• How to view files from host? (running inside VMWare Fusion)

  I have just finished moving my development server into a Ubuntu 10.04 Server VM in VMWare Fusion 3. I have all of my mysql and tomcat stuff running and am now trying to connect to my actual site files which are stored on my mac under /{User Root}/Workspace/ColdFusion/. I know that normally you should be able to setup a shared folder in VMWare and find it under /mnt/hgfs/{Share Name}, but I can't find it. I am not sure if I have to manually mount it or what.

• VMware ESXi 4.1 snapshot of server 2008R2 machine generates 2 indentical snapshots

  I have 2 VMs that are failing to get veeam backups, and it appears that the culprit is vmware snapshots. We are running Vsphere ESXi 4.1 build 320092, we have multiple server 2008R2 machines that take snapshots fine, but when with these two VMs when I take a snapshot I get 2 identical snapshots a few seconds apart. The snapshot manager only shows 1 snapshot, but there are 2 files 1 number off, that are identical sizes. There is only one disk on each VM, so that isn't the problem. Has anyone seen this behavior before and know how to fix it? • qemu-img: Could not open $FILE

  I received a single-file VMDK from a vendor that has a virtual appliance for a particular product I'm interested in evaluating. We run a KVM solution (Proxmox) so I tried converting the file but on that system qemu-img blows up. (I was able to convert (multipart) VMDK files from bitnami without error.) So I figured I'll just yum install qemu-img on a RHEL 6.3 VM and do it there. But despite the fact that I can file the file just fine when I run qemu-img on it I get this error that it can't open the file: [root@host dir]# file 1.vmdk 1.vmdk: VMware4 disk image [root@host dir]# qemu-img info 1.vmdk qemu-img: Could not open 'vmdk' I've seen some other people post on the interwebs that they've had this problem but none of them seem to have a resolution. Does anyone have any ideas? I have checked the MD5SUM already. EDIT1: [root@host dir]# qemu-img info -f vmdk 1.vmdk qemu-img: Could not open '1.vmdk' EDIT2: Ran strace per suggestion. • Hide annoying VMware hint "To release input, press Ctrl+Alt"

  I'm running VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 7 x64. In the guest OS (also Windows 7 x64) I have VMWare Tools installed, but the VMWare Tools service is disabled. I run the VM in full screen mode and the VMWare toolbar at the top often displays this tooltip: To release input, press Ctrl+Alt This tooltip obscures a part of the VM (often the menu of a program I'm using) and it's annoying as hell. Going out of full screen mode and into it again gets rid of it, but only until I mouse over that toolbar and then it reappears! How do I get rid of it, once and for all? I tried adding hints.hideAll = "TRUE" to the .vmx file for the VM and to preferences.ini and neither of those helped.

  I'm using VMWare Server 2.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2. Sometimes after restarting the host machine, the VMWare host agent service won't start due to an error. This is the error messages from Event Viewer: [Service control manager] Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the VMware Host Agent service to connect. [Service control manager] The VMware Host Agent service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. I've set the service to automatically restart after subsequent failure using services.msc (using a 10 min. delay), but it still won't start. Only starting the service manually seems to work. Has anyone experienced this before? What workarounds or fixes are there?

• How to control admission policy in vmware HA?

  Simple question, I have 3 hosts running 4.1 Essentials Plus with vmware HA. I tried to create several virtual machines that filled 90% of each server's memory capacity. I know that vmware has really sophisticated memory management within virtual machines, but I do not understand how the vCenter can allow me even to power on the virtual machines that exceed the critical memory level, when the host failover can be still handled. Is it due to the fact that virtual machines does not use the memory, so that it is still considered as free, so virtual machines can be powered on ? But what would happen if all VMs would be really using the RAM before the host failure - they could not be migrated to other hosts after the failure. The default behaviour in XenServer is that, it automatically calculates the maximum memory level that can be used within the cluster so that the host failure is still protected. Vmware does the same thing ? The admission policy is enabled. Vmware HA enabled.

• VMWare steals IP addresses

  I'm having a peculiar problem, that I think I have narrowed down to VMware. For the past one year, every once in a while we lose internet connection and not all users (about 10 users) go down at the same time, its usually one-by-one. First someone will call me and say "Internet is down" and then we would go reset the router and modem and switch and it would be working again for a while, then go down again without any pattern or replicatable sequence. We'd go repeat the steps again to get everyone in the office running again. We called our Internet Service Provider and they constantly say, We see your modem and we see your router and from thier end everything is OK. we replaced our router and switch and modem, twice! Last friday, it dawned upon me, that everytime we turn on a VMware machine, this sequence of taking everyone down starts, which also explains the message that my users get for "IP Conflict Found" So we do alot of VMware testing and lo and behold, it takes my Internet down. My Yahoo and Gtalk would continue working but www is down when the VMware machines are started. I do use bridged networking to all the VMware machines, but I dont know what else to set it at. now, sorry for this long rambling but anyone have any clue on how to stop this? thanks IA

• VMWare shared folder out of sync

  After booting the guest system, the shared folders are in sync and all works well. But as soon, as I make a change to one of the files on my host system (Windows 7), the file on the guest system (Ubuntu) looses its last characters and still has the old version. So the actual change is not synced. However the version on the guest gets truncated. If I delete the file on the host and create a new one with new content, everything is in sync again. It all started happening when I updated VMWare player 6.0.1. And its happening for my Ubuntu guests only (Redhat works fine). How can I tell VMware tools to force a sync on the shared folders? • VMWare Server :: VM set to 2gb RAM but vmware process shows 100mb physical, 1900mb virtual

  I've set up a VMWare instance to run CastIron Integration Appliance. I allocated 2gb of memory to the instance, assuming it would take this as physical memory (my server has 8gb total). When I view top however on the server, the vmware-vmx process has about 100m Resident memory and 1900m Virtual. Running CastIron it reports that the appliance often hits 50% memory usage. Does this mean I'm using 900mb of harddrive space as memory? I wanted VMWare to use 2gb of physical memory, no swap. Can anyone tell me how to achieve this? • VMware player suspends on screensaver

  I have this problem with my VMWare player. When my host operating system either goes into screen saver or I lock the work station with Windows Key + L. VMWare player pauses or halts everything. So when i come back to the computer and there is a background task working inside the virtual machine it does not progress until i've actualy loged back on. Is there any way to stop this behaviour with VMWare player and keep it running in the background even when the screen saver or the work station is locked? Version of VMWare is: 3.0.0 build-203739

• Running VMWare EXS(i) on Apple Xserve

  So we're running VMWare Esx(i) (I'm not completely sure which as I'm out of the office) running on Windows Server 2008. However it turns out the machine we're running it on has serious hardware limitations, most importantly it's restricted to 4gb of ram. We've since inherited a much more powerful server. The problem being the new server is an Apple Xserver running, I believe, Snow Leopard Server. My question is, can I run VMWare Exs(i) on Xserver, or an equivalent? I'm done some hardcore Googling and the best that I can find is that it's not supported, but it might work, but there are no guarantees (this has been stated many times on the VMWare forums by the VMWare support staff). But all these search results are years old, so I can't find any recent answers regarding this. Has anyone accomplished this?

  Hi all, Is there any way to increase the number of vmware.log files for a given VM (Vmware Server 1.0.4, host: SLES 10)? Problem is, that one of our VMs crashes every now and then, and I can only see the four log files vmware.log, vmware-0.log, vmware-1.log and vmware-2.log each of which contains records starting after the crash when trying to boot. • VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

  The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again. Disclaimer: The patch is "as-is" and the patcher is originally created by Artem S. Tashkinov, and later modified by An_tony. Please refer to the VMware forum in case of questions or problems. There are also patches available for older versions of VMware Player or Workstation.

  Hi. Exploring Vmware products/services and have a few questions. As I understand VM, you can use VMWare Workstation to create a VM of a target machine/box/OS. Let's call this VM, "foo". If I have 100 client PCs in my dept, and I want to install the VM (foo) on each client, and also manage the remote VM instances of (foo). How can I accompish this? Let's assume that the client machines are running Windows7, and have the vmplayer app installed on the box. I'm looking to do the following kinds of actions regarding the remote client machines: -Update the foo VM/image with new updated copies -Make sure that every VM "foo" has the same user, but a unique passwd -Monitor the traffic/status of each client VM "foo" oin each client -Start/Stop each client VN "foo" from the master console -Etc... Can this be accomplished? How would I do it, what services/products would I need? I've tried toalking to a few of the pre-sales guys in VMWare, and got nowhere, other than telling me to email my questions!! Looking at google shed more insight, but I still have questions. So, if you have detailed VMWare understanding, pointers to consultants, or resellers who can help, all pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks -tom

• VMware Fusion won't boot my Boot Camp partition

  I have a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook that I would ultimately like to convert to a VMware virtual machine image. I've installed VMware Fusion and tried to start up my Boot Camp install using the Boot Camp button on the initial welcome screen. It brings up the "VMware Fusion is preparing your Boot Camp partition to run as a virtual machine" dialog, but afterward it shows an error dialog with the following message: Boot Camp partition preprocessing failed. You may not be able to boot your Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. It then tries to boot the new VM, but it blue screens during the boot process. The info on the blue screen doesn't provide much in the way of help though. Running chkdsk has no effect. After searching around, some people recommended using VMware's stand-alone converter utility from within Windows to create an image, but the utility said it couldn't create an image because my disk uses a GUID Partition Table (GPT). I'm wondering if this is why it can't boot my BC partition from Fusion. Has anyone else run into this and found a fix?

  VMWare Server 2 install question here.* Straightforward question that would probably require a VMWare expert to pull apart, given that Google has been totally worthless on this. On a patched Windows XP machine, any attempt to install VMWare Server 2.0.1 results in failure, just prior to completion (progress bar is full but I can tell network adapter stuff hasn't been fired yet and most of the services haven't been instaled). The error: Error 25032. Failed to customize Windows logon process (). Please contact your administrator. Upon dismissing the error, you're treated to: Warning 25033. Failed to remove Windows logon customization (VMGINA.DLL). Please contact your administrator. Clicking "OK" rolls back your installation. Killing the installer and hoping that it somehow leaves a working install behind was also unproductive. *I hope install troubleshooting isn't outside the purview of serverfault, I'm typically an SO user.

• Isolating VMware virtual machines from the network

  I have: VMware Workstation 7 running on a Windows 7 box (with a single NIC), with multiple virtual machines running a range of OSs. The host box is connected to a WRT54G router running Tomato firmware. The router is acting as a wireless bridge to another WRT54G that's wired to my broadband modem. I can access the VMs externally via VNC using VMware's Remote Display. Over time I've had these running: a. Using NAT networking (single IP) with port forwarding on the router and a custom port in VMware for each VM. b. Using bridged networking with static IPs assigned to each VM via MAC address, and port forwarding on the router to each IP running with standard ports. Either way, the host box, and other physical machines on the network are accessible from the VMs. Is there a way to isolate the VMs from the rest of the network, but still maintain internet access and remote VNC to the VMs?

Between the storage servers (Fedora 14) is a drbd cluster (dual primary) and ocfs2 filesystem; also every server has a local partition with an ext4 filesystem, both are mounted via nfs on the esxi server. When I tried to copy a virtual machine (naturally it was powered off) from the ext4 partition to the ocfs2 partition, the vmdk total file size is different, but the md5sum is the same. On the ext4 partition: # ls -la total 28492228 -rw------- 1 root root 42949672960 Jan 14 14:46 disk-flat.vmdk # md5sum disk-flat.vmdk 0eaebe3138beb32f54ea5de6dfe5a987 On the ocfs2 partition: # ls -la total 13974660 -rw------- 1 root root 42949672960 Jan 14 16:16 disk-flat.vmdk # md5sum disk-flat.vmdk 0eaebe3138beb32f54ea5de6dfe5a987 When I power on the virtual machine from the ocfs2 partition it dosn't work. I have a windows on the virtual machine and it freez?s after the windows logo. From the ext4 partition the virtual machine workes. I tested with linux (created and installed on ext4 partition and then copied to the ocfs2) and the same problem appears. When I create a virtual machine directly from ocfs2 partition, there are no problems. I tried to copy via vSphere client, and I have the same problem. Any suggestions?

• "Updating VMware Tools for Linux" spins forever

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 inside VMware Player 3.1.4 inside Ubuntu 10.10 When first booting on the ISO image I was asked if I wanted to download the VMware Tools for Linux and I accepted. It downloaded for a few minutes, and then it has been "updating" for an hour already. Even shutting down the VM does not stop it. If I try to exit VMware, I am told "Cannot exit while still downloading. Cancel all downloads and try again." but the dialog's Cancel button is greyed out. Nothing special in vmware.log I ended up killink VMware. A few days after I restarted it, it asked about the VMware Tools again, I accepted again, and same problem...
