, but I guess in other files they could be in the middle, so I was trying to remove exactly that block - and have a script I could reuse in a similar case. (Edit: my 4 lines are below one another, no blank line in between but the editor here seems to either show no breakline, or one adding a blank line) Any hint or tip ? Thanks.

  I have a php script which takes a relative pathname via $_GET, reads that file and creates a thumbnail of it. I dont want the user to be able to read any file from the server. Only files from a certain directory should be allowed, otherwiese the script should exit(). Here is my folder structure: files/ <-- all files from this folder are public my_stuff/ <-- this is the folder of my script that reads the files My script is accessed via mydomain.com/my_stuff/script.php?pathname=files/some.jpg. What should not be allowed e. g.: mydomain.com/my_stuff/script.php?pathname=files/../db_login.php So, here is the relevant part of the script in my_stuff folder: ... $pathname = $_GET['pathname']; $pathname = realpath('../' . $_GET['pathname']); if(strpos($pathname, '/files/') === false) exit('Error'); ... I am not really sure about that approach, doesnt seem too safe for me. Anyone with a better idea?

• Coda 2 and SCP uploading files with the wrong permission

  Currently I have a basic Ubuntu server running a website. The website is for a few students learning HTML/PHP and each student has their own account with a symbolic link to the shared website folder. Since the students are working on the website together, each user needs to be able to modify all the files (index.html for example). So I created a Webdev group containing all of the students with the default umask of 0002 set in their .bashrc (This allows newly created files to be 774). The shared folder is owned by the group Webdev with a chmod g+s so that new files/folders also belong to the group Webdev. The problem is that the students are using an IDE (Coda 2) and when they create a new file or folder using the IDE the file has the permissions of 644 on the server (not group writable). However when I make a new file through connecting with Cyberduck (SFTP client) the file permissions are 664 (as they should be). So I don't understand why Coda would be any different. However, after some trial and error I believe that Coda is first creating the file on local disk and then uploading that file to the server. On a mac by default a newly created file is 644. When the client uploads a file that's already 644 it stays 644 on the server side (umask is kind of useless in this situation). I've also tried creating ACL permissions for that folder but an uploaded file from my mac via SCP doesn't get the default ACL permissions. In Coda there is an option to change file permissions on a transfer. However this option seems to apply a chmod to all files being uploaded or saved. When one of students is modifying a file created by someone else when they try to upload the file or save it Coda tries to also do a chmod but fails because that user isn't the owner of the file. My current solution is using bindfs... I mount the shared web folder and bindfs sets permissions and group ownership of newly created files. However, bindfs seems to be a bit slow and I'm sure there is a better solution. Even if the students ditched Coda 2 and used Mac vim with scp the newly created files on the server would behave the same (644) which is default on the mac. Other options... 1) Either I teach the students to use (ssh/chmod) with their IDE to change their own file permissions when uploading. 2) I make all the students' Macs have the default umask of 0002 which would upload files with the right permissions. 3) Write a corn script to fix the file permissions every 5 to 15 minutes... (This option I think is the worst if students are working together at the same time). Is there any way that I could make all files that are uploaded via SCP have the default file permissions of 664 even though the uploaded file has a lower permission? (After hours of searching I don't think this is possible) I guess a corn script is my best option for novice users. • Linux: prevent VNC from swapping like mad

  I'm accessing a MacMini (with MacOS X 10.4) from my Linux machine using VNC and there's an issue that is driving me crazy... My Linux machine has 4 GB of ram and I run a lot of various apps on it and I've got no issue at all. It's all snappy and don't hear the hard disk swapping/read/writing too often. Now with VNC, the hard disk is swapping like mad... When I'm moving things on the OS X desktop. So I was thinking of creating a ramdisk and forcing the temp VNC files to go into that ramdisk but the problem is I can't find any temp files. I've attempted to do that: #!/bin/bash while [ true ] do lsof | grep vnc done And eyeball parse the output to try to find some temp file: no luck. The VNC version I'm using is this one: $ vncviewer -version VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Jan 30 2009 19:33:16 Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd. No matter how much data is coming from the Mac, there should be plenty of memory (4 GB of ram) so there's really no reason to swap like crazy. This is driving me mad. Any help as to how I could solve this problem is most welcome because this is literally driving me nuts.

  I'm writing an application for storing lots of images (size <5MB) on an ext3 filesystem, this is what I have for now. After some searching here on serverfault I have decided for a structure of directories like this: 000/000/000000001.jpg ... 236/519/236519107.jpg This structure will allow me to save up to 1'000'000'000 images as I'll store a max of 1'000 images in each leaf. I've created it, from a theoretical point of view seems ok to me (though I've no experience on this), but I want to find out what will happen when there will be directories full of files in there. A question about creating this structure: is it better to create it all in one go (takes approx 50 minutes on my pc) or should I create directories as they are needed? From a developer point of view I think the first option is better (no extra waiting time for the user), but from a sysadmin point of view, is this ok? I've thought I could do as if the filesystem is already under the running application, I'll make a script that will save images as fast as it can, monitoring things as follows: how much time does it take for an image to be saved when there is no or little space used? how does this change when the space starts to be used up? how much time does it take for an image to be read from a random leaf? Does this change a lot when there are lots of files? Does launching this command sync; echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches has any sense at all? Is this the only thing I have to do to have a clean start if I want to start over again with my tests? Do you have any suggestions or corrections?

  Hey, I have a CentOS VPS running Apache with a phpBB installation. One specific user has received errors when posting a message or logging in to the forum. The following issue has arisen in parallel to installing nginx, which serves only the static files of my site. Not sure if this is only coincidence. Furthermore, my setup uses redirects (in some cases, double-redirects) to point the user to a different virtual folder. So, the forum is seen to be at /translation/ but the actual files are found in /phpbb/. I'm at a loss as to what may be the underlying issue. My server? The person's ISP? She has tested both at home and at work, with similar issues.   I have purchased a comodo ssl cert and have submitted the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) generated by my server to the ssl management site. With the 3 files it returned me with, - AddTrustExternalCARoot.crt - PositiveSSLCA2.crt - www_mydomainname_com.crt I have uploaded them to my /etc/ssl/ssl-certs folder and have updated my virtual host in my sites-available and restarted accordingly. • Improving performance by using an additional static file server

  Hello there, I´m planning for a large website that includes many static assets (js, css, images and thumbnails) in the generated pages. That website will use TYPO3 as CMS (is is a customer requirement). I guess I could seriously improve performance / page load times by using a two server setup. One server where the main application (PHP) runs and another one where the static files sit being served by a trimmed down version of apache or something like lighthttpd. Including e. g. js or css files from the file server is of course no big deal. Just use an absolute url http://static.example.com/js/main.js and be done with it. But: that website will have pages with MANY thumbnails of e. g. product images on it. So I see two problems when the main application tries to create a thumbnail of some image: the original image like products/some.jpg is uploaded on the static file server and therefore not on the same server as the PHP application which tries to create the thumbnail. TYPO3 writes created thumbnails to a temp directory which is expected to be on the same server. Therefore, hundreds of thumbnails will be written and served from that temp directory which is on the same server as the main application - the static file server is in that case basically useless, all thumbnails will be requested from the server of the main application. So, my question is: how to overcome this shortcomings? Is it possible to "symlink" some directories to another server? So, for example, if PHP tries to open the original products image for thumbnail creation with imagecreate("products/some.jpg") the products folder actually "points" to the products folder on the static image server? I know something like this can be done with .htaccess but is it possible on file system level?

• Something like Dropbox for local use

  I am looking for a solution to sync folder pairs between a NAS and multiple local macs. Each of the macs could edit files and the other macs should then get synced automatically. Basically my own local version of Dropbox without using "cloud-storage". I have looked into solutions using rsync. As I understand it rsync is not really capable of doing a bi-directional sync. I also do not want to necessarily invoke the sync process. I would prefer a daemon running in the background - waiting and checking for changes and then syncing them "live". The program should also be flexible enough to recognize that it sometimes (in the case with laptops) can not reach the NAS. It should then just wait for the connection to be back again, without bugging me ever few minutes. I have looked into synk, folderwatch, rsync and a few others, but I haven't really found a solution. Isn't there something like "offline folders" from microsoft for the mac? Thanks PS: just for clarification - I don't want to sync for backup purposes, instead I am wanting to sync so that all macs have a local copy of the most recent changes to files.

• Permissions for Multiple User VPS

  I have a Linode VPS server that I have recently setup and am migrating to from Mediatemple, where I have a VPS managed by Plesk. I dislike the Plesk interface and the mess it makes of a lot of things, but appreciated its ability to allow multiple people access to different domains on a server. I have most everything setup the way I would like it, but am having issues with permissions for my domain directories. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Apache 2 as my web server. I have domains successfully located in /var/www/vhosts/domainname.com but have to modify files as root in order to add/change files for the domains. I would like to setup access with the following criteria: Each domain can have a user assigned to it (and allow for the same user to manage multiple domains - could even create symlinks in their home folder to their domains) Certain users will have shell access and may be chrooted to the domain directory they control FTP needs to be setup and able to correctly access the domains so that content editors for each domain can upload/download without permissions issues I am relatively new to linux sysadmin and have searched for a good guide to help solve these issues but haven't been able to find one yet. • Webalizer causing high CPU load

  We use webalizer to generate reports on our Apache access logs - it is useful in conjunction with Google Analytics. The problem is that webalizer uses ALOT of CPU when running. If I run top I can see two perl processes with 90% CPU - this slows down the machine and therefore the website for our users.   I have a Windows 2003 R2 machine that is giving an Event ID 8197 about once an hour and ten minutes. The full error is attached below. The machine is primary used to host IIS webpages and SMTP. There is no known scheduled tasks on the machine. I have read a lot of Google Search and Microsoft docs, but none of the suggestions found there have any impact. What I am curious is if there is any way to convert the SRMVOLMC81 and SRMVOLMC57 into mount point data so I could at least know where the error is sourcing from (there are no related errors in the logs, just the 8197 every hour and ten).   Firstly, my machines aren't compromised any person suggesting such will be DV'd. The security logs on some of my networks client machines (all Windows Xp Sp3) get filled with these useless error messages. Security Failure Audit Detailed Tracking Event ID: 861 User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE The Windows Firewall has detected an application listening for incoming traffic. Name: - Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe Process identifier: 976 User account: NETWORK SERVICE User domain: NT AUTHORITY Service: Yes RPC server: No IP version: IPv4 IP protocol: UDP Port number: 55035 Allowed: No User notified: No It's always on various random ports of UDP so setting up a port exception isn't really an option. It's always from svchost or lsass both of which are running services from DLLs. One of the most offending processes seems to the be DnsCache. I have in my global policy under AT < Network < Network Connection < Widnows Firewall < Domain Profile (I haven't changed any standard profile options do both need configured? To allow remote administration and desktop exceptions and have a custom program exception list that has %SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe:*:enabled:svchost (Windows won't allow you to add this exception on a local machine but it let me have it on here in the global policy it just doesn't seem to do anything) %SystemRoot%\system32\lsass.exe:*enabled:lsass (I think this one ended all of my LSASS messages) %SystemRoot%\system32\dnsrslvr.dll:*:enabled:dnscache (I tried adding the dll itself to the exception list, this didn't seem to do anything) Is there really any other options left other than disabling the Windows Firewall entirely, disabling auditing entirely or just changing the event viewer to just auto overwrite when needed? I'd much rather fix the problem and get rid of these entries ever being created instead of just trying to cover up the problem.

• Upgrading PHP on MacOSX without config_vars.mk ?

  Hi everyone, I want to upgrade my php version running on MAMP to 5.3. I've copied the ./configure statement from phpinfo() and downloaded the 5.3 branch source i wish to compile. However, when i try to compile it i get an error about a missing config_vars.mk file from apxs. How can i solve this issue if i do not have the config_vars.mk? can one be deprecated? can i copy the one from the stock apache that comes installed on OS X (SL)? What will happen if i remove --with-apxs from the configure line? Thanks in advance for any help. It is greatly appreciated. Ken.
