• Windows 7 "freezes" (chills?), and then "unfreezes" after about 1 minute.

  Hi, I have an Acer Timeline 1810T netbook (4GB RAM) with Windows 7 x64. About once or twice a day, it "freezes" - the reason I put this in quotation marks is that it does not really freeze, as I you cant move mouse, etc. I can move my mouse and jump between different applications, but I cant use the applications for anything. So I can jump between notepad and Firefox, but I cant browse to a new web page. I have been trying to determine the source of this misery for a while now, and I suspect it has something to do with the hard drive - indirectly if not directly. Here are some screen shots of the resource monitor during a "freeze" and during normal operation: Freeze: http://imgur.com/Gcgq1.jpg Normal operation: imgur.com/mlHaI.jpg As you can see, CPU is fine during freeze, but the disk is going bananas.. Does anyone have an idea of what these reading means, or about the problem in general? There seems to be no specific activity that sets this off - it can be during browsing, or during media playback with nothing else open. The fact that I can see navigate to applications but not use them might suggest a hard drive problem as well? Maybe I can access the stuff that is in RAM, but not anything that would require interaction with the drive.. Very appreciative of any help!

• Mac WLAN 802.11b+g WPA1 connection issues

  Hi, I have a Telewell TW-EA510v4 ADSL modem+WLAN router configured as follows: Mode: 802.11b+g Security Mode: WPA1 Pre-shared Key WPA Algorithms: TKIP Connections from only certain MAC addresses have been allowed and the MAC address of my Mac is in that list. The WLAN works just fine with iPhone and an old Acer laptop. It has worked for about two months or so with my MacBook Pro (year and a half or so old model). Ocassionally i've had minor problems with it, which have required either reboot of ADSL modem or reboot of my Mac. However now, for the last week or so I haven't been able to connect to it at all. This is what is what i get in the console when i try to connect: 5.5.2010 20.54.53 airportd[73731] Apple80211Associate() failed -3924 (Invalid PMK) 5.5.2010 20.54.53 Apple80211 framework[584] airportd MIG failed (Associate Event) = -3924 (Invalid PMK) (port = 104599) 5.5.2010 20.54.53 SystemUIServer[584] Error joining WLAN-M: Invalid password (-3924 Invalid master key) The pre-shared key I use is not incorrect. I'm 100% sure of that. • COMPAQ Tower No Signal to monitor

  Hi there, I have had some troubles with this: I received a compaq tower: Compaq Presario SR1224NX Onboard VGA Windows XP SP2 from a friend. It was given to me on condition i give her the files back. My plan was to turn this into an Ubuntu Server. It booted up no problems even with the ubuntu live disc. After a normal shutdown(not unpluggin the power cord and not doing a hard shutdown with the power button), it would not restart even after SEVERAL attempts. I realized the light next to the power supply would flash very rapidly. I researched and found out it was one of two things: a dead power supply or the cables to the motherboard and to the disks etc. Thus i checked to ensure the cables were fine(and they were). I purchased a Power Supply (this one has 400 watts, the initial had 250) and installed it. The tower now boots. It booted into the live disk and everything. After a normal shutdown, it now restarts but is not sending signal to my monitor. I have tried several monitors in which i assure work perfectly but not with this tower(i recall it did show display after replacing the power supply). The monitors are ACER. This is different than most "no Signal" problems since i am not using an external Video Card, this is onboard VGA. Thanks!

• How can I tell if a replacement display is compatible with my laptop?

  I have an Acer Aspire 4810TZ from 2010 which I truly love - it's a 3 year old notebook that still carries on for about 5 to 6h straight off the battery. I've also invested in it with an SSD and extra RAM and it's fine for my use right now. I'd really rather not just dump it. Now... its screen is dead and I'm looking for replacement parts, but it turns out to be a kind of expensive display - AUO B140XW02 14" LED. US$ 125 was the cheapest I found here (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The official dealer sells them for US$ 175. I'm aware of How do I know if a LCD is compatible with my Laptop? and Can I replace a laptop screen with one of a different resolution? but the answers don't really help me in this case. Also Replacing an LCD screen in a laptop gives me a hint but I'm completely dumb at hardware so this is why i'm asking: Is it possible to buy an LCD or a lower grade LED screen with the same connectors? What characteristics should I look for to find out if a certain display is compatible?

• My Linux desktop sees my HDMI-connected monitor, but my monitor says "No signal"

  I have a Gigabyte H55M-UD2H motherboard and an Acer S271HL monitor. When I connect the monitor to the motherboard via VGA, signal works perfectly. When I connect the monitor via HDMI, the system "sees" the connection, but the monitor receives no signal (the monitor shows a blue box which reads "No Signal" and then the monitor goes into power-saving state). • Netbook thinks it is a desktop

  Question: Are, and if so what, there packages for download that I can get netbook to understand it is not a desktop and that it is a netbook. Info: I'm running an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu desktop 9.10. I tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix first but it has graphics issues with the aspire one. So I changed to Ubuntu Desktop. It was the only distro (after debian, centOS, Fedora, and Knoppix all failed me) that I managed to get working. The only thing is that it is having issues doing things that a netbook/laptop should be doing. most notably is that it will run it's battery dead if I close the screen and throw it into my back pack. It seems to just stay fully on and runs it's self to death. also it will lock up some times if I close the screen and come back to it 10 or 20 minutes later. It also won't retain volume settings when I reboot, as well as screen brightness. and just a couple of other things that I can't quite put my finger on, but just seem amiss. like I said, Essentially my netbook thinks it is a desktop, how can I fix this? ~N

  I have an Acer Aspire One with an SSD for storage. I recently installed Ubuntu on it and chose ext4 for my filesystem. Then I read that journaling on an SSD isn't the best idea, so I will try to disable journaling and I have found these intstructions (from http://fenidik.blogspot.com/2010/03/ext4-disable-journal.html): # Create ext4 fs on /dev/sda10 disk mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda10 # Enable writeback mode. This mode will typically provide the best ext4 performance. tune2fs -o journal_data_writeback /dev/sda10 # Delete has_journal option tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/sda10 # Required fsck e2fsck -f /dev/sda10 # Check fs options dumpe2fs /dev/sda10 |more For more performance add fstab opions: data=writeback,noatime,nodiratime i.e: /dev/sda10 /opt ext4 defaults,data=writeback,noatime,nodiratime 0 0 I will use them on my boot partition. Are there any particularly bad parts here, or are there any missing steps? Will my boot partition be fit for being on an SSD after this? • /dev/input/uinput Device appears to be 'broken'

  I'm trying to setup Pystromo so that I can remap the keys on my Belkin N52TE gamepad. Pystromo basically captures the key strokes and then outputs the remapped keystrokes to the uinput device. However, at the moment it simply swallows the input and outputs absolutely nothing. I've tracked the issue to something being wrong with my uinput device, with the smoking gun being: # ls -l /dev/input/uinput crw-rw---- 1 root plugdev 10, 223 Dec 31 2009 /dev/input/uinput # cat /dev/input/uinput cat: /dev/input/uinput: No such device The uinput module is loaded, and can be clearly seen via lsmod. Anyone seen this before, or can think of something worth attempting? • Ubuntu NBR karmic boot freezes at fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16

  I have a netbook (emachine e250 - equivalent to an acer aspire one) and I have Ubunutu NBR 9.10 installed on it. Every other cold boot freezes at the following error message: fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 There is no disk activity, no activity what so ever. I have left the machine sit for over an hour and nothing. It takes a couple of hard resets to be able to boot properly. Once it boots everything works great (wireless, suspend/resume, etc.)! I have spent the last couple of weeks researching the problem and the only thing that seems to work is setting nolapic in the boot string in grub - it boots every time. Unfortunately, nolapic disables the second core and causes problems with suspend resume. At first I thought it was an fsck problem with the first partition on the hard disk as it is a hidden ntfs partition containing the windows xp recover information. So in /etc/fstab I set the partition so that it would be ignored by fsck. This didn't seem to do anything. I have these partitions: /dev/sda1 - an ntfs recovery partition /dev/sda2 - /boot /dev/sda3 - swap /dev/sda5 - / /dev/sda6 - /home I am running kernel version 2.6.31-19-generic and have all the patches (as indicated by update manager). I also have no splash screen so I can see the boot progress. I have only been using NBR since January, I have been using Ubuntu on my desktop since last June (2009-06). What logs should I be looking at? Is there a log for failed boots?

• linux keeps disconnecting from wireless network

  I'm running Arch Linux on an Acer laptop and my wirless connection doesn't stay up. After a while it disconnects, and when I try to reconnect I get stuck with a "Waiting for authorization" message. I have to retry several times before getting the connection stay up for few minutes. This happens with both networkmanager and wicd. The strange thing is that the iMac that sits next to the laptop connects fine, and when I use my laptop within the university wireless network it works normally. How can I solve this problem? EDIT: I've tried to connect manually following the steps iwlist wlan0 scan wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf dhcpcd wlan0 and it works, I can ping google. However, looking to wpa supplicant output I see that it keeps connecting and disconnecting. I'm using WPA2, and this seems to be a problem in authentication. • Wireless very slow on one laptop on network, all other machines normal?

  My new laptop (Acer Aspire Timeine 3810TZ running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) is acting very strange on my wireless network. Below are the issues I'm noticing... The connection frequently drops. I see the icon change from 'full bars' to 'empty bars with yellow star (meaning no connection)' occasionally. Almost every website I visit (Firefox) hangs for a long time on 'Looking up www.amazon.com' for example. After a long pause, it finally starts loading the website. Neither of these problems exist on any other machines on my network. I also have a desktop running the same OS wirelessly and it works fine. I've run several Speedtest.net tests and the speeds are great (20MBit down/4 up). Results from pingtest.net are as follows: Line quality: D Ping: 46ms Jitter: 65ms Packet Loss: 9% These results are to a server that is less than 10 miles from my residence. The results on the other machines in my house are normal. Any suggestions? This is becoming very annoying as I purchased this machine primarily for browsing.

• Windows 7 hangs after going into sleep a second time

  I've searched everywhere around Google and can't figure out why this is happening so I decide to ask here to see if anyone has a problem like this. Like it says in the title, whenever I sleep ONCE I'm able to wake the system, but going back to sleep again AFTER waking up for the first time results in it hanging on no input and no output, with the fan spinning as fast as possible and alot of heat being spewed out by the fan as well. I've tried various things like setting all USB Hub Root's to not get switched off for power saving, disabling USB selective suspend, disabling PCI-e link state power management, and even unplugging ALL USB devices and it wont wake up after the second attempt. And I've even waited up to a full hour of the CPU fan spinning loudly and it's still stuck trying to wake up. The only USB devices I use are a Microsoft USB Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 (IntelliType Pro) and a generic HID compliant mouse from Creative model number OMC90S "CREATIVE MOUSE OPTICAL LITE". My other devices like external drives and controllers are unplugged when I'm not using them as having too many USB devices plugged in at a time causes a deadlock on almost all of the ports I have. Here's my system specifications (Most of these are from CPU-Z): Brand: Gateway DX4300-19 Mainboard: Gateway RS780 Chipset: AMD 780G Rev 00 Southbridge: AMD SB700 Rev 00 LPCIO: ITE IT8718 BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. ver P01-A4 09/15/2009 CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 810 at 2.60 GHz RAM: 8.0 GB DDR2 Dual Channel Ganged Mode at 400 MHz GPU: ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics Intergrated - RS780 OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM (Acer Group) HDD: WDC WD10EADS-22M2B0 1.0 TB (Western Digital Green Caviar) My BIOS has absolutely no control over how I setup the sleep mode to be either S1 or S3. So I can't check these settings or even change them. Hybrid sleep is also disabled, I can successfully go into hibernation and wake from hibernation but this is painfully slow due to a harddrive problem I'm having with this "Green Drive". (Hibernation takes over ~3 minutes to complete) Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

• Laptop shuts down randomly without warning

  My Asus Zenbook UX32V turns off randomly when I'm working on it. This happens both when the computer is recently turned on (5 minutes), and after being on for several days. I'm not running any heavy software The laptop is not heating The fan is not working on the maximum capacity (it's not heating) It happens when the laptop is lying still on the table It is no warning, it simply goes black It happens both when charging and on battery My guess is that it suddenly lose power somehow. What puzzles me is that I can flip the laptop upside down, sideways, shake it, etc. without it shutting off. This makes me think it's not something that's loose causing occasional short-circuits. I realize that the laptop probably doesn't like flipping and shaking, but it was the best way I could troubleshoot. I rarely turn the computer off, only have it in hibernate or sleep mode (most often hibernate). I've never experienced that the laptop is off when I wake it up from sleep mode. I've had the problem for a few months and it happens 2-8 times a week. Specs: Asus Zenbook UX32V Windows 8.1 (it happened in Windows 8.0 too) Intel i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz The laptop is approx 1.5 years, but it has a small dent on one of the sides that probably voids the warranty. The dent has been there since week one and I don't think it's related to the problems I'm having now. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this, and how it might be fixed? I've read all other questions (some of which are listed below) that seem related to my issue, but none report the same behavior as I'm experiencing. • Nvidia: force 1920x1080 as an option

  Proprietary Nvidia (290) on gentoo here. I'm running Nvidia TwinView with two 1680x1050 monitors here. Now I want to hotplug between HDTV and one of the monitors. Almost good, but since Nvidia reads the EDID information of the monitors and sees the maximum resolution of 1680x1050, it won't allow 1920x1080. "Detect displays" of nvidia-settings doesn't do anything. My only option this far is to restart X, but this is highly unpreferable. I already discovered that something towards my liking can be done with MetaModes, but it doesn't allow larger resolutions either. I guess I have to drop the EDID information and specify modes manually. However, TwinView hasn't liked my offerings thus far. • Ubuntu network card problem.

  Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, it works fine under Windows Vista. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System.

• Windows freezes when watching videos

  I have Acer laptop Aspire 5740 - 5780 with windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I am using Chrome. Windows is 1 year old, but it's not the first time this has happened. Windows freezes whenever I am watching videos on facebook/youtube or when using SopCast. I thought there was some faulty plugin, so I recently re-installed chrome but it happened again. No keys work, and the sound of whatever I am listening starts repeating like grrrr..drrrr. Its seems like the sound in very slow motion. One time I left it in this freeze state for 5 min and it recovered automatically. It usually does not happen when I am using windows media player. I had some codecs installed but I removed them to see if that fixes. So far, I have narrowed it down to youtube/footytube videos and sopcast. I have checked event logs but nothing special. Is there any way I can narrow down the problem or any suggestions on how to fix it. I'd like to add that it does not always happen. Sometimes windows goes days/weeks without freezing, and sometimes it take a min into video to freeze.

• Hardware issue, bsod with windows xp irq and strange messages with ubuntu

  I have an old Acer T160 and it used to run Windows XP. But I keep getting random BSOD's. I keep seeing IRQ conflicts. I tried to run ubuntu, which runs and keeps running. But sometimes is not responding. Also there are these popups at ubuntu 12.04 that my network cable (which is onboard) is unplugged. But I have no cable in it! and have an usb dongle for wifi. which also seems unstable. have to (auto)reconnect sometimes. So my question is: is it my mobo, power supply or something else? FYI: I had an dvd-rw station which did not open properly, so unplugged the ata and power, als removed the second harddrive. now only have sata harddrive. also removed the extra video card (ati sapphire x1600 pro) so use only onboard video now and still have these issues. EDIT Update: will try with a new PSU (power supply unit of 400watt) the old (factory) one was 300watt. and will use a usb drive which has 12.04 ubuntu on it (made with unetbootin) to format everything and re-install ubuntu. (so also delete mbr partition) will update the day after tomorrow.

• Windows 7: Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently - only returns after "Troubleshoot connection" resets the adapter

  On our laptop (running Windows 7) the Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently. Symptoms: Connectivity is suddenly lost, and the "signal strenght" indicator in the tray shows zero strength and a yellow "star" symbol. What happens then: The problem does not resolve itself by just waiting. If I click on the tray icon, the "Windows network diagnostics" wizard pops up and tells me that there is a networking problem (duh). If I click on the "repair" button (not sure about the wording), the wizard works for a while, then reports that it has reset the network adapter. Then Wi-Fi works again. While the above procedure has worked every time so far, it is very annoying. It takes 10-20s to repair the connection, and in the meantime downloads, video streams etc. may have been aborted. Some more details: The problem occurs without any apparent regularity, but usually a few minutes after powerup (though not every time). It happens frequently enough to be annoying. It is unlikely to be a router problem - another laptop running at the same time usually has no Wi-Fi problems. I am at a loss about what to try to troubleshoot this. Any ideas? • Synergy Windows 7 Screen Saver issue

  I have synergy server running on a Windows 7 laptop, I have another laptop running windows XP as the Client. When synergy is first started the Screen Saver will start after the 5 mins of inactivity no problem but after mouse/keyboard input then waiting another 5 minutes + the screen saver will not come back on. The mouse is on the server NOT the client. I have tried unchecking "sync screen savers" I have tried right clicking and running the synergy server as administrator. I have tried versions 1.3.4, 1.3.6, 1.4.2 both 32 bit and 64 bit. I have tried running in XP compatibility mode. I have tried disconnecting the client. It feels like I've tried everything. The setup is as follows: The server is below the Client, the client is above the server. The server has a secondary monitor attached to it and yes I've tried running without the secondary monitor. the sever is an acer 5552G-5828. Any help would be awesome! I love synergy but without the screensavers it is annoying. Thanks!

• realtek lan driver problem - win 7

  Hi, my new notebook (ACER TM 8371) with Win 7(x32) professional as OS, has strage behaviour with respect to LAN. when I plug or unplug my charger cable, or my notebook goes in stad-by, or just a do nothing, the netwrok connection is lost. • Task scheduled to wake laptop - only works when lid is open

  I am running Windows 7 Starter on an Acer Aspire One laptop. I want my laptop to automatically run a task (backup the HDD to a network drive) once a week in the middle of the night. I scheduled the task in "Task Scheduler" and checked the box to wake the computer to run the task. I also changed the advanced power settings to allow wake timers. This was half of the solution. It now works flawlessly when the lid is open... the computer can wake itself up from either sleep or hibernate mode to perform the backup. When the lid is closed however, its sleeping beauty. Any ideas? I don't want to have to remember to open the lid once a week. It sort of defeats the purpose of an "automatic" backup. Update: I discovered that it can wake from sleep (or hybrid sleep), but not from hibernate when the lid is closed. This is good news. I'd still be curious about how to get it to work from hibernate, but I'm pretty happy about waking from sleep at least.
