  • Need some help understanding IO Statistics

I have a query that has a very costly INDEX SEEK operation in the execution plan. In order to track down the cause i set IO STATISTICS on and ran it. Does anyone see anything here that i should look into in more detail?

  • SQL Self Join Query Help

    - by hdoe123
Hi All, I'm trying to work out a query that self join itself on a table using the eventnumber. I've never done a self join before. What i'm trying to query is when a client has started off in a city which is chester to see what city they moved to. But I dont want to be able to see if they started off in another city. I would also like be only see the move once (So i'd only like to see if they went from chester to london rather then chester to london to wales) The StartTimeDate is the same EndDateTime if they moved to another city. Data example as follows if they started off in the city chester :- clientid EventNumber City StartDateTime EndDateTime 1 1 Chester 10/03/2009 11/04/2010 13:00 1 1 Liverpool 11/04/2010 13:00 30/06/2010 16:00 1 1 Wales 30/07/2010 16:00 the result I would like to see is on the 2nd row - so it only shows me liverpool. Could anyone point in the right direcetion please?

  • GUI to include a `.props` file to a VS 2010 project?

    - by jwfearn
Visual Studio 2010 has no longer uses .vsprops files and instead uses .props files. To add a .vsprops file to a Visual Studio 2008 project, one could right-click the project icon in the Solution Explorer panel, choose Properties, go to the Configuration Properties | General section, and modify the Inherited Project Property Sheets property to contain a list of .vsprops paths. One could also modify the Visual Studio 2008 project file directly. Is there a way in the Visual Studio 2010 GUI to add .props files to a project? The Inherited Project Property Sheets property seems to have been removed. If manual editing of the project file is the only way to include .props files, where can one find documentation on doing it?

  • T-SQL aggregate function Logical error

    - by Yoda
Hi Guys, Ok I have a data table containing duplicate Reciept numbers and a transaction value for each record, I need to simply list the total for each unique Reciept number, this is obviously a simple problem but I am missing something. Any help is much appriciated > SELECT Gf_Receipt_number AS Reciept, > SUM (Gf_Amount) AS Total FROM > [TestP].[dbo].[Gf] WHERE > Gf_Receipt_number IS NOT NULL GROUP > BY Gf_Amount Would probably help to mention the the error I am recieving is: Column 'TestP.dbo.Gf.Gf_Receipt_number' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

  • SQL Joins Excluding Data

    - by Andrew
Say I have three tables: Fruit (Table 1) ------ Apple Orange Pear Banana Produce Store A (Table 2 - 2 columns: Fruit for sale => Price) ------------------------- Apple => 1.00 Orange => 1.50 Pear => 2.00 Produce Store B (Table 3 - 2 columns: Fruit for sale => Price) ------------------------ Apple => 1.10 Pear => 2.50 Banana => 1.00 If I would like to write a query with Column 1: the set of fruit offered at Produce Store A UNION Produce Store B, Column 2: Price of the fruit at Produce Store A (or null if that fruit is not offered), Column 3: Price of the fruit at Produce Store B (or null if that fruit is not offered), how would I go about joining the tables? I am facing a similar problem (with more complex tables), and no matter what I try, if the "fruit" is not at "produce store a" but is at "produce store b", it is excluded (since I am joining produce store a first). I have even written a subquery to generate a full list of fruits, then left join Produce Store A, but it is still eliminating the fruits not offered at A. Any Ideas?

  • SQL Server view: how to add missing rows using interpolation

    - by Christopher Klein
Running into a problem. I have a table defined to hold the values of the daily treasury yield curve. It's a pretty simple table used for historical lookup of values. There are notibly some gaps in the table on year 4, 6, 8, 9, 11-19 and 21-29. The formula is pretty simple in that to calculate year 4 it's 0.5*Year3Value + 0.5*Year5Value. The problem is how can I write a VIEW that can return the missing years? I could probably do it in a stored procedure but the end result needs to be a view.

  • SQL Server 2000 + ASP.NET: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'

    - by Rick
I just migrated a development workstation FROM: Windows XP Pro SP3 with IIS 6 TO: Vista Enterprise 64bit with IIS 7 Since the move, one of my pages that accesses an SQL Server 2000 database is receiving the following error from my ASP.NET 2.0 web page: "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'." I have: enabled Windows Authentication in IIS and web.config disabled Anonymous Authentication in IIS set up Impersonation to run as the authenticated user verified that the logged in user (in this case, me) has access to the appropriate database on the SQL Server verified that my login and impersonation information is correct in the ASP.NET page by checking User.Identity.Name and System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name (both display my username) My connection string using SqlConnection is "Server={SERVER_NAME};Database={DB_NAME};Integrated Security=SSPI;Trusted_Connection=True;" Why is it trying to login with NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGIN? I have to assume it's some setting or web.config entry specific to IIS7 since it worked fine before the migration. NOTE: The SQL Server is Windows authentication only - no mixed mode or SQL only.

  • How to improve performance of non-scalar aggregations on denormalized tables

    - by The Lazy DBA
Suppose we have a denormalized table with about 80 columns, and grows at the rate of ~10 million rows (about 5GB) per month. We currently have 3 1/2 years of data (~400M rows, ~200GB). We create a clustered index to best suit retrieving data from the table on the following columns that serve as our primary key... [FileDate] ASC, [Region] ASC, [KeyValue1] ASC, [KeyValue2] ASC ... because when we query the table, we always have the entire primary key. So these queries always result in clustered index seeks and are therefore very fast, and fragmentation is kept to a minimum. However, we do have a situation where we want to get the most recent FileDate for every Region, typically for reports, i.e. SELECT [Region] , MAX([FileDate]) AS [FileDate] FROM HugeTable GROUP BY [Region] The "best" solution I can come up to this is to create a non-clustered index on Region. Although it means an additional insert on the table during loads, the hit isn't minimal (we load 4 times per day, so fewer than 100,000 additional index inserts per load). Since the table is also partitioned by FileDate, results to our query come back quickly enough (200ms or so), and that result set is cached until the next load. However I'm guessing that someone with more data warehousing experience might have a solution that's more optimal, as this, for some reason, doesn't "feel right".

  • exec problem in sql 2005

    - by IordanTanev
Hi, i have the situation where i have two databases whith same structure. The first have some data in its datatables. I need to create a script that will transfer the data from the first database to the second. I have created this script. DECLARE @table_name nvarchar(MAX), @query nvarchar(MAX) DECLARE @table_cursor CURSOR SET @table_cursor = CURSOR FAST_FORWARD FOR Select TABLE_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES OPEN @table_cursor FETCH NEXT FROM @table_cursor INTO @table_name WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0 BEGIN SET @query = 'INSERT INTO ' + @table_name + ' SELECT * FROM MyDataBase.dbo.' + @table_name print @query exec @query FETCH NEXT FROM @table_cursor INTO @table_name END CLOSE @table_cursor DEALLOCATE @table_cursor The problem is that when i run th script the "print @query" statement prints statement like this INSERT INTO table SELECT * FROM MyDataBase.dbo.table When i copy this and run it from Management studio it works fine. But when the script trys to run it with exec i get this error Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 21 Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'INSERT INTO table SELECT * FROM MPDEV090314'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly. Hope someone can tell me whot is wront with this. Best Regards, Iordan Tanev

  • Firewall will not play ball

    - by Jason94
I'm running SQL Server 2008 Express on a windows 2012... or at least I'm trying to :) My problem is that I have opened the ports I thought I needed but still I cant manage to connect to the database from Visual Studio. As proof I have a screenshot of my firewall settings: Everything works fine if I turn the firewall off, but who wants that while connected to the internet? So I wonder what the heck is wrong? Is that some arbitrary ports that gets blocked? Is that a feature on the server (maybe its the same for 2008?) Large image: http://bildr.no/view/1280743

  • Sql server table can be queried but not updated

    - by Nigel
i have a table which was always updatable before, but then suddenly i can no longer update the any of the columns in the table. i can still query the whole table and the results come back very fast, but the moment i try to update a column in the table, the update query simply stalls and does nothing. i tried using select req_transactionUOW from master..syslockinfo where req_spid = -2 to see if some orphaned transaction was locking the table, but it returns no results. i can't seems to find signs of my table being locked, but simply cannot update it. any clues as to how to fix the table or whatever state it is in?

  • SQL Query with multiple values in one column

    - by lp1
I've been beating my head on the desk tring to figure this one out. I have a table that stores job information, and reasons for a job not being completed. The reasons are numeric,01,02,03,etc. You can have two reason for a pending job. If you select two reasons, they are stored in the same column, seperated by a comma. This is anExample from the JOBID table: Job_Number User_Assigned PendingInfo 1 user1 01,02 Now, there is another table named Pending, that stores what those values actually represent. 01=Not enough info, 02=Not enough time, 03=Waiting Review. Example: Pending_Num PendingWord 01 Not Enough Info 02 Not Enough Time What I'm trying to do is query the database to give me all the job numbers, users, pendinginfo, and pending reason. I can break out the first value, but can't figure out how to do the second. What my limited skills have so far: *select Job_number,user_assigned,SUBSTRING(pendinginfo,0,3),pendingword from jobid, pending where SUBSTRING(pendinginfo,0,3)=pending.pending_num and pendinginfo!='00,00' and pendinginfo!='NULL'* What I would like to see for this example would be: Job_Number User_Assigned PendingInfo PendingWord PendingInfo PendingWord 1 User1 01 Not Enough Info 02 Not Enough Time Thanks in advance

  • Optimizing Disk I/O & RAID on Windows SQL Server 2005

    - by David
I've been monitoring our SQL server for a while, and have noticed that I/O hits 100% every so often using Task Manager and Perfmon. I have normally been able to correlate this spike with SUSPENDED processes in SQL Server Management when I execute "exec sp_who2". The RAID controller is controlled by LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager. We have the following setup: System Drive (Windows) on RAID 1 with two 280GB drives SQL is on a RAID 10 (2 mirroed drives of 280GB in two different spans) This is a database that is hammered during the day, but is pretty inactive at night. The DB size is currently about 13GB, and is used by approximately 200 (and growing) users a day. I have a couple of ideas I'm toying around with: Checking for Indexes & reindexing some tables Adding an additional RAID 1 (with 2 new, smaller, HDs) and moving the SQL's Log Data File (LDF) onto the new RAID. For #2, my question is this: Would we really be increasing disk performance (IO) by moving data off of the RAID 10 onto a RAID 1? RAID 10 obviously has better performance than RAID 1. Furthermore, SQL must write to the transaction logs before writing to the database. But on the flip side, we'll be reducing both the size of the disks as well as the amount of data written to the RAID 10, which is where all of the "meat" is - thereby increasing that RAID's performance for read requests. Is there any way to find out what our current limiting factor is? (The drives vs. the RAID Controller)? If the limiting factor is the drives, then maybe adding the additional RAID 1 makes sense. But if the limiting factor is the Controller itself, then I think we're approaching this thing wrong. Finally, are we just wasting our time? Should we instead be focusing our efforts towards #1 (reindexing tables, reducing network latency where possible, etc...)?

  • SQL Overlapping and Multi-Column Indexes

    - by durilai
I am attempting to tune some stored procedures and have a question on indexes. I have used the tuning advisor and they recommended two indexes, both for the same table. The issue is one index is for one column and the other is for multiple columns, of which it includes the same column from the first. My question is why and what is the difference? CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [_dta_index_Table1_5_2079723603__K23_K17_K13_K12_K2_K10_K22_K14_K19_K20_K9_K11_5_6_7_15_18] ON [dbo].[Table1] ( [EfctvEndDate] ASC, [StuLangCodeKey] ASC, [StuBirCntryCodeKey] ASC, [StuBirStOrProvncCodeKey] ASC, [StuKey] ASC, [GndrCodeKey] ASC, [EfctvStartDate] ASC, [StuHspncEnctyIndctr] ASC, [StuEnctyMsngIndctr] ASC, [StuRaceMsngIndctr] ASC, [StuBirDate] ASC, [StuBirCityName] ASC ) INCLUDE ( [StuFstNameLgl], [StuLastOrSrnmLgl], [StuMdlNameLgl], [StuIneligSnorImgrntIndctr], [StuExpctdGrdtngClYear] ) WITH (SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF) ON [PRIMARY] go CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [_dta_index_Table1_5_2079723603__K23] ON [dbo].[Table1] ( [EfctvEndDate] ASC )WITH (SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF) ON [PRIMARY]

  • Microsoft VC++ 2005 SP1 and 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package

    - by ewlung
Dear developers, I have an application that requires Microsoft VC++ 2005 (SP1) Redistributable Package. I know that I can just download it and install it. The problem is, in our server, there is Microsoft VC++ 2008 (SP1) Redistributable Package already installed. Now, do I still need to install the 2005 (SP1) version? Or the 2008 (SP1) is "backward compatible" with 2005 (SP1)? Thank you.

  • Dynamically call a stored procedure from another stored procedure

    - by Greg
I want to be able to pass in the name of a stored procedure as a string into another stored procedure and have it called with dynamic parameters. I'm getting an error though. Specifically I've tried: create procedure test @var1 varchar(255), @var2 varchar(255) as select 1 create procedure call_it @proc_name varchar(255) as declare @sp_str varchar(255) set @sp_str = @proc_name + ' ''a'',''b''' print @sp_str exec @sp_str exec call_it 'test' So procedure call_it should call procedure test with arguments 'a', and 'b'. When I run the above code I get: Msg 2812, Level 16, State 62, Procedure call_it, Line 6 Could not find stored procedure 'test 'a','b''. However, running test 'a','b' works fine.

  • Comma-separated value insertion In SQL Server 2005

    - by Asim Sajjad
How can I insert values from a comma-separated input parameter with a stored procedure? For example: exec StoredProcedure Name 17,'127,204,110,198',7,'162,170,163,170' you can see that I have two comma-separated value lists in the parameter list. Both will have the same number of values: if the first has 5 comma-separated values, then the second one also has 5 comma-separated values. 127 and 162 are related 204 and 170 are related ...and same for the others. How can I insert these two values? One comma-separated value is inserted, but how do I insert two?

  • Selecting fields in SQL Select statements (Dumbest SQL Question)

    - by JC
Hello all, Here's a dumb question which I can't find an answer to: I have a table which contains 20 fields, a few of which are date/time. I am interested in pulling all the fields. I would like to pull the datetime fields using the to_char function but don't want to individually list out all the other fields. Is there an easy way to do this? I tried select *, tochar(dtfield) as dt2 and select tochar(dtfield) as dt2, * and both give errors. Thanks for all your help! JC

Now I am trying to add new records to one of the tables which has an XML column in it. How do I do this? This is the error I'm getting: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was caught Message="XML Validation: Text node is not allowed at this location, the type was defined with element only content or with simple content. Location: /" Source=".Net SqlClient Data Provider" ErrorCode=-2146232060 Class=16 LineNumber=22 Number=6909 Procedure="AppendDataC" Server="." (I'm now in a bad state.) i tried to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise and its says I'm blocked as all components are already installed - but they are not. How can I remove all instance of previous one and install clean Enterprise edition on my server Thanks
