In linux prompt,we can type !mysql and so on to match a history command to save time.
Is there a utility for windows(XP to be exact) that enables this feature?
I'm quite annoyed with my firefox and Flash files :
When I try opening a .swf file with it:
If the file is on the web (via http://...), it plays normally in browser
If the file is local (via file:///...), firefox only show me a dialog to download it
It tried opening a web swf file, downloading it then opening it locally, it's the same. So I guess it's a firefox problem.
I'm on Gentoo Linux, and it started today, without any apparent reason.
I'm running a certain script that is using a non-root user to do the following...
mkdir: cannot create directory `/srv/www/example.com/releases'
*** [err :: 12.23.45.789] : Permission denied
How would I allow user xyz to have permanent permissions to do so and still keep this web server secure? Also is it possible to make it recursive for all subfolders?
I know its probably chmod something but I'm not that linux savy, thanks.
when I press Ctrl+Alt+F{1..12}, it switches me to other virtual terminal.
When I have VNC/rdesktop client (and there it is VMWare/Virtualbox with other Linux) I want to switch virtual terminal remotely, but just pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 switches things locally.
VirtualBox/VMWare often provides special means to send Ctrl+Alt+Del, but not Ctrl+Alt+F1.
(I already know that I can log in over ssh and chvt)
I have an SDK that must install 32-bit and 64-bit files in the correct places under /usr/lib
for a variety of Linux distributions.
For example, it appears that for Fedora, /usr/lib64 is the 64bit lib, but for Debian based systems, /usr/lib is the 64bit directory.
I want to find out if there is a reliable way to determine the correct locations.
More specifically, is there a way an install script can determine programmatically which are the correct equivalents for /usr/lib for 32- and 64-bit libraries on a given distribution?
How can i upgrade mysql version 5.0.22 to version 5.0.51a ??
My server info:
Linux version 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 (gcc version 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-52)
Thanks
I have a generalized program to be run both in windows and linux.
When I run the program in the windows console it halts at a point where the .sh file is to be executed with a window popping asking for "which program to use" and requires manual intervention to cancel.
My question is: How do I change the setting available in the console that will let not the execution to halt when an unknown file extension is encountered?
i wonder if there is any application for the linux bash shell to make it more easier to type.
eg. if i type "c" then maybe it would give me all commands that starts with that letter for example "cd", "cp" etc. then if i type "cd" and press space it give me all the parameters for that command.
is there application of this kind to automatize command typing?
Hi,
I am running Chrome on Linux. How can I install different dictionaries (British English and Polish), so that I will get the fly-spell functionality in these languages?
Is there any website that has complete list of all the shortcuts of applications/softwares of Windows, Mac, Linux Platforms. If Atleast for popular and veryuseful softwares.
I have pretty important stuff on my PC (using Windows).
All the programming files, passwords etc.
And now I thought:
Is that even safe to store all this information on a hard drive? What if some virus (or a pseudo-antivirus gets it)
M.b. it is better to buy Mac for this purpose?
I kinda don't like Linux, cause I hate making million small decisions manually (what drivers to install etc)
Will like to hear some opinions.
This hasn't happened to me yet but I am documenting this process just in case.
Let's say I can't remember my root password for my linux server. Every example of this scenerio that I can find says to first boot into single user mode. What if my server is currently running in multiuser mode and I have no sessions open as root. How exactly do I order an orderly shutdown without root access so that I can begin the password recovery process?
Users on a linux (CentOS4) machine I administer consistently forget to empty the trash. Since the people work on big files, this can fill up the /home partition very quickly.
Therefore, I would like to create a script that automatically empties the user's trash whenever they log out.
How would I do that?
How can I tell if my hard drives have a battery backed write cache (BBWC)?
How can I tell if it is enabled and/or configured correctly?
I don't have physical access to my server. It's a GNU/Linux box.
I can provide supplemental incremental information/details as requested. My frame of reference is that of a DBA -- I have access and privileges, but (usually) only tread where I know am supposed to. :)

I want to install the latest version in Debian, and I've got its source file,a tarball file, from here: http://snapshot.debian.org/package/get-iplayer/2.82-2/
but as a linux noob,I don't know how to do with it.
usually when I come across a tar.gz file, I can run command as follows:
tar -xzvf
./configure
make
make install
but in this case,it seems that this method doesn't fit
so what should I do,anyone can help me ?
I have recently set up a Linux server for my college which also hosts the college website and other downloadables. This server is linked to outside world using a leased line connection of 1mbps capacity.
My problem is that the users complain that the downloads from the server are very slow, how can I imporve this?
What things should I be looking at.
My current server config:
Dell vostro260s with 4Gb of ram and i3 processor.
I'm part of a small group of people working on video games. We want to set up our own boxes to serve the website and handle the source control for development work. I have the most technical expertise, but its been a few years since I've set up or played with Linux or other open source operating systems.
So I'm a bit out of the loop on what are the user-friendly open source operating systems out there right now?
Hi,
I'm very new to Android development.
I want to run an Android application on Windows using eclipse that has been already developed on Linux OS. I tried to copy the source/res and menifest file of Android application form linux and started creating a new project on windows. I tried to replace the source/res and menifest of newly created Project on windows with one on linux. It was unable to generate R.java file.
I wonder if java is portable accross platform then why I couldn't create and compile a new project on Windows from Linux.
Thanx in advance.
I have a VPS server, and have trouble setting up java.
I wonder, is there any way to test to see if java works?
My VPS server is Linux and I use PuTTY to communicate with the server from my own windows computer.
Thanks
i have a 1and1 account dedicated linux machine never had a problem with it.

hey, i have written php script and it frozen mysql and when i restarted my linux (debian) there was something written that mysql database is full
and now when i want to run mysql there is an error: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
does someone know how to fix it?
Simple really
Have a linux server - 4 processes are running at or in excess of 100% cpu usage.
What exactly does this mean? I assumed nothing could go beyond 100% :)
Currently I've a programme taking up too much of CPU.
How could I limit the amount of CPU it occupies?
OS is Linux, Fedora.
I can't modify the source code of that programme.
What I need is a Bash command.
