  • Reuseable Platform For Custom Board Game

    Is there a generic platform to allow me to customize the rules to a board game. The board game uses a square grid, similar to Checkers or Chess. I was hoping to take some of the work out of creating this computer opponent, by reusing what is already written. I would think that there would be a pre-written routine for deciding which moves would lead to the best outcome, and all that I would need to program is the pieces, legal moves, what layout constitutes a win/lose or draw, and perhaps some kind of scoring for value of pieces. I have seen chess programs that appear to use a recursive routine, so they think anywhere from 2 to 20 moves ahead to create varying degrees of difficulty. I have noticed this on chess.com. The game I am programming will not be as complex. Is there a platform designed to be re-used for different grid/piece based games. JavaScript would be preferable, but Java or Perl would be acceptable.

  • SP1 of RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010 released, featuring VS2010 and Client Profile support

    As always, Telerik's plans were closely aligned with Microsoft's release schedule, and we were dedicated to provide VS2010 support even before Visual Studio 2010 was officially launched. Now that the first VS2010 launch event is over, here comes the first of many Telerik Service Packs to support VS2010. This RadControls for WinForms release is the first to provide support for the Client Profile, introduced with .NET3.5, and now default when starting new windows forms projects with VS2010. The Client Profile is a smaller version of the.NET Framework that includes only the assemblies needed for deploying client-based applications, which in turn reduces the size of the application. Basically, the Design time classes are excluded from the Client Profile (CP), because they are only needed for designing and not for running an application.   • Video monetising and simple shop, platform?

    I have this client that wants a single-product website. The product is a training-video that they want to deliver virtually and optionally physically. I usually do all the front-end design and back-end development but the budget is close to $0 to start with. So I'm looking for a platform like shopify or something where a shop/cart can be set up quickly and simply with minimal up-front cost - but which can accomodate some kind of paywall (DRM too?) for the online video with an option to purchase for an aditional cost the physical DVD. Am I approaching the wrong way all together? Or do you know of any platform that will accomodate the specs?

    In a .net 2.0 C# application I use the following code to detect the operating system platform: string os_platform = System.Environment.OSVersion.Platform.ToString();<br/> This returns "Win32NT". The problem is that it returns "Win32NT" even when running on Windows Vista 64bit. Is there any other method to know the correct platform (32 or 64bit)? Note that it should also detect 64bit when run as 32bit app on Windows 64bit.

  • Moving all UI logic to Client Side?

    Our team originally consisted of mostly server side developers with minimum expertise in Javascript. In ASP.NET we used to write a lot of UI logic in code-behind or more recently through controllers in MVC. A little while ago 2 high level client side developers joined our team. They can do in HTMl/CSS/Javascript pretty much anything that we could previously do with server-side code and server-side web controls: Show/hide controls Do validation Control AJAX refreshing So I started to think that maybe it would be more efficient to just create a high level API around our business logic, kinda like Amazon Fulfillment API: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/fws/latest/APIReference/, so that client side developers would fully take over the UI, while server side developers would only concentrate on business logic. So for ordering system you would have a high level API like: OrderService.asmx CreateOrderResponse CreateOrder(CreateOrderRequest) AddOrderItem AddPayment - SubmitPayment - GetOrderByID FindOrdersByCriteria ... There would be JSON/REST access to API, so it would be easy to consume from client-side UI. We could use this API for both internal UI development and also for 3-rd parties to create their own applications. With advances in Javascript and availability of good client side developers, is it a good time to get rid of code-behind/controllers and just concentrate on developing high level APIs (ala Amazon) that client side developers can consume?

    I'm given the task to increase user visits and conversions on for a recruitment website. Conversions would be interested job seekers submitting their CV. The manager would first like to increase the organic search results and optimize the website before starting with targeted campaigns. The problem is, they are using a proprietary recruitment software platform which I can barely add changes to. For example, the url's all look like dynamic url's without any semantic meaning and the markup is almost completely build automatically by that platform. I'm also confident that the lack of submitted CV's is due to a bad user experience of the website (no incentives or clear CTA to register) Besides optimizing the static texts and page titles, is there anything I can do? Should I link billing to my own credit card and then have the client pay me (they have to pay me to manage the account anyway), or should I have the client pay Google directly? How is this usually done? If it is the later, what is the best way to have them input their payment info?

    The place I work is now looking into developing a new e-commerce site on the Magento platform. Magento will fill all of our needs. I was just wondering if it is in anyway unprofessional doing it this way (Impression is something we are really worried about), will people who visit the site look at our business different knowing we used Magento or any other e-commerce platform. There are ways to find out. I use Chrome Sniffer to find out what platforms are used to develop each site, there are other tools available for different browsers.
