  • 1 year to learn as much as possile - How would you plan this time?

    I have been messing around with web development and programming in general for a couple of years now, working in web development agencies and the like. I have now decided that I want to move to more general programming and do this permanently and as a career and have set myself a goal of 1 year to learn as much as I can before I go out and find a 'proper' job as a programmer. Do any programmers out there have any opinions on how this time should be split and what the most important things to focus on will be over the year. The languages I will be focusing my learning on are: c, php, python and go - all of which i have varying degrees of familiarity with. The ultimate goal here is to gain as good as foundation as possible and to be of a good enough level to interview successfully for a decent company.

  • Are there any actual examples of profitable programmer's "worker's cooperatives"?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worker_cooperative I'm curious whether there are, anywhere in the world, worker's cooperatives that center on a technology business that involves either programming, IT, or some sort of IT or programming related consulting or services. The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

Source organizations can decide to ship a substitute item in case the original item is not available to be shipped. The application supports manual (using Related Items window) and automatic (using ATP functionality) substitutions.To substitute an item on ISO, you must ensure that the value of the Item Substitution on Internal Order system parameter is set to a value other than None. In addition, you must ensure to define substitute item relationships and automatic item substitution setup in the system. The application provides the option to not send the notifications when any change happens on the ISO related to quantity, schedule arrival date, or item.     I'm simulating a small scenario: Users can be dragged into roles; roles can be dragged into role groups. When a drop is made into a role group, a new role is created (WindowManager.getDefault().setRole("")). Then, when the user logs in, they log into a particular role. Depending on the role they log into, a different role group is assigned, which maps to a certain "role" in NetBeans Platform terms, i.e., the related level of security is applied and the related windows open.

    In late 2001 I developed an internal talk on designing hardware for easier error injection, prevention, diagnosis, and correction. (This talk became the basis for my paper on injecting errors for fun and profit.) In that talk (but not in the paper), I articulated 10 principles of RAS design, which I list for you here: Protect everything Correct where you can Detect where you can't Where protection not feasible (e.g., ALUs), duplicate and compare Report everything; never throw away RAS information Allow non-destructive inspection (logging/scrubbing) Allow non-destructive alteration (injection) (that is, only change the bits you want changed, and leave everything else as is) Allow observation of all the bits as they are (logging) Allow alteration of any particular bit or combination of bits (injection) Document everything Of course, it isn't always feasible to follow these rules completely all the time, but I put them out there as a starting point.

  • Algorithm for Learning development

I know a bit of Perl and Python and I am looking to learn programming in more depth so that once I get the hang of it I can start developing applications and then websites. I would like to know of an algorithm (sequence of steps :)) that could describe my approach towards learning programming in general. I have posted small questions on Perl/Python and I have recieved great help from everyone. Note:- I am not in a hurry to learn. I know it takes time and that's fine. Please give any suggestions you think are valid. Also, please don't push me to learn Lisp, Haskell etc - I am a beginner.

  • Cannot access my own web page

    I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

  • Looking to create a website ... need assistance on what technologies to use!

    First off, My group and I don't have any experience with databases or anything of that sort, only programming (not web-programming), so this post is just me wondering what things I should start researching and possibly some referral to a hosting company. The abstract idea is to have a list of things, each categorized, and each item with user-submitted reviews (made by users who are signed up with the website). Would absolutely everything be stored on a SQL database? (the long text reviews for example) Does anyone have any suggestions on some 'web frameworks' we could use to jumpstart us? What should our absolute first step be? (I was thinking about first designing the basic database? so we have something to work around...?) Should we worry about which host we choose right now, any recommendations? (would it be a trivial task to switch hosts in the future?) Thanks again, any help is appreciated!

  • PHP or C++? I just want to choose a language and focus on it!

    I love C++, but I feel I don't know if I should focus on web, so PHP, or C++. It's just an hard choice because right now I want to focus on one language and don't want to switch it a few months later. With C++ I'd program in SDL, while with PHP I don't know yet. I am not a very advanced programmer but I know basics of programming and can get going very well if determined. The problem is I just don't know.. I'm like OK! I'll go for C++! Then a minute later, wait what if I went with C#? Why this that.. ! I've read milion threads about C vs VB C# Python Ruby etc, all of them which I could find! It got me nowhere. The problem is probably I need to know something from some experts I guess.. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels/felt like I do right now yeah? Uhm... I guess I might help you with some details so your answer may be easier to write! ( And also, if you want to say something else which is not related to PHP or C++, you can do that, I've just got to the conclusion that C++ and PHP are the ones that are worth it but yeah. C# I've discarded due to some stuff I read which says in future the projects I'd start now could just be useless and stuff like that.. ) Ok well : I'm 18 years old, and I program as hobby right now, but I do hope to go to a programming college in future. ( That would be in 2 years ). Hmm, I like programming games, and I'm mostly bothered by the fact "this language could be useless to what I need to do" ( I don't know how to explain this feeling! ) I don't know which other details I could add...     Background: I am going to design a firewall-like application (with GUI) which will include several functions such as Packet sniffing and packet filtering. Both of the functions should be implemented to support different protocol levels including application, transport, network and link layer. I only know a little in C#.Net programming to perform the IP packet sniffing. It is also known that packet filtering requires the techniques in WFP or LSP and packet sniffing in application requires dll hooking. Questions: I am not sure which programming language(either C++ or C#) would be suitable for designing such an application described above. If I want to implement the packet filtering function, any libraries will be needed? edit01: Someone suggest that winDivert would be helpful, is it true?

  • How to name a clamp function that only clamps from one side?

    Clamp() is a function that ensures that provided variable is in provided range. You can find such function in .NET, in Unity, and probably anywhere. While it is useful, I often need to clamp my value from one side only. For example, to ensure that float is always non-negative or always positive (like radius value from inspector). I used names ClampFromAbove() and ClampFromBelow(), but I wonder if such names is good or even grammatically valid in programming-English. Also, it probably make sense to distinguish non-negative case too. How'd you name such function? Something like EnsureNonNegative()? My intention is creating pair of extension methods and use them like this: var normalizedRadius = originalRadius.ClampFromBelow(0.0001); var distance = someVector.Magnitude.ClampFromAbove(maxDistance);

  • How to separate and maintain customer specific code

    I am implementing customer specific code and currently following simple approach like if (cusomterId == 23) do it. I want to separate out all the customer related code in separate place. But I have following problems. In code is in 1. Stored procs 2. Plain old classes. 3. Controllers 4. Views I came up with two solutions. First is to create table CustomerFunctionlity with columns CustomerId, FunctionalityName, method/Proc, inputs/outputs With this table I can simply check if exists, execute given function. Another way is creating a factory which returns customer related object for an interface. I am writting small end to end customer specific functionalities. How can I write maintenable code. Thanks

  • Dual display setup - only one displayed after logon

    During boot process my desktop shows both Monitors, but after log I only get one. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 When I go into Displays its still only shows on Monitor.   • How to give life to my idea which belong to my company?

    I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product. What can you suggest in this situation? How to avoid breaching of contract? Have you had something similar in your career? What if my intention is to develop it as an open source project?
