I'm really annoyed when I uninstall a program and then it opens up internet explorer.
Can I change this to a portable web browser?Or even prevent the uninstalled program to open up a web browser.
Is there a way to (alphabetically or in other way) to sort program list in the Start=Programs menu?
When installing / uninstalling programs this menu is added-removed, but not sorted, and sometimes takes time to find a nested program in this list.
I have Windows XP, but think the same situation could be applied and on the other versions of Windows.
I was wondering if there was a way to schedule automatic FTP site backup with any free or open-source software?
Clients like FileZilla do not have an automatic backup (ftp download) option. Is there a way to schedule this with any program, by using the windows task scheduler?
Or maybe we need to use a macro program like imacro in combination with FireFTP to do the job? Do you think using macro is a feasible and secure(reliable) solution?
I want to digitize some index cards with my camera. I'm looking for a program that would automatically fix geometry on the shots (as you would expect the cards come tilted on the picture).
I have an app (droid scan lite) on my android phone that does exactly that, but I would prefer to do it on my pc (the phone camera has poor quality and it's slow and focuses badly while I have a decent slr). If the program is open source it's an advantage, cross platform -- even more so.
I'm trying to run the SharePoint 'stsadm' command using 'runas /user:spsetup "stsadm args...". The user authenticates, and the program runs, but it runs in a new console window which closes immediately upon termination of the 'stsadm' program. What can I do to keep it open?
I have a mailing list with 100,000 email addresses, and I have to send it an email weekly.
What application/program/webapp/script/etc do I have to use to send 100,000 emails weekly and avoid being considered a spammer?
No program for only Windows or Mac please. I use Linux.
Hi,
I want to blog on a Wordpress account, without having to upload pictures manually.
I'm looking for a program that allows you to edit text + simple formatting + pictures, and lets you publish it to your blog in one step, taking care of uploading both the text and the pictures. Does anyone know of such a program?
Thanks.

When I boot into Windows Vista, Microsoft Security Essentials is set to run when the system starts. When I open the program, it says Microsoft Security Essentials isn't monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. It tells me that it can't update definitions or enable real time protection unless I do it manually (every time I boot). Is there a way I can fix this so I always have real time protection and updating?

I have followed this http://www.lancelhoff.com/how-to-run-a-program-in-vista-with-administrator-rights/
to run a program in compatibility mode and as administrator but it doesn't work.
Is it because it's a bug of Vista or of the software ?
I am trying to get an alert from monit if it fails to restart a service 5 times, but I get a syntax error
/etc/monit/monit.d/engine.conf:5: Error: syntax error 'alert'
this is the engine.conf file:
check process engine with pidfile /var/run/engine.pid
group engine
start program = "/etc/init.d/engine start"
stop program = "/etc/init.d/engine stop"
if 5 restarts within 5 cycles then alert
any idea what's wrong with it?
I'm currently running Defraggler on my system, as it's fast, seems to be effective, and has a nice clean interface; it's also the program the other techs recommend to me. I've also heard good things about JKDefrag.
Which program do you find you get the best results with?
I saw some answers to this question however they were fairly old (at least 2 years) and primarily for Vista or previous Windows OS versions. My question is this:
Is there a program that allows a single Windows 7 computer to have multiple users (2 needed) and allow for two mice and two keyboards on two screens.
What I'm trying to achieve:
I'd like for the ability to play a game on one monitor while another person surfs the web, uses a program, or possibly play a different game.
Any ideas?

Hello,
I'm trying to create a custom proxy program but I have a problem.
My program connects to a fixed port from a random port and I need to tunnel all this traffic by my local proxy.
I think the solution is using iptables, but all the topics I found are related to redirect incoming connections, not outbounds.
How can I redirect all the traffic from a local port to another local port and later to the internet?
Thanks,
Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10sek. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessarry boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sek I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program?
Thanks
I know there is a program called upstart that can make it easy to make small daemons. I can't get this program to configure on CentOS. I get all sort of errors concerning pkg-congfig, libnih, and dbus.
I am working on a node.ja application and this is a pain to start and stop all the time, so I want to create a deamon for this which makes it easy to start and stop.
I've just found that my WSS 3.0 server had two OWSTIMER.EXE services running:
SharePoint Timer Service
v11
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\BIN\OWSTIMER.EXE"
Windows SharePoint Services Timer
v12
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\OWSTIMER.EXE"
Since I'm running WSS v3, I was expecting to have only one SharePoint Timer instance, and that should be the one in th "12" folder.
Should I just stop the other service and keep only the "Windows SharePoint Services Timer" (v12) running?
I have an executable file "x" stored in a directory. I want to be able to execute program "x" by typing "x" from anywhere in terminal. Currently I have to be in the programs directory and type "./x" to run the program. How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance.
I am trying to copy a database from one folder to another. There is no program at all running except operating system.(I mean all windows shut)
I keep getting this :
The action cannot be completed because
the file is open is another program
close file and try again
Try again, Try again , Try again .........
what the hell on earth is holding that file and how can I carry on with copy / delete / overwrite files(DB) as this problem is something very common.
Thanks
I'm trying to make an offline version of a web and I'm looking for a tool that would do the task automatically for the whole web (circa 1000 pages of HTML + images). Is there anything like that and free?
I know it is quite challenge for a program but maybe I'll be lucky :).
EDIT: It should be a program for Windows.
Thanks!
I have auto recovery on my Excel program and I save my work several times a day. Tonight, I turned on the computer and it had shut down down for some apparent reason. When I pulled up my Excel program it only showed one auto recovery file form 8am this morning even though I worked/added onto my Excel sheet for several hours this afternoon.
Is there any way to recover my work I did this afternoon?
I have Chrome associated with .xlsx file on windows 8.1 machine
In Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations it is not possible to remove association only to change it to another program.
In Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations , .xlsx is not present in Chrome.
I removed all keys from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xlsx
Still Chrome remains associated with that extension in Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations, Windows Explorer shows the Chrome icon with the .xlsx file.
