• Windows XP won't boot after drive transplant

  Hi all, I moved my hard drive from my Lenovo laptop into my Asus Eee PC netbook. When I started the netbook, after POST all I got was a black screen with a cursor in the upper left corner. I thought that the migration should work OK because this was a 32-bit version of Windows XP, and the Atom processor in the Asus should support the x86 instruction set. However, I don't know much about Windows, so maybe this was a dumb thought. I did verify that the BIOS can find the drive. It required major surgery to replace the drive, so any solution requiring me to remove the transplant drive is not going to fly. Keeping in mind that the netbook has no optical drive and that I have no other Windows computers (all my other computers run Linux), is there any way I can fix this problem? Thanks! Nathan

• Blinking cursor after repair install on Win XP

  I have an Asus Eee PC netbook which I upgraded the drive of. After some shenanigans, I was able to do a repair install from my Windows XP CD. However, I still have a blinking cursor in the upper-left-hand corner after POST. I tried going into the recovery console and doing chkdsk/fixboot/fixmbr with no effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated! (Sorry if it's inappropriate to post a followup as a new question; I'm not sure how I should do it in a way that will cause it to actually be seen). • Rails ActiveRecord: Select Posts WITHOUT comments

  I have a a Comments table and a Posts table, where a Post has many comments and a comment belongs to a post (i.e. it has a post_id in the table). How can I efficiently select the last ten Posts that DO NOT have comments. I can't seem to accomplish this without first selecting all the posts and checking each for a 0 comment count. • How do you author HDR content?

  How do you make it easy for your artists to author content for an HDR renderer? What kinds of tools should you provide, and what workflows need to change, in going from LDR to HDR? Note that I'm not asking about the technical aspects of implementing an HDR renderer, but about best practices for creating materials and lighting in HDR. I've googled around a bit, but there doesn't seem to be much about this topic on the web. Can anyone point me to some good resources on this, or share their own experiences? Some specific points: Lighting - how can lighting artists pick HDR light colors? Do they have a standard LDR color picker and then a multiplier? Is the multiplier in gamma or linear space? Maybe instead of a multiplier it's a log-luminance? Or a physical brightness level, like the number of lumens? How will they know what multiplier/luminance/brightness is "correct" for a given light? Materials - how can texture artists make emissive color maps, such as neon signs, TV screens, skyboxes, etc? Can you paint one as a regular LDR (8-bit-per-channel) image and apply a multiplier (or log-luminance, etc.)? Are there cases where it's necessary to actually paint HDR images? If so, how do you go about this in Photoshop (or other software)?

  My OpenGL setup is somehow configured to work like so: (-1, 1) (0, 1) (1, 1) (-1, 0) (0, 0) (1, 0) (-1, -1) (0, -1) (1, -1) How do I configure it so that it works like so: (0, 0) (SW/2, 0) (SW, 0) (0, SH/2) (SW/2, SH/2) (SW, SH/2) (0, SH) (SW/2, SH) (SW/2, SH) SW as Screen Width. SH as Screen Height. This solution would have to fix the problem of I can't translate significantly(1) on the Z axis. Depth doesn't seem to be working either. The Perspective code I'm using is that of my WORKING GLUT OpenGL code which has a cool 3d grid and camera system etc. But my OpenGL setup doesn't seem to work with SFML. • Handheld Linux device can't see one wireless network

  I'm using a Nokia N810 running OS 2008 (version 5.2008.43-7; should be the latest). It can see networks up and down the street in my neighborhood and can connect to mine using WEP. I can also connect to free networks at restaurants and the like. When I bring it into work, it can't see a wireless network ("No connections available"). When I use netstumbler on my laptop I can see a list of several essids showing green connectivity for the network. I know that the network has its essid broadcast, and I know that it's unsecured. When I run iwlist wlan0 scan, I see several APs with no essid, but I don't see anything with an essid set. I have verified using iwlist that my hardware supports the correct channels and speeds. I know this isn't a Nokia/mobile forum, but it's running what's basically a Debian kernel. Any suggestions on what to do in this case? I'm really frustrated by this. Thanks, Nathan

  I've been messing around with the SQLite Designer in Visual Studio 2008 and I have noticed that when I use the generated Insert/Update statements they run extremely slow. Example: I have a data table with four columns and 5700 rows it took ~5 mins to insert the data into the database table However, I wrote my own database connection and insert methods using parameters and a single transaction and the same 5700 rows were inserted in under 1 second. Why is the generated code so slow and what is benefit to even using it? Thanks. Nathan

• Horizontal Scrolling Flash Game/Large Horizontal Scene

  Hello, I'm currently learning Flash (CS4, AS3) and am creating a game. I have currently 1 flv file with 4 scenes, I then move from left to right and then to scene 2 and go from left to right. This is the game where items pop up that need to be clicked on and you get points. Is there any way I can combine these onto 1 scene? Flash only allows you to have a maximum of 2880px wide. The reason for this is the transition between the scenes is RUBBISH and that my AS is not working correctly in between scenes (it loses values). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Nathan

  I'm trying to create a custom action for my Wix install, and it's just not working, and I'm unsure why.   For a grouped product, I would like to display a link to the simple products it is composed of. • Rails test db doesn't persist record changes

  I've been trying to solve a problem for a few weeks now. I am running rspec tests for my Rails app, and they are working fine except for one error that I can't seem get my head around. I am using MySQL with the InnoDB engine. I have set config.use_transactional_fixtures = true in spec_helper.rb I load my test fixtures manually with the command rake spec:db:fixtures:load. The rspec test is being written for a BackgrounDRb worker, and it is testing that a record can have its state updated (through the state_machine gem). Here is my problem: I have a model called Listings. The rspec test calls the update_sold_items method within a file called listing_worker.rb. This method calls listing.sell for a particular record, which sets the listing record's 'state' column to 'sold'. So far, this is all working fine, but when the update_sold_items method finishes, my rspec test fails here: listing = Listing.find_by_listing_id(listing_id) listing.state.should == "sold" expected: "sold", got: "current" (using ==) I've been trying to track down why the state change is not persisting, but am pretty much lost. Here is the result of some debugging code that I placed in the update_sold_items method during the test: pp listing.state # => "current" listing.sell! listing.save! pp listing.state # => "sold" listing.reload pp listing.state # => "current" I cannot understand why it saves perfectly fine, but then reverts back to the original record whenever I call reload, or Listing.find etc. Thanks for reading this, and please ask any questions if I haven't given enough information. It only seems to be a problem when I am updating records that already exist in the database.

• Converting an EC2 AMI to vmdk image

  I've come quite close to getting Amazon Linux to boot inside VirtualBox, thanks to this answer and these websites. A quick overview of the steps I've taken: Launch EC2 instance with Amazon Linux 2011.09 64-bit AMI dd the contents of the EBS volume over ssh to a local image file. Mount the image file as a loopback device and then to a local mount point. Create a new empty disk image file, partition with an offset for a bootloader, and create an ext4 filesystem. Mount the new image's partition and copy everything from the EC2 image. Install grub (using Ubuntu's grub-legacy-ec2 package, not grub2). Convert the image file to vmdk using qemu-img. Create a new VirtualBox VM with the vmdk. Now the VM boots, grub loads, and the kernel is found. But it fails when it tries to mount the root device: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/xvda1" found dracut Warning: Boot has failed. To debug this issue add "rdshell" to the kernel command line. dracut Warning: Signal caught! dracut Warning: Boot has failed. To debug this issue add "rdshell" to the kernel command line. Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Pid: 1, comm: init Not tainted 2.6.35.14-107.1.39.amzn1.x86_64 #1 I have tried changing /boot/grub/menu.lst to find the root device by label and UUID, but nothing works. I'm guessing the xen kernel is not compatible with VirtualBox. The reasoning behind all this effort is to make a Vagrant box that is as close to possible as the production enviroment, so deploys can be tested locally. I know it's cheap to do test runs on EC2, but poor connectivity often ruins the experience. Plus it would be really nice to have a virtual machine with the production environment so that co-workers don't have to install everything under the sun just to get up and running with app development. If I were to try running a different kernel, what kernel could I get to be as close as possible to Amazon Linux 2011.09?

• How to Install OS without DVD and USB boot

  I just purchased a used Dell F1D 1U rack mount server and would like to install Ubuntu or ESXi with Virtual Disks or anything for that matter. I'v read that Dell's have built in DRAC so you can access it remotely. There are 3 ethernet plugs in the back but I dont know which one to use. In the BIOS it says I can configure Remote access on [com1] or [com2] not sure if that is ethernet 1 & 2. I also set it up so to use a static IP adress. Thats as far as I have gone. Not sure what to do next. I'v Tried to do a PXE server with TFTP but get stuck at Error "cant locate file" or something like that. Not even sure I want to go that route anymore because of all the hassel of editing files. All my computers are OSX or Linux and the only Windows I have is via VMWare. What steps to i do now?

I've been going through Amazon.com's listings on this subject, and I've identified a few possibilities, but am unsure which would be best for a C# developer who can write very simple Regexs, but wants to learn more. On a scale of 0-9 where 0 is knowing how to spell "Regex" but nothing else, and 9 where I could write a book on the subject out of my own head, I would place myself at 2. Would I perhaps be better getting "Beginning Regular Expressions" (BRE) instead, to start with? Please help me resolve my confusion!

• Why is clip space always referred to as "homogeneous clip space"?

  I've noticed in almost everything I've read so far that the term "clip space" is prepended with the word "homogeneous". Now I understand that it roughly means "all the same", but I don't understand why there is the express need to say "homogeneous clip space". When is clip space not homogeneous and why do we need to differentiate? And for that matter, what exactly does it mean that we're calling it "homogeneous clip space"? Homogenous in relation to what? In what way are the vertices "all the same"?

• DirectX11 Swap Chain RGBA vs BGRA Format

  I was wondering if anyone could elaborate any further on something that's been bugging me. In DirectX9 the main supported back buffer formats were D3DFMT_X8R8B8G8 and D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 (Both being BGRA in layout). http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb174314(v=vs.85).aspx With the initial version of DirectX10 their was no support for BGRA and all the textbooks and online tutorials recommend DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM (being RGBA in layout). Now with DirectX11 BGRA is supported again and it seems as if microsoft recommends using a BGRA format as the back buffer format. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh465096.aspx Are there any suggestions or are there performance implications of using one or the other? (I assume not as obviously by specifying the format of the underlying resource the runtime will handle what bits your passing through and than infer how to utilise them based on the format.)

• XAML Controls in WinForms

  We're considering converting our WinForms application to a WPF application. Part of the reason is that WPF/XAML seem to be the future. We are also using third party controls that we would like to be able to phase out. Making this conversion seems like a pretty big and time consuming undertaking, though. Would it make sense to develop XAML controls that could be used in our WinForms application as a first step in the process? My thinking is that the same controls would then be used in the WPF application and all of the look, feel, and functionality would be built into the controls in either environment.

• What should be tested in Javascript?

  At work, we've just started on a heavily Javascript based application (actually using Coffeescript, but still), of which I've been implementing an automated test system using JsTestDriver and fabric. We've never written something with this much Javascript, so up until now we've never done any Javascript testing. I'm unsure what exactly we should be testing in our unit tests. We've written JQuery plugins for various things, so it's quite obvious that they should be verified for correctness as much as possible with JsTestDriver, but everyone else in my team seems to think that we should be testing the page level Javascript as well. I don't think we should be testing page level Javascript as unit tests, but instead using a system like Selenium to verify everything works as expected. My main reasoning for this is that at the moment, page level Javascript tests are guaranteed to fail through JsTestDriver, because they're trying to access elements on the DOM that can't possibly exist. So, what should be unit tested in Javascript?

• Share an Interface between XAML and WinForms

  We're considering converting our WinForms application to a XAML application sometime in the future. Currently, our WinForms application uses lots of tabs, which we put use to display different User Control objects. All of these controls implement a specific Interface so we can make specific calls to them and not worry about what the actual control is (things like Save, Close, Clear, etc.) Would it be possible to create a WPF project that contains XAML User Controls that implement the same Interface and display those User Controls in the WinFroms project within a tab?

  I've seen these 2 guidelines in coding c# standard and I’m not sure the what the 2nd one means. With the exception of zero and one, never hard-code a numeric value; always declare a constant instead. Use the const directive only on natural constants such as the number of days of the week. 1st what is the definition of a natural constants and if the number is not a natural constants given the 1st rule how does one declare a constant in c# without the const directive? • DirectX11 Swap Chain Format

  I was wondering if anyone could elaborate any further on something thats been bugging be me. In DirectX9 the main supported back buffer formats were D3DFMT_X8R8B8G8 and D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 (Both being BGRA in layout). http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb174314(v=vs.85).aspx With the initial version of DirectX10 their was no support for BGRA and all the textbooks and online tutorials recommend DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM (being RGBA in layout). Now with DirectX11 BGRA is supported again and it seems as if microsoft recommends using a BGRA format as the back buffer format. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh465096.aspx Is their any suggestions or are their performance implications of using one or the other. (I assume not as obviously by specifying the format of the underlying resource the runtime will handle what bits your passing through and than infer how to utilise them based on the format).
