How to create (via installer script) a task that will install my bash script so it runs on DE startup?

I've been reading for the last couple hours about Upstart, .xinitrc, .xsessions, rc.local, /etc/init.d/, /etc/xdg/autostart, @reboot in crontab and so many other things that I'm totally confused! Here is my bash script. It should start/run after the desktop environment is started and it should continue to run at all times until logout/shutdown. It should start again on reboot. Any time the DE is running, it should run. #!/bin/bash while true; do if [[ -s ~/.updateNotification.txt ]]; then read MSG < ~/.updateNotification.txt kdialog --title 'The software has been updated' --msgbox "$MSG" cat /dev/null > ~/.updateNotification.txt fi sleep 3600 done exit 0 I know zero about using Upstart, but I understand that Upstart is one way to handle this. I'll consider other approaches but most of the things I've been reading about are too complex for me. Furthermore, I can't figure out which approach will meet my requirements (which I'll detail below). There are two steps in my question: How to automatically start the script above, as described above. How to "install" that Upstart task via a bash script (i.e., my "installer"). I assume (or hope) that step 2 is almost trivial once I understand step 1. I have to support all flavors of Ubuntu desktops. Therefore, the kdialog call above will be replaced. I'm considering easybashgui for this. (Or I could use zenity on gnome DE's.) My requirements are: The setup process (installation) must be done via a bash script. I cannot use the GUI method described in the Ubuntu doc AddingProgramToSessionStartup, for example. I must be able to script/automate the setup (installing) process using bash. Currently, it is as simple as having the bash installer script copy the above script into /home/$USER/.kde/Autostart/ The setup process must be universal across Ubuntu derivatives including Unity and KDE and gnome desktops. The same setup script (installer) should run on Linux Mint, Kubuntu, Xbuntu (basically any flavor of Ubuntu and major derivatives such as Linux Mint). For example, we cannot continue to put a script file in /home/$USER/.kde/Autostart/ because that exists only on KDE. The above script should work for each of the limited flavors we use. Hence our interest in using easybashgui instead of kdialog or zenity. See below. The installed monitoring script should only be started after the desktop is started since it will display a GUI message to the user if the update is found. The monitoring script (above) should run without root privileges, of course. But the installer (bash script) can be run as root. I'm not a real developer or a sysadmin. This is a part time volunteer thing for me, so it needs to be easy/simple. I can write bash scripts and I can program a little, but I know nothing about Upstart or systemd, for example. And, unfortunately, my job doesn't give me time to become an expert on init systems or much of anything else related to development and sysadmin. So I have to stick with simple solutions. I recently installed a package from a ppa on Ubuntu 12.04 beta, but apparently it didn't work out, and now it is giving me errors at every update or install I make, even after deactivating the ppa from my sources. Changing Domain Name DNS to Redirect web traffic to one server, and leave mail to original server

Hi there, Ok, quite the idiot with DNS.. apart from the basics. I have a domain name hosted with a domain registrar. It seems to have full DNS control (i.e. ability to view/edit A Records, Mail etc..) We have recently setup a server at Rackspace which hosts the new website The original/existing server (where the old website still is and Mail) is on another shared hosting companies server I went to the domain name registrar, and checked out the DNS management as follows: click here to view the DNS screenshot So obviously the A Record is pointing to the actual server where the website/mail is I figure, and the CNAME is pointing (alias?) to the website url. So my question is this: If I want the web traffic portion to go to the Rackspace/new server, but keep the mail going to where it is now, what do I have to change? Also, should I even change this info at the domain registrar? the rackspace server account has full DNS which seems to suggest I can point to their nameservers and then re-direct the MX (Mail) traffic to where the mail server is? Sorry if that was a bit confusing.. obviously in need of DNS training ;) Any help very appreciated. David.

Want to set up the folder structure as follows: Client 1 Name -- Matter 1 (i.e. setting up corporation) -- Matter 2 (i.e. divorce) -- Matter 3 (i.e. setting up trust) Client 2 Name -- Matter 1 Client 3 Name -- Matter 1 and so on. But the attorneys prefer navigating a folder structure, more based on what case type: Civil -- Client 1 Name (i.e. Smythe) -- Client 2 Name (i.e. Jones) -- Client 3 Name (i.e. Johson) -- Landlord/Tenant -- Client 1 Name (i.e. Jones) -- Client 2 Name (i.e. Johson) -- Class Action Suits -- Suit 1 -- Suit 2 Personal Injury -- Client 1 Name -- Client 2 Name -- Client 3 Name Criminal -- Client 1 Name (i.e. Smythe) I'd like to know if it's possible to set up the server with the first folder structure (it's more organized and easier to employ scripts), while having the second folder structure available for users who find it easier to deal with the same types of cases grouped together.

Ihave insatlled ubuntu 10.4 on my compuer with 6 cd drives. Now initiallyi had window server 2008 and i had to install marvel raid sata controller and then my window detected all 6 drives. Now ubuntu is detecting only 3 drives and i have not found marvell drivers for ubuntu bt i have drives for window 2008. Do entries in local 'hosts' files override both forward and reverse name lookups?

If I have the following entries in a hosts file: 192.168.100.1 bugs 192.168.100.2 daffy.example.com 192.168.100.3 elmer.example.com. Will IP-name resolution attempts by local utilies (I assume using 'gethostbyaddr' or the Windows equivalent) honour these entries? Is this behaviour configurable? How does it vary between operating systems? Does it matter whether the 'hosts' file entries are fully qualified or not? EDIT: In response to Russell, my test Linux system is running RHEL 4. My /etc/nsswitch.conf contains the following 'hosts' line: hosts: files dns nis If I ping any of my hosts by name (e.g. bugs, daffy), the forward resolution works correctly. If I traceroute any of them by IP address, the reverse lookup functions as expected. However, if I ping them by IP, ping doesn't appear to resolve their host names. My understanding was that Linux ping would always attempt to resolve IPs to names unless instructed otherwise. Why would traceroute be able to handle reverse lookups in hosts files, but ping not?

How to replace the domain name in a Wordpress database?

I have a Wordpress database which was installed in a development environment... thus, all references to the site itself have a fixed IP address (say 192.168.16.2). Now, I have to migrate that database to a new Wordpress installation on a hosting. The problem is that the SQL dump contains a lot of references to the IP address, and I have to replace it with: my_domain.com. I could use sed or some other command to change the that from the command line, the problem is that there are a lot of configuration data which uses JSON. So what? Well, as you know, JSON arrays uses things like: s:4: to know how many chars an element has, and thus, if I just replace the IP with the domain name, the configuration files will get corrupted. I used an app for Windows some years ago that allows to change values in a database and takes care of the JSON arrays. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the app... so the question is: do you know any app that allows me to do what I want?

processing of Group Policy failed only on 2008 Servers and Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller

Spent last 3 months doing a upgrade from 2003 domain to a 2008R2 domain. our last DC was rebuilt (5 total) and brought up on line. After it was put on line we have some 2008 and 2008R2 servers (10 now) getting these errors in the event logs. ERRORS Description: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the user name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).\ Can duplicate this if we drop to command prompt and run GPUPDATE manually When our users attempt to do a \directory\shared access to shared drive on an affected server get this error.– “THERE ARE CURRETLY NO LOGON SERVER AVAIALBE TO SERICE THE LOGON REQUEST. This is only affecting the 2008 OS and it is a random set of abotu 10 servers out of some 30 with this OS. The Services on the machines are running Ok and login. Able to log in with domain/user to the consoles and via RDP. WE can log onto an affected machine, and can get to the \domainname\sysvol and can see the GPO's Have checked the replication topology of the domain and it states all servers can replicate with no errrors. We went back to the last DC, demoted it, removed DNS and then removed it from the domain and waited 24 hours and issue still persist. Picked one server, removed it from domain, reboooted, and added back to domain with no problems, but still has this behavior. bottom line is we have some servers that the domain will not let any UDP/client server apps or GPO's process ,but the tcp related items seeme to work fine, http, tcp calls, sql and oracle dbs's connect and process. Any inputs on some possible reasons for this issue and fixes. It is only affecting the 2008 servers on a 2008R2 domain.

Folder name in sidebar is changed, how to get it back?

My OSX is Simplified Chinese, so the user folders in finder's sidebar is like this: AirDrop ???? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? These stand for AirDrop, Applications, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Musics and Pictures. However, now with an accident, my "Downloads" folders in sidebar is changed to its original english name, and I don't why, so my sidebar is now look like: AirDrop ???? ?? ?? Downloads ?? ?? ?? I know do symbol link to these folders would cause such case but I cannot find any symbol links to my ~/Downloads folder. So is there any way to get the Chinese name back? it looks so weired and dirty. I have a time machine backup 3 days ago, but I have quite a lot modifications to my user folder these 3 days, so time machine may not be a good choice.

The HTML5 standard enables you to add custom attributes to an HTML document just as long as the custom attributes start with the prefix data-. So you can add custom attributes to an HTML5 document with names like data-stephen, data-funky, or data-rover-dog-is-hungry and your document will validate. The WinJS.Binding.processAll() method is called to perform the actual binding (Don’t confuse WinJS.Binding.processAll() and WinJS.UI.processAll() – these are different methods). The first parameter passed to the processAll() method represents the root element for the binding. In other words, binding happens on this element and its child elements. If you provide the value null, then binding happens on the entire body of the document (document.body). The second parameter represents the data context. This is the object that has the properties which are displayed with the data-win-bind attributes. In the code above, the product object is passed as the data context parameter. Another word for data context is view model. Creating Complex View Models In the previous section, we used the data-win-bind attribute to display the properties of a simple object: a single product. However, you can use binding with more complex view models including view models which represent multiple objects. For example, the view model in the following default.js file represents both a customer and a product object. Creating Calculated Properties You might want to modify a property before displaying the property. For example, you might want to format the product price property before displaying the property. You don’t want to display the raw product price “80000”. Instead, you want to display the formatted price “$80,000”. You also might need to combine multiple properties. For example, you might need to display the customer full name by combining the values of the customer first and last name properties. In these situations, it is tempting to call a function when performing binding. For example, you could create a function named fullName() which concatenates the customer first and last name. Unfortunately, the WinJS library does not support the following syntax: <span data-win-bind=”innerText:fullName()”></span> Instead, in these situations, you should create a new property in your view model that has a getter. This approach makes sense when the formatting logic is specific to a particular view model. If, on the other hand, you need to perform the same type of formatting for multiple view models then it makes more sense to create a converter function. A converter function is a function which you can apply whenever you are using the data-win-bind attribute. Imagine, for example, that you want to create a general function for displaying dates. You always want to display dates using a short format such as 12/25/1988. The following JavaScript file – named converters.js – contains a shortDate() converter: (function (WinJS) { var shortDate = WinJS.Binding.converter(function (date) { return date.getMonth() + 1 + "/" + date.getDate() + "/" + date.getFullYear(); }); // Export shortDate WinJS.Namespace.define("MyApp.Converters", { shortDate: shortDate }); })(WinJS); The file above uses the Module Pattern, a pattern which is used through the WinJS library. This function converts a JavaScript date object into a short date string such as 12/1/1988. The converter function is created with the help of the WinJS.Binding.converter() method. This method takes a normal function and converts it into a converter function. Finally, the shortDate() converter is added to the MyApp.Converters namespace. You can call the shortDate() function by calling MyApp.Converters.shortDate(). The default.js file contains the customer object that we want to bind. Notice that the customer object has a firstName, lastName, and birthday property. Using data-win-bindsource Normally, you pass the view model (the data context) which you want to use with the data-win-bind attributes in a page by passing the view model to the WinJS.Binding.processAll() method like this: WinJS.Binding.processAll(null, viewModel); As an alternative, you can specify the view model declaratively in your markup by using the data-win-datasource attribute. If an element has a data-win-bindsource attribute then all of the child elements of that element are affected. The data-win-bind attributes of all of the child elements are bound to the data source represented by the data-win-bindsource attribute. How do I install on an UEFI Asus 1215b netbook?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 on a UEFI netbook Asus 1215b using an USB stick. I created a fat32 efi partition of 100MB, 2GB swap, and 2 ext4 partitions (for root (/ ) and /home, respectively). While installing, Ubuntu switches to CLI and starts running efibootmgr. After a few commands (sadly I don't have a screen grab), it stops displaying text but it's still running judging by the HDD led. Then, there's a weird graphic glitch and the screen turns off (HDD led still indicating activity). Finally, it just stops, but doesn't turn off. Not even a hard reboot works (holding down the power button a few secs). I have to plug the netbook off and remove the battery. After that, it still doesn't boot Ubuntu... Anyway, what can I do? I'm considering following the footsteps here and here. error initializing multiple configuration files

Hi, during initialization startup on tomcat, the configurations are: 1) a webapp/WEB-INF/web.xml that imports yummy-servlet.xml in contextConfigLocation (although i'm aware that is not required since the servlet-name is yummy it will try to load yummy-servlet.xml by default) 2) a webapp/WEB-INF/yummy-servlet.xml that imports a spring/applicationContext-hibernate.xml file 3) a webapp/WEB-INF/spring/applicationContext-hibernate.xml that imports a applicationContext-dataSource.xml file 4) a webapp/WEB-INF/spring/applicationContext-dataSource.xml i'm getting errors about Failed to import bean definitions from relative location, but the stack trace is not very explicit about exactly what is the problem, i've been looking at these since yesterday and i really don't see I'm trying to validate user input in php. This code will check if the values are null or not. If it is null, this will require the user to input the values that are null. When all the text boxes in the html form that came before this. This code will show the submit button, and that submit button will save the inputted data into the mysql database. How do I install ant on OS X Mavericks?

After upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, ant is no longer on my path. After googling, I found this article, which suggested using a user's custom formula for brew. How to install a new TFS checkin policy on a TFS 2010 server?

Hi, We've recently upgraded our TFS server to TFS 2010 from 2008. We've been researching a couple new add-on checkin policies we want to install. The only problem is that all documentation I can find on adding new policies to the server appears to be specific to TFS 2008 or earlier. Those steps involve adding new keys in the registry which do not exist on our 2010 TFS server. Does anybody know where the process to install new checkin policies on a TFS 2010 server so they can be applied to Team Projects is documented? Thanks!

How is it that during extraction of a zip, I get two files of the same name in the same path?

I'm extracting a zip (self-extracting, but that probably doesn't matter) and for a few files I'm getting a dialog asking me if I want to replace a file that was already extracted with a file that's just about to be extracted. At first glance I didn't understand how a zip could contain the same file in the same place more than once. I then browsed to the file in question using 7zip (or any tool) and found this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46007162@N03/5278220416/ The difference is in the block number. What's actually happening here?
