• Adding VFACE semantic causes overlapping output semantics error

  My pixel shader input is a follows struct VertexShaderOut { float4 Position : POSITION0; float2 TextureCoordinates : TEXCOORD0; float4 PositionClone : TEXCOORD1; // Final position values must be cloned to be used in PS calculations float3 Normal : TEXCOORD2; //float3x3 TBN : TEXCOORD3; float CullFace : VFACE; // A negative value faces backwards (-1), while a positive value (+1) faces the camera (requires ps_3_0) }; I'm using ps_3_0 and I wish to utilise the VFACE semantic for correct lighting of normals depending on the cull mode. If I add the VFACE semantic then I get the following errors: error X5639: dcl usage+index: position,0 has already been specified for an output register error X4504: overlapping output semantics Why would this occur? I can't see why there would be too much data.

• Migrating SQL Server Databases – The DBA’s Checklist (Part 2)

  Continuing from Part 1  , our Migration Checklist continues: Step 5: Update statistics It is always a good idea to update the statistics of the database that you have just installed or migrated. To do this, run the following command against the target database: sp_updatestats The sp_updatestats system stored procedure runs the UPDATE STATISTICS command against every user and system table in the database.  However, a word of caution: running the sp_updatestats against a database with a compatibility level below 90 (SQL Server 2005) will reset the automatic UPDATE STATISTICS settings for every index and statistics of every table in the database. You may therefore want to change the compatibility mode before you run the command. Another thing you should remember to do is to ensure the new database has its AUTO_CREATE_STATISTICS and AUTO_UPDATE_STATISTICS properties set to ON. You can do so using the ALTER DATABASE command or from the SSMS. Step 6: Set database options You may have to change the state of a database after it has been restored. If the database was changed to single-user or read-only mode before backup, the restored copy will also retain these settings. This may not be an issue when you are manually restoring from Enterprise Manager or the Management Studio since you can change the properties. However, this is something to be mindful of if the restore process is invoked by an automated job or script and the database needs to be written to immediately after restore. You may want to check the database’s status programmatically in such cases. Another important option you may want to set for the newly restored / attached database is PAGE_VERIFY. This option specifies how you want SQL Server to ensure the physical integrity of the data. It is a new option from SQL Server 2005 and can have three values: CHECKSUM (default for SQL Server 2005 and latter databases), TORN_PAGE_DETECTION (default when restoring a pre-SQL Server 2005 database) or NONE. Torn page detection was itself an option for SQL Server 2000 databases. From SQL Server 2005, when PAGE_VERIFY is set to CHECKSUM, the database engine calculates the checksum for a page’s contents and writes it to the page header before storing it in disk. When the page is read from the disk, the checksum is computed again and compared with the checksum stored in the header.  Torn page detection works much like the same way in that it stores a bit in the page header for every 512 byte sector. When data is read from the page, the torn page bits stored in the header is compared with the respective sector contents. When PAGE_VERIFY is set to NONE, SQL Server does not perform any checking, even if torn page data or checksums are present in the page header.  This may not be something you would want to set unless there is a very specific reason.  Microsoft suggests using the CHECKSUM page verify option as this offers more protection. Step 7: Map database users to logins A common database migration issue is related to user access. Windows and SQL Server native logins that existed in the source instance and had access to the database may not be present in the destination. Even if the logins exist in the destination, the mapping between the user accounts and the logins will not be automatic. You can use a special system stored procedure called sp_change_users_login to address these situations. The procedure needs to be run against the newly attached or restored database and can accept four parameters. Depending on what you want to do, you may be using less than four though. The first parameter, @Action, can take three values. When you specify @Action = ‘Report’, the system will provide you with a list of database users which are not mapped to any login. If you want to map a database user to an existing SQL Server login, the value for @Action will be ‘Update_One’. In this case, you will only need to provide the database user name and the login it will map to. So if your newly restored database has a user account called “bob” and there is already a SQL Server login with the same name and you want to map the user to the login, you will execute a query like the following: sp_change_users_login         @Action = ‘Update_One’,         @UserNamePattern = ‘bob’,         @LoginName = ‘bob’ If the login does not exist, you can instruct SQL Server to create the login with the same name. In this case you will need to provide a password for the login and the value of the @Action parameter will be ‘Auto_Fix’. If the login already exists, it will be automatically mapped to the user account. Unfortunately sp_change_users_login system stored procedure cannot be used to map database users to trusted logins (Windows accounts) in SQL Server. • Internet doesn't work by default

  After upgrading to Precise, I am required to run 'sudo dhclient eth0' in a terminal in order to get the internet to work. Everything worked perfectly fine on Oneiric, so It's really puzzling me. I'm thinking it could possibly be something with the kernel, but who knows. • Problem while installing amd driver on ubuntu 12.10 on my dell inspiron 5520

  I have a dell inspiron 5520 which has switchable graphics mode with amd radeon hd 7600m. I have recently installed ubuntu 12.10 alongside windows. But i can't install the driver for grahics card. While typing "sudo apt-get install fglrx-installer" it says unable to locate the package. While adding the repository ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates it shows error that "The requested URL /ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary- i386/Packages was not found on this server." In another attempt i download driver from amd-driver site, and then installing from terminal it shows that some errors come while installing and I get the blank screen only. So how to install the amd driver on my laptop.

• Can't Boot, video drivers or x-server problem?

  I was uninstalling some programs that I installed to try and get my iPod touch working with Ubuntu (I gave up on that) when ubuntu just crashed. Now after I choose ubuntu in GRUB, it gives me a screen that says "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode: your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself" It was working just fine before I started to uninstall those programs. I think that I might have uninstalled something necessary to the system. If I click OK on the screen, it gives me options to reconfigure, troubleshoot, exit to console, or restart X. But no matter what I choose I still can't boot into ubuntu - I get stuck looking at the splash screen which stalls forever. I was receiving support from one of my mate's and he was doing something with the LiveCD, and now the message doesn't pop up any more, I just get stuck at a never ending splash screen. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

• Screen magnifier wrecks login screen — how to get rid of it?

  In the Ubuntu / GNOME login screen, I tried some of the different accessibility settings out of curiosity. Big mistake! Enabling the "use screen magnifier" (or whatever) option breaks down the view horribly, and makes it impossible to even access the settings again: (Right click & View Image for full size) Yes, I tried to access every corner of the screen using the mouse, but there's just chaos everywhere. Fortunately, I can still log in (pressing "Esc" makes the normal login dialog appear on the left-hand monitor). My question is, how to disable the "magnifier" option outside of the login screen itself? (By editing some config file perhaps?) I don't care about getting the magnifier mode to work properly - just make it go away altogether, please.

• iOS Game Center - Quit turn-based games for previous version of app

  I have a game on the iOS App Store that uses Game Center for turn-based multiplayer (GKTurnBasedMatch). I recently updated the app with a new game mode and I had to change the network protocol for that to happen. As a result I marked my new version as incompatible with the old one. That is, you cannot see the old games within the new app and you cannot initiate a game with someone with the old version of the app. This works as expected. However: The old games remain active after updating. There seems to be no way to quit them. What is worse is that they still count to the maximum number of games you can start. I have been contacted by players that can only start 1-3 games without hitting the roof. Have anyone experienced this before? Is there any way to quit the games? Thanks in advance

• Why not Green Threads?

  Whilst I know questions on this have been covered already (e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5713142/green-threads-vs-non-green-threads), I don't feel like I've got a satisfactory answer. The question is: why don't JVM's support green threads anymore? It says this on the code-style Java FAQ: A green thread refers to a mode of operation for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in which all code is executed in a single operating system thread. And this over on java.sun.com: The downside is that using green threads means system threads on Linux are not taken advantage of and so the Java virtual machine is not scalable when additional CPUs are added. It seems to me that the JVM could have a pool of system processes equal to the number of cores, and then run green threads on top of that. This could offer some big advantages when you have a very number large of threads which block often (mostly because current JVM's cap the number of threads). Thoughts?

• XNA Skinning Sample - exporting from Blender recognize only first animation clip

  (and sorry for my English) I'm using animation components from XNA Skinning Sample. It works great but when I export a model from Blender, it does not recognize any other animation clips than the first one. So I have three animation clips, but XNA recognize only one. Also, when I looked up on Xml file of the model in Debug\Content\obj directory, there is only one animation clip, but when I check code directly from .fbx file, it seems to be alright.   Time for some book news update. CLR via C#, 3rd Edition seems to have been out for a little while now. The book was released in early Feb this year, and needless to say my copy is on it’s way. I can barely wait to dig in and chew on the goodies that one of the best technical authors and software professionals I respect has in store. • What can I do to give some more love and disk space to my database on Ubuntu?

  I'm new to linux. I've deployed a db to ubuntu server on amazon and found out I'm low on disk space. did df (see below) - and found out that I'm 89% capacity on one file system, but less on others. What does this mean? Do I have a few partitions and can now utilize others besides /dev/xvda1? Also /dev/xvdb seems large, is it safe to put the db in it and only use it? • SSD temperature sensor readout with hddtemp

Was anyone able to readout the temp-sensor of a SSD with hddtemp?

• Wireless iwconfig rate auto too low

  Hi, left to its own devices my wireless connects at too low a speed. I have a 20meg internet connection and my wireless is slowing it down to like 3meg. When I reboot into windows it's fine. When I run iwconfig eth1 rate 24M or even 48M the connection is much faster and runs fine, why won't it automatically go higher? Is this the fault of the driver? I am running Broadcom's driver compiled from source. Would adding iwconfig eth1 rate 24M to rc.local be the right way to force it at boot?
