  • How to extend the list of available Java Locales

    I am looking for a way to add more Locales to the Locales available in Java 1.6. But the Locales I want to create do not have ISO-3166 country codes, nor ISO-639 language codes. Is there any way to do this anyways? The Locales I want to add only differ in the language names, but the smaller an ethnic group is, the more picky they get about their identity ;-) So I thought about extending an existing Locale, something like UserDefinedLocale extends Locale { UserDefinedLocale (Locale parentLocale) {...} } but java.util.Locale is final, which makes it especially hard to hack something around... So, is the idea that the list of Java Locales is exhaustive? Am I the first to miss some more Locales?

  • C++ for small, individual projects (i.e. hobby programming)

    I recently started C++. I am using PHP right now and decided to take a look at C++. Web programming had me working with a couple of languages, with a couple of people. I wanted to do programming where I only had to bother with one language and create small utility apps (mostly not web-based). I wanted a compiled, strongly-type language without memorizing a tome of classes. Basically I wanted to learn C++ for the following: mobile programming (I don't ever want to go touching Java, and I don't have a Mac for Objective C or IPhone SDK) small desktop apps like DTRs, POSs creating small desktop-based games creating small Air-like applications that can access the web for additional content I heard that C++ is not beginner-friendly and is mostly used for huge projects with lots of calculations and fine details (like 3D games). Is it practical or even possible for me to use C++ for the above cases? (Sorry, I haven't delved on C++ that much yet, so aside from "huge, monolithic project", I don't know any other uses for it)

    So in class we get this school task where we need to check if one of the fields in unfilled and display an error. No we did this but for some strange reason it doesnt display a error when a radio button is unchecked. (textfield null check works fine) I've tried with a friend many possabilities but they all doesnt seem to work. We have been stuck at this task for 2 hours. Now we have tried making seperate if's but that doesnt seem to work too.   • Programmatically set browser cookie (Firefox)

    I know from this question that Firefox 3.0 and up stores its cookies in an SQLite database. My question is: can you access this database from other desktop programs in such a way that you could add a cookie? I realize this has security implications. However, I do not want to read them at all. I want to be able to set one cookie if possible. I don't even want to overwrite a cookie. I just want to add it if it isn't there already. This is sort of a personal project I'm working on for fun. This question is mostly language agnostic. I would prefer a solution in C#, but proof of concept in any language will suffice. Extra credit: It would be cool to set the same cookie in Internet Explorer, too

  • best alternative to in-definition initialization of static class members? (for SVN keywords)

    I'm storing expanded SVN keyword literals for .cpp files in 'static char const *const' class members and want to store the .h descriptions as similarly as possible. In short, I need to guarantee single instantiation of a static member (presumably in a .cpp file) to an auto-generated non-integer literal living in a potentially shared .h file. Unfortunately the language makes no attempt to resolve multiple instantiations resulting from assignments made outside class definitions and explicitly forbids non-integer inits inside class definitions. My best attempt (using static-wrapping internal classes) is not too dirty, but I'd really like to do better. I get why the language shirks the whole resolution issue, but it'd be very convenient if an inverted extern member qualifier were provided, where the definition code was visible in class definitions to any caller but only actually invoked at the point of a single special declaration elsewhere. Anyway, I digress. What's the best solution for the language we've got, template or otherwise? Thanks!

    There are some tasks where the obvious language choice is with scripting languages: bash, Python, Ruby, Tcl... however I find it hard to protect a company IP once the product is delivered because the application is never compiled. The client will have complete access to every single line of code. Which one are the choices to protect a product IP when it is best implemented with scripting languages? (switching to a compiled language such as C++ should not be an option) I know that some interpreted languages can be compiled, but there are cases where the process can be inverted

  • Should I be using libraries if I'm trying to learn how to program?

    I have been programming "a lot" in the past few months and at first I was trying to find the "easyest" language. Fortunately I realized that it's not about the language, it's about learning HOW to code. I ran into the Stanford lectures online (programming methodology) and I watched them all (around 23 hours total) awhile ago. Then I got into Java ME and programmed about 28.47% of a mobile RPG game (only around 2k lines of code). I feel like I learned a lot from those two experiences compared to previous ones but now that I'm moving into flash/actionscript 3.0 development and I'm finding myself learning like I did when I first started with PHP. I'm not really getting whats under the hood kind of. I'm finding myself using libraries to speed up development time which doesn't seem like a bad thing BUT I personally do not know how to write the libraries myself off hand. So should I be coding everything myself or is it ok to use libraries when you don't even know how to code them?

  • Will Haskell be a good choice for my task?

    I'm starting a new project and don't know which language to use. My 'must have' requirements are: Be able to run on Windows/LinuxMacOs natively (native executable) - user should be able to just run the exe (when on Windows for example) and see the results. No runtimes/interpreters (no jvm, clr, etc) - one file download should be enough to run the application. Full unicode support. Be able to manipulate OS threads (create them, run multiple tasks in parallel on multi-core CPUs, etc). Be reasonably fast (Python level performance and better). To have some kind of standard library that does low-level, mundane tasks. Not very niche and have some community behind it to be able to ask questions. My 'nice to have' requirements are: Language should be functional It should have good string manipulation capabilities (not necessarily regex) Not extremely hard to learn I'm thinking about Haskell now but keeping in mind OCaml as well. Please advice if my choice is correct.

Basically we need to develop a "help' module like this one from ebay http://pages.ebay.com/help/index.html which will contain a lot of static pages with nice URLs for SEO. The application must run fast using low computer resources. We have been looking to use php on a custom made mvc framework but we received advice from other sources that py/django is the exactly language/framework that we need in terms of maintainability and development speed because it was developed for exactly this kind of projects so I need an expert advice on this matter with pro and cons for each choice.

  • Determining where a function is defined in C#?

    Hey all - I am a complete novice at C# (I've never used it before) and recently needed to look over some code written in it. I spent the longest time trying to track down a nonexistent method in a class that didn't seem to be defined anywhere in the class that was using it. I later found out it was an "extension method," which I gather is a method grafted onto another class by some source. I completely understand the rationale behind this language feature and actually think it's quite nice. However, as someone without much experience in the language, it makes it harder to look up unfamiliar methods, since the method in question could be defined anywhere. My question is this: given an unfamiliar method call in C#, what's the best way for me to look up more info on it, given that it could be an extension method defined in an entirely separate class?   • Using Google to find programming answers (does locale matter)?

    I have overseas developers working for me, and sometimes I am surprised they can't find the same resources online that I do. They are in a South America country... and Google defaults to their language/locale. What do you think about this, when using it to solve computer programs? There is very little software development done in their country (as compared to the US). Is Google skewing their results for articles in their language or posted on sites that are local to them? Should I insist that they bypass their local Google search and have them use the US version?

  • PHP array performance

    Hi, this is my first question on Stackoverflow, please bear with me. I'm testing an algorithm for 2d bin packing and I've chosen PHP to mock it up as it's my bread-and-butter language nowadays. As you can see on http://themworks.com/pack_v0.2/oopack.php?ol=1 it works pretty well, but you need to wait around 10-20 seconds for 100 rectangles to pack. For some hard to handle sets it would hit the php's 30s runtime limit. I did some profiling and it shows that most of the time my script goes through different parts of a small 2d array with 0's and 1's in it. It either checks if certain cell equals to 0/1 or sets it to 0/1. It can do such operations million times and each times it takes few microseconds. I guess I could use an array of booleans in a statically typed language and things would be faster. Or even make an array of 1 bit values. I'm thinking of converting the whole thing to some compiled language. Is PHP just not good for it? If I do need to convert it to let's say C++, how good are the automatic converters? My script is just a lot of for loops with basic arrays and objects manipulations. Thank you! Edit. This function gets called more than any other. Of course, these cannot be free, and one price is the performance. In a developer’s perspective, if O/R mapping is chosen, I consistently choose the declarative LINQ code, unless this kind of overhead is unacceptable. Data retrieving overhead After talking about the O/R mapping specific issue. Now look into the LINQ to SQL specific issues, for example, performance in the data retrieving process. The previous post has explained that the SQL translating and executing is complex. Actually, the LINQ to SQL pipeline is similar to the compiler pipeline. It consists of about 15 steps to translate an C# expression tree to SQL statement, which can be categorized as: Convert: Invoke SqlProvider.BuildQuery() to convert the tree of Expression nodes into a tree of SqlNode nodes; Bind: Used visitor pattern to figure out the meanings of names according to the mapping info, like a property for a column, etc.; Flatten: Figure out the hierarchy of the query; Rewrite: for SQL Server 2000, if needed Reduce: Remove the unnecessary information from the tree. Parameterize Format: Generate the SQL statement string; Parameterize: Figure out the parameters, for example, a reference to a local variable should be a parameter in SQL; Materialize: Executes the reader and convert the result back into typed objects. Fortunately, there is a built-in way to cache the translated query. And it also uses lock to make sure translating once in multi-threading scenarios. Static SQL / stored procedures without translating Another way to avoid the translating overhead is to use static SQL or stored procedures, just as the above examples. Because this is a functional programming series, this article not dive into. For the details, Scott Guthrie already has some excellent articles: LINQ to SQL (Part 6: Retrieving Data Using Stored Procedures) LINQ to SQL (Part 7: Updating our Database using Stored Procedures) LINQ to SQL (Part 8: Executing Custom SQL Expressions) Data changing overhead By looking into the data updating process, it also needs a lot of work: Begins transaction Processes the changes (ChangeProcessor) Walks through the objects to identify the changes Determines the order of the changes Executes the changings LINQ queries may be needed to execute the changings, like the first example in this article, an object needs to be retrieved before changed, then the above whole process of data retrieving will be went through If there is user customization, it will be executed, for example, a table’s INSERT / UPDATE / DELETE can be customized in the O/R designer It is important to keep these overhead in mind. Before .NET 4.0, LINQ to SQL has an issue (not sure if it is a bug). LINQ to SQL internally uses ADO.NET, but it does not set the SqlParameter.Size for a variable-length argument, like argument of NVARCHAR type, etc. So for two queries with the same SQL but different argument length:using (NorthwindDataContext database = new NorthwindDataContext()) { database.Products.Where(product => product.ProductName == "A") .Select(product => product.ProductID).ToArray(); // The same SQL and argument type, different argument length. database.Products.Where(product => product.ProductName == "AA") .Select(product => product.ProductID).ToArray(); } Pay attention to the argument length in the translated SQL:exec sp_executesql N'SELECT [t0].[ProductID] FROM [dbo].[Products] AS [t0] WHERE [t0].[ProductName] = @p0',N'@p0 nvarchar(1)',@p0=N'A' exec sp_executesql N'SELECT [t0].[ProductID] FROM [dbo].[Products] AS [t0] WHERE [t0].[ProductName] = @p0',N'@p0 nvarchar(2)',@p0=N'AA' Here is the overhead: The first query’s query plan cache is not reused by the second one:SELECT sys.syscacheobjects.cacheobjtype, sys.dm_exec_cached_plans.usecounts, sys.syscacheobjects.[sql] FROM sys.syscacheobjects INNER JOIN sys.dm_exec_cached_plans ON sys.syscacheobjects.bucketid = sys.dm_exec_cached_plans.bucketid; They actually use different query plans. Again, pay attention to the argument length in the [sql] column (@p0 nvarchar(2) / @p0 nvarchar(1)).   • SQL Spatial: Getting “nearest” calculations working properly

    If you’ve ever done spatial work with SQL Server, I hope you’ve come across the ‘nearest’ problem. You have five thousand stores around the world, and you want to identify the one that’s closest to a particular place. Maybe you want the store closest to the LobsterPot office in Adelaide, at -34.925806, 138.605073. Or our new US office, at 42.524929, -87.858244. Or maybe both! You know how to do this. You don’t want to use an aggregate MIN or MAX, because you want the whole row, telling you which store it is. You want to use TOP, and if you want to find the closest store for multiple locations, you use APPLY. Let’s do this (but I’m going to use addresses in AdventureWorks2012, as I don’t have a list of stores). Oh, and before I do, let’s make sure we have a spatial index in place. I’m going to use the default options. This is definitely working. I know both those City locations, even if the AddressLine1s don’t quite ring a bell. I’m sure I’ll be able to find them next time I’m in the area. But of course what I’m concerned about from a querying perspective is what’s happened behind the scenes – the execution plan. This isn’t pretty. It’s not using my index. It’s sucking every row out of the Address table TWICE (which sucks), and then it’s sorting them by the distance to find the smallest one. It’s not pretty, and it takes a while. Mind you, I do like the fact that it saw an indexed view it could use for the State and Country details – that’s pretty neat. But yeah – users of my nifty website aren’t going to like how long that query takes. The frustrating thing is that I know that I can use the index to find locations that are within a particular distance of my locations quite easily, and Microsoft recommends this for solving the ‘nearest’ problem, as described at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/library/ff929109.aspx. Now, in the first example on this page, it says that the query there will use the spatial index. But when I run it on my machine, it does nothing of the sort. I’m not particularly impressed. But what we see here is that parallelism has kicked in. In my scenario, it’s split the data up into 4 threads, but it’s still slow, and not using my index. It’s disappointing. But I can persuade it with hints! If I tell it to FORCESEEK, or use my index, or even turn off the parallelism with MAXDOP 1, then I get the index being used, and it’s a thing of beauty! Part of the plan is here: It’s massive, and it’s ugly, and it uses a TVF… but it’s quick. The way it works is to hook into the GeodeticTessellation function, which is essentially finds where the point is, and works out through the spatial index cells that surround it. This then provides a framework to be able to see into the spatial index for the items we want. You can read more about it at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb895265.aspx#tessellation – including a bunch of pretty diagrams. One of those times when we have a much more complex-looking plan, but just because of the good that’s going on. This tessellation stuff was introduced in SQL Server 2012. But my query isn’t using it. When I try to use the FORCESEEK hint on the Person.Address table, I get the friendly error: Msg 8622, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Query processor could not produce a query plan because of the hints defined in this query. Resubmit the query without specifying any hints and without using SET FORCEPLAN. And I’m almost tempted to just give up and move back to the old method of checking increasingly large circles around my location. After all, I can even leverage multiple OUTER APPLY clauses just like I did in my recent Lookup post. It feels old-school though, when I’m dealing with SQL 2012 (and later) versions. So why isn’t my query doing what it’s supposed to? Remember the query... The following requirements must be met for a Nearest Neighbor query to use a spatial index: A spatial index must be present on one of the spatial columns and the STDistance() method must use that column in the WHERE and ORDER BY clauses. The TOP clause cannot contain a PERCENT statement. The WHERE clause must contain a STDistance() method. If there are multiple predicates in the WHERE clause then the predicate containing STDistance() method must be connected by an AND conjunction to the other predicates. The STDistance() method cannot be in an optional part of the WHERE clause. The first expression in the ORDER BY clause must use the STDistance() method. Sort order for the first STDistance() expression in the ORDER BY clause must be ASC. All the rows for which STDistance returns NULL must be filtered out. Let’s start from the top. 1. Needs a spatial index on one of the columns that’s in the STDistance call. Yup, got the index. 2. No ‘PERCENT’. Yeah, I don’t have that. 3. The WHERE clause needs to use STDistance(). Ok, but I’m not filtering, so that should be fine. 4. Yeah, I don’t have multiple predicates. 5. The first expression in the ORDER BY is my distance, that’s fine. 6. But I don’t have any NULL values, so that shouldn’t affect me either. ...but something’s wrong. I do actually need to satisfy #3. And I do need to make sure #7 is being handled properly, because there are some situations (eg, differing SRIDs) where STDistance can return NULL. It says so at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb933808.aspx – “STDistance() always returns null if the spatial reference IDs (SRIDs) of the geography instances do not match.” So if I simply make sure that I’m filtering out the rows that return NULL… …then it’s blindingly fast, I get the right results, and I’ve got the complex-but-brilliant plan that I wanted. It just wasn’t overly intuitive, despite being documented. @rob_farley
