  • Leopard Network Shares and browsing are unreliable

    I have two macs, running Leopard 10.5.8. One is the 13" MBP connected via WiFi, and the other is a 24" 2008 iMac, connected via ethernet. There are at least another 6-10 machines (windows and mac) awake on the network (with shares) at any given time, yet there are plenty of times where I cannot see any devices/shares in either my "Shared" section in Finder, nor can I see any computers in "Network" in Finder. Restarting doesn't help. I've restarted all the networking gear in the house to no avail. Our network is a series of gigabit switches connected to a D-Link gaming router. I believe we use OpenDNS, and our provider is Cox. I hate having to use "Go - Connect to Server" to browse to commonly used file shares (by IP). I'd like to know why my shares do not always and consistently appear in Leopard. Edit: I ran OnyX this morning, and performed the cleaning and maintenance operations (including disk permissions) on both my Macs, and at least one of my macs has started showing network devices again. (the other is still going). No idea how long this will last. Any ideas as to what is causing this issue, and how to prevent it? Edit 2: Aaaand there the shares go again. So running OnyX is not a permanent or reliable fix for this issue. Edit 3: After a clean reinstall and update, network shares are still unreliable. The SMBClient command mentioned in comments shows me the information it's supposed to show, but the shares do not appear in the shared section. They'll also vanish at random and reappear at random throughout the day.

  • compiling iphone program in snow leopard wtih libsqlite3 library

    Hi, I develop an iphone application which uses sqlite3 as a database. That time my OS X version was leopard. So add added libsqlite3.0.dylib to frameworks and compile without any problems it complied and with any problems I could run it on the device as well. This week I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac. Removing old Leopard version and install a fresh Snow leopard system. But my problem is now I cannot compile that program because it will give errors with sqlite3 library. I added sqlite3.0.dylib using selecting targets and then selecting file. Also tried adding selecting it from directly /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib I get two different errors when I compiled to device and to simulator when compiled to device, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file is not of required architecture* When compiled to simulator, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file was built for unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386) ld: warning: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libSystem.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file ld: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file Command /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 i also tried with adding sqlite3.dylib (, I think sqlite3.0.dylib is linked to sqlite3.dylib.) but no luck.   • Automatically starting svnserve on Snow Leopard

    I have installed Subversion onto my iMac running Snow Leopard, but am having trouble getting svnserve to start up automatically. As I understand it (I'm still fairly green with OSX), the best way to do that is to utilize launchd. To that end, I have created the following .plist file in the /Library/LaunchDaemons folder.   • iTunes can't see iPhone after reinstalling Leopard

    My Mac hard disk died, so I replaced it and installed OS X Leopard 10.5.8. Problem now, iTunes doesn't see my iPhone 3GS at all. iPhoto works just fine, but iTunes is blind. I have too much info on my iPhone, I don't wish to restore/reset it and wish to get everything from my iPhone sync'd into iTunes afresh. How can I do that?

  • Trouble upgrading OSX, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

    So I have a intel-based macbook with osx 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

  • osx split external hard drive partition

    Hi, I currently have a 640GB external HD that has 1 partition formatted as HSF+ Now I want to split some of the free space into a new FAT32 partition, without having to reformat the whole HD and losing all my data. I read that I'm supposed to be able to add new partitions in the Hard Disc Utility by clicking the "+" sign, without any loss of data. But in my case the "+" is not clickable and it says that this partition cannot be altered. Can anyone tell me how to proceed. Or is it impossible without reformatting the whole disc? Thanks ps: I'm running osx snow leopard 10.6.6

    After restoring from backup following filesystem corruption my user account hangs after login (After entering my password the login window disappears and all I get is the background and a mouse pointer, no spinning wheel of death etc ..) I can login as a different user and then logout and login as my main account (sometimes!) but this is not consistant. I can login with safemode ok and have tried deleting /System/Caches, ~/Library/Caches and removing all my ~/Library/Preferences which worked once but not again. Does anyone have an any idea which logs I can look in, if any, to see whats happening after login or any other tips? I'm using 10.6.2. Cheers.

  • Accessing Netatalk/AFP Shares from OS X Snow Leopard

    Recently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. One of them is a Netatalk daemon that I configured in a fashion similar to this website: http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/ Finder recognizes my server and the afp service, yet when I attempt to log in (using valid credentials), Finder indicates its the wrong username and password. I've tried altering some of the config files and my Google-fu to look for solutions, but no luck. Any tips? (This was not an issue under 8.04, if it matters)

  • Mapping drives on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard) permanently inside LAN

    Hi, How do I "map" shared folders on a Mac, permanently? With map, I do not mean 'connect', but permanently add it to the system so it exists after reboot. Since workstations tend to shutdown, I wonder also the symptoms and cures in case that happens. In Linux, this can be done using the fstab file, but I noticed that volumes are mounted in a different structure than Linux. I need this to backup some workstations, doing a recursive job over a single directory, that should contain the shared folders. I use Terminal to access the main system, so by preference, the solution would be nice that works within a bash shell vs GUI. I can access all folders in Finder. Thanks!

    ok, so I introduced a Mac laptop to my home network of Kubuntu hosts and Fedora servers. Currently I don't have NIS or LDAP setup (I got only 2 users) and I just manually setup the UID/GID on the hosts. I would like to run the following command on my Macbook: dscl . -change /Users/me UniqueID 501 1000 dscl . -change /Users/me PrimaryGroupID 20 503 chown -R 1000:503 /Users/me dscl . append /Groups/staff GroupMembership me Before I go on to hose my new Mac, I would like to know if this is the right thing to do and, if so, what are the adverse consequences I may have.   • Snow Leopard crashes my Xerox printer

    Just set up 2 brand new iMac 21.5" with OS X 10.6.2 pre-installed in our office. Now whenever we try to print an e-mail out, it re-sets the printer i.e. it switches off, does a POST and prints out a Printer Config page. I can print web pages and from other apps fine, just Apple Mail seems to be suffering. Printer is a Xerox Phaser 7750. I downloaded the drivers it recommended when i first tried printing which didn't help and then also tried downloading from the Xerox site. The latter seemed to install fine but then right at the end, it would say 'Installation Successful', then ask me to choose a printer (it found it fine, both by Bonjour and Raw TCP - i tried both) and then it would give an error message. Any help appreciated.

    Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result !   • Folder Aliases in Dock or List View cannot be expanded?

    I have been increasingly frustrated with the fact that you cannot expand a folder alias in the Finder "List View" via the "expand triangle" or in the dock. If I add a folder to the dock that contains folders and aliases to other folders, I can drill-down the "real" folders, but cannot on the aliases. Does anyone know a way to make this work?

  • Eclipse CDT on Snow Leopard cannot find binaries

    After upgraded to Snow Leopard, I can no longer run Eclipse CDT project on my computer. While the build process completes without any error, Eclipse does not recognize the binary file it created. When try to point to the binary file in Run Configuration.. dialog, it cannot find any binary in the project. Though executing the file from Terminal works fine. According to a post at on Eclipse forum, this might be a problem that Mach-O parser does not recognize 64-bit binaries. Does anyone know what are the solutions or workarounds to the problem so that I can run/debug my C++ projects on Snow Leopard. UPDATED The solution suggested by Shane, though allowing the binary created to be recognized, does introduce another problem. Since system libraries in Snow Leopard are all 64 bits, it is no longer possible to link the code created with -arch i386 with these libraries, and hence not a feasible solution yet.

  • Shared secret length limit on OSX VPN client

    I'm trying to setup the built-in VPN client with OS X. The settings I'm using (IPsec GW, shared secret, etc...) work flawlessly using other clients (IPsecuritas, vpnc, etc...) but isn't working with the built-in client. The error I get is: Wrong shared secret (not the exact message, since OS X is localized) The shared secret is 128 chars long so I'm wondering if it's hitting a length limit. I would like to know if that's true, and if so, how I could overcome it?

  • Wrong keymap in games under OSX

    While it's somewhat related to gaming, I believe this kind of question definitely belongs here. On most games, I have a very weird problem related to keymap: they apparently load a wrong map, i.e. a legacy one that has not been used since 68k AFAIK, that is a QZERTY, with M to the right of the L. I can't understand why this happens, I guess they use a bugged library for getting keyboard input, I'm not sure. While I can actually bind the keys using this map, sometimes it prevents me from binding some, such as the numbers. A very odd workaround happens with Urban Terror: if I enable and disable fullscreen, it reverts to the correct keymap (didn't try this on other games, such as Aquaria). It may or may not be useful to know that I use a custom keymap but even if I select the standard keymap before starting the game the problem happens anyway.

  • OSX AFP authentication

    I've enabled file sharing (AFP) on my iMac so that I can access it via our MacBook. I've also created a directory ~/shared/family that I have shared to specific user accounts. When I use the Finder on my MacBook, I see my iMac computer listed, and I can see my ~/Public directory on the iMac, but I can't see ~/shared/family. How do I authenticate from my MacBook to my iMac? That seems like it's the missing step.
