  Or yet another Twitter grid Yesterday, while I was playing around with this example of our MVC Grid, I thought that the RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX deserves one too. • Make user object available to all Controllers in Zend?

  Hey guys, I'm using Zend_Auth to identify a user in my application. This creates a session with the userobject. My question is how do I make this object available to every Controller and action, so I don't have to pull it out of the session every time I need data from this object? I'm guessing this should be done in bootstrap.php or index.php but I don't really know how to makte it available to every controller.. so any code examples would be appreciated! Thanks!

In the web programming world, it would be a big waste of time to make a website without using some sort of web framework (eg ruby on rails). Is that the same for making games? • .NET - Verify and Install .NET Framework 3.5 before running application

  PLEASE READ THE FULL QUESTION BEFORE POST YOUR ANSWER Hello guys! I'm currently developing a "Extremelly customized Installer Application" in C# for installing a old classic ASP application. It'll be used during the 2.0 version is developed (ASP.NET MVC with C#). As its so different from the efault install packages, I've made it as normal windows application, not as setup application (a setup application don't let us customize so much as I need). And here is the problem: As its a windows application, I must "Release" it and send the compiled .EXE with the .DLLs, I must not "Publish" because if i do so, the published .EXE will "install the installer" and not my application. I need a way to verify and install the .NET Framework 3.5 like a bootstrap package prerequisite used in publishing option, but remember that I'm not publishing, I'm doing a "Release" build. • What Part of Your Project Should be in Source Code Control?

  A fellow developer has started work on a new Drupal project, and the sysadmin has suggested that they should only put the sites/default subdirectory in source control, because it "will make updates easily scriptable." Setting aside that somewhat dubious claim, it raises another question -- what files should be under source control? And is there a situation where some large chunk of files should be excluded? My opinion is that the entire tree for the project should be under control, and this would be true for a Drupal project, rails, or anything else. This seems like a no-brainer -- you clearly need versioning for your framework as much as you do for any custom code you write. That said, I would love to get other opinions on this. Are there any arguments for not having everything under control? Is this sysadmin a BOFH?

• PHPUnit doesn't recognize file_exists()

  I've set up a project with unit test files in NetBeans. I set bootstrap to C:\www\foo\_tests\TestAutoload.php and put simple autoload method to this file: function __autoload( $class_name ) { // series of ifs if ( ... ) { $file_name = ... } if ( file_exists ( $file_name ) ) { require_once( $file_name ); } else { echo "autoload error"; } } All of my tests fail on autoload this way. They always output just "autoload error". If I don't check if file_exists and just use require_once( $file ) no matter what's in $file, it works perfectly. Anyone encountered anything like this before? It's not something I couldn't resolve by simply not checking whether file exists or not, but I'm interested why it does this and if I can cheat it somehow.

• Can Grails exceptionHandler support the following Error Handling Flow

  In my rails app that I am porting to grails whenever an unexpected error occurs I intercept the error automatically and display a form to the user informing them that an error has occured and asking them for further information. Meanwhile, as the form is rendered I write the stack trace and other information about who was logged in to a database table. Then if the form is submitted I add that information to the error report. I cannot tell from the exceptionHandler documentation and BootStrap examples whether that will allow me to grab all the information including various session and request parameters and then stuff them into a database and then post a form. Any thoughts?

• Interviews that include Algorithms and Data Structures

  I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? • frameworks for coding a php library?

  there are plenty of frameworks for coding MVC web applications. this time im going to code a library (think of Doctrine or Solr) with a bunch of class files. u just include a bootstrap or a class file and you are ready to use my classes. i have never tried to code a library before and intend to code one for learning purpose so that i can use various design patterns i have learned. are there any great frameworks for this, how i should organize the different class files, where i can put configuration files and so on? tutorials or other information would be great too. thanks

• Tracking logged in vs. non-logged in users in Google Analytics

  I am building a social media site that is similar is structure to twitter and facebook.com where unauthenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see a login + sign-up page, and authenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see their timeline. My question is, what is the best practice (using Google Analytics) for tracking these two different types of users who are viewing completely different content but are visiting the same URL. I tried searching the Google Analytics docs but couldn't find what they suggested for this scenario. Perhaps I just don't know what keywords to search for. Thanks in advance for any help.
