  • SQL Server 2005 / 2008 Licensing question

    I have read up online, and through some threads here like this one. But I'm still confused and need to see if anyone can shed some light. My company is deploying a clickonce application that will be on multiple computers (about 50). It will be accessing an SQL Server database and I was wondering what kind of SQL Server licensing should I/need to have? The application currently logs in via SQL Server authentication using one SQL Server user. It seems logical that I would just need one user CAL and even through there will be up to 50 connections it should all still work. Am I right?

  • SQL Server tempdb question

    From what I understand the system database is used to hold temporary tables, intermediate results and other temporary information. On one of my database instances I have a tempdb that is seems very large (30GB). This database has not been modified (as in "last modified date" on the mdf file) in over a week. Is it normal to have the temp db remain that large for that long of a period? It seems to me that it should be updating fairly often and returning space that it is using fairly quickly... Am I way off here or is SQL Server doing something weird? FYI: This is a SharePoint 2010 database, not sure if that makes a difference.

    Hi all, I have a terminal server, with a bunch of users running MS Office 2007 std in. Some of them have recently been asking for better multilanguage support. Since I'm in a select agreement, I've gone into the Volume Licensing Service Center and downloaded the following three ISOs: Office Multilanguage Packs 2007 (DVD) Office Multilanguage Packs 2007 (CD) Office Multilanguage Pack 2007 Service Pack 1 But having mounted the ISOs in my RDS host, I still can't install anything they contain. I am quite probably doing something wrong, or maybe I need to be running Office pro version? please F1

  • SQL Server 2008 lincensing question relating to web servers

    We purchased SQL Server 2008 Standard licences last year under the server + device CAL licencing model. Since our server has 2 physical CPUs and only 46 clients, this option was by far the cheapest. Now we'd like to be able to query a small number of stored procedures from our Windows Server 2003 Web Edition server, which is in a seperate zone on our firewall. I think SQL Server 2008 Web Edition could be an option to us, but is it possible to replicate/mirror stored procedures and tables to such a server and would we be breaking any rules by doing so? Is this a form of multiplexing? Also, would replication/mirroring work both ways, if we were to want to write back data from the web server?

  • Hyper-V 2008 R2 Install Question

    I have 500GB HDD that I installed on the server. If I am going to load Hyper-V r2 on the bare system, do I set the partition to use all this space or is there a recommend smaller partition size I should set for Hyper-V to run within? This is my first time loading Hyper-V bare to the system. I feel like I should be able to create a small partition of like 40GB for Hyper-V to run within. Then create a second larger partion to store my VM images. Any thoughts or guidance on this?

  • Getting rid of a trojan. SVCHOST question

    My antivirus keeps notifying me of a trojan. svchost.exe keeps creating some 'drivers' (.sys files in the drivers directory under system32 of my Windows XP installation) each of which is marked as Bubnix.AB trojan. The antivirus fails to remove many of the files as they are immediately used by svchost (I presume). How do I find out which service is the culprit? Why can't the antivirus effectively rid me of this plague? Also, how many svchost processes is it normal to have running at any one time? I am using Win XP SP3, and ESET NOD32 antivirus.

  • File permissions question

    I just switched my site's server from Windows to Linux, and am finally able to control file permissions from my ftp. So, seeing that all permissions were 705 by default (and not wanting just anyone to have permission to execute), I went and changed everything to 744. Now, gif and jpg links don't work, pdf download links don't work, php links don't load, and mov files don't play. Conversely, all html files work perfectly. Setting things back doesn't seem to help. Even setting to 777 gets me nowhere. Any ideas on what might be going wrong? I've been googling file permissions all day (solved that problem with the Windows-Linux switch, which has bred a new problem), and I don't think anything I can find has escaped my attention. This is the rule that forward all 80 traffic to my squid3.1 server at DMZ DNAT loc:!10.0.0.126 dmz:172.16.0.198:3128 tcp 80 - !172.16.0.198 Ok, I need to add more ips to avoid transparent proxy. I tried loc:!10.0.0.134,!10.0.0.126...but didnt work (also similars like [ip0,ip1]. I tried to google the answer cant find it (sorry no matches, not searching the right keywords) also I tried to read the docs, but they are really long (and indexes dont help me). Thanks!

    We currently have three networks, X.X.163.1, X.X.93.1 and 192.168.1.1. Today's setup is like this: http://i.imgur.com/tkKWy.jpg We now have PPT VPN from internet to the X.X.163.1-network, but really need to access the files from the File Server through VPN. I am also aware that this setup is not optimal. So please, any advices on how to redesign our network? Rack servers are mostly web and db servers, with only public IP addresses.

    I have been getting various attempts to connect to ports on my shorewall firewall. The ports that I keep seeing connection attempts at are tcp 44444, tcp 44446, udp 55555 and every now and then some slight variation. I ran "netstat -a" and did not see anything listening on those ports. Is this something that I should be worried about or is it just some rouge computers out there? I have noticed alot of the ip addresses are from Spain and Mexico. But, as I am fresher to Java, even learning after their architecture, I cannot decide which framework can be used with what type of Projects ! Also, I am confused with mixed use of framework like Spring + JSF. What is the benefit to it ? Another thing making me confusing is about the UI components available in market. Like, we do have Primefaces, Ice-faces, MyFaces, Rich-faces. They may or may not have been supporting AJAX in-built. They may contains some bugs as well. What is best choice for Framework + UI component that can directly provide a best feet solution for any project ?

    Hello, I have 1 master and 2 slaves. I am using MySQL 5.1.42 on all servers. I am attempting to use mk-table-checksum to verify that their data is in sync, but I am getting unexpected results on one of the slaves. First, I generate the checksums on the master like this: mk-table-checksum h=localhost --databases MYDB --tables {$table_list} --replicate=MYDB.mk_checksum --chunk-size=10M My understanding is that this runs the checksum queries on the master which then propagate via normal replication to the slaves. So, no locking is needed because the slaves will be at the same logical point in time when they run the checksum queries on themselves. Is this correct? Next, to verify that the checksums match, I run this on the master: mk-table-checksum --databases MYDB --replicate=IRC.mk_checksum --replicate-check 1 h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx If there are any differences, I repair the slaves like this: mk-table-sync --execute --verbose --replicate IRC.mk_checksum h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx After doing all of this, I repaired both slaves with mk-table-sync. However, everytime I run this sequence (after everything has already been repaired), one slave is perfectly in sync but one slave always has a few tables out of sync. I am 99.999% sure that the data on the slaves matches, since I repaired everything and the tables were not even updated on the master between runs of the checksum script. What would cause a few tables to always show out of sync on only one of the slaves? I am stuck.   • Computer to Tv cable question

    Hi all. Heres my query : I have a PC with all the usual outputs and a couple of TVs in the house with inputs to connect to a computer. Now, what i would like to do is get rid of cable TV and using the input into the spliters in the basement,( ie. where the input cable from outside actually feeds the system ) have the computer become the "Cable supplier" ( so to speak ) and have the output ( via some sort of box ) from the computer, convert what is on my monitor into an RF signal that is then fed into the cables in my house and ultimately to each TV / room . I don't know if there is such an item but would welcome any thoughts you might have on such a set up. I am not into HD or the like, so the picture quality needs only to be watchable, not HD. I don't want to have to set up seperate cables to feed the audio on each TV. Thanks in advance!

    I have mirrored the ubuntu archive repository (I must say it's rather huge). Then, I can apt-get install with no problem, but it prompts with following warning: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! xxxx, xxxx, ... Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Well, you can always install it. But, I can't install from the ubuntu software GUI. Which require trusted source. So, 1. How to force the GUI to install untrusted package? 2. Should I configure GPG to receive some public keys? (I've already installed ubuntu-keyring, debian-keyring, but it still untrusted) 3. Should I configure GPG to receive unknown keys from some specific keyservers, automatically?

  • Exploratory Question for Security Admins (/etc/passwd + PHP)

    Hi everyone, I've been seeing a few issues lately on a few of my servers where an account gets hacked via outdated scripts, and the hacker uploads a cPanel / FTP Brute forcing PHP script inside the account. The PHP File reads /etc/passwd to get the usernames, and than uses a passwd.txt file to try and brute force it's way in to 127.0.0.1:2082. I'm trying to think of a way to block this. It doesn't POST anything except "GET /path/phpfile.php", so I can't use mod_security to block this. I've been thinking of maybe changing permissions on /etc/passwd to 600, however I'm unsure how this will result in regards to my users. I was also thinking of rate-limiting localhost connections to :2082, however I'm worried about mod_proxy being affected. Any suggestions?
