• Snippets between desktop and laptop

  The Situation: At work, I have a nice beefy desktop running Windows Server 2008 R2 (SharePoint dev machine). My handy ThinkPad is right next to it. Every once in a while I'd like to cut and paste or share something (usually text) between the machines: for example, I might be headed out and I'd like to take send the URL I'm reading from the desktop to the laptop. Of course I can create a share or use the Admin shares and create files to get stuff back and forth, but that seems heavyweight for what I'm thinking of. I'm thinking more along the lines of sending myself an IM. How do you get little things from machine to machine? Keep a shared folder pinned to the taskbar? Send an email to yourself? Bookmark sync? While on it, I'm looking for a decent multiple clipboard handler: maybe these two functions are combined in some nice little utility? I suspect I'm missing something simple here... Thanks... • Sphinx, reStructuredText show\hide code snippets

I want to be able to have them hidden as default, with a little "Show\Hide" button that would expand them (Example). Is there a standard way to do that? • Vim - Activiting html snippets on php files

  Hello i am using vim and snipMate i very times i need to name the html files to php, just because 1 or 2 lines of code. I every time i create an php file no introduce html and i have to activate the html snippets manually with the command set ft=php.html I intend to activate it automatically in this this line on my vimrc autocmd BufREad, BufNewFile *.php set ft=php.html Is this correct? I am missing anything or is something wrong? Thanks already.

• Eclipse CDT printing selected C code snippets/functions

  Is there a quick and dirty way to print(to dead trees) selected code (C in this case) snippets? In particular, I wanted to print about 200 lines worth of code, but print dialog only offers printing of particular pages or all pages, but not selected text! Of course, one can copy and paste into another editor, but that seems rather harsh. Also, one can output the whole shebang to .pdf but that again seems a way of doing things wrong. Perhaps there is a better way? System: Ubuntu 10.04, Eclipse 3.5 with CDT, Subversive plugin

• Formatting code snippets for blogging on Blogger

  My blog is hosted on Blogger and I frequently post code snippets in C / C# / Java / XML etc. but I find the snippet gets "mangled". Are there any web sites that I could use to parse the snippet beforehand and sort out the formatting, convert XML "<" to "<" etc. There are a numbers of questions around this area on SO but I couldn't find any that address this question directly. Edit: For @Rich answer, site states "To display the formatted code on your site, you need to get this CSS stylesheet, and add a reference to it in the section of your page". That's the problem - you can't do this on Blogger AFAIK.

• Best Application for storing code snippets

  Hi all, Just wondering if you can point me in the direction of a simple, fast program which stores code snippets. I have been using a local wiki up to now, but I find it a little annoying at times. Ideally I would like this application to be portable - i.e. it could run off of a USB stick on multiple machines with no installation. What do you guys use? EDIT: I would prefer a solution that was decoupled from the IDE and stored locally, not in the cloud. EDIT 2: Thanks for all the replies thus far, but I am still awaiting a non cloud / web based portable solution. Anyone else care to weigh in? :)

• Where to put code snippets in Rails?

  Hello all, I have this code snippets that generates a signature for POSTs. The detail of it is not important, but what I want to know is: since it is not a model-related chunk of code, it really can be use anywhere: in controllers, in models, in view helpers; even in views. So I am unsure where and, even bigger of a problem, how to activate the use of it once I place it in some location. Is it what those "require" statements are all about? That you can acquire some functionality through a "require" statement in the current file you are working on? Just so that we have an example to talk about, say, I have a little snippet of code that does cubing: def cube_it(num) num**3 end I know that I will be using it in various places across the application, so where should I put it? and when I do need to use it, how can I "summon" it? • Is there a snippets program that allows for tab entry of variables across the mac?

  I love Sublime Text editor and the ability to create code snippets like so: <snippet> <content><![CDATA[\$("${1:selector}").${2:method}]]></content> <tabTrigger>jq</tabTrigger> </snippet> This allows me to type jq[tab] and then have it expand to $("selector").method where I am able to tab through the string 'selector' and 'method' in order to change them. But what I'd really like to do is use this same snippet when working in Chrome Dev Tools, so I was looking for a mac snippets program that could support this. However, the three programs that I looked at (Keyboard Maestro, Snippets, CodeBox) don't support the ability to tab through to highlight predetermined strings and change them. Does anyone know of an app that will do this?

• Did anyone experience negative SERP movement after implementing rel=author?

  I am not intrested in why I don't see the picture in SERPs. So I know this is borderline off-limits but I turned every stone in the web (including DDgo) trying to find anybody experiencing a worse position in SERPs after implementing rel=author tags. In Google Webmaster Tools: Everything seems fine but the first results dropped 14 places in SERPs in the past two days. The original landing page went down from first page to 5th page in a few days. It is a useful site with original content concerning marriage laws. This specific page is no where to be found and now the first result leads to the home page. Assuming everything else is the same with no changes made to the site at all is there a reason the rel=author tag will cause such a plummet? Additional info that might be useful: The google+ account is as dead as a palm pilot.

• How do I let programmers know something useful?

  Quite often I go through pain to discover how to do something useful, in this case how to get PHP running on Google App Engine without the 'resin.jar too big' problem, but I have nowhere to let people know. In this particular case, the web answers were incomplete, outdated or plain wrong. I could create a blog, but it's overkill. I just want let programmers know a quick solution/approach. I'm not sure it's the done thing to ask a question and then answer it. In short, it'd be nice to be able to just dump a sort of combined question/answer/snippet, then let others comment as usual, shoot it down, like it, whatever. How do the rest of you approach this? • Getting dialogue snippets from text using regular expressions

  I'm trying to extract snippets of dialogue from a book text. For example, if I have the string "What's the matter with the flag?" inquired Captain MacWhirr. "Seems all right to me." Then I want to extract "What's the matter with the flag?" and "Seem's all right to me.". I found a regular expression to use here, which is "[^"\\]*(\\.[^"\\]*)*". This works great in Eclipse when I'm doing a Ctrl+F find regex on my book .txt file, but when I run the following code: String regex = "\"[^\"\\\\]*(\\\\.[^\"\\\\]*)*\""; String bookText = "\"What's the matter with the flag?\" inquired Captain MacWhirr. \"Seems all right to me.\""; Pattern p = Pattern.compile(regex); Matcher m = p.matcher(bookText); if(m.find()) System.out.println(m.group(1)); The only thing that prints is null. So am I not converting the regex into a Java string properly? Do I need to take into account the fact that Java Strings have a \" for the double quotes?

I couldn't find anything on building your own surround snippets either (just other kinds of snippets). I am actually running Resharper too, but it doesn't seem to have this functionality either (or I haven't figured how to activate it). We have a coding standard of including even a single line of code after an if or else in curly braces, so if I could just make Resharper do that refactor automatically that would be even better!

I am looking for: Tags User accounts (I want to be able to see all of my snippets on a single page) syntax highlighting versioning - myself or others should be able to edit my snippets to improve them\ straightforward UI with minimal advertising if any Does anyone know of a solution which meets these requirements? • Are licenses relevant for small code snippets?

  When I'm about to write a short algorithm, I first check in the base class library I'm using whether the algorithm is implemented in it. If not, I often do a quick google search to see if someone has done it before (which is the case, 19 times out of 20). Most of the time, I find the exact code I need. Sometimes it's clear what license applies to the source code, sometimes not. It may be GPL, LGPL, BSD or whatever. Sometimes people have posted a code snippet on some random forum which solves my problem. It's clear to me that I can't reuse the code (copy/paste it into my code) without caring about the license if the code is in some way substantial. What is not clear to me is whether I can copy a code snippet containing 5 lines or so without doing a license violation. Can I copy/paste a 5-line code snippet without caring about the license? What about one-liner? What about 10 lines? Where do I draw the line (no pun intended)? My second problem is that if I have found a 10-line code snippet which does exactly what I need, but feel that I cannot copy it because it's GPL-licensed and my software isn't, I have already memorized how to implement it so when I go around implementing the same functionality, my code is almost identical to the GPL licensed code I saw a few minutes ago. (In other words, the code was copied to my brain and my brain after that copied it into my source code).

• Best way to show code snippets in word?

  Does anyone know a good way to display code in Microsoft Word documents? I have tried to include code as regular text which looks awful and gets in the way when editing regular text. I have also tried inserting objects, a WordPad document and Text Box, into the document then putting the code inside those objects. The code looks much better and is easier to avoid while editing the rest of the text. However, these objects can only span one page which makes editing a nightmare when several pages of code need to be added. Lastly, I know that there are much better editors/formats that have no problem handling this but I am stuck working with MS word.

  Not quite sure whether I'm using the right terminology here, but Netbeans has a very nice feature where e.g. if you start typing for it will offer to write a code fragment looping over an array or list, basing it on the name and type of an array or list variable actually in scope. If more than one such variable is in scope it will guess, sometimes correctly and sometimes not. Is there a way to aim this feature at the correct array/list variable?

• How to use SSRS to retrieve HTML snippets with embedded images the easy way

  I have a web-app that retrieves reports from our SSRS server dynamically - we hit a URL and out pops some HTML4.0 which I stuff into a div for the user to view. I recently tried adding a report that has an embedded image (in the RDL itself) and the image doesn't make it through. What does make it through is an IMG SRC reference back to the SSRS box but we do not allow end users to hit the SSRS box directly... users query the web-app and the web-app interacts with the SSRS service. There is an option to render in MHTML (note that we typically use rs:command=RenderHTML with rs:format=HTML4.0) - the blob returned appears to be valid MIME but does not seem friendly for stuffing into a DIV... am I missing something obvious? My next step is to parse the MIME, swizzle the references and stuff the whole thing back into the page but I feel like this is the hardway. What is the easy way to retrieve HTML snippet reports out of SSRS with embedded images?
