  I have googled but I can't find answers for these questions. Your advice is appreciated. centOS on vps with 512MB RAM, nginx, php5 (fastcgi), mysql5 (myisam, not innodb). I need to optimize this app created by some ex-employee. This app is working, but it's slow. Table: t1(id[bigint(20)],c1[mediumtext],c2[mediumtext],c3[mediumtext],c4[mediumtext]) id is some random big number, and is PK Those mediumtext rows look like this: c1="|box-002877|" c2="|ct-2348|rd-11124854|hw-3949|wd-8872|hw-119037736|...etc.. " c3="|fg-2448|wd-11172|hw-1656|...etc.. " c4="|hg-2448|qd-16667|...etc." (some columns contain a lot of data, around 900 KiB, database around 300 MiB) Yes, mediumtext "is bad", and (20) is too big... but I didn't create this. Those codes can be found on any of those 4 mediumtext's... //he needs all the columns of the row containing $code, so he wrote this: function f1($code) { SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE c1 LIKE '%$code%' OR c2 LIKE '%$code%' OR c3 LIKE '%$code%' OR c4 LIKE '%$code%'; Questions: Q1. Mysql is working with this table on disk (not RAM) because of the mediumtext, right? is this the primary cause of slowness? Q3. That query can be cached by mysql (if using a big query_cache_size=128M value on the my.cnf)? or that's not cacheable due to the mediumtexts, or due to the "OR LIKE"...? Q4. Do you recommend rewriting this with mysql's INSTR() / LOCATE() / MATCH..AGAINST [FULLTEXT]?

• Out Of Memory error while executing mysqldump

  Hi, I am getting the following error when trying to backup a database using mysqldump from the command prompt. C:\Documents and Settings\bobC:\Adobe\LiveCycle8.2\mysql\bin\mysqldump --quick --add-locks --lock-tables -c --default-character-set=utf8 --skip-opt -pxxxx -u adobe -r C:\Adobe\LiveCycle8.2\configurationManager\working\upgrade\mysql\adobe. sql -B adobe --port=3306 --host=localhost mysqldump: Out of memory (Needed 10380928 bytes) mysqldump: Got error: 2008: MySQL client ran out of memory when retrieving data from server As you can see i am using the --quick and --skip-opt too; cannot figure out what is causing the issue. The server log has the following messages 100420 15:16:39 InnoDB: Error: cannot allocate 4814100 bytes of memory for InnoDB: a BLOB with malloc! Total allocated memory InnoDB: by InnoDB 33427880 bytes. Operating system errno: 2 InnoDB: Check if you should increase the swap file or InnoDB: ulimits of your operating system. InnoDB: On FreeBSD check you have compiled the OS with InnoDB: a big enough maximum process size. 100420 15:16:40 InnoDB: Warning: could not allocate 3814100 + 1000000 bytes to retrieve InnoDB: a big column. Table name adobe/tb_form_data Any help on this regard is highly appreciated P.S: The backup works fine without any issues when i use the MYSQL Administrator, but since an external app( adobe livecycle installer) uses the above command to backup the database during install, i need to get this working.   I am using QSqlQuery to insert data into a MySQL database. Currently all I care about is getting this to work with MySQL, but ideally I'd like to keep this as platform-independent as possible. What I'm after, in the context of MySQL, is to end up with code that effectively executes something like the following query: UPDATE table SET time_field=CURRENT_TIMESTAMP() WHERE id='5' The following code is what I have attempted, but it fails: QSqlQuery query; query.prepare("INSERT INTO table SET time_field=? WHERE id=?"); query.addBindValue("CURRENT_TIMESTAMP()"); query.addBindValue(5); query.exec(); The error I get is: Incorrect datetime value: 'CURRENT_TIMESTAMP()' for column 'time_field' at row 1 QMYSQL3: Unable to execute statement. I am not surprised as I assume Qt is doing some type checking when it binds values. I have dug through the Qt documentation as well as I know how, but I can't find anything in the API designed specifically for supporting MySQL's CURRENT_TIMESTAMP() function, or that of any other DBMS. Any suggestions?

• Can one connection get details of another? Or, how can I get the most detailed pending transaction

  Is there a Mysql statement which provides full details of any other open connection or user? For this particular case, on myisam tables specifically. Looking at Mysql's SHOW TABLE STATUS documentation, it's missing some very important information for my purpose. For example: remote odbc connection one is inserting several thousand records, which due to a slow connection speed can take up to an hour. Tcp connection two, using PHP on the server's localhost, is running select queries with aggregate functions on that data. Before allowing connection two to run those queries, I'd like connection two to first check to make sure there's no pending inserts on any other connection on those specific tables so it can instead wait until all data is available. If the table is currently being written to, I'd like to spit back to the user of connection two an approximation of how much longer to wait based on the number of pending inserts. Ideally by table, I'd like to get back using a query the timestamp when connection one began the write, total inserts left to be done, and total inserts already completed. Instead of insert counts, even knowing number of bytes written and left to write would work just fine here. Obviously since connection two is a tcp connection via a PHP script, all I can really use in that script is some sort of query. I suppose if I have to, since it is on localhost, I can exec() it if the only way is by a mysql command line option that outputs this info, but I'd rather not. I suppose I could simply update a custom-made transaction log before and after this massive insert task which the PHP script can check, but hopefully there's already a built-in Mysql feature I can take advantage of.

  I'm going to start a new project which is going to be small initially but may grow to big over the years. I'm strongly convinced that I'm going to use ASP.NET MVC with jQuery for UI. I want to go for MySQL as database for some reasons but worried on few things. I've a good years of experience working on SQL Server databases and on one project I've had a bad experience creating and managing stored procedures on MySQL database. I'm totally new to Linq but I see that it is easier to use once you are familiar with it. First thing is that accessing data should be easy. So I thought I should use MySQL to Linq but somewhere I read that it is not directly supported but MySQL .NET connector adds support for EntityFramework. I don't know what are the pros and cons of it. I would love if I can implement repository pattern. Will it be possible if I use Entity Framework? I'm not clear on how I should go about all this or I should just forget every thing and directly use SQL to Linq on SQL Server. I'm also concerned about the performance. Someone told me that if we use Entity framework it fetches lot of data and then filter it. Is that right?

• PDO closeCursor Error

  Hey Everyone, I currently have a database layer that I wrote myself and I have been using it now for over a year without any problems. The database class uses PDO, and there are two different databases that I regularly connect to (MySQL and MS SQL). The MS SQL database is used for Accpac accounting storage, and the MySQL database is used for everything else. In one of the MySQL databases I have all of the dsn's listed which I use to create the string I need to connect to the MS SQL databases. I have a new program I am trying to write which I am taking employee data from one of the MySQL databases, and using the employee ID to get the employee's information from the MS SQL database. For some reason, whenever I run the program it will get through about 1200 records (out of 11k) and then crash with an error like the following, Fatal error: Call to a member function closeCursor() on a non-object I have tried moving the loops around in many different ways, and I have tried manually closing the connections by setting the database handle to null. Nothing I do seems to work. Thanks for any help! Metropolis

• Having trouble with php and ajax search function

  I am still quite new to php/ajax/mysql. In anycase, I'm creating a search function which is returning properly the data I'm looking for. In brief, I have a mysql database set up. A php website that has a search function. I'm now trying to add a link to a mysql database search rather than just showing the results. In my search.php, the echo line is working fine but the $string .= is not returning anything. I'm just trying to get the same as the echo but with the link to the mysql php record.   look at this table please table |id| |name| |order| i must get the rows, where name = something and order = somevalue so i write select `id` from `table` where `name` = 'something' and `order` = 'somevalue' but depend on php logic, sometimes i need to get all rows, where name = somethimg, independently of order value. i don't want to change the query structure, because in practise there are many number of fields, and possible count of queries will became very big. so i want to save the structure of query, and when i need to select just by name, i want to write something like this select `id` from `table` where `name` = 'something' and `order` = any value is it possible? maybe the question is incomprehensible, at least i tried;) sorry for bad english thanks

  When I try and use a populator or sphinx on a Ruby app I keep receiving dyld errors. I used to use MAMP on OS X Leopard but since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard and am now using standalone MySQL (10.5 64-bit). $ rake ts:index Would return dyld: Library not loaded: /Applications/MAMP/Library/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.15.dylib Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/indexer Reason: image not found rake aborted! Even though to remove MAMP I just deleted the /Applications/MAMP directory. But it still looks like dylib has references to it. I've tried running: $ sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -verify and restarting but the problem still persists. OS X 10.6.1, MySQL 5.0.85 (x86_64)

But the program gets an unhandled exception error when the computer where its running does not have a wampserver. The only thing that is installed in it is the mysql connector net. How do I make it work. I just want the two programs to access the same mysql database. I already opened port 20 by configuring firewall. Both in TCP and UDP. What do I do? Do I have to tweak the codes?

  Ok I'm very new to databases and C# in general, but I'm using a piece of code that exports dataset data to an Excel file, and its taking issue with the date/time format. I'm using the MySQL connector so the rowtype is MySql.Data.Types.MySqlDateTime. Is there any quick way to convert it into System.DateTime so I can slot it straight into the case statement? • Can't get access to PHPmyAdmin after setting a root password and using Instant Rails

  Wanted to get started with Ruby on Rails so I installed instant rails and set up a mysql password. Problem is now I can't get access to phpmyadmin. From the rails control panel, when I go to configure database (via PhpMyadmin) it opens up phpmyadmin with the message Error MySQL said: Documentation #1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) When I used to use XAMPP after setting a password instead of taking me directly within phpmyadmin (as it did without a password) it took me to the login screen instead. With instant rails that's not the case. Anyone had this problem when they first set a mysql password and using the instant rails package?

So far I've worked locally and all worked fine, until i realized I'll have to use my program in a network where all access goes through a proxy. Does anyone now how I can set the connections managed by that lib to use a proxy? Alternatively: do you know of another Python lib for MySQL that can handle this? I also have no idea if the if the proxy server will allow access to the standard MySQL port or how I can trick it to allow it. Help on this is also welcomed.

  hi guys, suppose i have one column in mysql database which is stated last time one equipment is up in h:i:s format (ex: 00:05:11) or 1d21h, means that the equipment is on since 5 min before, what is the best method i can convert this to unix timestamp, say if using php script how? or direct convert last unix timestamp using mysql function query. actually, i want to calculate for start time for this equipment uptime in unix timestamp where i have one column in mysql startcapture that will be deducted with last column to get start time. so starttime = startcapture - last (this last time that has to convert to unix timestamp based on now() - h:i:s ). but the problem is sometimes the format change from h:i:s to ex: 1d22h, if h:i:s means the equipment is up since ex: 00:05:11 min before and if 1d22h means the equipment already up 1 day 22 hours before. so the main things here is to convert last column to appropriate unix timestamp. please help guys, asap.

• ALTER TABLE without locking the table?

  When doing an ALTER TABLE statement in MySQL, the whole table is read-locked for the duration of the statement. If it's a big table, that means insert or update statements could be locked for a looooong time. Is there a way to do a "hot alter", like adding a column in such a way that the table is still updatable throughout the process? Mostly I'm interested in a solution for MySQL but I'd be interested in other RDBMS if MySQL can't do it. To clarify, my purpose is simply to avoid downtime when a new feature that requires an extra table column is pushed to production. Any database schema will change over time, that's just a fact of life. I don't see why we should accept that these changes must inevitably result in downtime; that's just weak.
