• How to learn PHP effectively?

  A dozen of bad tutorials out there that teach you bad habits especially when we speak about PHP. I want to learn how to avoid the things that can lead me to develop inefficient web applications. I like to learn from videos but most videos I've found on the internet are provided by people who do not follow good practices. My second option is to learn from books but I did not find a good book for starters in PHP! It would be very helpful for me if you can tell me about your story in learning PHP, what are things that I should avoid? How to learn about PHP security from the beginning to avoid unlearn something later on?. Please provide links to books, websites that provide high quality video tutorials for PHP, and you tips for a good start!

• Do we still need to avoid using frame/iframe for good SEO?

  I thought frame and iframe are something bad for SEO. Today I was doing some search and searching for "numismatica" in Google.it and the 3rd site is www.lemonete.com (ranks high also in Google.com). It's all made with frames. A competitor site (www.nummus.com) that is all done with no frames ranks much lower when searching for the same word: "numismatica" So can we use frame, don't they hit SEO ranking anymore? Any explanation (possibly simple) would be appreciated also about the fact the 2nd site ranks much lower. :) UPDATE: thanks for all the replies , I noticed now I wrote down the wrong url, it was not lemonete.it (which is just a spam site) but lemonete.com.

• Configure audio on HP ENVY 4 ultrabook

  I want to configure audio for ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. Currently the audio just does not play. If i try and plug in headphones then somewhere midway to being fully plugged in the audio plays on the headphones, I plug in further and the sound disappears. How do I get this to work? lspci | grep audio Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller My laptop is one the beats edition HP laptops, and the driver for win7 was an IDT HD audio driver. --EDIT-- The output for cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec is Codec: IDT 92HD91BXX Codec: Intel PantherPoint HDMI I need to get both the IDT card to work and the HDMI card to work with my TV. --EDIT-- --EDIT 2-- I have added blacklist snd-usb-audio to the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Now the sound plays from my laptop speakers only when I plug in a headphones/external speaker. • How frequently Googlebot fetch sitemaps? Is it depending on page rank?

  How much frequently google fetches sitemaps? I am now working with a high traffic website normally have 30 new posts per minute.But currently it provides sitemaps which links to new 100 posts(3 minutes). Is this method is enough ?. Is Bots fetch sitemaps every 3 minutes?. Did need to change sitemaps to list all 5M posts(indexed sitemaps)?. How this change will effect on traffic and page rank. Is google bot remove urls that previously listed on sitemap but not now?

• What the different hardware temperatures listed in psensor, sensor viewer etc reffer to?

  I have installed psensor and see a list of temperatures, but listed as ”Temperature 1”, 2, 3 etc . I can only guess where the processor is: but who's who for sure? The same question stands for Sensors Viewer. I can also type sensors in Terminal but I get no more than that acpi -t gives Thermal 0: ok, 65.0 degrees C Thermal 1: ok, 37.9 degrees C Thermal 2: ok, 56.0 degrees C Thermal 3: active, 71.0 degrees C Considering psensor, I know for a fact that: - the temperature that varies most depending on the CPU use is Temp1 and it is one of the two highest - the other high temperature is Temp4 and it goes to the ceiling when using youtube/flash - Temp2 is very stable at a medium level of 50-60 degrees Celsius - Temp3 is by far the lowest and most imobile So, I guess Temp1 is the CPU temperature, and Temp4 is the GPU temperature. Temp2 and 3 must be the motherboard and the hdd. Does anybody know for sure?

• The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

• What is the XACT API?

  I wanted to use DirectMusic in my game, but it's not in the June 2010 SDK, so I thought that I had to use DirectSound. Then I saw the XAudio2.h header in the SDK's include folder and found that XAudio2 is the replacement for DirectSound. Both are low-level. During my research I stumbled across the XACT API, but can't find a good explanation on it. Is XACT to XAudio2 what DirectMusic was to DirectSound? By which I mean, is the XACT API a high-level, easier-to-use API for playing sounds that abstracts away the details of XAudio2? If not, what is it?

• Is there now any way to convert mp3 files to m4a or aac 192kbit?

  Since about two years now I am trying to find a way to convert high quality mp3 files to m4a or aac files with a fixed bitrate 192k. Please don't suggest using another format - i thought this through as far as it goes. The problem here is: ffmpeg obvioulsy can't convert to a higher bitrate than 152k. Even when it says it does so the resulting files still have 152k instead of 192k. ffmpeg also has/had a bug not writing the bitrate into the audio file tags which means when testing you have to calculate the bitrate manually by dividing the filesize by the length of the audio in seconds (resulting in 152k - see above) choosing faac as converter gets me the same results other programs don't work reliably (see this thread Howto convert audio files to *.m4a? I know that this is not an original new problem but I am wondering if there is still no way to convert with ubuntu/kubuntu 12.04 after a lot time passed and I can't find some of the bug issues mentioned in the other thread anymore. So: Is there a solution after all?

  I erased Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Latitude E4200. I an very happy with my choice but with little pity. I cannot use the wireless service in my university as the build-in device works unstable. I bought a USB wireless device, which solve the problem. However, the build-in device keep to sent me message about unable to connect, which waste laptop's cup & battery. The phsical bottom to turn off wireless affect both devices. So the question is: "How can I manually shut down wireless device?" There is another interest comes to my mind: "Does 2 wireless improve the overall internet usage if I run a high-internet-consuming program like BT ?" Thank for your time and energy.

• Mail Hosting That Will Allow Outbound Bulk Mail?

  No, I'm not a spammer! I do volunteer work for a non-profit social services agency. They send out daily email with several hundred recipients on each message. Their web hosting company has been flagging the email as spam due to the volume. So I'm looking for an email hosting provider that won't do that. (I can separate out the web hosting function; we just need mail hosting right now.) They can't use something like MailChimp, Constant Contact, or Vertical Response because some of the mail is just inbound emails they aggregate and send out, and they don't want the overhead of "rebuilding" it in a "newsletter" service. I think that Google Apps for Business might be a good solution, but the pricing is just too high for this under-funded non-profit. I've applied for the non-profit discount but haven't heard back yet. Is there mail hosting service that might fit their needs? Thanks in advance.

• Backtrack My "Education"

  About a year or so ago, I decided to start programming. I really, just jumped into a language (Perl) and went from there. What I regret is that I just jumped in: I didn't learn the basics (if you would call them basics). I didn't learn about Computer Science. This issue, I believe, is holding me back. Where should I "restart"? Are there any books, articles, etc. that I should read? Are there any topics an experienced programmer should know? What's your advice? Thanks! • Openbox overhead is similar to that with gnome-panel

  I just installed openbox via sudo apt-get install openbox. It already has obconf, btw. I noticed that when I logged into my openbox session instead of the one I usually use (gnome-panel and NOT Ubuntu 2D or one of the high overhead environments) and checked via htop, I found that a similar amount of RAM was being occupied (~600 MB or so) with openbox or gnome-panel. What gives? Openbox looks lighter but it certainly isn't any different. Obviously the same daemons etc would run in both environments as they share the same folders. Is gnome-panel as good as openbox then?

  Is there commercial-grade computer animation software available for Ubuntu, similar to the professional software sold for the Windows operating system? This question goes out to those of you who may be using such software professionally. My daughter recently graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, and needs to put together an animation portfolio in order to interest employers in the field. As you know, such software is usually provided by the employer and the costs are high - several thousand dollars. I suggested that she investigate Ubuntu as a possible way to acquire the tools she needs. But, since I have no idea what might be available, either as open source or proprietary animation software, I am reaching out to the Ubuntu community for help in the hope someone who is using such software can help her. I am not sure if the new position's title conveys a sideways move or an advancement. So, all other things being roughly equal (salary, domain of expertise, etc.), what is the external difference between these software engineer titles (in general and regardless of any particular company, if possible): senior engineer senior research engineer senior staff engineer member of technical staff principal engineer Edit: Let me elaborate on "member of technical staff" since it's kind of uncommon. I think it's a high title, commonly associated with research. I know that Oracle, VMWare, and the old Bell Labs have these titles. See: Member of Technical Staff .   I believe that my current game project is very well-suited for educational gaming; so well-suited, in fact, that I know of several different schools (one community college and at least one or two high schools) that have used versions of it at some time or another.   I need a definite list of directories, one or more per platform, where to put game save files and other game generated data. Either based no the OS developer specification, or because it is common usage if there is no recommandation. Please provide one answer per platform, with different directories. Also, example of how to get the directory location in C++ or C is best, as it's the language you'll have more hard time. Locations: Player's game data (saved games, config). Shared game data (like high-score or config for all computer users). Temporary game data (aka cache directory).

• Algorithms for rainfall + river creation in procedurally generated terrain

  I've recently become fascinated by the things that can be done with procedurally terrain and have started experimenting with world building a bit. I'd like to be able to make worlds something like Dwarf fortress with biomes created from meshing together various maps. So first step has been done. Using the diamond-square algorithm I've created some nice hieghtmaps. Next step is I would like to add some water features and have them somewhat realistically generated with rainfall. I've read about a few different approaches such as starting at the high points of the map, and "stepping" down to the lowest neighboring point, pooling/eroding as it works its way down to sea level. Are there any documented algorithms with this or are they more off the cuff? Would love any advice/thoughts.
