  • Developing Schema Compare for Oracle (Part 6): 9i Query Performance

    - by Simon Cooper
All throughout the EAP and beta versions of Schema Compare for Oracle, our main request was support for Oracle 9i. After releasing version 1.0 with support for 10g and 11g, our next step was then to get version 1.1 of SCfO out with support for 9i. However, there were some significant problems that we had to overcome first. This post will concentrate on query execution time. When we first tested SCfO on a 9i server, after accounting for various changes to the data dictionary, we found that database registration was taking a long time. And I mean a looooooong time. The same database that on 10g or 11g would take a couple of minutes to register would be taking upwards of 30 mins on 9i. Obviously, this is not ideal, so a poke around the query execution plans was required. As an example, let's take the table population query - the one that reads ALL_TABLES and joins it with a few other dictionary views to get us back our list of tables. On 10g, this query takes 5.6 seconds. On 9i, it takes 89.47 seconds. The difference in execution plan is even more dramatic - here's the (edited) execution plan on 10g: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Id | Operation | Name | Bytes | Cost |-------------------------------------------------------------------------------| 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 108K| 939 || 1 | SORT ORDER BY | | 108K| 939 || 2 | NESTED LOOPS OUTER | | 108K| 938 ||* 3 | HASH JOIN RIGHT OUTER | | 103K| 762 || 4 | VIEW | ALL_EXTERNAL_LOCATIONS | 2058 | 3 ||* 20 | HASH JOIN RIGHT OUTER | | 73472 | 759 || 21 | VIEW | ALL_EXTERNAL_TABLES | 2097 | 3 ||* 34 | HASH JOIN RIGHT OUTER | | 39920 | 755 || 35 | VIEW | ALL_MVIEWS | 51 | 7 || 58 | NESTED LOOPS OUTER | | 39104 | 748 || 59 | VIEW | ALL_TABLES | 6704 | 668 || 89 | VIEW PUSHED PREDICATE | ALL_TAB_COMMENTS | 2025 | 5 || 106 | VIEW | ALL_PART_TABLES | 277 | 11 |------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And the same query on 9i: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Id | Operation | Name | Bytes | Cost |-------------------------------------------------------------------------------| 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 16P| 55G|| 1 | SORT ORDER BY | | 16P| 55G|| 2 | NESTED LOOPS OUTER | | 16P| 862M|| 3 | NESTED LOOPS OUTER | | 5251G| 992K|| 4 | NESTED LOOPS OUTER | | 4243M| 2578 || 5 | NESTED LOOPS OUTER | | 2669K| 1440 ||* 6 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 398K| 302 || 7 | VIEW | ALL_TABLES | 342K| 276 || 29 | VIEW | ALL_MVIEWS | 51 | 20 ||* 50 | VIEW PUSHED PREDICATE | ALL_TAB_COMMENTS | 2043 | ||* 66 | VIEW PUSHED PREDICATE | ALL_EXTERNAL_TABLES | 1777K| ||* 80 | VIEW PUSHED PREDICATE | ALL_EXTERNAL_LOCATIONS | 1744K| ||* 96 | VIEW | ALL_PART_TABLES | 852K| |------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have a look at the cost column. 10g's overall query cost is 939, and 9i is 55,000,000,000 (or more precisely, 55,496,472,769). It's also having to process far more data. What on earth could be causing this huge difference in query cost? After trawling through the '10g New Features' documentation, we found item 1.9.2.21. Before 10g, Oracle advised that you do not collect statistics on data dictionary objects. From 10g, it advised that you do collect statistics on the data dictionary; for our queries, Oracle therefore knows what sort of data is in the dictionary tables, and so can generate an efficient execution plan. On 9i, no statistics are present on the system tables, so Oracle has to use the Rule Based Optimizer, which turns most LEFT JOINs into nested loops. If we force 9i to use hash joins, like 10g, we get a much better plan: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Id | Operation | Name | Bytes | Cost |-------------------------------------------------------------------------------| 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 7587K| 3704 || 1 | SORT ORDER BY | | 7587K| 3704 ||* 2 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 7587K| 822 ||* 3 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 5262K| 616 ||* 4 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 2980K| 465 ||* 5 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 710K| 432 ||* 6 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 398K| 302 || 7 | VIEW | ALL_TABLES | 342K| 276 || 29 | VIEW | ALL_MVIEWS | 51 | 20 || 50 | VIEW | ALL_PART_TABLES | 852K| 104 || 78 | VIEW | ALL_TAB_COMMENTS | 2043 | 14 || 93 | VIEW | ALL_EXTERNAL_LOCATIONS | 1744K| 31 || 106 | VIEW | ALL_EXTERNAL_TABLES | 1777K| 28 |------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's much more like it. This drops the execution time down to 24 seconds. Not as good as 10g, but still an improvement. There are still several problems with this, however. 10g introduced a new join method - a right outer hash join (used in the first execution plan). The 9i query optimizer doesn't have this option available, so forcing a hash join means it has to hash the ALL_TABLES table, and furthermore re-hash it for every hash join in the execution plan; this could be thousands and thousands of rows. And although forcing hash joins somewhat alleviates this problem on our test systems, there's no guarantee that this will improve the execution time on customers' systems; it may even increase the time it takes (say, if all their tables are partitioned, or they've got a lot of materialized views). Ideally, we would want a solution that provides a speedup whatever the input. To try and get some ideas, we asked some oracle performance specialists to see if they had any ideas or tips. Their recommendation was to add a hidden hook into the product that allowed users to specify their own query hints, or even rewrite the queries entirely. However, we would prefer not to take that approach; as well as a lot of new infrastructure & a rewrite of the population code, it would have meant that any users of 9i would have to spend some time optimizing it to get it working on their system before they could use the product. Another approach was needed. All our population queries have a very specific pattern - a base table provides most of the information we need (ALL_TABLES for tables, or ALL_TAB_COLS for columns) and we do a left join to extra subsidiary tables that fill in gaps (for instance, ALL_PART_TABLES for partition information). All the left joins use the same set of columns to join on (typically the object owner & name), so we could re-use the hash information for each join, rather than re-hashing the same columns for every join. To allow us to do this, along with various other performance improvements that could be done for the specific query pattern we were using, we read all the tables individually and do a hash join on the client. Fortunately, this 'pure' algorithmic problem is the kind that can be very well optimized for expected real-world situations; as well as storing row data we're not using in the hash key on disk, we use very specific memory-efficient data structures to store all the information we need. This allows us to achieve a database population time that is as fast as on 10g, and even (in some situations) slightly faster, and a memory overhead of roughly 150 bytes per row of data in the result set (for schemas with 10,000 tables in that means an extra 1.4MB memory being used during population). Next: fun with the 9i dictionary views.

  • DB2: Won't allow parameterize fetch first X rows only

    - by Guy Roth
Although in Oracle DB its is allowed to parametrize the number of rows that the query can fetch by adding to the query: select ... from ... where ... and rownum <= @MaximumRecords I can't add similar condition to acuivalent query running in DB2: It is allowed to add: select ... from ... where ... fetch first 500 rows only (where there is fixed number of rows) but not: select ... from ... where ... fetch first :1 rows only (:1 == @MaximumRecords) Is someone aware of a solution/work-around to this problem?

  • can oracle types be updated like tables?

    - by Omnipresent
I am converting GTT's to oracle types as explained in an excellent answer by APC. however, some GTT's are being updated based on a select query from another table. For example: UPDATE my_gtt_1 c SET (street, city, STATE, zip) = (SELECT src.unit_address, src.unit_city, src.unit_state, src.unit_zip_code FROM (SELECT mbr.ROWID row_id, unit_address, RTRIM(a.unit_city) unit_city, RTRIM(a.unit_state) unit_state, RTRIM(a.unit_zip_code) unit_zip_code FROM table_1 b, table_2 a, my_gtt_1 mbr WHERE type = 'ABC' AND id = b.ssn_head AND a.h_id = b.h_id AND row_id >= v_start_row AND row_id <= v_end_row) src WHERE c.ROWID = src.row_id) WHERE state IS NULL OR state = ' '; if my_gtt_1 was not a global temporary table but an oracle collection type then is it possible to do updates this complex? Or in these cases we are better off using the global temporary table?

  • how to combine these queries

    - by mmcgrail
and get meaningful results. Currently I am running these three queries: SELECT t.type,t.id,s.title FROM db1.tags t INNER JOIN db1.st s ON s.id=t.id WHERE id LIKE '%%' AND t.tag='foo' AND t.type='s' ORDER BY tag desc LIMIT 0, 19 SELECT t.type,t.id,v.title FROM db1.tags t INNER JOIN db1.vi v ON v.id=t.id WHERE id LIKE '%%' AND t.tag='foo' AND t.type='v' ORDER BY tag desc LIMIT 0, 19 SELECT t.type,t.id,i.ca AS title FROM db1.tags t INNER JOIN db2.tablename i ON i.id=t.id WHERE id LIKE '%%' AND t.tag='foo' AND t.type='i' ORDER BY tag desc LIMIT 0, 19 then trying to combine the data results but what I would really prefer is if I could combine them into a single query. Any thoughts?

  • Is there a way to rewrite the SQL query efficiently

    - by user320587
hi, I have two tables with following definition TableA TableB ID1 ID2 ID3 Value1 Value ID1 Value1 C1 P1 S1 S1 C1 P1 S2 S2 C1 P1 S3 S3 C1 P1 S5 S4 S5 The values are just examples in the table. TableA has a clustered primary key ID1, ID2 & ID3 and TableB has p.k. ID1 I need to create a table that has the missing records in TableA based on TableB The select query I am trying to create should give the following output C1 P1 S4 To do this, I have the following SQL query SELECT DISTINCT TableA.ID1, TableA.ID2, TableB.ID1 FROM TableA a, TableB b WHERE TableB.ID1 NOT IN ( SELECT DISTINCT [ID3] FROM TableA aa WHERE a.ID1 == aa.ID1 AND a.ID2 == aa.ID2 ) Though this query works, it performs poorly and my final TableA may have upto 1M records. is there a way to rewrite this more efficiently. Thanks for any help, Javid

  • the creation date of a database

This is a question that originated from this question by Jamie. I thought I'll check Dougman's answer. What's happening here? A restore? select created from dba_users where username = 'SYS'; select min(created) FROM dba_objects; select created from v$database; CREATED ------------------------- 10-SEP-08 11:24:44 MIN(CREATED) ------------------------- 10-SEP-08 11:24:28 CREATED ------------------------- 18-DEC-09 15:49:00 Created from v$database is more than one year later than creation date of user SYS and SYS' objects.

  • m2eclipse/svn project with packaging of pom

    - by wuntee
I have a project with the following layout taac * taac-web * taac-backend-api * taac-scheduler all of this is checked into an SVN repository. When creating a new project in eclipse (originally) I checked out the root taac directory, and it gave me the option to select each of the sub-projects to create new eclipse projects for. I had a problem with svn and had to remove the projects from eclipse, and now when trying to check them out, i no longer get this option. If I select just the sub-projects, then their pom's are invalid (due to not having the parent pom).... Does anyone know how to get that option to select each separate project out?

  • pipelined function

    - by user289429
Can someone provide an example of how to use parallel table function in oracle pl/sql. We need to run massive queries for 15 years and combine the result. SELECT * FROM Table(TableFunction(cursor(SELECT * FROM year_table))) ...is what we want effectively. The innermost select will give all the years, and the table function will take each year and run massive query and returns a collection. The problem we have is that all years are being fed to one table function itself, we would rather prefer the table function being called in parallel for each of the year. We tried all sort of partitioning by hash and range and it didn't help. Also, can we drop the keyword PIPELINED from the function declaration? because we are not performing any transformation and just need the aggregate of the resultset.

  • Removing duplicate SQL records to permit a unique key

    - by j pimmel
I have a table ('sales') in a MYSQL DB which should have rightfully have had a unique constraint enforced to prevent duplicates. To first remove the dupes and set the constraint is proving a bit tricky. Table structure (simplified): 'id (unique, autoinc)' product_id The goal is to enforce uniqueness for product_id. The de-duping policy I want to apply is to remove all duplicate records except the most recently created, eg: the highest id Or to put another way, I would like to delete duplicate records, excluding the ids matched by the following query: select id from sales s inner join (select product_id, max(id) as maxId from sales group by product_id having count(product_id) > 1) groupedByProdId on s.product_id and s.id = groupedByProdId.maxId I've struggled with this on two fronts - writing the query to select the correct records to delete and then also the constraint in MYSQL where a subselect FROM clause of a DELETE cannot reference the same table from which data is being removed.

  • Create view or SP, only if the DB contains a pattern

    - by Randall Salas
Hi all: I am working on a script, that needs to be run in many different SQL servers. Some of them, shared the same structure, in other words, they are identical, but the filegroups and the DB names are different. This is because is one per client. Anyway, I would like when running a script, If I chose the wrong DB, it should not be executed. I am trying to mantain a clean DB. here is my example, which only works for dropping a view if exists, but does not work for creating a new one. I also wonder how it would be for creating a stored procedure. Thx a lot. if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[ContentModDate]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsView') = 1) AND CHARINDEX('Content', DB_NAME()) 0 drop view [dbo].[ContentModDate] GO IF (CHARINDEX('Content', DB_NAME()) 0)BEGIN CREATE VIEW [dbo].[Rx_ContentModDate] AS SELECT 'Table1' AS TableName, MAX(ModDate) AS ModDate FROM Tabl1 WHERE ModDate IS NOT NULL UNION SELECT 'Table2', MAX(ModDate) AS ModDate FROM Table2 WHERE ModDate IS NOT NULL END END GO

  • Why is this postgres function failing only on one specifc database?

    - by Ollie Edwards
I'm trying to fix an issue with a legacy database. The quote_literal function is not working for a specific database on an 8.4 install of postgres. Here's my results on a fresh test database: select quote_literal(42); quote_literal --------------- '42' (1 row) And now the same on the target db select quote_literal(42); ERROR: function quote_literal(integer) is not unique LINE 1: select quote_literal(42); ^ HINT: Could not choose a best candidate function. You might need to add explicit type casts. AIUI, the quote_literal(anyvalue) function should handle integer values ok, and this seems to be upheld by the first test. So I figured the quote_literal function must have been overridden in this db but no this doesn't seem to be the case. I could override it with a specific quote_literal(integer) function but I don't see why I should have to. The question is what is could be causing the failure of this function in this specific database whilst not affecting the fresh db?

  • Using a temp table in a view

Hi Everyone I would really like to create a view. I know you can't use temp tables in MSSQL2005 views. Without rewriting the sql, is there anything obvious I've missed? • ASP.NET MVC, JSON & non JavaScript clients

    - by redsquare
I need to ensure that an application I am developing is accessable and also works with JavaScript turned off. I just need a pointer to assist with the following. I had 3 'chained' select boxes and I wanted JavaScript enabled clients to have a nice Ajax experience. I can easily write the required functionality to populate the chained boxes on the change event of the preceeding select using jQuery and JSON with a WCF service. However what about the non JavaScript client? Would I wrap a submit next to the select and place these inside their own form to post back with a certain action or different querstring parameter? Can the same controller give me a partial JSON response as well as feeding the full HTML response. Can anyone point me to a good demo that utilises both JSON and normal HTTP posts to produce the same result in ASP.NET MVC. All ASP.NET MVC demo/examples I see forget about the non JavaScript enabled client.

    (MYSQL n00b) I have 3 tables: id = int(10), photo_id = bigint(20) PHOTO records limited to 3 million PHOTO: +-------+-----------------+ | id | photo_num | +-------+-----------------+ | 1 | 123456789123 | | 2 | 987654321987 | | 3 | 5432167894321 | +-------+-----------------+ COLOR: +-------+-----------------+---------+ | id | photo_num | color | +-------+-----------------+---------+ | 1 | 123456789123 | red | | 2 | 987654321987 | blue | | 3 | 5432167894321 | green | +-------+-----------------+---------+ SIZE: +-------+-----------------+---------+ | id | photo_num | size | +-------+-----------------+---------+ | 1 | 123456789123 | large | | 2 | 987654321987 | small | | 3 | 5432167894321 | medium | +-------+-----------------+---------+ Both COLOR and SIZE tables will have several million records. Q1: Is it better to change photo_num on COLOR and SIZE to int(10) and point it to PHOTO's id? Right now I use these: (PHOTO is no where in the picture) SELECT * from COLOR WHERE photo_num='xxx'; SELECT * from SIZE WHERE photo_num='xxx'; Q2: How will the SELECT query look if PHOTO id was used in COLOR, SIZE?

  • How to insert multiple check-box values inside database when one or more will be left unchecked?

    - by Sally
I have a form that contains 5 check boxes. The user may select one or more of these check boxes. The user may select 2 and leave 3 unchecked or select 4 and leave one unchecked and so on, in that case how can I write the php/mysql code that will insert the form data into the database. With just one selection it's easy, I would do: $checkbox_value = $_POST['i_agree']; mysql_query("INSERT INTO terms (user, pass, conditions) VALUES ('$user','$pass','$checkbox_value')"); But how can I write this when there are multiple check box options and only one or more of them will be checked? I want to insert them all in one column called "tags" separated by commas.

  • Extract multiple values from one column in MySql

    - by Neil
I've noticed that MySql has an extensive search capacity, allowing both wildcards and regular expressions. However, I'm in somewhat in a bind since I'm trying to extract multiple values from a single string in my select query. For example, if I had the text "<span>Test</span> this <span>query</span>", perhaps using regular expressions I could find and extract values "Test" or "query", but in my case, I have potentially n such strings to extract. And since I can't define n columns in my select statement, that means I'm stuck. Is there anyway I could have a list of values (ideally separated by commas) of any text contained with span tags? In other words, if I ran this query, I would get "Test, query" as the value of spanlist: select <insert logic here> as spanlist from HtmlPages ...

  • Adding Days To Date in SQL

    - by Coding Noob
I am trying to get data from my Database of those who have upcoming birth days in next few days(declared earlier) it's working fine for days but this query will not work if i add 24 days to current date cause than it will need change in month. i wonder how can i do it declare @date int=10, @month int=0 select * from STUDENT_INFO where DATEPART(DD,STDNT_DOB) between DATEPART(DD,GETDATE()) and DATEPART(DD,DATEADD(DD,@date,GETDATE())) and DATEPART(MM,STDNT_DOB) = DATEPART(MM,DATEADD(MM,@month,GETDATE())) This query works fine but it only checks date between 8 & 18 but if i use it like this declare @date int=30, @month int=0 select * from STUDENT_INFO where DATEPART(DD,STDNT_DOB) between DATEPART(DD,GETDATE()) and DATEPART(DD,DATEADD(DD,@date,GETDATE())) and DATEPART(MM,STDNT_DOB) = DATEPART(MM,DATEADD(MM,@month,GETDATE())) it will return nothing since it require addition in month as well If I Use it like this declare @date int=40, @month int=0 select * from STUDENT_INFO where DATEPART(DD,STDNT_DOB) between DATEPART(DD,GETDATE()) and DATEADD(DD,@date,GETDATE()) and DATEPART(MM,STDNT_DOB) = DATEPART(MM,DATEADD(MM,@month,GETDATE())) than it will return results till the last of this month but will not show till 18/12 which was required
