Does writing zeros to an entire ssd (dd if=/dev/zero of/dev/sdX) give the same performance restoring effect that you get from a "secure erase", or does secure erase do something else as well?
Is there a way to ignore spelling and grammar for certain text styles in Word 2007?
Some of the stuff I'm writing is pre-formatted text that looks like this and usually has stuff like if (str.length() != 3) which will give me the squiggly lines on misspelled words like the str in there.
I recently installed This arabic font package (for the coolness!) and I want to try writing with it but they show up as BOXES in Word 2007.
Why? how can I make the glyphs show up properly?
I'm running sites on two Cpanel accounts on my VPS on WHM.
I'm using DSO php handler and Apache server on my Web server. After recent intrusion attacks I've chowned to root with permission 555 on $HOME and public_html folder. I'm on VPS with Cpanel on Centos.
I'm running CMS based software like Joomla Drupal etc.
Will this cause any problem to my VPS installation or server side processes? Drupal, Joomla, MyBB etc will not be affected by this. Some files will not be created like error_log.
At least hackers will not be able to place any malicious code within home folder or the public_html folder.
After reinstalling my OS from Kubuntu 12.10 to Kubuntu 14.04, VIM has changed its behaviour when editing Python files. Though before the reinstall all file types had noexpandtab and tabstop=4 set, now in Python those values are expandtab and tabstop=8, checked also via VIM behaviour and also via asking VIM set foo?.
Non-Python files retain the noexpandtab and tabstop=4 behaviour that I prefer.
The .vim direcotry and .vimrc were not touched during the reinstall. It can be seen that no files in .vimrc have been touched in months (with the exception of the irrelevant .netrwhist):

Though .vimrc has been touched since the reinstall, it was only me testing to see where the problem is.
How can I tell what is settingexpandtab and tabstop?
Side note: I'm not even sure what I should read in the built-in help for this issue. I started with ":h plugin" but that did not help other than showing me that the following plugins are loaded (possibly relevant):

I need a cluster filesystem for an iSCSI device. The problem is that the servers to which it is connected generate datafiles which must be read by every other servers. Except for the writing and deleting of such files, I do not need a full locking scheme like in OCFS2 or GFS2.
So, can I use a distributed lock manager (DLM) on top of an ext3 filesystem or must I use only specialized filesystem ?
Hello
In a traditional Windows Server 2003 environment with AD, we have shared a folder for our policy documents (MS Word). These documents get edited/updated now and then by the administrator(principal of college). Users only have read-only access to the folder, but they can still save-as and then change the content.
Sharepoint is a possible solution but not easy to implement. We also thought of using a CMS on Linux and installing Joomla to let users only view the docs with a document management system... but is it possible to automatically retrieve the policy folder on the network and convert or put it in a format that users can only view and not copy?
We also thought of saving the docs to secure pdf format but the principal wants an automated system. Basically she just wants to work in Word and the policies must be available to staff members on the network.
Any ideas? Much appreciated.
I am currently running 4 cassandra nodes with the following hardware in a Apache Cassandra cluster:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
8G RAM
750G hard disk
It shows not such a good writing performance and a really bad read
performance with sometimes also timeouts. I was wondering if it makes
sense to add 2 nodes with a different hardware (8 CPUs and more RAM)
to improve this. Or does a cassandra cluster works best with the same
hardware in every node?
Thanks & best regards
I am looking for patterns in the user journey of converted customers. I have each customers details in a row and then each step of the journey in it's own cell in columns, with up to 12 steps for each customer.
For example if I want to find the count of every customer who at any point in their journey has for example, downloaded a pdf and contacted us via email, what formula is best suited to this? I've tried countifs but couldn't get it to work over multiple columns.
Thank you.
I recently looked at my router log. Why are a lot of requests that I don't send originated from a computer in my home network?
They do not look like 3rd-party advertisements / images embedded in a page. The request have patterns, such as:
top-visitor.com/look.php
www.dottip.com/search/result.php?aff=8755&req=nickelodeon+games
www.placeca.com/search/result.php?aff=3778&req=wireless+cell+phone
www.bb5a.com/search.php?username=3348&keywords=flights
www.blazerbox.com/search.php?username=2341&keywords=colorado+springs+real+estate
www.freeautosource.com/search.php?username=sun100&keywords=vehicle
www.1sp2.com/search.php?username=20190&keywords=las+the+hotel+vegas
www.loadgeo.com/search/result.php?aff=10357&req=winamp
www.exalt123.com/portal.php?ref=seo2007
www.7catalogs.com/search.php?username=la24&keywords=shutter
www.theloaninstitute.com/search.php?username=kevin&keywords=webcam
www.grammt.com/search.php?username=2530&keywords=bob
And there are hundreds of these requests send within a second.
So what's happening?
I've done some searching and there doesn't appear to be a method of migrating old 2003 based profiles to the new "V2" profiles automatically. Specifically, we're interested in retaining the <Profile>.NK2 file in Outlook, the Favorites folder, and the Signatures folder.
I'm in the process of writing a fairly complicated migration script that'll be executed at login, but seems like this is something that I shouldn't have to do.
The User Migration Tool appears to only work for Vista, not 2008 R2. Any other ideas?
Hi,
I've been using FTP Synchronizer for awhile and generally have had pretty good results with it. But, I've just moved to a Mac full-time (at work as well as home now) so want to get a native client if I can.
I've tried the only one that I've found - SuperFlexibleSynchronizer - but it crashed every time I loaded up an FTP to FTP synch attempt.
The most important features to me are: 1) ability to synch with a large number of files (thousands), as I generally work on sites with large number of files. 2) FTP to FTP synch. This would be very helpful as I work with some CMS based sites for which users upload files while on staging and don't want to move files locally first before moving live.
Thanks!
Evan
I have my tv connected to my Windows XP pc's nvidia GeForce 8500 GT.
I am constantly switching between single display and clone display.
Is there a way to script these settings? I would be fine with writing a batch file or a .net program to do it.
When I want to use my tv I right click the nVidia tray icon - nView Display Settings - Clone - TV + Acer Monitor
When I want to switch back to only my moniter, I right click the nVidia tray icon - nView Display Settings - Single Display - Acer Monitor
I connect to a share on a windows server and I have a quota of unknown size. All the tools I have seen are reporting the disk size/disk free space, not the quota size for myself.
The only way I can figure out my quotas is to keep writing junk until I reach the quota. There must be a better way than this?
My PC is windows XP and the servers are mainly 2003server.
I'm looking to find a way to update some Windows Defender settings via command line, gpo etc.
From my research it looks like windows defender creates a hidden scheduled task named 'MP Scheduled Scan', but modifying this task does not seem to make a difference as to what shows up in the Windows Defender UI.
I have also done some process monitoring to see what data Windows Defender uses and I can see that it reads/writes to the 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan' ScheduleDay key, but if I attempt to modify this key, I get an "Error Writing the new values contents" error message.
I'm writing a download manager, and I've noticed that all the web pages I've encountered don't seem to set the ContentLength header, whereas other media types (images) do. However, when I load a page (in Firefox), I get a progress as it loads. What's that based off if not file size?
Is there a way using openldap to ensure that a user's password does not contain their name or their username?
I know that you can use the ppolicy overlay pwdCheckModule by writing a C function to do password checking, but is this the best approach? It doesn't seem like many folks are doing password quality checking this way--the only example I've found is a github example which only does basic checking.
I'm trying to install Umbraco CMS on Windows 7 64-bit and I get the following exception:
[HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load file or assembly 'ImageManipulation, Version=1.0.2105.41209, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission required.
The application pool's trust mode is set to 'Full', all the user permissions are just as on other sites hosted on the same machine. I went through all relevant topics on Umbraco's forum, but all advices are about the trust level.
How do I fix this?
As a log viewer, which of vim's features are convenient?
less -F is quite good.
But I believe vim could be better if we knew its hidden features.
* or #
v//d
g//d
etc..
PS. I don't use vim as a code writing tool.
I'm just curious, how to compress latest (2.6.32 at time of writing) kernel using UPX?
It worked well for older kernels but now repacked with UPX kernel fails to boot, standard compression methods (gzip, bzip2, lzma) work fine though.
I've seen offerings such as VPSs (Linode, Rackspace Cloud), which are very cheap but you're on your own, and managed hosting (Engine Yard, Rackspace), which are very expensive but they do all the system administration for you, in some cases even writing your deploy scripts.
Is there any kind of middle-ground option where I don't have to pay the huge flat rate for the management, but can still request specific sysadmin tasks to be carried out and pay on an hourly basis?
Hi, I tried to format my harddisk (160 GB) with the following command
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda
After some 3 hours, following error came up:
dd: writing to '/dev/sda' : No space left on device
312581809+0 records in
312581808+0 records out
160041885696 bytes (160 GB) copied, 10708.3 s, 14.9 MB/s
Any idea what went wrong?
In my web app, I'm toying with the idea of giving my user the opportunity to select a subdomain of their choosing, so they could select something like:
foobar.myapp.com
where foobar is their chosen subdomain. What is the proper way to go about setting up something like this? .htaccess? Have some api for writing virtual hosts? The application would still always map to one directory on my sever, I just want to give theme a custom URL.
We have a repository of documents in HTML and text that we're looking to get into PDF format, but my boss (another developer) feels that writing this portion of the application will detract from the main development that we're doing at the moment.
Is anyone aware of any services that will be able to do bulk conversions of these documents to PDF? Any services that will also provide thumbnails for the documents is something we're looking for as well.
I have a command I am running produces a ton of output, I want to silence the output without writing to a file. I have used the following to send all output to a file, but again I don't want any file output:
command > out.txt 2>&1
I have used command > /bin/null on my CentOS box before, but I can't find a similar thing for windows.
