  • Weird random application hang problem

    I am trying to understand an application hang problem that started up lately on my windows xp system. The system runs fine for days (sometimes) without ever shutting down or putting it to sleep, but the problem first shows up as one of the apps hanging. The application's UI stops responding or one or more background threads hang, so even though the GUI is responding, it is not doing anything (e.g., in VirtualDub's case, the UI responds fine, but the job doesn't progress and I won't even be able to abort it). The weirdness part comes from the fact that if I try to kill such an app, the program that is used to kill it goes into the same mode (i.e, that hangs instead of the original). E.g., if I use Process Explorer to kill it, the original program exits, but procexp now hangs. If I use another instance of procexp to kill the one that is hanging, this repeats, so there is always at least one program hanging in that state. This is not specific to procexp, I tried the native task manager and even the "End Process" dialog from windows explorer that shows up when you try to close a non-responsive GUI (in this case, the explorer itself hangs). The only program that didn't hang after the kill, is the command line taskkill. However, in this case, explorer hangs instead of taskkill. Also, once this problem starts manifesting, it soon ends up freezing the whole system to the extent that even a clean shutdown is not possible, so I have learned to reboot as soon as I notice this problem, however this is very inconvenient, as I often have encoding batch jobs going on which can't continue the job after the restart. The longer I leave the system running after seeing this problem, the more applications get into this state. I have tried to do a repair install but that didn't make any difference. I also uninstalled some of the newer installs, but again no difference. I tried to search online, but got inundating results for generic hang and crash related problems. Though I couldn't notice any pattern, it seems as though the problem is more frequent if I have some video encoding going on at that time. I had the system running for days when I only do browsing and internet audio/video chat before I decide to start encoding something and the problem starts to show up. I am not too sure if it is the encoding program that first hangs, though I almost always noticed that too hanging (like the VirtualDub stopping to make progress). I also had to reboot 3 times on one day when I was heavily experimenting with encoding. I would appreciate any help in narrowing down this problem and save me the trouble of reinstalling. I don't especially want to loose my gotd installs.

  • .htaccess working on remote server but does not work on localhost. Getting 404 errors on localhost

    MY PROBLEM: When I visit localhost the site does not work. It shows some text from the site but it seems the server can not locate any other files. Here is a snippet of the errors from firebug: "NetworkError: 404 Not Found - localhost/css/popup.css" "NetworkError: 404 Not Found - localhost/css/style.css" "NetworkError: 404 Not Found - localhost/css/player.css" "NetworkError: 404 Not Found - localhost/css/ui-lightness/jquery-ui-1.8.11.custom.css" "NetworkError: 404 Not Found - localhost/js/jquery.js" It seems my server is looking for the files in the wrong places. For example, localhost/css/popup.css is actually located at localhost/app/webroot/css/popup.css. I have my site setup on a remote server with the same exact configurations and it works perfectly fine. I am just having this issue trying to run the site on my laptop at localhost. I edited my VirtualHosts file DocumentRoot and to /home/user/public_html/site.com/public/app/webroot/ and this reduces some errors but I feel that this is wrong and sort of hacking it since I didn't use these setting on my production server which works. The last note I want to make is that the website uses dynamic URLs. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. For example, on the production server the URLS are: site.com/#hello/12321. HERES WHAT I AM WORKING WITH: I have a LAMP server setup on my laptop which runs on Ubuntu 11.10. I could get it to run on 127.0.0.1, but it seems that no network packets ever leave the current computer that it is installed on. It tests for known security holes in a network.   • Unusual Apache->Tomcat caching issue.

    Right now, I have an Apache setup sitting in front of Tomcat to handle caching. This setup has been given to an external service to manage, and since the transition, I've noticed odd behavior. Specifically, when I request a swf file from the web server, I hit the Apache cache (good), but occasionally I'll receive a truncated file. Once I receive this truncated file, the cache will NOT refresh until I manually delete the cache and let the swf pull down from tomcat again. The external service claims that the configuration is fine, but I don't see any way this could be happening aside from improper configuration. Now, there are two apache and two tomcat servers under a load balancer, and occasionally one apache cache will break while another does not (leading to 50% of all requests getting bad, truncated data). Where should I start looking to debug this issue? What could POSSIBLY be causing this odd behavior?     How can I make command aliases in DOS like I would with bash? I found out about doskey in a forum thread, so I can do something like: doskey ls=dir /b ...and now the command ls acts a little more like ls on Unix. (I type ls so often in DOS, it isn't funny.) But how do I get this to stick between sessions? It goes away the next time I open cmd.exe. (Is there something like .bash_profile?)

    My main process(main.exe) initilaized COM library and created a thread which creates a new process(p1.exe) this new process is again initializing COM library and after making all references as zero unintialized COM here.. the unintailezed COM in the main process (i.e main.exe) also.... When i run p1.exe individually it is successful.. but it is crashing when i create a process for p1.exe from main.exe

    Hello, I'm looking for a software similiar to Windows Desktop Search or Google Desktop, that can also display results from our Intranet search engine in the same manner it displays regular results (files/emails/etc.). So far I managed to add Intranet search capabilities to Windows Desktop Search, but it doesn't show the results in the programs UI, but requires the user to press a "Search Intranet" button that opens the browser. Would be happy to hear any suggestions. Thank you.

    I'm working on re-arranging a number of the shell folders in windows 7 to utilize Dropbox to keep a set of machines in sync. I'd like to create a .reg file which I can use to update the locations of these folders rather than manually changing them from the UI, but I don't want to rely on the path to the home folder being the same each time. So my question is, is it possible to replace the REG_SZ values in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders with REG_EXPAND_SZ values specifying an offset from %HOME% instead of an exact path?

  • Multithread http downloader with webui [closed]

    I looking for software similar to JDownloader or PyLoad. JD is pretty good but use heavy Java and for now have very weak web interface. PyLoad is awesome, include simple but powerful web-UI but downloading 10 files (10 threads each, so summary it's 100 connections running at around 8MB/s all) consume a lot of cpu - it's whole core for me. Do you know any lightweight alternatives? Aria2c is good for console but I failed to find any good webui, official one is good but after adding more files almost crashes Chrome :)
