• Wifi will not connect with an Intel Wifi Link 1000

  I have an HP dv7t-6100CTO laptop. I have linux ubuntu 12.04 lts dual booted. The specs of my laptop are: - i7-2620m dual core (2.7 ghz) processor - intel wifi link 1000 bgn wireless card I am having a hard time getting my laptop to connect to the internet through wireless. Ethernet is fine, but at college I need wireless the majority of the time. Can anyone help? Some steps I have done: I have tried WICD while uninstalling the Network Manager. When that didn't work, I uninstalled WICD and reinstalled Network Manager. I an not really sure what else to do.

  I have just installed Xubuntu 12.04.2. • Why did object-oriented paradigms take so long to go mainstream?

  I read this question and it got me thinking about another fairly recent thing. Object oriented languages. I'm not sure when the first one was created, but why did it take so long before they became mainstream? C became vastly popular, but didn't become the object-oriented C++ for years(decades?) later No mainstream language before the 90s was object oriented Object oriented really seemed to take off with Java and C++ around the same time Now, my question, why did this take so long? Why wasn't C originally conceived as an object-oriented language? Taking a very small subset of C++ wouldn't have affected the core language a whole lot, so why was this idea not popular until the 90s?

• Ubuntu 12.10 - Windows 8 Dual Boot (Tried boot-repair) - Dual OS option not showing

  as title says, this is my first time trying ubuntu. I have been trying since last week with continuous googling and searching, but still no luck. I had win8 x64 installed before, then tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 desktop (dual OS option) I tried like 10 times already, everytime it's showing installation complete, but when i restarted and boot from my HDD, dual boot option is not showing, directly to win8 startup I installed win8 on C before. I had a 104gb free drive to install linux to (it's installed already.. but the dual boot option is now showing) In case it helps, Laptop Model : Acer Aspire 4752 Intel Core i3, 2.30GHz Ram 4GB 64 Bit OS - Windows 8 Pro with Media Center This is the url i got from the boot-repair http://paste.ubuntu.com/1407018/ (it's not win vista, thou it seems showing so in the link) Thanks a lot.. • RT3290 Bluetooth not pairing in Ubuntu 14.04

  I recently followed the instructions listed in the following link to get my RT3290 bluetooth working on my laptop. These instructions have yielded the most progress I have had in the year I have had this laptop. My machine now sees my bluetooth, I can scan for and see devices, and other devices and see my laptop, but pairing continually fails. • OSB/OSR/OER in One Domain - QName violates loader constraints

  For demos, testing and prototyping, I wanted a single domain which contained three servers:OSB - Oracle Service BusOSR - Oracle Service RegistryOER - Oracle Enterprise Repository These three can work together to help with service governance in an enterprise.  When building out the domain, I found errors in the OSR server due to some conflicting classes from the OSB.  This wouldn't be an issue if each server was given a unique classpath setting with the node manager, but I was having the node manager use the standard startup scripts. • CPU fan kicks in to full gear when i try to install ubuntu 12.10 or LTS

  Whenever I try to install (DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS 7) both versions of Ubuntu desktop on my PC the CPU fan starts spinning so fast that I couldn't even go through the installation for fear of my CPU exploding. In windows 7, the temp reaches 25-30 idle and 30-45 under full load. I tried installing through Wubi and by burning it to USB drive. Both wield the same results. I would appreciate any help. • Internet doesn't work by default

  After upgrading to Precise, I am required to run 'sudo dhclient eth0' in a terminal in order to get the internet to work. Everything worked perfectly fine on Oneiric, so It's really puzzling me.   Unity 3D was working just fine till we had a blackout in the area (I have not yet bought a UPS :(). I tried the solutions here, but it does not help.   I am having overheating issues when watching flash videos. Here is all the relevant information that I could think of. Please help. --Often when playing flash videos it operates at 95 degrees C. --Only gets that hot when on full screen (but still in the 80s otherwise) --Sometimes reaches 100 degrees and shuts down. --fan runs at around 4500 RPM when hot (not to mention I can here it speed up) --Happens under Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 (did not use Ubuntu before then) --Overheating happens on more than one site (for example youtube and Comedy Central) --My computer does not overheat otherwise. --Usually runs around 50-60 degrees C. --Maybe if compiling or doing updates can it get to 70 or 75 degree C. --Have a dual boot, and under Windows I do not have this issue. --I use firefox, but have the same issue if using Chrome --I have a Lenovo T410, currently running Ubuntu 12.10 --Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz × 4 --4 GB of memory, 64 bit OS --Graphics: NVS 3100M/PCIe/SSE2 Thanks and let me know if you need more info, Ben

  I get confused when people try to make a distinction between compiled languages and managed languages. From experience, I understand that most consider compiled languages to be C,C++ while managed languages are Java,C# (There are obviously more, but these are just few examples). But what exactly is the core difference between the two types of languages? My understanding is that any program, regardless of what language you use is essentially "compiled" into a low-level machine code which is then interpreted, so does that kinda make managed languages a subset of compiled languages (That is, all managed languages are compiled languages but not the other way around)?

  Error occurs during startup of Ubuntu Installation. Sometimes I'll get to the Welcome screen just like this, the screen will just glitch out, or will simply freeze during the loading icon. nvidia GTS 250 Intel Core i7 920 9 GB Memory I was able to install 12.04.1, but after performing upgrade to 12.10 it get the same problem on startup; glitches in graphics, missing content etc. Also noticed after the upgrade, I'm no longer able to connect to internet; neither ethernet or wifi.

• Which GPU with my CPU for 1080p flash?

  Based on the following site: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/ I need the following minimum spec to play 1080p flash video via a browser: CPU: 1.8GHz Intel Core Duo, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+, or faster processor RAM: 512MB of RAM GPU: 64MB of graphics memory I only have a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 process which is no where near as good as the processor listed above. I don't want to upgrade my processor as I think it will mean I have to change the motherboard etc. So, my question is, what is the cheapest PCI-E GPU I can buy which will allow me to play smooth 1080p flash video via a browser. I think the cheapest I can get is the 8400GS, but am not sure if that will be able to handle 1080p with the processor I have. I have looked at the GT520 and was wondering if this is the cheapest GPU which I need, or if there is something cheaper which will do 1080p with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4. Or, will I have to get something better than a GT520?

• "Build your own website" - Developing a CMS with Vague Requirements on a Tight Deadline

  I'm a Java developer in charge of making a product which allows clients to "build their own site". I've spent a lot of time looking into Liferay, as I don't have any experience in building CMSs, and want to either use it, or get ideas of how to build a decent system. The time line is short, requirements are vague, yada yada Is Liferay a good technology to work with when showing the client (who may be very low on computer expertise) a user interface to build a site? The thing is, I want the power and flexibility to avoid the learning curve in building a CMS like product, but I don't want to waste time learning a new technology only to find its over-kill, or can't do the simple - but uncommon and unimplemented - things that we are asked to add as features Ideally I'd like to provide multiple web interfaces to the core API to build the sites - one that is very powerful, and another that is watered down and easy to use.

• Create a Social Community of Trust Along With Your Federal Digital Services Governance

  The Digital Services Governance Recommendations were recently released, supporting the US Federal Government's Digital Government Strategy Milestone Action #4.2 to establish agency-wide governance structures for developing and delivering digital services. Figure 1 - From: "Digital Services Governance Recommendations" While extremely important from a policy and procedure perspective within an Agency's information management and communications enterprise, these recommendations only very lightly reference perhaps the most important success enabler - the "Trusted Community" required for ultimate usefulness of the services delivered. By "ultimate usefulness", I mean the collection of public, transparent properties around government information and digital services that include social trust and validation, social reach, expert respect, and comparative, standard measures of relative value. In other words, do the digital services meet expectations of the public, social media ecosystem (people AND machines)? A rigid governance framework, controlling by rules, policies and roles the creation and dissemination of digital services may meet the expectations of direct end-users and most stakeholders - including the agency information stewards and security officers. All others who may share comments about the services, write about them, swap or review extracts, repackage, visualize or otherwise repurpose the output for use in entirely unanticipated, social ways - these "stakeholders" will not be governed, but may observe guidance generated by a "Trusted Community". As recognized members of the trusted community, these stakeholders may ultimately define the right scope and detail of governance that all other users might observe, promoting and refining the usefulness of the government product as the social ecosystem expects. So, as part of an agency-centric governance framework, it's advised that a flexible governance model be created for stewarding a "Community of Trust" around the digital services. The first steps follow the approach outlined in the Recommendations: Step 1: Gather a Core Team In addition to the roles and responsibilities described, perhaps a set of characteristics and responsibilities can be developed for the "Trusted Community Steward/Advocate" - i.e. a person or team who (a) are entirely cognizant of and respected within the external social media communities, and (b) are trusted both within the agency and outside as practical, responsible, non-partisan communicators of useful information. The may seem like a standard Agency PR/Outreach team role - but often an agency or stakeholder subject matter expert with a public, active social persona works even better. Step 2: Assess What You Have In addition to existing, agency or stakeholder decision-making bodies and assets, it's important to take a PR/Marketing view of the social ecosystem. How visible are the services across the social channels utilized by current or desired constituents of your agency? What's the online reputation of your agency and perhaps the service(s)? Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) a facet of external communications/publishing lifecycles? Who are the public champions, instigators, value-adders for the digital services, or perhaps just influential "communicators" (i.e. with no stake in the game)? You're essentially assessing your market and social presence, and identifying the actors (including your own agency employees) in the existing community of trust. Step 3: Determine What You Want The evolving Community of Trust will most readily absorb, support and provide feedback regarding "Core Principles" (Element B of the "six essential elements of a digital services governance structure") shared by your Agency, and obviously play a large, though probably very unstructured part in Element D "Stakeholder Input and Participation". Plan for this, and seek input from the social media community with respect to performance metrics - these should be geared around the outcome and growth of the trusted communities actions. How big and active is this community? What's the influential reach of this community with respect to particular messaging or campaigns generated by the Agency? What's the referral rate TO your digital services, FROM channels owned or operated by members of this community? (this requires governance with respect to content generation inclusive of "markers" or "tags"). At this point, while your Agency proceeds with steps 4 ("Build/Validate the Governance Structure") and 5 ("Share, Review, Upgrade"), the Community of Trust might as well just get going, and start adding value and usefulness to the existing conversations, existing data services - loosely though directionally-stewarded by your trusted advocate(s). Why is this an "Enterprise Architecture" topic? Because it's increasingly apparent that a Public Service "Enterprise" is not wholly contained within Agency facilities, firewalls and job titles - it's also manifested in actual, perceived or representative forms outside the walls, on the social Internet. An Agency's EA model and resulting investments both facilitate and are impacted by the "Social Enterprise". At Oracle, we're very active both within our Enterprise and outside, helping foster social architectures that enable truly useful public services, digital or otherwise.

• higher cpu usage in ubuntu 12.04 than windows 7

  Hi I have a Intel Core i5 with 6GB of Ram using ubuntu 12.04 64bit. I noticed that whenever I run chrome which is the faster browser for me in linux) when I watch youtube, the CPU usage for Chrome is at least 13% and sometimes even 30% . but in Windows 7 same thing (youtube on chrome) rarely uses more than 6% of my CPU usage. I also notice my laptop is so hot in ubuntu 12.04 and the fan is working all the time, while in windows the laptop is so silent and the fan doesnt make much noise all the time and not as warm as in linux. is it like that for every one or is it just me?
