Is there a tool around that would produce a diagram showing existing tables and their relationships given a connection to a database or by any other means?
This is for SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.
How do you write a query where only a select number of rows are returned with either the highest or lowest column value.
i.e. A report with the 5 highest salaried employees?
For some reason it takes 7 seconds to open a connection to a sql server database for the firt time, subsequent connections takes a second. any idea what could be the reason?
I'm using C# and asp.net
I am using Castle ActiveRecord as my ORM. When I try to store unicode strings, I get question marks instead.
Saving unicode strings worked perfectly when I was using mysql, but when I recently switch to SQL Server it broke. How should I go about fixing this?
I have this varchar format as time accumulation and i want to convert it to an integer to do a SUM and get the total time for a group. The fist part which may be 1, 2, 3, 4 or even five digits represent the accumulation of Hours and then seperated by a colon. then come the second part which is accumulation of minutes and last accumulation of seconds (2 digits each). How to convert this to integer in one query if possile.
Have a lot of unnecessary results using contains() method in my query. Don't tell me to use like or something else. It is hardcoded and couldn't be changed.
I'm doing a little digging and looking for a explanation on how SQL server evaluates MIN(Varchar).
I found this remark in BOL: MIN finds the lowest value in the collating sequence defined in the underlying database
So if I have a table that has one row with the following values:
Data
AA
AB
AC
Doing a SELECT MIN(DATA) would return back AA. I just want to understand the why behind this and understand the BOL a little better.
Thanks!
Hi,
I have recently discovered the tablediff utility of SQL Server 2005.
I have 2 instances of the same database each on a different server.
Is it possible to compare all tables using tablediff without having to replicate the same command while only changing the table name?
For example, compare table1 on server1 with table1 on server2 then compare table2 on server1 with table2 on server2, until all tables have been compared.
I have a table called Categories which contains category_Id and parent_category_Id, so each category can has a child and the child can has a child and so on (it is dynamic).
So if i have category A and category A has child B and child B has child C and child C has child D. I want to get all the child tree of A using SQL so when I give this query the id of A its result will be the ids of A's child which is B,C & D.....any ideas.
Thanks in regards,
Are there any formal techniques for refactoring SQL similar to this list here that is for code?
I am currently working on a massive query for a particular report and I'm sure there's plenty of scope for refactoring here which I'm just stumbling through myself bit by bit.
Hi,
I just noticed that if I have an identity column in a table, when I insert new rows MS SQL 2008 is automatically filling up the sequence if there are discontinuity. I mean, if in my identity column I have 1,2,5,6 if I insert other two rows in the table the system puts automatically 3,7 in the identity column.
Do you know how to control this behavior?
THANKS
I have been playing around with creation of pdf documents for a project that I'm working on. I would like to store the generated pdf document in a SQL database and then later be able to retrieve this pdf as well.
What are some suggestions for doing this? Can the document be stored in the database without physically creating the document on the server?
For Data Explorer I would like to add support for a Batch separator.
So for example if users type in:
select 'GO' go select 1 as go
Go
select 100
I would like to return the three result sets.
Its clear that I need some sort of parser here, my hope is that this is a solved problem and I can just plug it in. (writing a full T-SQL parser is not something I would like to do)
What component / demo code could achieve splitting this batch into its 3 parts?
Any experiences on how to document Entity Framework 4 based Database projects?
There is the Document and Summary properties on the Entities, but if we want to regenerate the model from the database at some point, it will be lost!
Is there some way to map documentation data inside SQL to the Entities in the EDMX file so it is safe.
Suggestions of other best practices? Ideally I want to be able to augo generate html/helpfile documentation from the DB when we deploy.
Why is the ( ) mandatory in the SQL statement
select * from gifts INNER JOIN sentgifts using (giftID);
? The ( ) usually is for specifying grouping of something. But in this case, are we supposed to be able to use 2 or more field names... in the example above, it can be all clear that it is 1 field, is it just that the parser is not made to bypass the ( ) when it is all clear? (such as in the language Ruby).
I have an application which intensively uses DB (SQL Server).
As it must have high performance I would like to know the fastest way to insert record into DB.Fastest from the standpoint of execution time.
What should I use ?
As I know the fastest way is to create stored procedure and to call it from code (ADO.NET).
Please let me know is there any better way or may be there are is some other practices to increase performance.
Im using Native SQL from ABAP language. The query to get data is something like this
SELECT COUNT(ROWID)
FROM <SCHEMANAME>.<TABLENAME>;@<DATABASENAME>
INTO :localvariable
I want to somehow set the schemaname and database name as default so that i do not need to use them in the SELECTs later. Then i can only use the table name in the SELECT.
thanks !!
I have the following Transact SQLquery using a union.
I need some pointers as to how this would look in LINQ i.e some examples
wouldbe nice or if anyone can recommend a good tutorial on UNIONS in linq.
select top 10 Barcode, sum(ItemDiscountUnion.AmountTaken) from
(SELECT d.Barcode,SUM(AmountTaken) AmountTaken
FROM [Aggregation].[dbo].[DiscountPromotion] d
GROUP BY d.Barcode
UNION ALL
SELECT i.Barcode,SUM(AmountTaken) AmountTaken
FROM [Aggregation].[dbo].ItemSaleTransaction i
group by i.Barcode) ItemDiscountUnion
group by Barcode
Is it possible to write a plugin or a form for SQL Server Enterprise Manager version 8? I'm doing some simple queries all the time to admin the databases. So wondering if I could write something for it.
Situation:
Running a report on SQL Server Reporting Services
When I do a Preview of the Report all my charts look fine. No problems.
When I run a subscription for the report, the chart look different. Like completely different legends are gone etc.
Any ideas what the cause would be?
BTW the charts are Dundas Charts.

I am building a system using NServiceBus and my DataLayer is using Linq 2 SQL.
The system is made up of 2 services.
Service1 receives messages from NSB.
It will query Table1 in my database
and inserts a record into Table1
If a certain condition is met a new NSB message is sent to the 2nd service
Service2 will update records also in Table1 when it receives messages from Service1 and it does some other non database related work.
Service2 is a long running process.
The problem I am having is the moment Service2 updates a record in Table1, the table is locked. The lock seems to be in place until Service2 has completed all it is processing.
i.e. The lock is not released after my datacontext is disposed.
This causes the query in Service1 to timeout.
Once Service2 completes processing, Service1 resumes processing again without problem.
So for example Service1 code may look like:
int x =0;
using (DataContext db = new DataContext())
{
x = (from dp in db.Table1 select dp).Count(); // this line will timeout while service2 is processing
Table1 t = new Table1();
t.Data = "test";
db.Table1.InsertOnSubmit(t);
db.SubmitChanges();
}
if(x % 50 == 0)
CallService2();
The code in service2 may look like:
using (DataContext db = new DataContext())
{
Table1 t = db.Table1.Where(t => t.id == myId);
t.Data = "updated";
db.SubmitChanges();
}
// I would have expected the lock to have been released at this point, but this is not the case.
DoSomeLongRunningTasks();
// lock will be released once service2 exits
I don't understand why the lock is not released when the datacontext is disposed in Service2.
To get around the problem I have been calling:
db.ExecuteCommand("SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED");
and this works, but I am not happy using it.
I want to solve this problem properly.
Has any one experienced this sort of problem before and does any one know how to solve it?
Why is the lock not released after the datacontext has been disposed?
Thanks in advance.
p.s. sorry for the extremely long post.
Hi,
I have several developers which connect to production and test servers where we have DBs with similar names and structures. In SSMS there are info related to the connection, but sometimes are not properly displayed and/or hidden.
I know that it is possible to customize the status bar of each connection in SSMS, but how do you ensure that your developer is connecting to the right server before he runs a query? Is there any way to handle this?
THANKS!
