• Logic in Entity Components Sytems

  I'm making a game that uses an Entity/Component architecture basically a port of Artemis's framework to c++,the problem arises when I try to make a PlayerControllerComponent, my original idea was this. class PlayerControllerComponent: Component { public: virtual void update() = 0; }; class FpsPlayerControllerComponent: PlayerControllerComponent { public: void update() { //handle input } }; and have a system that updates PlayerControllerComponents, but I found out that the artemis framework does not look at sub-classes the way I thought it would. So all in all my question here is should I make the framework aware of subclasses or should I add a new Component like object that is used for logic.

• Benefits of TOGAF or similar?

  I can read the website blurb and be impressed by the alleged benefits, but I haven't worked anywhere or with anyone who followed the TOGAF (or any alternative) architecture framework. Our organisation has declared itself dedicated to moving from what is currently a fairly shambolic design & development model towards something approaching a modern structured process. Things like TOGAF have been mentioned as helping achieve a world-class enterprise development environment (!) but I'm convinced that no-one here really understands the real-world benefits that wholesale adoption might bring and, perhaps more importantly, the effort/pain required to achieve the same. Do you have experience in using TOGAF or similar to wrestle control in an organisation? Do you think that use of the framework brought any benefit? Edit: For clarification TOGAF is "The Open Group Architecture Framework", a detailed method and set of tools for developing an enterprise architecture. • xdebug 2.2.1 installed but not working with cgi

  I've installed (via pecl) xdebug. It is installed (as phpinfo() output indicates), but it doesn't seems to work with CGI (with CLI it works). I've restarted apache, without result. Any ideas?   I want to develop an application which would have it's own framework, using which developer can implement functionality very easily. Developer shouldn't have to code for each and every page or report. But, he can do it very easily by just configuring it using the framework provided. Some nice examples of it is SAP and Tally. They have got their own framework, using which anybody having knowledge of it can customize or extend functionality of the product. But, as I am beginner in this direction, I don't have any idea about where to start. Can anybody point me to some design pattern which I can follow or some similar open source software which I can refer?

• Why is an inverse loop faster than a normal loop (test included)

  I have been running some small tests in PHP on loops. I do not know if my method is good. I have found that a inverse loop is faster than a normal loop. I have also found that a while-loop is faster than a for-loop. • How can the little guys effectively learn and use puppet?

  Six months ago, in our not-for-profit project we decided to start migrating our system management to a Puppet controlled environment because we are expecting our number of servers to grow substantially between now and a year from now. Since the decision has been made our IT guys have become a bit too annoyed a bit too often. Their biggest objections are: "We're not programmers, we're sysadmins"; Modules are available online but many differ from one another; wheels are being reinvented too often, how do you decide which one fits the bill; Code in our repo is not transparent enough, to find how something works they have to recurse through manifests and modules they might have even written themselves a while ago; One new daemon requires writing a new module, conventions have to be similar to other modules, a difficult process; "Let's just run it and see how it works" Tons of hardly known 'extensions' in community modules: 'trocla', 'augeas', 'hiera'... how can our sysadmins keep track? I can see why a large organisation would dispatch their sysadmins to puppet courses to become puppet masters. But how would smaller players get to learn puppet to a professional level if they do not go to courses and basically learn it via their browser and editor?

Use-Case: When I visit foo.com, I should see the webapp, which is hosted on jetty, port 8090. If I put foo.com/blog, I should see the wordpress blog, which is hosted on apache. (I read howtos on the web, and installed it using AMP.) Below are my various configuration files: /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/proxy.conf: ProxyPass / http://foo.com:8090/ << this is the jetty server ProxyPass /blog http://foo.com/blog ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyStatus On /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: LoadModule proxy_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy.so LoadModule proxy_balancer_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy_balancer.so LoadModule proxy_http_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy_http.so LoadModule proxy_ajp_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so I have not created any other files, in sites-available or sites-enabled. The proxy server could not handle the request GET /blog. Reason: Error reading from remote server I also cannot access /phpmyadmin, giving the same 404 NOT_FOUND error as above. I am running Debian squeeze on an Amazon EC2 Instance. Question: Where am I going wrong? What changes should I make in the proxy.conf (or another conf files) to be able to visit the blog?

• Debugging apache seg fault with gdb

  Apache on a production server of mine is seg faulting intermittently. I have enabled core dump option in apache configuration and have several dumped core files. Unfortunately, since it is a production server, apache or the loaded modules are not compiled with debug symbols. From what I understand, gdb cannot do much without debug symbols. Can I at least find out which module is causing the seg fault, without debug symbols? If so, how? • Removing HttpModule for specific path in ASP.NET / IIS 7 application?

  Most succinctly, my question is whether an ASP.NET 4.0 app running under IIS 7 integrated mode should be able to honor this portion of my Web.config file: <location path="auth/windows"> <system.webServer> <modules> <remove name="FormsAuthentication"/> </modules> </system.webServer> </location> I'm experimenting with mixed mode authentication (Windows and Forms). Using IIS Manager, I've disabled Anonymous authentication to auth/windows/winauth.aspx, which is within the location path above. I have Failed Request Tracing set up to trace various HTTP status codes, including 302s. When I request the winauth.aspx page, a 302 HTTP status code is returned. If I look at the request trace, I can see that a 401 (unauthorized) was originally generated by the AnonymousAuthenticationModule. However, the FormsAuthenticationModule converts that to a 302, which is what the browser sees. So it seems as though my attempt to remove that module from the pipeline for pages in that path isn't working. But I'm not seeing any complaints anywhere (event viewer, yellow pages of death, etc.) that would indicate it's an invalid configuration. I want the 401 returned to the browser, which presumably would include an appropriate WWW-Authenticate header. A few other points: a) I do have <authentication mode="Forms"> in my Web.config, and that is what the 302 redirects to; b) I got the "name" of the module I'm trying to remove from the inetserv\config\applicationHost.config file; c) I have this element in my Web.config file: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="false">; d) I tried a <location> element for the path in which I set the authentication mode to "None", but that gave a yellow exception page that the property can't be set below the application level. Anyone had any luck removing modules in this fashion?

• Cloned Centos 6.4 websrver for test purpose. Virtual host, .htaccess, redirecting url issue

  I see similar questions, but not my exact challenge. What I have done so far I cloned a prod server over to a vmware to use it as a test server for new functionality I'm going to write. I'm not a sysadmin by trade, but I'm new to this company and I have to do some thing that are outside of my comfort zone (thats a good thing :) ) The prod server has 2 sites on it s1.com and s2.com. In /html/s1/, /html/s2/ there's an .htaccess file under each s*/. Looking like this: RewriteEngine ON RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} id=([0-9]+) RewriteRule ^.* %1.htm RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} page=modules/checkout RewriteRule ^.* order.php RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} page=pages/sidekart RewriteRule ^.* pages/sidekart.htm The issue is that s1 has a lot of pages that really belongs under a third domain s3, the rule in line 4 and 5 redirects them to /html/s1/. An example of such URL is: s3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614 I'm trying then to get those URLs (without modifying the URL) to redirect to s3's /html/s3/ server structure, which I set up making a new virtualhost s3 in test servers httpd.conf with a test3.com as servername and changing the other sites to tests1.com and tests2.com, and adding .htaccess also to this s3 root directory, and making a html/s3/ directory structure I populated with an index.html, etc. But, when I take the same URL (s3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614) changing it to tests3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614, I get s1's index page showing up in my browser. I've poked around about a day now and i cant figure out why this happens.

• Mixing Forms and Token Authentication in a single ASP.NET Application (the Details)

  The scenario described in my last post works because of the design around HTTP modules in ASP.NET. Authentication related modules (like Forms authentication and WIF WS-Fed/Sessions) typically subscribe to three events in the pipeline – AuthenticateRequest/PostAuthenticateRequest for pre-processing and EndRequest for post-processing (like making redirects to a login page). In the pre-processing stage it is the modules’ job to determine the identity of the client based on incoming HTTP details (like a header, cookie, form post) and set HttpContext.User and Thread.CurrentPrincipal. The actual page (in the ExecuteHandler event) “sees” the identity that the last module has set. So in our case there are three modules in effect: FormsAuthenticationModule (AuthenticateRequest, EndRequest) WSFederationAuthenticationModule (AuthenticateRequest, PostAuthenticateRequest, EndRequest) SessionAuthenticationModule (AuthenticateRequest, PostAuthenticateRequest) So let’s have a look at the different scenario we have when mixing Forms auth and WS-Federation. Anoymous request to unprotected resource This is the easiest case. Since there is no WIF session cookie or a FormsAuth cookie, these modules do nothing. The WSFed module creates an anonymous ClaimsPrincipal and calls the registered ClaimsAuthenticationManager (if any) to transform it. The result (by default an anonymous ClaimsPrincipal) gets set. Anonymous request to FormsAuth protected resource This is the scenario where an anonymous user tries to access a FormsAuth protected resource for the first time. The principal is anonymous and before the page gets rendered, the Authorize attribute kicks in. The attribute determines that the user needs authentication and therefor sets a 401 status code and ends the request. Now execution jumps to the EndRequest event, where the FormsAuth module takes over. The module then converts the 401 to a redirect (302) to the forms login page. If authentication is successful, the login page sets the FormsAuth cookie.   FormsAuth authenticated request to a FormsAuth protected resource Now a FormsAuth cookie is present, which gets validated by the FormsAuth module. This cookie gets turned into a GenericPrincipal/FormsIdentity combination. The WS-Fed module turns the principal into a ClaimsPrincipal and calls the registered ClaimsAuthenticationManager. The outcome of that gets set on the context. Anonymous request to STS protected resource This time the anonymous user tries to access an STS protected resource (a controller decorated with the RequireTokenAuthentication attribute). The attribute determines that the user needs STS authentication by checking the authentication type on the current principal. If this is not Federation, the redirect to the STS will be made. After successful authentication at the STS, the STS posts the token back to the application (using WS-Federation syntax). Postback from STS authentication After the postback, the WS-Fed module finds the token response and validates the contained token. If successful, the token gets transformed by the ClaimsAuthenticationManager, and the outcome is a) stored in a session cookie, and b) set on the context. STS authenticated request to an STS protected resource This time the WIF Session authentication module kicks in because it can find the previously issued session cookie. The module re-hydrates the ClaimsPrincipal from the cookie and sets it.     FormsAuth and STS authenticated request to a protected resource This is kind of an odd case – e.g. the user first authenticated using Forms and after that using the STS. This time the FormsAuth module does its work, and then afterwards the session module stomps over the context with the session principal. In other words, the STS identity wins.   What about roles? A common way to set roles in ASP.NET is to use the role manager feature. There is a corresponding HTTP module for that (RoleManagerModule) that handles PostAuthenticateRequest. Does this collide with the above combinations? No it doesn’t! When the WS-Fed module turns existing principals into a ClaimsPrincipal (like it did with the FormsIdentity), it also checks for RolePrincipal (which is the principal type created by role manager), and turns the roles in role claims. Nice! But as you can see in the last scenario above, this might result in unnecessary work, so I would rather recommend consolidating all role work (and other claims transformations) into the ClaimsAuthenticationManager. In there you can check for the authentication type of the incoming principal and act accordingly. HTH

• Multiple Audio Issues

  I am having issues with my audio on Ubuntu 12.04, I will try and give as much detail as possible so sorry if there's too much detail. The Problem Audio plays from both speakers and headphone regardless of what connector I choose and regardless of the profile I use. The microphone is constantly being played through headphones & speakers. The headphone audio is extremely quiet but plays from both ears when I select "Headphones" for the connector in Sound Settings. The headphone audio only plays from one ear and is quiet (but not as quiet as above) when I select "Analogue Output" for the connector in Sound Settings. I can only select "Headphones" as the connector in Sound Settings if I set the profile to either "Analogue Stereo Output/Duplex", all others only allow me to choose "Analogue Output" for the connector. Despite the headphone sound issues, the speaker sound is fine apart from the fact that I am not able to select which output is used, they just both play. My headphone and microphone are plugged into the front and my speakers are plugged into the back. What I have tried I have put everything in alsamixer to 100 apart from "Front Mic Boost" which I have set to 0.
