• What's a good place to unregister an observer from the notification center?

  When I add an observer to the default notification center, where would I unregister that? Example: I have a UIView subclass which lives inside a view controller. That subclass is an observer for the FooBarNotification. If this notification is posted, that view will get it. But now, the view controller decides to throw away the view. Is the best place the -dealloc method of the view itself? Are there any rules like memory management rules? For example: Must I unregister an observer where I registered it? i.e. the view registers itself in it's init method, so it should unregister itself in it's -dealloc method? (not talking about push notifications, but NSNotificationCenter)

  Is there any way to throw errors or warnings in a korn shell script to prevent the use of unset variables ? Let's assume I have a temporary folder that I want to remove. TEMP_FILES_DIR='/app/myapp/tmp' rm -Rf $TEMP_FILE_DIR #notice the misspelling How to prevent this kind of mistakes before they actually happen? I know the script should check for file existence and empty string before attempting to remove, this is just a silly example to illustrate a mistake that could have been avoided with some warnings. I don't know if this feature exists in ksh. If it does exist, how do you turn it on?

• WPF: Best method for printing paginated datagrids

  Boy did I get an education looking into this. I guess I've been spoiled by Powerbuilder, which has fantastic functionality for this out of the box. Does anyone seriously write custom documentpaginator objects to handle reporting needs for their LOB apps? I want to be able to print "for free" and not have to code like crazy just to take whats on the screen and throw it on paper. How are people doing this? Does anyone have a recommended 3rd party for allowing printing of largish datagrids? Thanks

• Model's method not being recognized when called

  I'm using ruby on rails 2.3.2 and also using the acts_as_taggable_on puglin. That generated me two db tables: tags and taggings. As I didn't need anything more from those, I didn't create a Tag model, for example. Now the project is more mature, I need to create some methods for tags, so I created a Tag model with some methods in it. The model looks something like this: class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base def self.get_parent parent = Tag.find(self.parent_id) return parent end end When I call it from a controller, it won't find the method. This is the code: tag = Tag.find(tag_id) the_parent = tag.get_parent This will throw an error saying: undefined method `get_parent' for #<Tag id: 13, name: "Historia", parent_id: 12> I don't know what's wrong. Any help will be appreciated.

• Creating parameterized type object using annonymous class

  This might be a stupid question, but I just saw a question asking how to create a Type variable for a generic type. The consensus seemed to be that you should have a dummy method returning that type, and then use reflection to get it (in this case he wanted Map<String, String>). Something like this : public Map<String, String> dummy() { throw new Error(); } Type mapStringString = Class.forName("ThisClass").getMethod("dummy").getGenericReturnType(); My question is, not having used reflection that much, couldn't you just do something like: Type mapStringString = new ParameterizedType() { public Type getRawType() { return Map.class; } public Type getOwnerType() { return null; } public Type[] getActualTypeArguments() { return new Type[] { String.class, String.class }; } }; Would this work? If not, why not? And what are some of the dangers/problems if it does (besides being able to return some Type like Integer<String> which is obviously not possible.

  Hi all, Consider the following code (written with Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0) using System; namespace DumpTester { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { int test = new Random().Next(); Console.WriteLine(test + new Random().Next()); Test(); } private static void Test() { throw new Exception(); } } } When running outside of Visual Studio you get this nice window of Microsoft Windows 7 that it is looking for a solution. Obviously, since this is my app, there is none. At that point I create a full dump file of my application with for example Process Explorer. I then open that dmp file from its location and try to debug. But whatever I try, it can't find the location of the source symbols. I tried putting the pdb next to the dump but it just doesn't find it. What am I doing wrong?

  I have a site that allows users to create a saying and then users "like" those sayings on Facebook. http://www.likeylikey.net/ I got a friend to throw up this simple code in less than 2 hours so it's basic. He knows little to nothing regarding the Open Graph API. Basically, I want to know how I can programmatically store how many times a page has been liked so I can list a "Top 10, most liked pages" list. Right now the index shows a list of all created pages and now I just wish to show the 10 most liked but I need a way of pulling that information from Facebook. Is this possible?

• Prevent duplicate rows with all non-unique columns (only with MySQL)?

  Ho do I prevent a duplicate row from being created in a table with two columns, neither of which are unique? And can this be done using MySQL only, or does it require checks with my PHP script? • How to rate a connect four game situation in java

  Hey, I am trying to write a simple AI for a "Get four" game. The basic game principles are done, so I can throw in coins of different color, and they stack on each other and fill a 2D Array and so on and so forth. until now this is what the method looks like: public int insert(int x, int color) //0 = empty, 1=player1 2=player2" X is the horizontal coordinate, as the y coordinate is determined by how many stones are in the array already, I think the idea is obvious. Now the problem is I have to rate specific game situations, so find how many new pairs, triplets and possible 4 in a row I can get in a specific situation to then give each situation a specific value. With these values I can setup a "Game tree" to then decide which move would be best next (later on implementing Alpha-Beta-Pruning). My current problem is that I can't think of an efficient way to implement a rating of the current game situation in a java method.   I have a Book model in my Rails application, with various properties (aka columns in the book db table). One of these properties is "ranking". Recently, may app has started to throw NoMethodError: undefined method 'include?' for nil:NilClass for the following code: def some_method(book, another_arg) return book.ranking unless book.ranking.blank? ... end However, it's not consistent. The vast majority of the time, accessing book.ranking works -- the error is thrown maybe 2-4% of the time. If I change the code to book[:ranking] or book['ranking'] instead of book.ranking, it works 100% of the time. Any ideas?

• How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

  With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies

• Anonymous iterator blocks in Clojure?

  I am using clojure.contrib.sql to fetch some records from an SQLite database. (defn read-all-foo [] (with-connection *db* (with-query-results res ["select * from foo"] (into [] res)))) Now, I don't really want to realize the whole sequence before returning from the function (i.e. I want to keep it lazy), but if I return res directly or wrap it some kind of lazy wrapper (for example I want to make a certain map transformation on result sequence), SQL-related bindings will be reset and connection will be closed after I return, so realizing the sequence will throw an exception. How can I enclose the whole function in a closure and return a kind of anonymous iterator block (like yield in C# or Python)? Or is there another way to return a lazy sequence from this function?

• Best way to force Spring shutdown from a bean?

  My application uses a Spring DefaultMessageListenerContainer to process incoming messages. The main method of the app already registers a shutdown hook. Question is this: what is the best way to force the application context to shut down? If I throw a RuntimeException in the message listener, it is handled by the container, and not passed on. Is calling System.exit acceptable? Do I pass along the ApplicationContext to every class that needs to shut down, so I can call close() on it?

QTY is a derived column | Position | QTY -------------------- 1 Clerk 2 2 Mgr 2 Here's what I'm not having luck with: SELECT Position, Count(position) AS 'QTY' FROM tblemployee Where ('QTY' != 1) GROUP BY Position I know that my Position is set up as varchar(255) Count produces a integer data and my where clasue is accurate so that leads me to believe that that Count() is jamming me up. Please throw up an example so I can reference later. Thanks for the help!

  Can I somehow force a derived class to always call the overridden methods base? public class BaseClass { public virtual void Update() { if(condition) { throw new Exception("..."); // Prevent derived method to be called } } } And then in a derived class : public override void Update() { base.Update(); // Forced call // Do any work } I've searched and found a suggestion to use a non-virtual Update() but also a protected virtual UpdateEx(). I just simply need to access one of array elements by calling propertyName=string[0]. Current version (1.8.3) does not support indexed properties. If you look into their code you will find in class PropertyUtilsBean in method getPropertyOfMapBean: if (resolver.isIndexed(propertyName) || resolver.isMapped(propertyName)) { throw new IllegalArgumentException( "Indexed or mapped properties are not supported on" + " objects of type Map: " + propertyName); } way too bad:-( Have any of you any tip how to do it somehow differently?

• Why does casting a NaN to a long yield a valid result?

  In the sample code below I am dividing by zero which when I step through it with the debugger the (dividend / divisor) yields an Infinity or NaN (if the divisor is zero). When I cast this result to a long I get a valid result, usually something like -9223372036854775808. Why is this cast valid? Why doesn't it stop executing (throw an exception for example) rather than assign an arbitrary value? double divisor = 0; double dividend = 7; long result = (long)(dividend / divisor);

  Hey guys, I was wondering what happens when a program processes an if-structure with multiple conditions. I have an idea, but i'm not sure about it. I'll give an example : List<string> myTestList = null; if (myTestList != null && myTestList.Count > 0) { //process } The list is null. When processing the if, will it go from left to right exiting the if as soon as one condition is false? I've tried it and seems to throw no errors, so i assume the above explains it, but i'm not sure. Thanks in advance.

• git: better way for git revert without additional reverted commit

  I have a commit in a remote+local branch and I want to throw that commit out of the history and put some of them into an own branch. Basically, right now I have: D---E---F---G master And I want: E---G topic / D master That should be both in my local and in the (there is only one, called origin) remote repository. Which is the cleanest way to get that? Also, there are also other people who have cloned that repo and who have checked out the master branch. If I would do such a change in the remote repo, would 'git pull' work for them to get also to the same state?

• Why Use java.lang.reflect.Array For Anything Other Than Array Creation?

  Java Class java.lang.reflect.Array provides a set of tools for creating an array dynamically. However in addition to that it has a whole set of methods for accessing (get, set, and length) an array. I don't understand the point of this, since you can (and presumably would) cast your dynamically generated array as an array upon creation, which means you can use the normal array access (bracket notation) functionality. In fact, looking at the source code you can see that is all the class does, cast the array, and throw an exception if the cast fails. So what's the point / usefulness of all of these extra methods?
