• ServiceRoute + WebServiceHostFactory kills WSDL generation? How to create extensionless WCF service

  I'm trying to use extenionless / .svc-less WCF services. Can anyone else confirm or deny the issue I'm experiencing? I use routing in code, and do this in Application_Start of global.asax.cs: RouteTable.Routes.Add(new ServiceRoute("Data", new WebServiceHostFactory(), typeof(DataDips))); I have tested in both IIS 6 and IIS 7.5 and I can use the service just fine (ie my extensionless handler is correctly configured for ASP.NET). However, metadata generation is totally screwed up. I can hit my /mex endpoint with the WCF Test Client (and I presume svcutil.exe) -- but the ?wsdl generation you typically get with .svc is toast. I can't hit it with a browser (get 400 bad request), I can't hit it with wsdl.exe, etc. Metadata generation is configured correctly in web.config. This is a problem of course, because the service is exposed as basicHttpBinding so that an old style ASMX client can get to it. But of course, the client can't generate the proxy without a WSDL description. If I instead use serviceActivation routing in config like this, rather than registering a route in code: <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true"> <serviceActivations> <add relativeAddress="Data.svc" service="DataDips" /> </serviceActivations> </serviceHostingEnvironment> Then voila... it works. But then I don't have a clean extensionless url. If I change relativeAddress from Data.svc to Data, then I get a configuration exception as this is not supported by config. (Must use an extension registered to WCF). I've also attempted to use this code in conjunction with the above config: RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute("","Data/{*data}","~/Data.svc/{*data}",false); My thinking is that I can just point the extensionless url at the configured .svc url. This doesn't work -- the /Data.svc continues to work, but /Data returns a 404. Anyone with any bright ideas?

• Can I tell Castle Windsor to create a component in a separate AppDomain?

  I've created a multi-threaded service that uses Castle Windsor to create components to run on separate threads. I Resolve an component by name with parameters for each thread. I'm running into concurrency problems with a 3rd party library used by the components. I suspect that isolating those components in separate AppDomains will resolve the problem. • Possible to change the alpha value of certain pixels on iPhone?

  Is it possible to change just a portion of a Sprite's alpha in response to user interaction? A good example of what I mean is iFog or iSteam, where the user can wipe "steam" off the iPhone's screen. Swapping images out wouldn't be feasible due to the sheer number of possibilities where the user could touch and move... For example, say you have a simple app that has a brick wall in the background that has graffiti on it, so there'd be two sprites, one of the brick wall, then one of the graffiti that has a higher z value than the brick wall. Then, based upon where the user touches (assuming their touch controls a sandblaster), some of the graffiti should be removed, but not all of it, which could be accomplished by changing the alpha value on a portion of the graffiti sprite. Is there any way to do this in cocos2d-iphone? Or, do I need to drop down into openGL, and if so, where would be a good place to start my search on how to accomplish this? Ideally, I'd like to accomplish this on a cocos2d-iphone Sprite, but if it's not possible, where's the best place to start looking? Thanks in advance, Ben

My problem is that the c (parent) container reports a height and width value which includes the value underneath the scrollbars. • How to read Unicode characters from command-line arguments in Python on Windows

  I want my Python script to be able to read Unicode command line arguments in Windows. But it appears that sys.argv is a string encoded in some local encoding, rather than Unicode. How can I read the command line in full Unicode? Example code: argv.py import sys first_arg = sys.argv[1] print first_arg print type(first_arg) print first_arg.encode("hex") print open(first_arg) On my PC set up for Japanese code page, I get: C:\temp>argv.py "PC·??????08.09.24.doc" PC·??????08.09.24.doc <type 'str'> 50438145835c83748367905c90bf8f9130382e30392e32342e646f63 <open file 'PC·??????08.09.24.doc', mode 'r' at 0x00917D90> That's Shift-JIS encoded I believe, and it "works" for that filename. But it breaks for filenames with characters that aren't in the Shift-JIS character set—the final "open" call fails: C:\temp>argv.py Jörgen.txt Jorgen.txt <type 'str'> 4a6f7267656e2e747874 Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\temp\argv.py", line 7, in <module> print open(first_arg) IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'Jorgen.txt' Note—I'm talking about Python 2.x, not Python 3.0. I've found that Python 3.0 gives sys.argv as proper Unicode. But it's a bit early yet to transition to Python 3.0 (due to lack of 3rd party library support). Update: A few answers have said I should decode according to whatever the sys.argv is encoded in. The problem with that is that it's not full Unicode, so some characters are not representable. Here's the use case that gives me grief: I have enabled drag-and-drop of files onto .py files in Windows Explorer. I have file names with all sorts of characters, including some not in the system default code page. My Python script doesn't get the right Unicode filenames passed to it via sys.argv in all cases, when the characters aren't representable in the current code page encoding. There is certainly some Windows API to read the command line with full Unicode (and Python 3.0 does it). I assume the Python 2.x interpreter is not using it.

• jQuery draggable + droppable: how to snap dropped element to dropped-on element

  I have my screen divided into two DIVs. In the left DIV I have a few 50x50 pixel DIVs, in the right DIV I have an empty grid made of 80x80 LIs. The DIVs on the left are draggable, and once dropped on a LI, they should snap to center of that LI. Sounds simple, right? I just don't know how to get this done. I tried by manipulating the dropped DIV's top and left CSS properties to match those of the LI they're dropped into, but the left and top properties are relative to the left DIV. How can I best have the dropped element snap to the center of the element it's dropped into? That's gotta be simple, right? Edit: I'm using jQuery UI 1.7.2 with jQuery 1.3.2. Edit 2: For whoever else has this problem, this is how I fixed it: I used Keith's solution of removing the dragged element and placing it inside the dropped-on element in the drop callback of the droppable plugin: function gallerySnap(droppedOn, droppedElement) { $(droppedOn).html('<div class="drop_styles">'+$(droppedElement).html()+'</div>' ); $(droppedElement).remove(); } I don't the dropped element to be draggable again, but if you do, just bind draggable to it again. For me this method also solved the problem I had when positioning the dropped elements (which would be relative to the left DIV) and scrolling inside the second DIV. (Elements would remain fixed on page, now they scroll along). I did play with the snap options to make it look good while dragging, so thanks to karim79 for that suggestion. I probably won't win any Awesome Code prizes with this, so if you see room for improvement, please share!

• How do I keep Visual Studio's Windows Forms Designer from deleting controls?

  With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form. As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on. Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur? One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

When sorting an item I would like a clone of the item I am dragging remain until I stop drop the item in its new position. • Multilingual spellcheck on WPF richtextbox

  I need to turn spellcheck on for a richtextbox, and set the language to one the user has picked from a drop down. For now, I'm just testing it by building the richtextbox in xaml and providing a language to the xaml language attribute. I've read two different resources and one says I need to set the language attribute, and the other says I need to set the xml:lang attribute. Neither seems to work. I've tried setting either one to "es" for Spanish, and I've also tried setting both to "es". I've also tried french by setting them to "fr-FR", without success. The only thing that happens is that english words aren't marked, but the other language words are marked as misspelled. I also read that I need to change the keyboard language. This would be a problem for my application as the language within the application needs to be switched on the fly, so having the end user go to their keyboard settings just so spellcheck will work is a problem. However, I've changed my keyboard settings, and spell check still does not work properly. This time it doesn't mark anything as misspelled, even misspelled english words. What am I missing? • Selected Item in Dropdown Lists from Enum in ASP.net MVC

  Sorry if this is a dup, my searching turned up nothing. If I give the dropdown list the same name as the property on my model the selected value is not set properly. Meaning this works: <%= Html.DropDownList("fam", typeof(EnumFamily), Model.Family)%> But this doesn't: <%= Html.DropDownList("family", typeof(EnumFamily), Model.Family)%> Because I'm trying to pass an entire object directly to the controller method I am posting to, I would really like to have the dropdown list named for the property on the model. When using the "right" name, the dropdown does post correctly, I just can't seem to set the selected value. I don't think this matters but I am running MVC 1 on mono 2.6

• Redirect on Ajax Jquery Call

  Hi, I am newbie to ajax here and I know somebody would have encountered this problem already. As check the value of the xhr.status = 200 textStatus = parseError errorThrown = "Invalid JSON -Markup of my HTML Login Page- $(document).ready(function(){ jQuery.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "populateData.htm", dataType:"json", data:"userId=SampleUser", success:function(response){ //code here }, error: function(xhr, textStatus, errorThrown) { alert('Error! Status = ' + xhr.status); } }); }); I checked on my firebug that there is a 302 HTTP response but I am not sure how to catch the response and redirect the user to the login page. Any idea here? • Transforming coordinates from an image control to the image source in WPF

  I'm trying to learn WPF, so here's a simple question, I hope: I have a window that contains an Image element bound to a separate data object with user-configurable Stretch property <Image Name="imageCtrl" Source="{Binding MyImage}" Stretch="{Binding ImageStretch}" /> When the user moves the mouse over the image, I would like to determine the coordinates of the mouse with respect to the original image (before stretching/cropping that occurs when it is displayed in the control), and then do something with those coordinates (update the image). I know I can add an event-handler to the MouseMove event over the Image control, but I'm not sure how best to transform the coordinates: void imageCtrl_MouseMove(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Point locationInControl = e.GetPosition(imageCtrl); Point locationInImage = ??? updateImage(locationInImage); } Now I know I could compare the size of Source to the ActualSize of the control, and then switch on imageCtrl.Stretch to compute the scalars and offsets on X and Y, and do the transform myself. But WPF has all the information already, and this seems like functionality that might be built-in to the WPF libraries somewhere. So I'm wondering: is there a short and sweet solution? Or do I need to write this myself? EDIT I'm appending my current, not-so-short-and-sweet solution. • Images missing after moving Django to new server

  I'm moving Django project to new server. I'm newbie in Django, and I don't know where should be upload folder. There are all images which should be displayed on website. In config file I haven't seen upload folder I could specify, so I'm guessing it always should be the same location for django projects or I just can't find it. Locations are saved in database. When I've put uploaded files into media folder, so url was like domain.co.uk/media/upload/media/images/year/month/day/image_name.ext and the same is on the old website, images on website ware still missing. All images are visible if I put url by hand, but django doesn't seems to see files. I'm having trouble with the following code: User < AR acts_as_authentic belongs_to :owner, :polymorphic => true end Worker < AR has_one :user, :as => :owner accepts_nested_attributes_for :user end Employer < AR has_one :user, :as => :owner accepts_nested_attributes_for :user end I'd like to create registration forms based on user types, and to include authentication fields such as username and password. I currently do this: UserRegistrationController < AC #i.e. a new Employer def new @employer = Employer.new @employer.build_user end ... end I then include User fields with fields_for. All views render fine, but here's the catch: I cannot build a User, it tells me :password is a wrong method, so I guess the authentication logic was bypassed. What should I do? Am I doing it wrong altogether? Should I drop polymorphic associations in favor of Single Table Inheritance? Whatever I do, I have to make sure it plays nicely with Authlogic.

  So this is related to a question I asked earlier. I am trying to display an alert using a specified layout.   Hi, I'm developing an application in Eclipse and it runs fine from within Eclipse. The problem I'm having is that when I export it to a jar file and run it from the command line I get a NoClassDefFound error for javax.mail.internet. In both my project build path and class path I have included the activation.jar and mail.jar libraries required for me to use javax.mail.internet, and like I said it works fine from within Eclipse but not when I export it to a jar. If my build path has those files and so does my class path why would this not be working? • iPhone openGLES performance tuning

  Hey there! I'm trying now for quite a while to optimize the framerate of my game without really making progress. I'm running on the newest iPhone SDK and have a iPhone 3G 3.1.2 device. I invoke arround 150 drawcalls, rendering about 1900 Triangles in total (all objects are textured using two texturelayers and multitexturing. most textures come from the same textureAtlasTexture stored in pvrtc 2bpp compressed texture). This renders on my phone at arround 30 fps, which appears to me to be way too low for only 1900 triangles. I tried many things to optimize the performance, including batching together the objects, transforming the vertices on the CPU and rendering them in a single drawcall. this yelds 8 drawcalls (as oposed to 150 drawcalls), but performance is about the same (fps drop to arround 26fps) I'm using 32byte vertices stored in an interleaved array (12bytes position, 12bytes normals, 8bytes uv). I'm rendering triangleLists and the vertices are ordered in TriStrip order. I did some profiling but I don't really know how to interprete it. instruments-sampling using Instruments and Sampling yelds this result: http://neo.cycovery.com/instruments_sampling.gif telling me that a lot of time is spent in "mach_msg_trap". I googled for it and it seems this function is called in order to wait for some other things. But wait for what?? instruments-openGL instruments with the openGL module yelds this result: http://neo.cycovery.com/intstruments_openglES_debug.gif but here i have really no idea what those numbers are telling me shark profiling: profiling with shark didn't tell me much either: http://neo.cycovery.com/shark_profile_release.gif the largest number is 10%, spent by DrawTriangles - and the whole rest is spent in very small percentage functions Can anyone tell me what else I could do in order to figure out the bottleneck and could help me to interprete those profiling information? • Autocomplete or Select box? (design problem)

  I'm working on a comparison website, so needless to say the search function is the primary feature of the site. I have two input text boxes and a search button. At the moment, the input text boxes use Ajax to query the database and show a drop-down box, but I'm wondering if it would be more intuitive to use a select box instead? The second box is dependant on the first, as when the first is selected theres another ajax query so only the available options for the first selection appear in the autocomplete box. Autocomplete Pros: - "Feels" right? - Looks more appealing than a select box (css design)? Cons: - the user has to be instructed on how to use the search (made to think?) - Only really works off the bat with javascript enabled. - The user may get confused if they type in what they want and no box appears (i.e., no results) Select Box Pros: - Can bring up the list of options / know whats there from the outset. - We use select boxes every day (locations etc.) so we're used to how they work. (more intuitive?) Cons: - Can look a little unaesthetic when theres too many options to choose from. I'm thinking maybe at most around 100 options for my site over time. • Checking if a RoutedEvent has any handlers

  I've got a custom Button class, that always performs the same action when it gets clicked (opening a specific window). I'm adding a Click event that can be assigned in the button's XAML, like a regular button. When it gets clicked, I want to execute the Click event handler if one has been assigned, otherwise I want to execute the default action. The problem is that there's apparently no way to check if any handlers have been added to an event. I thought a null check on the event would do it: if (Click == null) { DefaultClickAction(); } else { RaiseEvent(new RoutedEventArgs(ClickEvent, this));; } ...but that doesn't compile. The compiler tells me that I can't do anything other than += or -= to an event outside of the defining class, event though I'm trying to do this check INSIDE the defining class. I've implemented the correct behavior myself, but it's ugly and verbose and I can't believe there isn't a built-in way to do this. I must be missing something. • Problem reading from two separate InputStreams

  I'm building a Yammer client for Android in Scala and have encountered the following issue. • Equivalent of typedef in C#

  Is there a typedef equivalent in C#, or someway to get some sort of similar behaviour? I've done some googling, but everywhere I look seems to be negative. Currently I have a situation similar to the following: class GenericClass<T> { public event EventHandler<EventData> MyEvent; public class EventData : EventArgs { /* snip */ } // ... snip } Now, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this can very quickly lead to alot of typing (appologies for the horrible pun) when trying to implement a handler for that event. It'd end up being something like this: GenericClass<int> gcInt = new GenericClass<int>; gcInt.MyEvent += new EventHandler<GenericClass<int>.EventData>(gcInt_MyEvent); // ... private void gcInt_MyEvent(object sender, GenericClass<int>.EventData e) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } Except, in my case, I was already using a complex type, not just an int. It'd be nice if it was possible to simplify this a little... Edit: ie. perhaps typedefing the EventHandler instead of needing to redefine it to get similar behaviour.
