• Are there localization tools which spot content strings in xaml/wpf?

  When globalizing a wpf application with static resx classes, it's very easy to miss the odd label or button that has its Content property set to a hard coded string in a particular language, ie English. These should of course be moved off to a {x:Static ...} so they can be localised for each culture. Are there any tools which can spot this and warn you? Built in to VS would be ideal, but I'm thinking that 'style cop' type build tools would do the job as well.

• How does the VS XAML designer know what to auto-populate certain values with?

  <Button Name="MyButton" Content="Test" FontStyle="Italic" /> In the above XAML definition of a button, the FontStyle property is set to Italic. The designer is somehow able to populate a list for me to choose from when I hit the = sign. How is this achieved? Before you answer, consider that the FontStyle property is, appropriately enough, of type FontStyle (which is a struct). It's not an enumeration, which would be trivial for VS to list out at design time, so how are the valid list of options chosen to be displayed? There is also a completely separate FontStyles class which contains three static fields, Italic, Normal, and Oblique which just so happen to be the three items VS provides in the drop down list. Is there some mapping going on behind the scenes between the FontStyle struct and FontStyles class, because I've looked in many places in both the object browser and in .NET Reflector and couldn't determine anything from either. • How to change position of inherited items in an Inherited user control

  I have used a user control as a base class (let's call it BaseUC) with 3 labels (in 3 lines) on it (they are set as protected). And there is another user control that inherits from it (InheritedUC). I have added two more labels in InheritedUC, which are positioned between the base's labels (so there are 5 lines). Everything is fine is Visiual Studio's design UI view. But when I run the application, labels on BaseUC overlap with the ones in InheritedUC and I can't see the ones on the inherited control. Any ideas to fix this? Thank you very much

  Hi, I would like to ask for a recommendation on offline form format which user can bring around. Once done, they will upload the file to the server and data will be extracted from there. • non-english VS2008 + Resharper 4.5 = problems

  I have russian version of VS2008 (don't aske me why..) + R# 4.5. After installing R# these problems appear: Can't select text with "Ctrl+Shift+arrow" (no idea how to fix it) Can't use Resharper shortcut scheme. I have trying to apply R# scheme, rebooting VS - no luck. Seems like Russian VS have something different inside it, not only russian textboxes... Any ideas?

• Mdi Children Changed in .Net

  Hi Is there a simple way of tracking the change of an Mdi's children i.e. when they are created and closed, something like an event OnMdiChildListChanged (I realise this doesn't actually exist). I am also aware that I could have a method within my Mdi that handles the creation of child forms and logs the state of them or even create an Interface that defines that a child form has a "NotifyParent" method that is then called on close of the form, but i was wondering if there was any built in events that i could plumb into? • In forms application, is there any Alternative to MsgBox?

  I like how MsgBox stops all further processing until it's clicked but I don't like how it pops that little msgbox in the middle of the screen, which I then have bring to the front if there is a window covering it. Is there a way to do something like a msgbox but keep it on my Form (which is always in view) so I can go ahead and click a button on the form instead of having to bring the little msgbox window on top of windows that may be covering it. I use the msgbox to inform me that a certain situation has happened, which I manually fix and when I'm done I click the MsgBox to continue processing. It'd be nice to have this button right on the form.

• Is it possible to create custom methods in entity classes in linq to sql

  I have a table Site in SQL with (amongst others) three properties idReviewer1, idReviewer2, idReviewer3. Now I would like to create a methods on the entity class of Site to check if a user is a reviewer: partial class Site { public bool IsReviewer(int idUser) { return idReviewer1 == idUser || idReviewer2 == idUser || idReviewer3 == idUser; } } and I use it like this: return from s in db.Sites where s.IsReviewer(user) select s; However, Linq to SQL doesn't know how to translate this to SQL. I get the following error message: Method 'Boolean IsReviewer(Int32)' has no supported translation to SQL. I'd rather not write this: return from s in db.Sites where idReviewer1 == idUser || idReviewer2 == idUser || idReviewer3 == idUser select s; Is there any way to put this functionality in one place, without resorting to SQL?

• Any way to surround code block with Curly Braces {} in VS2008?

  I always find myself needing to enclose a block of code in curly braces { }, but unfortunately that isn't included in the C# surround code snippets, which seems to be an oversight. I couldn't find anything on building your own surround snippets either (just other kinds of snippets). I am actually running Resharper too, but it doesn't seem to have this functionality either (or I haven't figured how to activate it). We have a coding standard of including even a single line of code after an if or else in curly braces, so if I could just make Resharper do that refactor automatically that would be even better!

  Hi, I've got a fairly specific problem i've been struggling with for a couple of days. I'm using a native C++, one of the methods takes a ptr to a struct containing fixed size char arrays. e.g. struct userData { char data1[10]; char data2[10]; }; method: short AddItem(long id, userData* data); I'm trying to call to call this from Managed VC++ but I need to have an instance of userData I can keep hold of in my managed class. Can anyone help with how to achieve this? Thanks

• Change right-click context menu options in VS2008

  When I right-click in my class library, I get some quick options to create things, like an Item from the popup list (New Item...), a User Control, etc. E.g. Now in my web app project, I'd like to be able to get the User Control listed in the right-click menu just like Component and Class, so I don't have to click New Item... then choose it from there. Is there a way to do this in the configuration? I can't seem to figure it out in VS.

  I have two separate areas in my form. Left side for radio buttons, combo boxes, etc. Right side for tabs and even tabs within tabs. For each tab selected, I'd like to display different controls on the left side for use in that tab. • What are the other new features of C# 4.0, after dynamic and optional parameters?

  So, C# 4.0 came out yesterday. It introduced the much-debated dynamic keyword, named and optional parameters. Smaller improvements were the implicit ref and recognizing of indexed and default properties on COM methods, contra- and co-variance (really a .NET CLR feature, not C# only) and... Is that really it? Are dynamic and optional/named params the only real improvements to C#? Or did I miss something? Not that I'm complaining, but it seems a bit meager after C# 2.0 (generics) and C# 3.0 (lambda, LINQ). Maybe the language just reached actual maturity?

  I'm using Nunit for unit testing, and added another project called "Unit Testing" to my current solution. I referenced Nunit, and changed the Namespace to the same namespace used in the main project. I can't seem to figure out how to get access to all the classes, files, etc in the main project. Is there something I have to do to link two projects?
