  • Make SQL Server 2005 accessible via Internet

    I have an application that runs on a client's server built on a SQL Server 2005 database. We have now developed an ASP.NET v2 application which connects to this database. This web application will be hosted on an ISP's server but needs to access the SQL Server database on the client's server. The client's server has a firewall and so forth so I assume it should be possible to make the SQL Server accessible via the Internet but of course I am woriied about security. Can someone point me to some best practices to achieve this.

  • Possible disk IO issue

    I've been trying to really figure out what my IOPS are on my DB server array and see if it's just too much. The array is four 72.6gb 15k rpm drives in RAID 5. To calculate IOPS for RAID 5 the following formula is used: (reads + (4 * Writes)) / Number of disks = total IOPS. The formula is from MSDN. I also want to calculate the Avg Queue Length but I'm not sure where they are getting the formula from, but i think it reads on that page as avg que length/number of disks = actual queue. To populate that formula I used the perfmon to gather the needed information. I came up with this, under normal production load: (873.982 + (4 * 28.999)) / 4 = 247.495. Also the disk queue lengh of 14.454/4 = 3.614. So to the question, am I wrong in thinking this array has a very high disk IO? Edit I got the chance to review it again this morning under normal/high load. This time with even bigger numbers and IOPS in excess of 600 for about 5 minutes then it died down again. But I also took a look at the Avg sec/Transfer, %Disk Time, and %Idle Time. These number were taken when the reads/writes per sec were only 332.997/17.999 respectively. %Disk Time: 219.436 %Idle Time: 0.300 Avg Disk Queue Length: 2.194 Avg Disk sec/Transfer: 0.006 Pages/sec: 2927.802 % Processor Time: 21.877 Edit (again) Looks like I have that issue solved. Thanks for the help. Also for a pretty slick parser I found this: http://pal.codeplex.com/ It works pretty well for breaking down the data into something usable.

    Say you set up a Windows Server Failover Cluster consisting of two nodes, on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Now when you want to configure quorum you can use either a remote shared folder, or a shared disk (unless your nodes are separated geographically). I'd love to know more about when to use a disk witness and when to use a file share witness. What are the differences? Does it matter at all?

I am currently getting a report back with all the email, flaws, memory usage but nothing on web usage.     Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.     I have a batch script that does reporting on our systems and part of it queries the registry for information. The script fails to get the key's value when its ran by the system, but whenever I run the script myself, it works perfectly the command: REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion" /v PatternStringFormatted > current1.tmp should return: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion PatternStringFormatted REG_SZ 6.645.00 This script is failing on a Server 2008 R2 machine, but runs fine on Server 2003 R2 machines.

    One of our customers has the following configuration: On the domain controller, there's an SQL Server. On his PC (WinXP), he logs on with LocalPC\LocalUser. In Windows Explorer, he opens DomainController\SomeShare and authenticates as Domain\Administrator. He starts our application, which opens a trusted connection (Windows authentication) to the SQL Server. It works. In SSMS, the connection shows up with the user Domain\Administrator. Firstly, I was surprised that this even works. (My first suspicion was that there is a user with the same name and password in the domain, but there is no user LocalUser in the domain.) Then we tried to reproduce the same behaviour on his new PC, but failed: On his new PC (Win7), he logs on with OtherLocalPC\OtherLocalUser. In Windows Explorer, he opens DomainController\SomeShare and authenticates as Domain\Administrator. He starts our application, which opens a trusted connection (Windows authentication) to the SQL Server. It fails with the error message Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. Hence my question: Under which conditions can a non-domain user access a remote SQL Server using Windows Authentication with different credentials? Apparently, it's possible (it works on his old PC), but why? And how can I reproduce it?

  • Is Sql Server 2008 R2 unsupported by Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2?

    Hey all, I'm performing a test configuration of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, on a system prepared with Sql Server 2008 R2. Unfortunately, the Scom 2007 R2 prerequisites verification program seems to be detecting exact versions of Sql Server, and not simply a minimum version, like it claims: "System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 requires SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise Edition with SP1 and above or SQL Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise edition with SP1 and above. Note: Operations Manager 2007 R2 does not support a 32-bit Operations Manager Operations database, Reporting Server data warehouse or Audit Collection database on a 64-bit operating system." I had hoped that this was just a helper tool that was assisting in getting me off the ground, but unfortunately it seems as if it's actually used as a gate for the installation to proceed. Has anyone encountered this? If so, is there a way to fool the installer into thinking that it has a proper version, or otherwise alert it to my valid configuration?

  • Could my 64-bit server be somehow identifying itself as a 32-bit server?

    Has anyone ever heard of a 64-bit OS identifying itself as a 32-bit OS? We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 development server. We've been trying to activate it with a product key from MSDN, but it keeps telling us the the key is invalid. I've opened a ticket with MSDN for this. Then something odd happened -- I tried to install a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005. After it extracted, we got this message: This version of hotfix.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program... Now, we're pretty sure this is a 64-bit OS. Computer Properties says: System Type: 64-bit Operating System Also, we have both a "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x64)" directory. I don't know how the product key activator or the SQL install program attempts to divine the type of OS, but could it be...wrong?

  • WSS Search fills 10 GB limit on SBS server 2011

    I've got a SBS Server 2011 Standard SP1 that isn't very busy. 2 Users local and 2 remote. We have sharepoint that has maybe a dozen small documents at most. I've just started getting the following two error occur Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.MSSBatchHistory'.'IX_MSSBatchHistory' in database 'WSS_Search_SERVER' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. And CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database. Digging around in SQL manager I see that WSS Search DB file size is 10241MB, the log file is only 147 MB Firstly, why is WSS Search taking up so much space? How can I stop it from doing so, and what can I do now to get things running ok. I know about log file truncating and this isn't the case here since the log is tiny. Any help is appreciated.     My jabber-server fails to connect to gmail.com giving the error: outgoing s2s stream myserver.com.ua-bot.talk.google.com closed: undefined-condition (myserver.com.ua is a Google Apps Domain with Talk service enabled.) I am using the Prosody XMPP server. It works just fine with other jabber-servers I tested so far (e.g. jabber.ru).   • Chrooted pygopherd fails to find new directories and files

    I tried to setup a Pygopherd on my server. The default setup works fine, but when I try to change the gophermap to point to a new directory with a new file, I get an error message in my gopher client: --- [1] '/path/to/gopher/newdir' does not exist (no handler found) First I thought this is caused by the chroot in which pygopherd runs as default. But when I disable the chroot, the same error comes up. Did anyone successfully set up pygopherd or knows about a better gopher server?

  • A dusty server room

    Here's the story.. The owners of the building we lease office space from decided to do a renovation of the exterior. This involved in some pretty heavy work at the level where our server room is, including exchanging windows wich are fit inside a concrete wall. My red alert went off when I heard that they were going to do the same thing with our server room (yes, our server room has a window. We're a small shop with 3 racks. The window is secured with steel bars.) I explicity told the contractor that they need to put up a temporarily wall between our racks and the original wall - and to make sure that the temporary wall is 100 % air and water-tight. They promised to do so. The temporary wall has a small door in it, so that workers can go in/out through the day (through our server room, wich was the only option....). On several occasions I could find the small door half-way shut while working evenings/nights. I locked the door, and thought that they would hopefully get the point soon and keep the door shut. I even gave a electrician a mouthful when I saw that he didn't close the door properly. By this point - I bet that most of you get a picture of what happened. Yes, they probably left the door open while drilling in the concrete. I present you our 4 weeks old EMC VNX: I'll even put in a little bonus, here is the APC UPS one rack further away from the temporary wall. See the nice little landing strip from my finger? What should I do? The only thing that comes to mind is to either call all our suppliers (EMC, HP, Dell, Cisco) and get them to send technicians to check out all the gear in the server room, or get some kind of certified 3rd-party consulant to check all of it. Would you run production systems on this gear? How long? Edit: I should also note that our aircondition isn't exactly enterprise-grade, given the nature of our small room. It's just a single inverter, wich have failed one time before I started working here (failed inverters usually leads to water dripping out).

  • Can't get virtual desktops to show up on RDWeb for Server 2012 R2

    I built a test lab using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. The initial test lab has the following configuration (I have replaced our name with "OurCompanyName" because I would like it if Google searches for our name did not cause people to come to this site, please do the same in any responses) Physical hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview full GUI, acting as Hyper-V host (joined to the test domain as testVwHost.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) with the following VM's running on it VM running 2012 R2 Core acting as domain controller for the forest testVw.OurCompanyName.com (testDC.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) VM running 2012 R2 Core with nothing running on it joined to the test domain as testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com A clean install of Windows 7, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it A clean install of Windows 8, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it I then ran "Add Roles and Features" from testVwHost and chose the "Remote Desktop Services Installation", "Standard Deployment", "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment". I choose testIIS for the roles "RD Connection Broker" and "RD Web Access" and testVwHost as "RD Virtualization Host" The Install of the roles went fine, I then went to Remote Desktop Services in server manager and wet to setup Deployment Properties. I set the certificate for all 3 roles to our certificate signed by a CA for *.OurCompanyName.com. I then created a new Virtual Desktop Collection for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and both where created without issue. On the Windows 7 pool I added RemoteApp to launch WordPad, For windows 8 I did not add any RemoteApp programs. Everything now appears to be fine from a setup perspective however if I go to https://testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com/RDWeb and log in as the use Administrator (or any orher user) I don't see the virtual desktops I created nor the RemoteApp publishing of WordPad. I tried adding a licensing server, using testDC as the server but that made no difference. What step did I miss in setting this up that is causing this not to show up on RDWeb? If any additional information is needed pleas let me know. I have tried every possible thing I can think of and I am just groping around in the dark now.   • Unable to telnet out on port 25 on windows server 2008

    Hi All, I just setup a Windows 2008 R2 server and am trying to get a basic mail server up and running so that I can send emails from my applications. I setup a virtual SMTP server in IIS6 and tried doing a local telnet to port 25, which seemed to work fine. There were no errors during this stage and I can see the mail message appear in the Queue folder. The problem is that mail never leaves the Queue folder. I then tried to telnet to a remote mail server on port 25 but couldn't connect:- telnet 209.85.227.27 25 Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connection failed) I checked my firewall and there is a default setting to allow all outgoing TCP traffic with no restriction. I even setup a specific rule for outgoing port 25 traffic but to no avail. I then ran a SmtpDiag.exe command .\SmtpDiag.exe [email protected] [email protected] and received the following output Searching for Exchange external DNS settings. Computer name is WIN-SERVERNAME. Failed to connect to the domain controller. Error: 8007054b Checking SOA for gmail.com. Checking external DNS servers. Checking internal DNS servers. SOA serial number match: Passed. Checking local domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: gmail.com. Checking MX records using UDP: gmail.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Local DNS test passed. Checking remote domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: gmail.com. Checking MX records using UDP: gmail.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Remote DNS test passed.     Can anyone tell me why we have multiple instances of the same computer (SALLY) under network in the open file dialog. Please see the image below. This is not an issue in itself, however I am wondering if it is related to some file corruption issues we have been having lately. All pc's are windows 7. Server is Windows Server 2008 R2. We are using folder redirection, roaming profiles and offline files.
