• Ruby: change each value in a hash with something like #collect for arrays?

  Hi! I'd like to replace each value in a hash with value.some_method. For example in a simple hash {"a" = "b", "c" = "d"} every value should be .upcase-d so it looks like {"a" = "B", "c" = "D"}. I tried #collect and #map but always just get arrays back. Is there an 'elegant' way to do this? Thanks in advance, Adam Nonymous UPDATE: Damn, I forgot: The hash is in an instance variable which should not be changed. I need a new hash with the changed values, but would prefer not to define that variable explicitly and then loop over the hash filling it. Something like new_hash = hash.magic {...} ;)

• Why Switch/Case and not If/Else If?

  This question in mainly pointed at C/C++, but I guess other languages are relevant as well. I can't understand why is switch/case still being used instead of if/else if. It seems to me much like using goto's, and results in the same sort of messy code, while the same results could be acheived with if/else if's in a much more organized manner. Still, I see these blocks around quite often. A common place to find them is near a message-loop (WndProc...), whereas these are among the places when they raise the heaviest havoc: variables are shared along the entire block, even when not propriate (and can't be initialized inside it). Extra attention has to be put on not dropping break's, and so on... Personally, I avoid using them, and I wonder wether I'm missing something? Are they more efficient than if/else's? Are they carried on by tradition?

  I'm trying to implement sieve of Eratosthenes in Clojure. One approach I would like to test is this: Get range (2 3 4 5 6 ... N) For 2 <= i <= N Pass my range through filter that removes multiplies of i For i+1th iteration, use result of the previous filtering I know I could do it with loop/recur, but this is causing stack overflow errors (for some reason tail call optimization is not applied). How can I do it iteratively? I mean invoking N calls to the same routine, passing result of ith iteration to i+1th.

  What's the right way to keep ssh host authenticity from being a problem for maven and hudsno builds? I have hudson building my maven project on a VM. When the ESX server with my VMs on it is taxed some of my jobs will stall out stuck in a loop of ssh host authenticity problems. The hosts were in the known hosts file, but during these times the clocks on the slave VMs have drifted far from those of my maven repo. • Setting a property value on each of the results in a FetchedResults set

  Hi On my Core Data Entity "Book" i have a boolean property, 'wasViewed' (NSNumber numberWithBool) that tells me if the Book was "viewed". I would like to implement a sort of "reset" this property for all my NSManagedObjects "Book". So that I can set them all to NO between sessions. I use an NSPredicate to retrieve all the Books like this: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"wasViewed == %@", [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES]]; // code for setting entity, request etc... NSMutableArray *mutableFetchResults = [[[managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:&error] mutableCopy] autorelease]; This is working just fine, however, now I need to set up a loop, go through each Book object, something like this: for(Book *b in mutableFetchResults) { [b setWasViewed:NO] } Is there a way to perform an action on each element that fits the predicate instead of retrieving it? So instead of executeFetchRequest on a managedObjectContext it could be executeOperationOnFetchRequestResults or something along those lines. Thanks for any input given:)

  I have data in the following format called DF (this is just a made up simplified sample): eval.num, eval.count, fitness, fitness.mean, green.h.0, green.v.0, offset.0 random 1 1 1500 1500 100 120 40 232342 2 2 1000 1250 100 120 40 11843 3 3 1250 1250 100 120 40 981340234 4 4 1000 1187.5 100 120 40 4363453 5 1 2000 2000 200 100 40 345902 6 1 3000 3000 150 90 10 943 7 1 2000 2000 90 90 100 9304358 8 2 1800 1900 90 90 100 284333 However, the eval.count column is incorrect and I need to fix it. It should report the number of rows with the same values for (green.h.0, green.v.0, and offset.0) by only looking at the previous rows. The example above uses the expected values, but assume they are incorrect. How can I add a new column (say "count") which will count all previous rows which have the same values of the specified variables? I have gotten help on a similar problem of just selecting all rows with the same values for specified columns, so I supposed I could just write a loop around that, but it seems inefficient to me.

• Basic Profanity Filter in Objective C for iPhone

  How have you like minded individuals tackled the basic challenge of filtering profanity, obviously one can't possibly tackle every scenario but it would be nice to have one at the most basic level as a first line of defense. In Obj-c I've got NSString *tokens = [text componentsSeparatedByString:@" "]; And then I loop through each token to see if any of the keywords (I've got about 400 in a list) are found within each token. Realising False positives are also a problem, if the word is a perfect match, its flagged as profanity otherwise if more than 3 words with profanity are found without being perfect matches it is also flagged as profanity. Later on I will use a webservice that tackles the problem more precisely, but I really just need something basic. So if you wrote the word penis it would go yup naughty naughty, bad word written.

Yeah, I know I post a lot of questions, but thats because I either need assurance that I am doing it right, what I am doing wrong, or if I am totally clueless, and cant find anything in the documentation. Anyways, I am trying to check for duplicate nodes. Here is how I would want to do it: Loop thru my nodes, and compare each single node's text (record), but if I got many nodes, wouldnt that be too time and memory consuming?   From the preface of the second edition of Kernighan and Ritchie's "The C Programming Language": As before, all examples have been tested directly from the text, which is in machine-readable form. That quote threw me for a loop. What exactly does it mean? Was the original manuscript written as a literate program? My first thought was that this book, published in 1988 (original, first edition in 1978) predates literate programming, but now I'm not so sure. Can anybody shed some light on this?

• Image surrounded by text in WPF

  Greetings, I have some control which display bunch of textblocks and image. I would like the image to be surrounded by text. I have already implemented some functionality by using FlowDocument and custom bindable run control. (These controls are included inside user control). When I generate lots of these controls in treeview, application goes into infinite loop. I asked on forums before about this problem and the answer was that it can be WPF issue. Howver when I removed bindable run from my user control, problem dissappeared. Now I am trying to implement other solution where image will be surrounded by text. Can someone please help me? • How to properly close a process with NppExec?

  I'm not sure what's going on here, but the following code continues running even after I end the process in the NppExec console with Ctrl-C (during the execution of the while loop). I restarted my computer to stop the Ctrl key sends.   Have a few questions related to adding sounds to my game, specifically intro music (for splash), background music (loop) and button event sounds. Hope you can share your knowledge on this. 1) Should I use compressed sounds or uncompressed sounds? Or perhaps a combination of the two? Are there any limitations on the iPhone hardware that I should be aware of -- for example, the ability to play multiple compressed sounds? 2) What's the best audio format for my purpose? 3) For background music, I am thinking of using AVAudioPlayer. The problem I am having is maintaining the current context item in the each loop of the selector.   In SQL, it is obvious that whenever we want to do a search on millions of record, say CustomerID in a Transactios table, then we want to add an index for CustomerID. Is another situation we want to add an index to a field when we need to do inner join or outer join using that field as a criteria? Such as Inner join on t1.custumerID = t2.customerID. Then if we don't have an index on customerID on both tables, we are looking at O(n^2) because we need to loop through the 2 tables sequentially. If we have index on customerID on both tables, then it becomes O( (log n) ^ 2 ) and it is much faster. Any other situation where we want to add an index to a field in a table? What about adding index for 2 fields combined in a table. That is, one index, for 2 fields together?

• Determing Python version at runtime

  The problem I'm having is that I've written code that depends on features in python2.6 so I'm trying to build a check that will produce a useful error if someone tries to run it on a machine with python lower than 2.6. The code I put in to check for the specific version and match it should work fine but the problem I have is the interpreter on a 2.4 machine reads the file and sees a "finally" at the end of my try loop and errors out before it gets far enough into execution for my if statement to handle the version mismatch. Other than changing the magic line to specifically look for /usr/bin/python2.6 is there a way python can handle this sort of thing?

• IE8 blocking JavaScript Cookies

  Hey there folks, Here is one that is throwing me for a loop. I am trying to set a simple cookie that has one name:value pair on IE8. Tested on FF and it works fine. IE8 keeps blocking it.   Hello, Simple lua game with simple class like so: creature = class({ name = "MONSTER BADDY!", stats = { power = 10, agility = 10, endurance = 10, filters = {} }, other_things = ... }) creatureA = creature.new() creatureB = creature.new() creatureA.name = "Frank" creatureB.name = "Zappa" creatureA.stats.agility = 20 creatureB.stats.power = 12 -- blah blah blah Non table values are individual to each instance, but table values are shared among all instances and if I modify a stats.X value in one instance, all other instances see the same stats table. Q1: Is my OO implementation flawed? I tried LOOP and the same result occured, is there a fundamental flaw in my logic? Q2: How would you have each instance of creature have it's own stats table (and sub tables)? PS. I cannot flatten my class table as it's a bit more complicated than the example and other parts of the code are simplified with this nested table implementation. Thanks a bunch.

  let say i have send email program which need to run arround 7 hours. but i cant open the browser for 7 hours beside cronjob, ignore_user_abort() will it be a solution? will the script stop when all email has sent and the program has finish the loop? or it will keep eating the server memory? some people said u may need to add some output at the end of the program to avoid the program run forever? and some people also said echo a litte bit string will not stop the script, but has to use ob_flush, any example for this?

• Will news ticker using overflow:hidden cause Google to see site as spam?

  In the hope of tempting Googlebot with fresh content, I've implemented a homepage news ticker which displays the 20 most recent headlines on our site. The implementation I have chosen is a <ul> with each headline being a <li> Initially all the <li> elements have no style but Javascript kicks in on page load and gives all but one of them a display="style:none" attribute. Javascript then displays each of the other 19 headlines in a loop. So far so good. However, in order to prevent a visually unplesant page load where the 20 items display and then immediately collapse, I am using overflow:hidden on the <ul> element. Anyone got a view on what Googlebot is likely to make of this? Does the fact that I'm using overflow:hidden make the content look like spam?
