• Email Content creation | Proper design

- by Umesh Awasthi
Working on an E commerce application where we need to send so many email to customer like Registration email Forget Password Order placed There are many other emails that can be sent, I already have emailService in place which is responsible for sending email and It needs an Email object, Everything is working find, but I am struck at one point and not sure how best this can be done. We need to create content so as it can be passed to emailService and not sure how to design this. For example, in Customer registration, I have a customerFacade which is working between Controller and ServiceLayer, I just want to delegate this Email Content creation work away from Facade layer and to make it more flexible. Currently I am creating Registration email content inside customerFacade and some how I am not liking this way, since that means for each email, I need to create content in respective Facade. What is best way to go or current approach is fine enough?

• Wireless not working, no driver showing in the Additional Drivers window

- by edit lopez
I am a new user of Ubuntu. I have a Asus Q501L laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8, but I wanted to move from Windows and try something new, so I just decided to install Ubuntu without thinking to much about it. The problem I have is that I can't install the additional drivers. When I go to to Additional Drivers nothing appears, it just says: no proprietary drivers are in use and in small letters continues: a proprietary driver has private code that Ubuntu developers can't review and improve. security and others updates are dependent on drivers vendor.. I can't even use the wireless connection. I really don't know what to do. I tried to download the drivers from Asus, but when I tried to install them it said: an error occurred while loading the archive. Also I don't know the model of the PC wireless card. If there is something I can do to find out that please tell me. Thanks!

• What's the future of online gamedev. FLASH or UNITY?

- by Cpucpu
Currently, i develop for flash, not much ago i discovered unity, not yet played with it, but i have seen so far was cool. Here are my thoughts: Flash is more casual, start with cost less, in time and money. In unity you'd likely have to go more bussines-serious (real money). There are proven bussines models in flash, like adver-gaming, ads, micro-transactions. Have not seen much movement in this in Unity, too soon maybe. Flash is too heavy. By its nature(making games) Unity is way faster. Flash is 2d, doing something 3d with it turns weird and slow. Unity is natively 3d, not optimized for 2d though, it is likely feasible as well. I am overlooking the plug-in widespread, that gap will get closed over the time.

• Lenovo ThinkPad T400 and docking station

- by harry
Developer in me woke up this morning and asked me to fix this before Christmas. (As his Christmas gift). So, if I power on the laptop after docking it, everything works fine. But if I am working on it standalone and then try to dock it, I cannot get the display. Same way, if I undock it while working, I loose the display. Basically, I need to reboot for any docking/undocking dance to work. Questions: 1) What kind of information should I be looking for to understand the problem? 2) Where to find that information. After this, I can go and try to figure out what is going wrong.

• Error when setting Piwik analytics

- by bertran
I've uploaded the latest version of Piwik unto my web server, which is hosted by go daddy.com, on a linux hosting plan. I'm setting it up (accessing it from my browser as instructed) and I have the "Piwikinstallation" page open on step 3 (database set-up ) of 9. I don't know what to imput in the field "database server"... the default is the number 127.0.0.1 When I leave that input as is, and click "Next" leaving the gives the error: "Error when trying to connect to database server: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2013] Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111" and changing that input to "localhost" gives me another error: "Error when trying to connect to database server:SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)"

• Help comparing Cocos2d and Unity3d for this project.....

- by Omega
I will not go into details, but I would like to hear your opinions about this: Essentially, my project will be a 2d game, with lots of complex levels, where some might be simple and others might be a bit more deep, with physics, etc. We want to implement our very own online structure: logging in, leaderboards, achievements, friends etc with our own servers. This means no OpenFeint nor GameCenter at all. We expect this game to be very large in both graphics and audio. We wish to use in-app purchases. Now, we considered two options. Cocos2d and Unity3d. We need help deciding using the factors I mentioned before (networking, good performance even for a large game in terms of graphics and audio like this, in-app purchases, etc) which option would fit better this? Technically, both options can create 2d games. I'd like to hear your opinion.

• How can I unit test a class which requires a web service call?

- by Chris Cooper
I'm trying to test a class which calls some Hadoop web services. The code is pretty much of the form: method() { ...use Jersey client to create WebResource... ...make request... ...do something with response... } e.g. there is a create directory method, a create folder method etc. Given that the code is dealing with an external web service that I don't have control over, how can I unit test this? I could try and mock the web service client/responses but that breaks the guideline I've seen a lot recently: "Don't mock objects you don't own". I could set up a dummy web service implementation - would that still constitute a "unit test" or would it then be an integration test? Is it just not possible to unit test at this low a level - how would a TDD practitioner go about this?

• Implementation of instance testing in Java, C++, C#

- by Jake
For curiosity purposes as well as understanding what they entail in a program, I'm curious as to how instance testing (instanceof/is/using dynamic_cast in c++) works. I've tried to google it (particularly for java) but the only pages that come up are tutorials on how to use the operator. How do the implementations vary across those langauges? How do they treat classes with identical signatures? Also, it's been drilled into my head that using instance testing is a mark of bad design. Why exactly is this? When is that applicable, instanceof should still be used in methods like .equals() and such right? I was also thinking of this in the context of exception handling, again particularly in Java. When you have mutliple catch statements, how does that work? Is that instance testing or is it just resolved during compilation where each thrown exception would go to?

• Set Up Of Common Name Of SSL Certificate To Protect Plesk Panel

- by Cbomb
A PCI Compliance scanner is balking that the self signed SSL certificate protecting secure access to Plesk Panel contains a name mismatch between the location of the Plesk Panel and the name on the certificate, namely the self-signed cert's name is "Parallels" and the domain to reach Plesk is 'ip address:8443'. So I figured I would go ahead and get a free SSL certificate to try to fiddle with this error. But when I generated the certificate I used my server domain name as the site name when I generated the certificate. So if I visit 'domain name:8443' all is fine, no ssl warning. But if I visit 'ip address:8443' (which I believe is what the scanner does) I get the certificate name mismatch error, Digicert's ssl checker says that the certificate name should be the ip address. Can I even generate a certificate whose common name is the ip address? I am tempted to say I should just do what the PCI scanner accepts, but what is really the correct common name to use? Anybody run into this issue before?

• What are the cons of using DrawableGameComponent for every instance of a game object?

- by Kensai
I've read in many places that DrawableGameComponents should be saved for things like "levels" or some kind of managers instead of using them, for example, for characters or tiles (Like this guy says here). But I don't understand why this is so. I read this post and it made a lot of sense to me, but these are the minority. I usually wouldn't pay too much attention to things like these, but in this case I would like to know why the apparent majority believes this is not the way to go. Maybe I'm missing something.

• How can I create a 3D model in Java without using modeling software?

- by Galen Nare
I am a lightly experienced game developer and this is my first time trying 3D objects in Java for the first time. I have been recently creating and updating games using AWT, Swing, and Graphics, but I want to delve farther into Java. I have looked into Java3D, but it's not what I want. I want to use Images and then crop the Image and place the respective textures in their respective places. I already know how to do the cropping and 2D Image editing, but how do I go 3D?

• What options do individual have to fork a project?

- by skrco
Let's assume our example individual has an idea, engagement, ... to fork project. By project I mean any kind of software - thick client, web site, portal, service, driver, plc, ... - anything that can be programmed. Motto of question: What options do our example individual have to fork this project from the early beginning through getting collaborators and users to mature software? Here are the main subquestions: Sandbox phase: Where can he announce his idea and proposal and receive positive/negative critic and feedback? Development phase: Where can he build his team to work on this project? Yet deployed phase: Where can he schedule tasks, assign tickets and bugs to be solved? and the list can go on... What really interests me is the "sandbox phase question".

• After Installation Whole Disk Encryption? 12.04

- by Luke
I know some fragments of this question have been asked in previous posts and I have reviewed them - however I have a more thorough question... I did not choose to do whole disk encryption when I used the alternative installer to install my 12.04 distro. I thought that truecypt worked with linux on system drive (whole disk) encryption - but sadly found out it did not. I have totally tweaked and pimped out my installation and I do not want to have to go back and "install" to just get whole disk encryption. Any alternatives that anyone knows of? I don't want just /home... I want the whole system installation protected and made secure so that when I boot I get a password to unencrypt.

• When is an object oriented program truly object oriented?

- by Syed Aslam
Let me try to explain what I mean: Say, I present a list of objects and I need to get back a selected object by a user. The following are the classes I can think of right now: ListViewer Item App [Calling class] In case of a GUI application, usually click on a particular item is selection of the item and in case of a command line, some input, say an integer representing that item. Let us go with command line application here. A function lists all the items and waits for the choice of object, an integer. So here, I get the choice, is choice going to conceived as an object? And based on the choice, return back the object in the list. Does writing this program like the way explained above make it truly object oriented? If yes, how? If not, why? Or is the question itself wrong and I shouldn't be thinking along those lines?

• AI control for a ship with physics model

- by Petteri Hietavirta
I am looking for ideas how to implement following in 2D space. Unfortunately I don't know much about AI/path finding/autonomous control yet. Let's say this ship can move freely but it has mass and momentum. Also, external forces might affect it (explosions etc). The player can set a target for the ship at any time and it should reach that spot and stop. Without physics this would be simple, just point to the direction and go. But how to deal with existing momentum and then stopping on the spot? I don't want to modify ship's placement directly. edit: Just to make clear, the physics related math of the ship itself is not the problem.

• How do I learn Python from zero to web development? [closed]

- by Terence Ponce
I am looking into learning Python for web development. Assuming I already have some basic web development experience with Java (JSP/Servlets), I'm already familiar with web design (HTML, CSS, JS), basic programming concepts and that I am completely new to Python, how do I go about learning Python in a structured manner that will eventually lead me to web development with Python and Django? I'm not in a hurry to make web applications in Python so I really want to learn it thoroughly so as not to leave any gaps in my knowledge of the technologies involving web development in Python. Are there any books, resource or techniques to help me in my endeavor? In what order should I do/read them? UPDATE: When I say learning in a structured manner, I mean starting out from the basics then learning the advanced stuff without leaving some of the important details/features that Python has to offer. I want to know how to apply the things that I already know in programming to Python.

• Going home now :-)

- by Mike Dietrich
3 weeks of traveling through Asia and Australia - nearly 500 customers and partners in 8 workshops in Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shenzhen, Singapore, Melbourne, Perth and Manila. Great people in all places, many interesting discussions, several new reference prospects for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 - YOU should upgrade as well pretty soon :-) But now it's time to go home. We are a bit exhausted but we really enjoyed it talking to and with you. And I'd suppose we'll meet again the sooner or later. Thanks to everybody - and special thanks to the local colleagues and especially to Abe-san, Kota-san, Blair Layton and Shaheen Ismail for taking care on us, organizing our workshops and the whole setup!!!

• We Are SQLFamily

- by AllenMWhite
On Monday, Tom LaRock ( b /@sqlrockstar) presented his #MemeMonday topic as What #SQLFamily Means To Me . The #sqlfamily hash tag is a relatively new one, but is amazingly appropriate. I've been working with relational databases for almost 20 years, and for most of that time I've been the lone DBA. The only one to set things up, explain how things work, fix the problems, make it go faster, etc., etc., yadda, yadda, yadda. I enjoy being 'the guy', but at the same time it gets hard. What if I'm wrong?...(read more)

• Conways Game of Life C#

- by Darren Young
Hi, Not sure if this is the correct place for this question or SO - mods please move if necessary. I am going to have a go at creating GoL over the weekend as a little test project : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life I understand the algorithm, however I just wanted to check regarding the implementation, from maybe somebody that has tried it. Essentially, my first (basic) implementation, will be a static grid at a set speed. If I understand correctly, these are the steps I will need: Initial seed Create 2d array with initial set up Foreach iteration, create temporary array, calculating each cells new state based on the Game of Life algorithm Assign temp array to proper array. Redraw grid from proper array. My concerns are over speed. When I am populating the grid from the array, would it simply be a case of looping through the array, assigning on or off to each grid cell and then redraw the grid? Am I on the correct path?

• Planning an Event–SPS NYC

- by MOSSLover
I bet some of you were wondering why I am not going to any events for the most part in June and July (aside from volunteering at SPS Chicago). Well I basically have no life for the next 2 months. We are approaching the 11th hour of SharePoint Saturday New York City. The event is slated to have 350 to 400 attendees. This is second year in a row I’ve helped run it with Jason Gallicchio. It’s amazingly crazy how much effort this event requires versus Kansas City. It’s literally 2x the volume of attendees, speakers, and sponsors plus don’t even get me started about volunteers. So here is a bit of the break down… We have 30 volunteers+ that Tasha Scott from the Hampton Roads Area will be managing the day of the event to do things like timing the speakers, handing out food, making sure people don’t walk into the event that did not sign up until we get a count for fire code, registering people, watching the sharpees, watching the prizes, making sure attendees get to the right place, opening and closing the partition in the big room, moving chairs, moving furniture, etc…Then there is Jason, Greg, and I who will be making sure that the speakers, sponsors, and everything is going smoothly in the background. We need to make sure that everything is setup properly and in the right spot. We also need to make sure signs are printed, schedules are created, bags are stuffed with sponsor material. Plus we need to send out emails to sponsors reminding them to send us the right information to post on the site for charity sessions, send us boxes with material to stuff bags, and we need to make sure that Michael Lotter gets there information for invoicing. We also need to check that Michael has invoiced everyone and who has paid, because we can’t order anything for the event without money. Once people have paid we need to setup food orders, speaker and volunteer dinners, buy prizes, buy bags, buy speakers/volunteer/organizer shirts, etc…During this process we need all the abstracts from speakers, all the bios, pictures, shirt sizes, and other items so we can create schedules and order items. We also need to keep track of who is attending the dinner the night before for volunteers and speakers and make sure we don’t hit capacity. Then there is attendee tracking and making sure that we don’t hit too many attendees. We need to make sure that attendees know where to go and what to do. We have to make all kinds of random supply lists during this process and keep on track with a variety of lists and emails plus conference calls. All in all it’s a lot of work and I am trying to keep track of it all the top so that we don’t duplicate anything or miss anything. So basically all in all if you don’t see me around for another month don’t worry I do exist. Right now if you look at what I’m doing I am traveling every Monday morning and Thursday night back and forth to Washington DC from New Jersey. Every night I am working on organizational stuff for SharePoint Saturday New York City. Every Tuesday night we are running an event conference call. Every weekend I am either with family or my boyfriend and cat trying hard not to touch the event. So all my time is pretty much work, event, and family/boyfriend. I have 0 bandwidth for anything in the community. If you compound that with my severe allergy problems in DC and a doctor’s appointment every month plus a new med once a week I’m lucky I am still standing and walking. So basically once July 30th hits hopefully Jason Gallicchio, Greg Hurlman, and myself will be able to breathe a little easier. If I forget to do this thank you Greg and Jason. Thank you Tom Daly. Thank you Michael Lotter. Thank you Tasha Scott. Thank you Kevin Griffin. Thank you all the volunteers, speakers, sponsors, and attendees who will and have made this event a success. Hopefully, we have enough time until next year to regroup, recharge, and make the event grow bigger in a different venue. Awesome job everyone we sole out within 3 days of registration and we still have several weeks to go. Right now the waitlist is at 49 people with room to grow. If you attend the event thank all these guys I mentioned above for making it possible. It’s going to be awesome I know it but I probably won’t remember half of it due to the blur of things that we will all be taking care of the day of the event. Catch you all in the end of July/Early August where I will attempt to post something useful and clever and possibly while wearing a fez. • MP4 files show up but won't stream to xbox 360

- by Greg
I set up a basic media server to stream to my 360 using uShare. Here are the instructions I used: http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/howto-ubuntu-upnp-server-to-xbox-360/. I can stream avi files fine but I cannot stream mp4s. When I go to videos on the xbox, I can see all of the videos and folders but when I click play for an mp4 nothing happens. On my ubuntu desktop I can click on the mp4 file and it plays fine. And if I take that file, stick it on a thumb drive and plug it directly into the xbox the mp4 will play off the thumb drive. I'm lost for why it won't work through ushare. Any ideas?

• How do functional languages handle random numbers?

- by Electric Coffee
What I mean about that is that in nearly every tutorial I've read about functional languages, is that one of the great things about functions, is that if you call a function with the same parameters twice, you'll always end up with the same result. How on earth do you then make a function that takes a seed as a parameter, and then returns a random number based on that seed? I mean this would seem to go against one of the things that are so good about functions, right? Or am I completely missing something here?

• Should all new web projects build their backend based on xml/json result sets?

- by Blankman
If you were building a new Saas project, would it make sense to start with all of the backend services returning xml/json? Because these days you need to build for both the web and mobile devices, and having a backend that is build from the start to return xml and json, you are ready to go mobile (all services have the business logic, so you won't be repeating anything). Now the web would be MVC, so the controller would just be routing the request to your service backend, and converting the json or xml to html. The obviousl downside is that you have to build a backend, and then another web project that calls your backend. But this also goes to you favor as it forces you to seperate your concerns, and not leak business logic in your controller/view layer. Thoughts?
