• Send arbitrary commands to modem for info

  I have a USB 3G data card and modem. According to the supplier, to check the data balance on the account, I must dial a number like *89# (or whatever) from the handset. The device appears as a ppp0 interface in my network devices. How does one go about issuing commands to the modem to send the commands and receive back the information? UPDATE: OK, I found some help here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/sending-at-commands-to-a-sms-modem-372445/, but firstly, there are 3 ttyUSB devices on my system, and I assume that one of them is the 3G modem, but how can I tell? Secondly, trying to echo something to two of them says that the device is busy, which stands to reason, because I am using it to connect to the internet. Some help, please?

• Kernel Panic: line 61: can't open /scripts/functions

  I'm facing a problem with all the kernels installed at my system (Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit). Installed kernel versions: 2.6.32-21 up to 2.6.35.23. The booting halted with the following error: init: .: line 61: can't open '/scripts/functions' Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Pid: 1, comm: init not tainted Only the first one (2.6.32-21) was working up until know. I asked for help at ubuntuforums.org and i was told to check if there's any problem regarding my graphics card (ATI Radeon). I uninstalled all the ATI-related packages as well as all the unecessary xserver-xorg-video-* drivers that were installed. I then rebooted and from then on ALL of the kernels halt with the same error (i.e. it didn't fix the problematic kernels, it just broke the only one that was working...) Any ideas on what i should try next? Thanks in advance. Pavlos.

  I know there are site tools to check if your webpage is alive, has compression, etc but lets not get into that. What are useful sites to paste code in and to share links of? The three i know are http://codepad.org/ shows source and runs code online http://www.pastie.org/ share source with syntax highlighting http://jsfiddle.net/ great for JS help or for the occasional test. What else do you know of? One answer per question. I'll let lints and validators slide since you do paste code into them. Mention a weakness if you do know one so others wont be surprised or disappointed.

• User Experience Guidance for Developers: Anti-Patterns

  Picked this up from a recent Dublin Google Technology User Group meeting: Android App Mistakes: Avoiding the Anti-Patterns by Mark Murphy, CommonsWare Interesting approach of "anti-patterns" aimed at mobile developers (in this case Android), looking at the best way to use code and what's in the SDK while combining it with UX guidance (the premise being the developer does the lot). Interestingly, the idea came through that developers need to stop trying to make one O/S behave like another--on UX grounds. Also, pretty clear that a web-based paradigm is being promoting for Android (translators tell me that translating an Android app reminded them of translating web pages too). Haven't see the "anti"-approach before, developer cookbooks and design patterns sure. Check out the slideshare presentation.

• Motion Sensing Fog Machine Increases Savings and Spook Factor

  This DIY add-on switches a standard fog machine from always-on to motion-activated–increase your savings and spook factor at the same time. Courtesy of tinker Greg, this modification involves a new relay and motion sensor mounted onto the existing switch of a store-bought fog machine. When the motion-sensor detects motion the fog machine releases a burst of fog for 5 seconds and then disarms itself for 10 seconds–long enough for the startled victim to move on and for the machine to recharge for the next passerby. Here are some ideas: Pair Programming TDD Automated Check-in Policies Talks given by experts Awards for coding excellence Encourage competition among engineers to contribute to GitHub Publish standards and practices docs on the intranet site "Gamification" of engineering. Somehow make becoming badasses into a game they will enjoy playing Training Showcase github checkins on screens around the office Add an "engineer of the month" to the intranet home page How can I drive traffic to the intranet home page? What crazy futuristic idea would drive engineers to go to the page every day to see who of their peers are making more money than them (inferred via recognition) and then go off and improve their skills and productivity to see their standings improve on the home page??? Or any ideas just to foster collaboration and love for their jobs so they start taking more pride in their work?? Don't take my ideas as symptomatic of our org. I take full responsibility for not knowing the right way to do this.

  I would like to know the best or most effective way to test for 2D collision. I also can do AABBs but when you have a line, for example, that is rotated 45º, and it is really long. it will be hitting things when it shouldn't. I might be able to go through the pixels to see if they are touching others, but that might be slow if I had a big picture. and it might add some complications if I had a movie clip made of several images. How do I check collision between two Images? How would I do circle to box? Please help : ) PS: I do know java so you can write with java syntax and then use a made up GL

• Remmina 1.0 problems

  I downloaded, compiled remmina and freerdp from the source repositories. Unlikely I am having troubles in RDP connections. When I initiate any RDP connection from Remmina, Remmina is closed immidialtely. I tried to open freerdp from terminal, it worked like a charm. I tried to open remmina from terminal to check errors. It says: segmentation fault - after connecting to any rdp connection I got the source from git: git clone git://github.com/FreeRDP/Remmina.git git clone git://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP.git// Compilation is successfull with all dependencies. I tried to remove old remmina 0.9.9.1 with no chance I tried to reboot my machine and issue ldconfig with no chance I switched to other rdp clients right now. How can I be able to fix this? the old remmina was working well with RDP but causing sometimes high memory consumption (about 1GB of RAM) I am using Ubuntu 12.04.1 64bit

  My home page could be potentially linked as: http://example.com http://example.com/ http://example.com/?ref=1 http://example.com/index.html http://example.com/index.html?ref=2 (the same page is served for all those urls) I am thinking about defining a canonical url to make sure google doesn't consider those urls to be different pages: <link rel="canonical" href="/" /> (relative) <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/" /> (trailing slash) <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com" /> (no trailing slash) Which one should be used? I would just slap / but messing with canonical seems like a scary business so I wanted double check first. Is it a good idea at all for defining a canonical url for a home page?

• Collision Detection Game Design and Architecture

  I've reading some articles about collision detection. My question here is about ideas on the design for it. Baically I have a C++ game that has a main loop with entities with an update method. Based on keyboard input, these characters updates their positions. My question is not about how to detect collisions, it's about getting ideas in which is the best way to implement this. The game has a main character but also enemies that have to collide between them, so I'm not sure where to make all the iterations for checking collisions and if the right way is to check everything against everything. • Toolbox Mod Makes the Wii Ultra Portable

  Given the social nature of most Wii games, modifying a toolbox to serve as a Wii briefcase to make toting it to a friend’s house easy is only fitting. Courtesy of tinker SpicaJames, we find this simple but effective toolbox modification. James originally started his search by investigating getting a Pelican case for his Wii and accessories. When he found the $125 price tag prohibitive (as many of us would for such a side project) he sought out alternatives. A cheap $12 toolbox, a little impact foam, and some handy work with a pair of tin snips to cut out shapes for the Wiimotes, and he had a super cheap and easy to pack and unpack Wii briefcase.
