• PHP variable question

- by Kyle Parisi
This works: $customerBox = mysql_query("MY SQL STATEMENT HERE"); $boxRow = mysql_fetch_array($customerBox); $customerBox = mysql_query("MY SQL STATEMENT AGAIN"); while($item = mysql_fetch_assoc($customerBox)) { foreach ($item as $columnName = $value) { if (empty($value)) { print $columnName; } } } This does not: $customerBox = mysql_query("MY SQL STATEMENT HERE"); $boxRow = mysql_fetch_array($customerBox); while($item = mysql_fetch_assoc($customerBox)) { foreach ($item as $columnName = $value) { if (empty($value)) { print $columnName; } } } Why? I guess I don't understand how variables work yet.

• php:: apply backticks to first word in sentence

- by Hailwood
Hi guys, basically what I am trying to do is, I have an array that looks something like this: array( array( 'select' =>'first string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'second', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'the third string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'fourth string', 'escape' => false ), ) I am looping over it and I want to end up with this output array( array( 'select' =>'`first` string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'`second`', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'`the` third string', 'escape' => true ), array( 'select' =>'fourth string', 'escape' => false ), ) so basic rules are backticks are only applied if escape is true backticks are only applied to the first word in a sentence if there is only one word backticks are applied to the word My plan was to use if($item['escape']) { $pos = (strpos($item['select'], ' ') === false ? strlen($item['select']) : strpos($item['select'], ' ')); $item['select'] = '`' . substr($item['select'], 0, $pos) . '`' . substr($item['select'], $pos, strlen($item['select'])); } but the $item['select'] = line seems rather long winded, is there a better way to write it?

• PHP string enocding issue - Extra characters appearing

- by ryan
I see extra characters like â showing because of encoding issues as I found out here - HTML encoding issues - "Â" character showing up instead of " " I understand that if I set the browser meta encoding to UTF-8, these will not affect anything but I need to strip these extra characters from the database for other purposes. For eg. : Text: ↑ should be become Text: ? But if I run it through utf8_decode it gives me Text: ??? For every other occurrence of the â character, it converts properly to a blank space. Any help will be appreciated.

• How to assign variable dynamically to php list function

- by ravisoni
What I am doing that I want to generate a list based on how many items are in an array, so I have counted the items and loop over them, create a number based var and construct a string $var which contains $a1,$a2.... and assigns the $var to list list($var) and tried to access $a1 but it gives me the error "Undefined variable: a1" Is there any other way to do it? Here is my code: $arr = array('1','2','3'); $listsize = count($arr); $var=''; for($i=1;$i<=$listsize;$i++){ $var.='$a'.$i; if($i!=$listsize){ $var.=','; } } list($var) = $arr; echo $a1;

- by Industrial
Is there any fast way to flatten an array and select subkeys ('key'&'value' in this case) without running a foreach loop, or is the foreach always the fastest way? Array ( [0] => Array ( [key] => string [value] => a simple string [cas] => 0 ) [1] => Array ( [key] => int [value] => 99 [cas] => 0 ) [2] => Array ( [key] => array [value] => Array ( [0] => 11 [1] => 12 ) [cas] => 0 ) ) To: Array ( [int] => 99 [string] => a simple string [array] => Array ( [0] => 11 [1] => 12 ) )

• PHP Detect Pages Genre/Category

- by Alexwhin
Hey, I was wondering if their was any sort of way to detect a pages genre/category. Possibly their is a way to find keywords or something? Unfortunately I don't have any idea so far, so I don't have any code to show you. But if anybody has any ideas at all, let me know. Thanks! EDIT @Nican Perhaps their is a way to set, let's say 10 category's (Entertainment, Funny, Tech). Then creating keywords for these category's (Funny = Laughter, Funny, Joke etc). Then searching through a webpage (maybe using a cUrl) for these keywords and assigning it to the right category. Hope that makes sense.

• Problem with php GD image not creating

- by ThinkingInBits
With the following code, my browser is returning 'image not created or saved'. I assure you the location of the image exists. So the line within the if statement is returning false for some reason, and yes GD is installed. Any ideas? if ($img = @imagecreatefromjpeg("/var/www/images/upload/1/1.jpg")) { $image_width = imagesx($img); $image_height = imagesy($img); $target_width = 150; $target_height = 150; if ($image_width > $image_height) { $percentage = ($target_width / $image_width); } else { $percentage = ($target_height / $image_height); } $new_image_width = round($image_width * $percentage); $new_image_height = round($image_height * $percentage); $imgResized = imagecreatetruecolor($new_image_width, $new_image_height); imagecopyresampled($imgResized, $img, 0, 0, 0, 0, $new_image_width, $new_image_height, $image_width, $image_height); imagejpeg($imgResized, $this->path, 100); imagedestroy($img); imagedestroy($imgResized); $this->storeThumbnailLocation(); } else { die ("image was not created or saved"); }
