  • Internet Working, Browsing Not.

    I have a very odd problem that I can't resolve. I am connected to the internet, but my browsing doesn't work. I don't mean a web browser - I mean browsing. Firefox, Chrome, Curl all fail to successfully connect to an HTTP address. However existing connections, e.g. to mail in Outlook (Exchange Server and also IMAP server) continue to work. Also, the internet is on, I can confirm both from my machine (other ports / connections) as well as from any other computer connected to the same network. Additionally, it appears to be HTTP, not simple a port issue as HTTP over port 8443 (Tortoise SVN if you must know - running over HTTP not over SVN) also fails. I am using Windows Vista SP2 (build 6002). It seems to "creep up" in that after running the computer for a few hours it will fail. (No found way to systematically reproduce the problem.) Additionally, it seems to be more prone on days where the internet connection is flaky already (not sure why the internet is flaky, just is, lot's of failed browsing requests and have to retry/reload often). What I have tried (when the problem arises) - none have yielded any resolution: Resetting the network connection (dis-connect, re-connect) Disable/re-enable the network adapter Double-checked the ip settings Double-checked the HOSTS file. Note: DNS continues to work (both new and cached responses to DNS queries). (Thanks for the suggestion Daniel and antenore.) Checked the routing tables (ip4 only as ipv6 is beyond my understanding) resetting all involved hardware (routers and modems) Close and reopen browsers Looked for malware interference: Run HijackThis Looked for suspicious processes using SysInternals procexp. Looked for explorer hijacks, lsa provider interference, winsock provider interference using SysInternals Autoruns. Run a complete anti-virus scan. Reviewed the output of a netstat -onab to see if there were stuck ports open or unusual processes running somewhere The only thing that works is to do a full reboot. That works 100% of the time to restore browsing. What else can I try to nail down the problem?

  • Very High CPU usage (100%) from just browsing the Web

    I tested on Firefox and Chromioum. Im at 100% while loading pages which causes them to load slow and when I dont have a application running Im at 40% CPU (At least) Everything is slow basically. Im also already on Ubuntu Classic so im not using Unity. Should I go to 10.04? is that more stable? On windows this wasnt an issue. I have a Dual Boot with XP and a 2.4Ghz Intel Celeron with 768MB RAM and an Nvidia 6200 Graphics card. I heard 10.04 was the most stable. any suggestions?

  • Slow on browsing web, but normal when using apt-get

    I have a problem with my fresh instalation of Ubuntu 11.10. The problem happen when i start up my browser and accessing website such google, askubuntu.com, facebook and other sites. frustate on the situation i try watch the progress in system monitor. the result from monitor shows that there is no data transfer when i try to accessing the page. firstly, i assume that it is the trouble from my ISP or my home connection. But it is not. When i try pinging google it shows transaction between my computer and the network but still null from browser. Then i tried to test the aptitude and it was work fine but still the browser won't recieve any packet from the internet. Here is the detail of my tools : Laptop : Toshiba Satellite e205 (network card atheros) Operating System : Ubuntu 11.04 dual booted with Win7 Browser : Mozilla Firefox comes up with the Ubuntu 11.10 installation Chrome : Last version (just yesterday install it) Thank You before :) [this question posted via win]

This connection is distributed from the server several sub-networks / subnets as follows: Faculty: 172.33....../ 255.255.0.0 Administration: 172.34......./255.255.255.0 Students: 172.35...../255.255.216.0 A student has a laptop with a fixed IP address 172.35.23.123 / 255.255.216.0 where the IP address is on the ethernet port. The gateways for internet access are 172.31.1.1 and 172.31.1.2. Further the student has a wireless port which is inaccessible in the hostel area. The OS of the student is Ubuntu 12.10. The student in the possession of an android phone on which he wishes to install specific software and therefore wishes to activate the internet therein. The student has already attempted the Wireless hotspot solution which works for 12.04 but has not been successful.   • Get phone number of (via mobile networks) browsing mobile device

    I recently figured out, that the web site of my phone provider (mobile) mysteriously identifies me and automatically logs me into my account when I'm accessing with my android phone, as if it knew my phone number. (I used several browsers. When I'm using the phone as WLAN hotspot and access the same site from another device that doesn't happen.) How does my phone provider do that? On the one hand, as a programmer, I'd like to be able to do that too, but on the other hand, as a user, I'm kind of scared. What information do they have, such that they (believe they) are able to identify me just by my device? I hope this question isn't completely inappropriate for this site; feel free to add better tags — it's hard to find the right ones without knowing the Webmasters site at all.

  • Lots of Internet browsing issues, all browsers

    Before the upgrade, everything was working fine. Now, however, I can connect to the Internet but a lot of stuff fails, and the weirdest thing is that it happens with Firefox, Chromium and Opera. Some of the things that fail: I can't log in to Stack Overflow, after entering user/pass it loads for a long time on Firefox and throws Error 408 (browser request timed out) on Chromium and Opera I can't log in to Hotmail, similar symptoms I can login to Facebook, but when I try to write a comment, or just post something in my wall, it stays loading for a long time, and then fails The first two issues seem to be related to secure pages, and the second one is another issue altogether, I believe. However, they all happen with all browsers, which is really weird. Talking about weird: I connect using a Huawei SmartAX MT 810 USB modem, which cost me blood and tears to get it working under Ubuntu. I ordered an ethernet modem/router with my ISP, and I'm still waiting, but this issue intrigues me anyway. Has anyone experienced this kind of problems? I Googled around, but couldn't find a similar case.

    I usually do my work in Google Chrome (v36.0.1985.143), private browsing enabled. I use Firefox to browse Stack Exchange, in normal mode so that all my logins are persisted. Sometimes I accidentally open an SE question in Chrome, so I copy-paste the URL to Firefox and get on reading. I left the SE tab in Chrome open, and up-voted a question in Firefox. Normally, you immediately see other users' voting activity via socket event emitting (possibly Socket.IO, I don't know SE's back-end). I noticed that in my Chrome tab, I didn't see the upvote that I had cast in Firefox. I had to refresh to be able to see the vote count change. So, as the title of the question states: does private browsing prevent socket events?

    I have had this problem for a couple of years, probably due to the fact that all my settings get transferred when I log into Chrome: Most videos on the net play fine using Chrome, but on certain site none of the videos will play. This is not due to wrong codecs or something, because opening the same video using Chrome's Private Browsing Mode will play it just fine. Since most (all?) extensions are disabled when using Private Browsing Mode, I guessed the problem had to be found in my extensions, so I disabled all and also disabled developer mode.   • Ubuntu: Is there a good tabbed PDF viewer?

    Is there a good non-bloated PDF viewer for (Ubuntu) Linux that supports tabs? I don't want to use Acrobat Reader because it is slow and takes much memory, and my computer isn't the fastest. I know the alternative readers evince and foxit, but they don't support opening different PDF files in tabs. (foxit has that feature on Windows, but the Linux version 1.1, which I just tried, doesn't have it.) For evince, I know many people would like this functionality, but they get ridiculed by Ubuntu people (see here), who say that tabs are the task of a window manager. If that is the case, how can I put all evince windows into one in GNOME?

    It's about html/css/javascript menu ;) I am looking for unified solution to hide extra tabs of horizontal/tabbed menu when it overflows it's container. The initial idea plagiarized from firefox tabs workflow, i.e. when you have too much tabs it will wrap extra ones into collapsible dropdown button "List all tabs". I am thinking to play with overflow:auto in conjunction with javascript, but is there anything like this already implemented or maybe some better idea? Thanks.

  • Web browsing through SSH tunnel gets stuck/clogged

    I use tools like Tunnelier to log into my home Tomato router through SSH, and then use it as a proxy for web browsing, tunnel for Remote Desktop/VNC, etc. Most days it works great, but some days every page I try to view gets stuck, like the tunnel is clogged. I load a web page and it seems to be loading, then stops, with the little loading icon spinning and nothing happening. I refresh the page, I reboot the router, I reboot the other computers on my home network and turn off any bandwidth-hogging services on them, I've turned on QoS on the router to prioritize SSH. I don't understand what's getting stuck. Rebooting or disconnecting/reconnecting the SSH tunnel improves responsiveness for a minute, but then it gets clogged again. It also seems to help if I don't do anything on the tunnel for a few minutes, then it will be responsive for a bit and then get clogged again. Trying to open a terminal console from Tunnelier is also unresponsive, so it's not just a web browsing problem. Likewise, connecting to http://192.168.1.1 in the browser (to the router's web config through its own tunnel) is also slow/laggy/halting. The realtime bandwidth reported by the router is nowhere near my DSL connection's limits, though it does show big spikes during the laggy times, and the connection is responsive when it shows low bandwidths. How do I troubleshoot something like this?

What keywords should I be using to search Google? Are there any resources that help me do this? Most of the solutions are just to encrypt communication between the server to a machine. It does not act like an internet gateway, etc.

  • Cisco VPN stops Windows 7 Browsing

    My browsing and other 'internet' activity (dropbox,digsby etc) halts when I connect to my office VPN using Cisco Systems VPN client Version 5.0.04.0300 on my Windows 7 Ultimate.The only option left for me at this time is to use my office proxy to enable the connection back. I tried doing the ucheck "Use default gateway on remote network" solution as mentioned on a previous post Windows 7 VPN stops web browser but I don't see that option on the properties of "Cisco systems VPN adapter" connection properties.   • Software for browsing/searching SQL Server transaction logs

    I'd like to know whether there is any piece of software that will allow the browsing/searching of SQL Server transaction logs (any version). We've previously used Lumigent Log Explorer against SQL Server 2000 which fulfilled our need, but the product no longer exists and Lumigent's closest replacement doesn't appear to support SQL 2008 (according to the data sheet). I've discovered something called ApexSQL Audit which may fit the bill, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of it, how it compares with Log Explorer, and whether there are any good alternatives out there. Thanks :)
