• How do I do automatic data serialization of data objects in Haskell

  One of the huge benefits in languages that have some sort of reflection/introspecition is that objects can be automatically constructed from a variety of sources. For example in Java I can use the same objects for persisting to a db (with Hibernate) serializing to XML (with JAXB) or serializing to JSON (json-lib). You can do the same in Ruby and Python also usually following some simple rules for properties or annotations for Java. Thus I don't need lots "Domain Transfer Objects". I can concentrate on the domain I am working in. It seems in very strict FP like Haskell and Ocaml this is not possible. Particularly Haskell. The only thing I have seen is doing some sort of preprocessing or meta-programming (ocaml). Is it just accepted that you have to do all the transformations from the bottom upwards? In other words you have to do lot of boring work to turn a data type in haskell into JSON/XML/DB Row object and back again into a data object.

• Sex - in domain name is this bad???

  In short I am working with a company that does trade shows... one of their new domain names has the word 'sex' in but completely innocently. EXAMPLE: www. someproductsexpo .com (Being 'some' 'products' 'expo'). The content is completely inoffensive and I do not see there being any other things that would flag either the web or any emails sent from [email protected] as inappropriate. I was just wondering if any has experiences of any domains like this or comments to add? Thanks

• Yet another Ant + JUnit classpath problem

  Hi, I'm developing an Eclipse SWT application using Eclipse. There are also some JUnit 4 tests, which test some DAO's. But when I try to run the tests via an ant build, all of the tests fail, because the test classes aren't found. Google brought up about a million of people who all have the same problem, but none of their solutions seem to work for me -.- . Maybe this is important too: At first Ant complained that JUnit wasn't in its classpath, but since I put it there (with the eclipse configuration editor) it complains about JUnit being in its classpath twice. • Javascript Hex String to Image

  Hello everyone. I'll cut right to the chase. Right now I am developing a web based application. It has a PHP REST based architecture that serves up XML documents. On many of these documents attributes are hex encoded picture strings. On the client side jQuery AJAX fetches an XML document with a picture in it. I need to display said picture in some <img> tags. However my knowledge on such methods is lacking so here I am asking for help. Goal: JavaScript String variable in hex or base64 HTML displayed image. Cross browser is required, or a hack for the ones that do not support it is fine. Thanks, Gunnar

• Available message types in JMS?

  This is based on a past exam question. The question is asking to describe the four types of message available using JMS. The problem is it says the four, not just four. So it assumes their is only four, no more no less. However according to this site their seems to be five; streams maps text objects bytes *Another book states that XML is another potential type in future versions of JMS. Is XML already available? Am I missing something or is the question just wrong? Thanks.

  Background: This is a request for something that may not exist yet, but I've been meaning to build one for a long time. First I will ask if anyone has seen anything like it yet. Suppose you have an arbitrary JSON structure like the following: { 'str_title':'My Employee List' ,'str_lastmod': '2009-June-15' ,'arr_list':[ {'firstname':'john','lastname':'doe','age':'33',} ,{'firstname':'jane','lastname':'doe','age':'34',} ,{'firstname':'samuel','lastname':'doe','age':'35',} ] } Question: Is there a web-based JSON editor that could take a structure like this, and automatically allow the user to modify this in a user-friendly GUI? Example: Imagine an auto-generated HTML form that displays 2 input-type-text controls for both title and lastmod, and a table of input-type-text controls with three columns and three rows for arr_list ... with the ability to delete or add additional rows by clicking on a [+][X] next to each row in the table. • Parameters with dots on the URI

  In my application, there is a resource, machine, and a nested resource from machine: ip. I want to be able to access the URI of an Ip typing the ip address. The URI should be something like this: /machines/m123/ips/192.168.0.1.xml Where "m123" is the name of the machine and "192.168.0.1" is one of the ips of that machine. The problem here is that rails miss understand the dots from the ip and the format. When I try to access this page, i get: No route matches "/machines/m123/ips/192.168.0.1.xml" And if I replace the dots for any other character it works, witch means that rails isn't handling the dots on the URI. Is there any way to enter a more complex regexp on the routes to make sure rails can treat it the way I want? I'm using rails 2.3.5 and ruby 1.8.7. Thank you.

• How to use a different path name in ProxyPass than the Tomcat context name

  Hello, I am using Tomcat 5.5.9 and Apache 2.x We are trying to use a path name in ProxyPass that is different than the Tomcat context name. ProxyPass /path http://localhost:8080/contextname However, this does not work. When these two are the same then everything works fine. Most examples I see on the net also have the path equal to the Tomcat context name. I am using "context.xml" within the Tomcat context and do NOT have "server.xml" entries. Also, I am using plain httd.conf and NOT using any VirtualHost entries. Any help is appreciated. Regards, Diptenu

• Methodology for Documenting Existing Code Base

  I work as part of a team on an existing application that has no inline documentation, nor does it have technical documentation. As I've been working on various bug reports on the application, I've written a sort of breadcrumb trail for myself - bug numbers in various places so that the next developer can refer to that bug number to see what was going on. My question is thus: What is the most effecient method for documenting this code? Should I document as I touch the area (the virus method, if you will), or should I document from each section on its own, and not follow paths that branch out into other areas of the application? Should I insert inline comments where none previously existed (with the fear that I may end up incorrectly identifying what the code does)? What method would you use to accurately and quickly document a rather large application that has no existing inline documentation, nor inline references to external documentation?

Is there a way to include some sort of configuration or variable defined either in my build.properties for the environment or in a spring custom context properties file that assists the bean xml to determine which triggers should be included in the list? That way, for example, AwesomeTrigger would be called in development but not qa.

• Just too bright

  Like a lot of folks I am using SSMS and VS pretty much all day. But staring at the text on the stark white background can be a bit much for my eyes after a while. I have seen quite a few different “themes” for these apps which change all the colors around to make it easier on your eyes. Some of them are pretty cool but all I really wanted was to dim the background a little not radically change the way everything looked. Since the stock colors for comments, breakpoints, keywords and the like are so familiar I wanted a background that did not interfere with those colors. So I picked the following custom color for the item background. It comes off as a parchment type color. Hue: 42        Red: 244 Sat: 123    Green: 245 Lum: 221    Blue: 224

  What is the best way to track defect sources in tfs? We have various teams for a project like the vulnerability team, the customer, pre-sales, etc. We give a build and these teams independently test it. They do not have access to our tfs system. So they usually send in their defects via email. It will usually be send in an excel format. Our testing team takes these up and logs them into tfs. Sometimes they modify the original defect description (in excel) and add the expected/actual results. Sometimes they miss to cite the source. I am talking about managing the various sources as such. Is there a way we can add these sources into tfs, and actually link this particular source with the defects, with individual comments associated with them (saying where in the source we can find the actual material for the defect).

So my problem is, that json string is not returned in its pure format. I do not want that xml version and xmlns string. I plan to consume the web service on Android later. Can anyone help me? Thanks

• Does mod_rewrite in subdirectories' .htaccess override higher levels?

  I'm using mod_rewrite to map my old directory structure to a new one. I have the following rule in my top-level .htaccess file, and it works: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /blog/archives/(.*) RewriteRule ^.*$ /archives/%1 [L,R=301] As you can guess, this takes http://example.com/blog/archives/00001.php and redirects it to http://example.com/archives/00001.php. But when I add these rewrite rules to the .htaccess file in the /blog directory RewriteEngine on RewriteRule atom.xml$ /atom.xml [L,R=301] the top-level redirect no longer works. If I move the rule in the /blog .htaccess file to the top-levle file both rules work. Can someone explain what is happening here?

• how do I assign a variable to a returned response in jQuery

  I wanted to assign a returned value (just text) to a variable in jQuery. I wrote this: var hm=22; $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "ajax_check_match.php", dataType: "text", success:callback }); function callback(data, status) { // assign ajaxed value to cm variable cm=data; if (hm != cm) { dosomething(); } } But it fails every time. Why is that the cm variable keeps getting undefined when it sends request. I set the php file to return 1 and it still says undefined. I opened ajax_check_match.php in browser and I see "1". I didn't see the point of using XML or JSON since a simple number would suffice. Or do I have to use XML/JSON?

• API for accessing PHP documentation?

  I'm done some Googling, and I've found nothing. I'm scoping out writing a plugin for an editor I use, and I am wondering whether there is a way I can access the PHP documentation via an API? For instance, I'd like to get raw access to the information (besides the comments) located here: http://php.net/file_exists. php.net seemingly uses MediaWiki which provides an API. The tutorial provides the example URL, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=login&format=xml. This does not work for php.net, however (http://php.net/w/api.php?action=login&format=xml). I'm just looking for a little information on how to interface with the PHP documentation.

  How can I make simple format-type customizations to ALL OOTB workflow related emails? I have found that many pre-Sharepoint 2010 posts indicated that OOTB workflow emails are in fact 'alerts', and therefore OOTB workflow emails could be customized using the same technique which is: making a customized version of alerttemplates.xml and even using IAlertNotifyHandler to intercept all alert emails. However, it seems that OOTB workflow and workflow task emails are not affected by changes to my customalerttemplates.xml file (which I do follow with stsadm updatealerttemplates, iisreset, and timer service restart).   Where I work I often have to develop (and bug fix) in an old system (.NET 1) whos code is complete spaghetti - with little thought given to variable names, program structure nor comments. Because of this it takes me ages to understand what bits need changed, and I often 'break' the existing software because I've made a modification. I really really want to spend a couple of months (with colleagues) going through it to refactor but existing developers both can't see the need - nor think theres time for this (the system is massive). I dread having to work on its code as it takes days to fix something only to find out I've broken something else. This obviously makes me look incompetent - so how can I deal with this?

  The last few months I have been spending a lot of time designing (and help design) the developer experience for the areas I contribute to (in future versions of Visual Studio). As a technical person who defines feature sets, it is easy to get engulfed in the pure technical side of things and ignore the details that ultimately make users "love" using the product to achieve their goal, instead of just "having to use" it.   Hi, Our client-server product has the protocol between them as XML over HTTP. Here, the client asks a GET/POST query to the web server and the server responds with XML. The server is written using django. The server has to be on the web because there are many clients across the world using this. The server code uses extensive memoization and also there is very less db queries - most queries dont have any db queries, some of them has max 1. The biggest problem is the speed. Every query takes close to 5 seconds for the reply. The data replied is also very less - in the range of 4-6 Kb. What are the mechanisms to improve speed of the web service? Is this the usual way of writing a client-server? Are there other technologies and are we missing out on it? Thank you K

I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. Regular Expression HTML and CSS HTTP Web programming language (PHP, Ruby, etc.) SQL (command based, not GUI, since most server environment uses terminal only) Javascript and library (jQuery) Versioning (SVN, Git) Unit and functional test Tools Build tools (Ant, NAnt, Maven) Debugging tools (Firebug, Fiddler) Mastering the above makes you a good web developer. Any comments?
