• Rewriting usort function because of fatal error (PHP bug)

  The two following usort functions throw fatal error Base lambda function for closure not found in our productive environment (PHP 5.4). This seems to be a known PHP bug that should be fixed by now (https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=52144), but it still occurs for us. Anyway, we unfortunately don't have time to figure out what's wrong with our PHP configurations etc. We would like to rewrite these two functions without the use of anonymous functions, so that the error doesn't occur anymore. Ordering of a multidimensional array ($array) by value of key "position": usort($array, function($a, $b) { return $a['position'] - $b['position']; }); Ordering of a multidimensional array ($array) according to the order of a second array ($position_order): usort($array, function($a, $b) use($position_order) { return (isset($position_order[$a['ftid']]) ? ($position_order[$a['ftid']] - $position_order[$b['ftid']]) : 1); }); Especially the latter causes some headache, as we don't know how to pass the "outside" array $position_order.

• Mono 2.10.5 Runtime error on Ubuntu 11.10

  I've install mono-runtime via apt in order to run my Mono console application on Ubuntu via SSH. However, when I run the command mono myapp.exe, It exits, with no message, and my program does nothing. If I throw the -v switch to Mono, such as mono -v myapp.exe, I get about 10k lines of output (as expected, -v is verbose), with the first few lines being: converting method System.OutOfMemoryException:.ctor (string) Method System.OutOfMemoryException:.ctor (string) emitted at 0xb7052c28 to 0xb7052c4b (code length 35) [myapp.exe] converting method (wrapper runtime-invoke) <Module>:runtime_invoke_void__this___object (object,intptr,intptr,intptr) Method (wrapper runtime-invoke) <Module>:runtime_invoke_void__this___object (object,intptr,intptr,intptr) emitted at 0xb7052c68 to 0xb7052cf6 (code length 142) [myapp.exe] converting method System.SystemException:.ctor (string) I read this as the runtime throwing an OutOfMemory exception, but the machine is under no intense load, has plenty of available RAM, and is running nothing other that system processes. I've removed and reinstalled Mono countless times, and have even run the executable on other machines perfectly fine. Am I missing something completely obvious here?

• What should I read to improve my C++ style

  I was developing for quite long time already on C/C++ (mostly C, which makes style poorer). So, I know how to use it. However, quite often I stuck with style decisions like: - should I return error code here, throw exceptions, return error through a parameter - should I have all this stuff in constructor or should I create separate init function for that. and so on. Any solutions WILL work. However, each of them has cons and pros, which I know and most importantly which I don't know. It would be very nice to read something regarding overall C++ development style, coding practices and so forth. What do you recommend?

• Problems debugging using Cygwin gdb in Eclipse CDT(Helios)

  I am trying to debug an application using Eclipse CDT and cygwin gdb and I am facing a problem if my code calls Sleep(), it looks like whenever a sleep is encountered in the code the debugger seems to go in an infinite loop(I meant it never terminates or hit a breakpoint after sleep). On pressing pause the code is stuck on one of the thread on sigint::interrupt. Even my debugger console windows throw these error in the console output: [New thread 5968.0x1f98] Error: dll starting at 0x774a0000 not found. Error: dll starting at 0x775c0000 not found. [New thread 5968.0x19e8] Any idea what are these errors about? It would be helpful if someone can help me out here as I am new to eclipse and I am used to using VS so it has made be lazy to be honest and expect things to work out of box. Here are more details if required Windows 7 x64 bit. Eclipse 3.6 Helios with CDT plug-in compiled from the CVS head. Cygwin latest from website, I think it is 1.71

  Hello all As the title says, I want to truncate user-input text string based on the width and height of a designated container. My specification is to truncate the string, display some message like Read More at the end and when user clicks on it, the text slides down. UPDATE: Ah! Forgot one thing.   I have an old c++ application that needs to be modified to work with windows 7. Problem is in creating a new folder and saving a file in that folder. This folder should be created in c:\program files\myApp\data\newFolder. If I run application as administrator than the folder is created, otherwise "Access is denied" error is thrown. My question is following: Is there an option to make changes to the code so that the folder can be created in "program files" nad that files can be saved in this folder? Sometimes there is more than one inspection in a month, sometimes there is no inspection. However, the report that is desired by the clients requires that I have EXACTLY ONE record per month for the time frame they request the report. They understand the data issues and have stated that if there is more than one inspection in a month to take the latest one. If the is not an inspection for that month, go back in time untill you find one and use that one. I will now say what I have tried. Although if someone else has a better approach, I am perfectly willing to throw away what I have done and do it differently... STEP 1: create a query that removes the duplicates from the data. Ie. only one record per equip_id for each month/year, keeping the latest one. (done successfully) STEP 2: create a table of the date ranges the client wants the report for. (This is done dynamically at runtime) This table two field, Month and Year. So if the client wants a report from FEb 2008 to March 2010 the table would look like: Month Year 2 2008 3 2008 . . . 12 2008 1 2009 . . . 12 2009 1 2010 2 2010 3 2010 I then left joined this table with my query from step 1. So now I have a record for every month and every year that they want the report for, with nulls(or blanks) or sometimes 0s (not sure why, access is weird, but sometiems they are nulls and sumtimes they are 0s...) for the runtimes that are not avaiable. I don't particurally like this solution, but ill do it if i have to. (this is also done successfully) STEP 3: Fill in the missing runtime values. This I HAVE NOT done successfully. Note that if the request range for the report is feb 2008 to march 2010 and the oldest record for a particular equip_id is say june 2008, it is O.K. for the runtimes to be null (or zeros) for feb - may 2008. I am working with the following query for this step: SELECT equip_id as e_id,year,month, (select top 1 runhours from qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month a where a.equip_id = e_id order by year,month) FROM qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month where runhours is null or runhours = 0; UNION SELECT equip_id, year, month, runhours FROM qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month WHERE .runhours Is Not Null And runhours <> 0 However I clearly can't check the a.equip_id = e_id ... so i don't have anyway to make sure i'm looking at the correct equip_id SUMMARY: So like i said i'm willing to throw away any part, or all of what I tried. • Subtracting two lists in Python

  In Python, How can one subtract two non-unique, unordered lists? Say we have a = [0,1,2,1,0] and b = [0, 1, 1] I'd like to do something like c = a - b and have c be [2, 0] or [0, 2] order doesn't matter to me. This should throw an exception if a does not contain all elements in b. Note this is different from sets! I'm not interested in finding the difference of the sets of elements in a and b, I'm interested in the difference between the actual collections of elements in a and b. I can probably work this out with a for loop, looking up the first element of b in a and then removing the element from b and from a, etc. But this doesn't appeal to me, I'd like to do this with list comprehension in a nice and easy way. Is this possible?

Am I right in assuming that I don't need a check after making the tortoise take a step forward? As I see it, the tortoise can never reach the end of the list before the hare (contrary to the fable). Any other ways to simplify/beautify this code?

• Implementing clone on a LinkedList

  I am trying to implement a clone() method on a DoubleLinkedList. Now, the problem is that implementing it by "the convention" is a lot more troublesome than just creating a new DoubleLinkedList and filling it with all the elements of my current DoubleLinkedList. Is there any inconvenient I am not seeing when doing that? • How to make IIS wait for WCF service gets ready?

  I have a WCF service hosted in IIS 7. It takes some minutes until this service finish to load its data and ready for external calls. Data loads in internal thread. The problem is that from IIS point the service is ready just after it was activated (by some call), and it process a request without waiting for data to be loaded. Is it possible to tell IIS that the service is still loading and make this service unavailable for requests? No problem if such request will throw an exception.

  I am learning JPA and have confusion in the @SequenceGenerator annotation. Upto my understanding, it automatically assigns a value to numeric identity fields/properties of an entity. Q1. Does this sequence generator make use of the database's increasing numeric value generating capability or generates the number on his own? Q2. If JPA uses database auto increement feauture, then will it work with datastores that don't have auto increement feature? Q3. If JPA generate numeric value on his own, then how the JPA implementation knows which value to generate next? Does it consult with the database first to see what value was stored last so as to generate the value (last + 1). ====================================================================================== Q4. • jQuery textbox required validation based on another text box having text

  Pretty basic question, however, I am very new to jQuery and javascript in general. What I am trying to do is require a textbox based on if another text box has any text in it, for instance require the old password if a user enters a new password into a textbox. Is there an easy way to get the required: "#NewPassword:NotBlank" to work?

  What's the best practise when adapting C-style functions which return a true/false to Java? Here's a simple method to illustrate where the problem lies. public static boolean fileNameEndsWithExtension( String filename, String fileExtension) { return filename.endsWith( fileExtension ); } Note that there's probably a more elegant way of filtering files (feel free to comment on this). Anyway, if filename is a null value, does one: Return a false if filename is null? If so, how does one go about distinguishing between the case where filename is null and the case where the String or file name doesn't end with a given file extension? Change the return type to the wrapper class Boolean which allows a null value. Throw an Exception and force the programmer to make sure that a null value is never passed to the method? Use another solution?

• iPhone SDK: How to store the time each word was typed?

  My problem is twofold: 1) I'm trying to determine an eloquent way to allow the user to type into a UITextView and store the time each word was typed into an array. The time will be a float which starts at 0 when the user begins to type. 2) Conversely, I'd like the user to be able to tap on a word in the UITextView and display the time that word was typed (displaying in an NSLog() is fine). Considerations that may throw a wrench into a possible approach -- what if the user goes back to the top of the text and starts typing or to the middle of the text? Even a suggested approach without code would be appreciated, because right now I'm drawing a blank.

  I have a Traversable, and I want to make it into a Java Iterator. My problem is that I want everything to be lazily done. If I do .toIterator on the traversable, it eagerly produces the result, copies it into a List, and returns an iterator over the List. I'm sure I'm missing something simple here... • LINQ to SQL for tables across databases. Or View?

  I have a Message table and a User table. Both are in separate databases. There is a userID in the Message table that is used to join to the User table to find things like userName. How can I create this in LINQ to SQL? I can't seem to do a cross database join. Should I create a View in the database and use that instead? Will that work? What will happen to CRUD against it? E.g. if I delete a message - surely it won't delete the user? I'd imagine it would throw an error. What to do? I can't move the tables into the same database!

• Anonymous iterators blocks in Clojure?

  I am using clojure.contrib.sql to fetch some records from an SQLite database. (defn read-all-foo [] (let [sql "select * from foo"] (with-connection *db* (with-query-results res [sql] (into [] res))))) Now, I don't really want to realize the whole sequence before returning from the function (i.e. I want to keep it lazy), but if I return res directly or wrap it some kind of lazy wrapper (for example I want to make a certain map transformation on result sequence), SQL bindings will be gone after I return, so realizing the sequence will throw an error. How can I enclose the whole function in a closure and return a kind of anonymous iterator block (like yield in C# or Python)? Or is there another way to return a lazy sequence from this function?

  So I'm debugging an app in preperation for its app so release, and I enabled a universal breakpoint for "All Exceptions". • Android: heavy traffic on server causes app to force close

  I have developed an app to communicate with my own server and published it. However, sometimes the app force closes. I know there is no bug in the code because the app works properly most of the time, but sometimes it is waiting for an answer from the server forever. I think this is due to the fact that so many people are using the app, and the app refreshes every 1 second or so, so this heavy traffic causes the server to take a large amount of time to respond. So how do you take care of such a use case? should I have a use case where if the server does not respond after some time you just stop the app and throw a message saying that the server is not responding or something like that?

• What FIX implementation do you recommend for use with .NET

  I am reviewing implementation choices for FIX when using .NET. A few obvious choices come to mind, but I want to know if there are other options, better choices or if we've made the same decision as a lot of you. QuickFIX - Stable, C++ implementation - so you've got unmanaged code to interop with. FIX4NET - C# implementation - seems to have some gaps in its implementation. DIY - Chime in here if you've made your own FIX engine Let me throw in some caveats here. I'm not looking for sub 100 microsecond processing. Performance is a requirement, but not so much that it's driving my decisions. A solid product that is stable, performs well and is flexible enough to deal with vendor specific dialects is the sweet spot. The more we can do in .NET the better.
