Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

• holding session state with zend framework in iframe?

  I have a php site optimized for iphone, its currently running inside of an iframe in a uiwebview objective c wrapper. Everything currently works except for the sessions inside of the iframe, Im assuming this is due to the cross domain issue with iframes and sessions? my solution is to save the sessions to the db. Is this the best solution? Will this even solve my problem? should I use memcache instead? are there any good tutorials for doing this? I havent been able to find an easy to implement solution for saving the session data, im a bit confused by the bootstrap.php and I keep getting this error when I try to add session saving: 'no adapter found for Zend_Session_SaveHandler_DbTable' any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

• Best options for freelance or part-time programming? [closed]

  I apologize in advance if this is an inappropriate question for this SE. A few years back I was all set to study computer science and get a job programming, but went a totally different route and went into healthcare. I currently work as a paramedic on a rotating 24/48 schedule, so I have two days off for every day I work, and a decent bit of downtime on the days that I do work. I've been looking at ways to earn some extra money with all that spare time, and was wondering if it'd be worth the effort to try and find a part-time/freelance gig. I know HTML/CSS, PHP, and I'm pretty familiar with Python and Ruby (and Rails). Anyways, was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as what "skill set" would give me the best chance to be able to land a part-time/freelance gig. I realize this is a rather open-ended question but any direction is appreciated.

  My service has a large ongoing number of user events, and we would like to do things like "count occurrence of event type T since date D." We are trying to make two basic decisions: What to store? Storing every event vs. only storing aggregates (Event log style) log every event and count them later, vs. (Time-series style) store a single aggregated "count of event E for date D" for every day Where to store the data In a relational database (particularly MySQL) In a non-relational (NoSQL) database In flat log files (collected centrally over the network via syslog-ng) What is standard practice / where can I read more about comparing the different types of systems? Additional details: The total event stream is large, potentially hundreds of thousands of entries per day But our current need is only to count certain types of events within it We don't necessarily need real-time access to the raw data or aggregation results IMHO, "log all events to files, crawl them at a later time to filter and aggregate the stream" is a pretty standard UNIX Way, but my Rails-y compatriots seem to think that nothing is real unless it's in MySQL.

  I am well versed in the basics of Java programming, although through most of my career I have been maintaining, upgrading, and debugging someone else's Java code. I am mainly familiar with basic servlet applications. I have a strong beginner knowledge of Maven and Ant. I have more web development with Ruby on Rails, but would like to bring my Java skills up to par with regard to web development. It seems the world of Java is so big, I have no idea what the next logical step is for me. Spring? JAX-RB? EJBs? What is the next logical step for someone like me and how would you recommend I approach it?

• What options do I have for a Wedding Car website? [on hold]

  I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc? I am totally unsure where to go with this website, the site currently has a few images and a small amount of text. Things I am considering, but would like advice on: A Mobile version of the website A Blog on the website A gallery page with pictures and descriptions Asking local companies to link to my website Essentially I have a small business website but not much content, because really there isnt! • Does using a PHP framework count as experience using PHP to a company that doesn't use that framework?

  I've started working at a company that uses the Yii PHP framework. I'm mostly using Yii but also some frontend stuff like jQuery and Ajax. What I'm worried about is limiting my skill set to a framework that isn't very popular. I mean, if the company I worked for was using Ruby on Rails or even Django, I wouldn't have this feeling of concern for the future. My first question is then, in regards to being able to find a job in the future somewhere else, is my feeling of concern warranted? Secondly, I see a lot of PHP jobs out there but do you think experience using a PHP framework counts as valuable experience to a company that doesn't use that particular framework or any framework at all?

• RSpec + Selenium tests for .NET on Windows

  I'm a Rails developer doing TDD on a Mac with RSpec, Capybara and Selenium webdriver. Now I have been asked by my company to use this approach for a .NET on Windows environment. What is the best way of doing this? I could just install Ruby and use RSPEC, Capybara and Selenium webdriver for integration testing. But what about unit tests? I also looked at NSpec, but I'm not sure if I can combine that with Capybara or Selenium for integration tests. What would be a good approach here?

  Or yet another Twitter grid Yesterday, while I was playing around with this example of our MVC Grid, I thought that the RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX deserves one too. I recently discussed & visited some of the websites which states that java is better then .net, a I also discussed with some of the experience persons all suggested me to switch to java of course spring, struts etc. As Java developer is being paid high then .net one. I personally think I should go for web services SOAP, XML etc. thanks to all for response I also want to know if I can only move to webservices ex. WCF, SOAP, XML, XSLT etc. Kindly help me I am bit confused. Thanks

• Forum that integrates into CMS and has curated category pages with tagged threads

  I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles.
