  • Problem with running open office from the command line

    Yesterday I installed OpenOffice on my Linux server. But when I go to run it through the command line, it says command cannot be found. I've also tried other things like OOWriter, etc. Has anyone had this problem?   • Simple Image Capture Tool for Mac OS X that uses FireWire

    I have Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) on a G4 Powerbook and a camcorder with a firewire device. It doesn't have iMovie, which is now part of the separate iLife Suite and requires an Intel Mac. Anyway, Image Capture does not recognize the firewire video feed as an image capture device. What software would give me the simplest "capture this frame from live firewire video feed to image" functionality.

    Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too.   • Is this memory compatible with this motherboard???

    Hi, I have a Foxconn P35AP-S as seen here. I need to get some more RAM since I only have 1 2GB stick. The current one is 1066MHz. I would like to get the memory situated here: www.scan.co.uk/Products/6GB-(3x2GB)-Corsair-XMS3-Classic-DDR3-PC3-10666-(1333)-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-7-7-7-20-165V memory. It is 6GB of Corair 1333MHz memory. According to the motherboard website it is able to take 1333MHz, but it says oc** next to it (which means achieved when overclocked). So my question is: are they still compatible without overclocking, or does the motherboard require overclocking to be compatible? If it requires overclocking (which I have no idea how to do) can anyone recommend any other memory (in the region of 6GB) which the motherboard is compatible with? I'd rather it were from Scan, but to be honest it doesnt need to be. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Richard Edit: I just realised that the motherboard has a maximum capacity of 4GB of RAM. Scrap the RAM given above, I'd like to go for something like that but only 4GB. Edit: Scrap that last edit - its only if I go for DDR3 that I need to take this into account. DDR2 is a maximum of 8GB.

  • Is there any way to do 'software raid' without losing data?I

    I say software raid because that is a pretty tentative guess at what I actually want. I have two drives, both with stuff already on them which I want to combine. If they weren't full of stuff (data, not windows installation) I would use software raid to combine them into one big drive or make them into one partition. I could probably do this with some complicated reference system but really I just want to be able to keep saving things to X: without running out of space until both drives are full.   • Uninstall Linux Mint without deleting partition?

    I've got a dual-boot system using Windows 7 and Linux Mint 13. When I first installed Mint using the regular Mint installer, the installer did not give me the option of partitioning my drive, presumably because my computer already had 4 partitions. I decided that I wanted to uninstall Mint and opt for Ubuntu instead, but I have no idea how to remove Mint! Every guide I look at tells me to just delete/reformat the Linux partition... But in my case, no separate partition exists.

  • auto copy newest folders and images in MyPictures folder to USB drive

    I drop lots of photos in a day into the My Documents/My Pictures folder. I archive at the end of each day to USB drives, to be stored offsite. What I would like is someway to automate the process. By example, a small app or script I can simply double-click and it will scan the My Pictures folder for the newest folders and images and copy them to the USB drive until the drive is full. It doesn't matter if I get redundancy from the previous days saved images, so long as the newest images and folders are always the first to get copied. Well, that's my request. Thanks for reading.

  • Running Windows Update inside Windowx XP Mode

    I am working on a Win 7 Ultimate machine, and was using XP for some development tasks (for compatibility checks). Everything worked like a charm on the XP, including updates. Two days ago I had to switch computer (mainly a new motherboard/cpu), and I had just stuck my old HD inside the newer case. Win 7 worked like a charm - installed all the new drivers, identified everything automatically, no sweat. The trouble started when I tried running my old XP mode - it won't launch, complaining about the cpu change. I figured it's not a big deal, and I deleted the VM, and re-ran XP mode. It told me it can't find it, and offered to create a new one, just what I wanted. I had finished setting up the new XP mode VM, and it seems to work just fine. Got it to use the host network adapter, so I can surf from "inside". But I can't get Windows Update to run. Whenever I click on the "Custom" button on the WU site, after a short while, I get the [Error number: 0x80072EFD] page. I tried several solution from around the web for it (clearing some cache and restarting the wuauserv, even a microsoft fix-it run), but still nothing seems to work. Anyone here has any new tip for me? Thanks.

    Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard I have always had problems with Skype. When I start a video chat, Skype tells me that my camera is not installed on the machine (even though it clearly is). After searching the internet I have found some 'solutions' but none of them work. After trying them, it makes my camera feed appear as a blank, green image. How can I get Skype to function with the built in iSight with Snow Leopard properly? is there any body else face this problem?

  • How to use WeirdX applet instead of X11 for remote connections in Mac OS X?

    When I am away, I've got an Apple PowerBook set up to use X11 forwarding with SSH to connect to a remote iMac in my room. Whenever I start X client programs on the client iMac, X11 would start on my PowerBook, which is OK. Question: Is it possible to change my settings so that the WeirdX applet I have on my PowerBook will take care of the X client programs instead of the default X11? Is there a config file I can edit to chance the $DISPLAY variable, and what should I set it to? Is this even the issue? Thank you very much.

  • WEP key not working on laptop running Ubuntu

    I can't connect to my router via wifi from my laptop (running Ubuntu) even if I'm 100% sure the WEP key I punch in is correct. It works via LAN though. I'm also not able to ping localhost 127.0.0.1. I had some problems setting up the radio on my network card but I think that that works since it finds some wireless networks. (Although it's much much faster than Windows it's useless since I can't download any libraries for development.) What could be wrong with my setup?

    In outlook 2010 I am unable to show the number of messages within a particular group. For example, I categorise my messages and then when I sort by category, there is no way to show the number of messages within that(those) category(ies). Previous versions of outlook would do this by default, but I am not finding the setting to do this in Outlook 2010. If it isn't possible, is there anything method to count those messages within a group/category easily?

  • How can I prevent my volume from changing when initiating a Skype call?

    I already know about the option in Control Panel Sound Communications, so please don't bother pointing me there. I am using the Skype Modern UI app and whenever I start a call, it lowers the volume of anything else that I have active. How can I resolve this issue? Also, not sure if this is related, but any Modern UI music apps also lower their own volume when they are not in the foreground.   • Virtual Machines: What components should I upgrade to improve running virtual machines?

    at work I need to have one or sometimes two instances of a vmware virtual Windows 7 machine running on my real Windows 7 machine. The computer I'm using is Dell Precision 490 from 2009 I believe, possibly earlier. Running Windows 7 ultimate. Problems while running VM's: The entire computer slows down when a vmware instance is running. Pages take a while to react to a scroll, applications take forever to launch, and programs hang both in the virtual machines and on the real one. So, what components should I upgrade to improve this? I guess a more pointed question would be, which components will help the most? Possible options: Getting 8gb of RAM instead of 4gb new graphics card new processors? (Is that really an option?) My intuition tells me it will be a combination of the RAM and graphics card. There is also the possibility that an '09 tower just isn't cut out for vm's and our business should purchase a new tower.

    I have a 2-3 year old laptop running XBMC, and I have an HDTV that I'd like to connect it to. The only output that the laptop has is VGA (and S-Video - I don't know if the TV supports it) . The TV doesn't support VGA input, but takes HDMI. -- Is it worth buying a VGA-to-HDMI converter? As in this: -- Are there any other, cheaper options available? There's a lot of information around the WWW, but a lot of it's outdated and it's hard to digest everything. I know of at least one other option, and that's a USB to HDMI connection, but I don't even know what to look for or where to get started on that one. I also suspect it might be a little more complicated. If it's cheaper then it could be worth it.     Basically we have hq scans of thousands of old family photos. Plus tons of family video. We want to host them where we can still have total control over the content and restrict access. I'm a php programmer, so the security is not an issue. What is an issue is finding a host to store 10 TB of data and not be paying a ton of money. We really are not planning on a lot of traffic. Maybe 1-10 visitors a day; family only. Kind of like an online library.

    There is no option in Windows Explorer to scan a particular drive (or file) on demand by right clicking on it in Windows Explorer as we had in Windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials or like other antivirus solutions. I know we can run a custom scan for the particular drive or specific folder but that process is too lengthy and time consuming. The guide How to Add a "Windows Defender" Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8 explains how we can add Windows Defender in the desktop right click menu, so I'm curious, is there a way to add it in the Windows Explorer right click menu to launch a search whenever I need to?

  • Firefox switches focus to previous window when the current newly opened window's page loads

    The title pretty much sums it up. After opening the browser, when I open a new window (private browsing) and load the first page of interest, the focus goes back to the last Firefox window. It works with more than just 1 main and 1 private windows, like for example 3 main and 2 private windows. It repeats after closing all browser windows, waiting for it to unload and opening the browser again. I'm using Windows 7 and the latest version of Firefox, and it's been happening to me for about half a year on two different computers and a notebook (same OS and browser version). It's pretty annoying. How do I fix this?

  • Linux Sound Drivers - Recompiling kernel with ehcd-hcd module

    I just installed Linux Mint and I am trying to get my usb soundcard to work. I am completely new to Linux so I have only been learning about all the important parts of the OS this afternoon. No one I know has compiled kernel so I can't ask anyone. I am following instructions on this site: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Benutzer/BigMc#Final-setup-of-US-122L-US-144 "Recompile your Kernel with ehcd-hcd as a module: Instructions for Ubuntu (german) Change "Device Drivers - USB support - EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support)" to "M" when configuring. Make sure you also install the kernel headers." I know how to do any of these processes. Someone mentioned a package manager. Is recompiling basically in layman's terms reinstallation? Where do I go to the change device drivers? Cheers Edit: I am attempting to be able to use my Tascam US-144 on Linux Mint. Apparently, to use it properly it has to regress to functionality of a former unit (US-122), so according to the instructions a USB port has to be USB 1.0, rather than USB 2.0. I've tried using that ndis** programme for wireless drivers but with no success.
