Software development has been here from at most 1960's and I honestly can't imagine working with codebase without version control.   I’m making a simple web browser for work eeh, what I’d like to know is if its possible to save a file of a particular extension to a particular file. I currently use googels chrome when downloading a file it places this (regardless of extension) in a downloads folder without asking where I ant to download this too. I want to achieve the same except that downloads with the extension .dwg are placed automatically in a folder named DWG DOWNLAODS… Dose anybody know how to achieve this in vb.net?

• Installing Ruby 1.9.1 on Ubuntu?

  I wonder about installing the latest version of Ruby on Ubuntu 9.04. Now I can run through the ./configure and make stuff fine, but what I wonder about: how to avoid conflicts with the packaging system? For example if some other package I install depends on Ruby, wouldn't the package manager install the (outdated) Ruby package and in the worst case overwrite my files? So I think I need some way to tell Ubuntu that Ruby is in fact already installed?

  I am currently writing a formal research report, and I'll be including code with this report. Question: Is there an accepted way of displaying code in research reports? I'm thinking both in terms of font, spacing, et cetera, and whether the code should be displayed inside the document, or in an appendix. The code will be JavaScript and PHP. None of the sections of code will be more than 25 lines (so they're mere snippets). There will be approx. half a dozen snippets. Each of the snippets will have a couple of paragraphs explaining what is happening in the code, and a discussion on its pros/cons. I have no contact with the body the report will be submitted to, and they have no published guidelines on how to format code (please do not question these points). Any help considered and appreciated.

  Hello all, The app I'm developing has a custom file format for its files, and I'd like to be able to use the "Open In ..." feature of iOS which lets users e.g. email each other a file and then open it directly in the app. I've gotten as far as adding the CFBundleDocumentType stuff in the Info.plist file, but the problem is the LSItemContentTypes. From what I've read, I need to provide the actual file as a UTI, rather than just saying ".myfileextension", and I can't find a lot about how to create UTI's in a iOS app. Anyone know?

• Static code analysis for new language. Where to start?

  I just been given a new assignment which looks like its going to be an interesting challenge. The customer is wanting a code style checking tool to be developed for their internal (soon to be open sourced) programming language which runs on the JVM. The language syntax is very Java like. The customer basically wants me to produce something like checkstyle. So my question is this, how would you approach this problem? Given a clean slate what recommendations would you make to the customer? I think I have 3 options Write something from scratch. Id prefer not to do this as it seems like this sort of code analysis tool problem has been solved so many times that there must be a more "framework" or "platform" orientated approach. Fork an existing code style checking tool and modify the parsing to fit with this new language etc etc Extend or plug into an existing static code analysis tool. (maybe write a plugin for Yasca?) Maybe you would like to share your experiences in this area? Thanks for reading

• Python: Most efficient way to concatenate and rearrange files

  Hi, I am reading from several files, each file is divided into 2 pieces, first a header section of a few thousand lines followed by a body of a few thousand. My problem is I need to concatenate these files into one file where all the headers are on the top followed by the body. Currently I am using two loops; one to pull out all the headers and write them, and the second to write the body of each file (I also include a tmp_count variable to limit the number of lines to be loading into memory before dumping to file). This is pretty slow - about 6min for 13gb file. Can anyone tell me how to optimize this or if there is a faster way to do this in python ? Thanks!   I'm working on a small open source project, ELLCC, that uses clang/LLVM as a cross compiler for various target processors. For the runtime environment, I'm using the NetBSD libraries and porting them to target Linux and standalone systems. I want to run a POSIX compliance test suite on the code. I've found the Open POSIX Test Suite, which looks like a good start, but it hasn't been updated since 2005. I've done some preliminary testing (with gcc and ecc under Linux), and it looks like it needs a few updates for modern compilers. My questions are: Does the Open POSIX Test Suite live on somewhere in a more up to date form? Are there other open source alternatives?
