Nevertheless, I tried to self-teach C# but found it difficult. Then I pivoted to learn PHP two months ago and I have been able to build things I thought was beyond my abilities.   I operate a website for a West Australian company, and the company has listings in local business directory websites. Currently we are listed in: www.HotFrog.com.au www.Google.com/Places www.TrueLocal.com.au www.StartLocal.com.au www.localstore.com.au www.communityguide.com.au www.yelp.com.au www.aussieweb.com.au Do you know of any method for examining account stats (profile views, profile clicks etc) within a dashboard, so I can see at a glance how each of our listings is going? I'd be happy to build a dashboard if necessary, but I'm not confident I currently have the skills to accurately display only the correct concise information. Would I use iframes? See if they have APIs? Is there a dashboard framework I could use?

• How come verification does not include actual testing?

  Having read a lot about this topic, I still did not get it. Verification should prove that you are building the product right, while validation you build the right product. But only static techniques are mentioned as being verification methods (code reviews, requirements checks...). But how can you say if its implemented correctly if you do not test it? It is said that verification checks e.g. code for its correctnes. Verification - ensure that the product meet specified requirements. Again, if the function is specified to work somehow, only by testing I can say that it does. Could anyone explain this to me please? • Can I create a hybrid software-RAID array with disks of different sizes?

  Products such as Synology offer something called Synology Hybrid RAID http://www.synology.com/us/products/features/RAID.php This RAID type allows you to make best use of your disks available by using all the disk space available as long as at least two disks share the same increased size where a typical RAID setup would simply "throw away" the extra space I would like to build a NAS with 4 disks available. I will begin by populating it with 3 X 3TB to give me 6TB usable. By the time I have filled this 6TB I imagine that 4TB disks will have come down in price, so at this stage I would add a 4th 4TB disk to give me an additional 3TB of space. When I next run out of space I will change one of the original 3TB disks with a 4TB disk giving me an additional 1TB of space. This is not possible with a typical RAID configuration, only with these "hybrid RAID" types I am wondering if I can acheive a similar "hybrid RAID" with Ubuntu? or another linux distro?

• HedgeWar code confusion

  I looked at an open source project(HedgeWars) that was built using many programming languages such as C++ and Java. While I was looking through the code, I couldn't help noticing that all the math and physics were gone from the Java code. HedgeWars I imported the project file called "SDL-android-project" which was a sub folder to "android build" and project files. My question is where is all the math and physics inside the code? Do I have to look at the C++ code in order to see it? I think Hedgewars was originally programmed in C++ but the files are confusing be because of its size and the fact that it has several programming languages inside.

  With the advent of a new technology, some old ideas - despite been good - are forgotten in the process. I read a lot how some "new" thing was already present in Lisp like 60 years ago, but only recently resurface with other name or on top of another language. Now look like the new old thing is build functional, non-mutable, non-locking-thread stuff... and that make me wonder what have been "lost" in the art of development of software? What ideas are almost forgotten, waiting for resurface? One of my, I remember when I code in foxpro. The idea of have a full stack to develop database apps without impedance mismatch is something I truly miss. In the current languages, I never find another environment that match how easy was develop in fox back them. What else is missing?

  What is the best way to track defect sources in tfs? We have various teams for a project like the vulnerability team, the customer, pre-sales, etc. We give a build and these teams independently test it. They do not have access to our tfs system. So they usually send in their defects via email. It will usually be send in an excel format. Our testing team takes these up and logs them into tfs. Sometimes they modify the original defect description (in excel) and add the expected/actual results. Sometimes they miss to cite the source. I am talking about managing the various sources as such. Is there a way we can add these sources into tfs, and actually link this particular source with the defects, with individual comments associated with them (saying where in the source we can find the actual material for the defect).

• What technology should I concentrate on for mobile development? [closed]

  Firstly, I have many years experience with C# & .NET and some with Java. But, rather than committing to Java and developing native applications for Andriod I have been researching cross-platform deployment technologies. Currently, the most powerful cross-platform technology seems to be Flash, using Adobe AIR to package software as native applications. But given Adobe's announcement that it will discontinue support for the Flash Player on mobile devices it seems foolish (at this late stage) to invest in Flash and ActionScript as a developer. There has been speculation that Microsoft are also planning their exit strategy for Silverlight in favour of HTML5. So, my questions are; What is the most appropriate technology to invest in and learn in order to build cross-platform mobile applications / games while future proofing my skills as a developer? Is HTML5 mature enough to fill the 'Flash void' and be used to start building cross-platform, rich, interactive, networked mobile applications / games now? N.B. For HTML5 read (HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript)

When I read about the Python VM, the PyPy project, the advancements in JVM technology, Google V8, the Erlang VM, I really get excited about these amazing pieces of technology, and really want to get my hands dirty building them or contributing to one of these projects.   I made some game with XNA/C# for Windows Phone and Windows 8, since XNA is dead and Visual studio doesn't support it (I have to target Windows Phone 7.1 to build with XNA), I want to start learning something more "consistent in time" and improve my skills. I'm a little confused about the possibilities, because C++/DirectX alone seems difficult, so I found some high-level classes to help: DirectX Toolkit Cocos2D My questions are: What will happen when they will "die" like XNA? Is C++'s approces more "professional" than C#/XNA and why? Is C++'s approces more "portable"? Is C++'s approces more resistant in terms of time? Is there any consideration about DirectX TK and Cocos2D in terms of performance? I ask that because I found that every Game software house in my country looks for skilled C++ programmers.

  I would like to become a professional in php, I have learned nearly all about the language syntax and concepts and I have a good knowledge in C and C++, which made it easier to become familiar with PHP. (Of course, I learned MySql too.) But I don't feel like being able to build even a little good website of my own! It looks like PHP is all about knowing lots of functions and using them, while in fact I don't think it's like that, is it? How can I become a professional in PHP and Website Building? I would do anything and spend whatever amount of time required for that. EDIT I've also a very good knowledge in HTML and a normal knowledge in CSS and JavaScript. • Why were annotations introduced in Spring and Hibernate?

  I would like to know why were annotations introduced in Spring and Hibernate? For earlier versions of both the frameworks book authors were saying that if we keep configuration in xml files then it will be easier to maintain (due to decoupling) and just by changing the xml file we can re-configure the application. If we use annotations in our project and in future we want to re-configure application then again we have to compile and build the project. So why were these annotations introduced in these frameworks? From my point of view annotations make the apps dependent on certain framework. Isn't it true?

  I want to build a website for a retro thing that was popular in the mid 90s (beginning of the commercial internet). So I want use old designs that was very popular at that time. The first thing that comes to my mind was those "under construction" animated gifs. People often put animated gifs everywhere. But also those awful repeating backgrounds. • MediaWiki: how to make DISPLAYTITLE be used in categories listings

  The problem: a MediaWiki-driven site uses subpages to build pages hierarchy. When I add something like Page1/Page2/Subpage the exactly above string appears in listings and looks clumsy. I can't efficiently use short subpage title (Subpage in this example), since it can appear in different contexts and could confuse users. I can use DISPLAYTITLE magic word, with proper values of $wgRestrictDisplayTitle and $wgAllowDisplayTitle, to reassign page title and make it show on the page. However, when I look into categories listing this page, I will still see "Page1/Page2/Subpage" instead of the title assigned. Is there a simple way (through 'hack' or via relevant extension) to make the new title appear in every listing as well?

• Deploying a very simple application

  I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually deploying the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this deployment process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to deploy it in a professionnal way ?
