• SQL Saturday 43 (Redmond, WA) Review

  Last Saturday (June 12th) we held a “SQL Saturday” (more about those here) event in Redmond, Washington. The event was held at the Microsoft campus, at the Mixer in our new location called the “Commons”. This is a mall-like area that we have on campus, and the Mixer is a large building with lots of meeting rooms, so it made a perfect location for the event. There was a sign to find the parking, and once there they had a sign to show how to get to the building. Since it’s a secure facility, Greg Larsen and crew had a person manning the door so that even late arrivals could get in. We had about 400 sign up for the event, and a little over 300 attend (official numbers later). I think we would have had a lot more, but the sun was out – and you just can’t underestimate the effect of that here in the Pacific Northwest. We joke a lot about not seeing the sun much, but when a day like what we had on Saturday comes around, and on a weekend at that, you’d cancel your wedding to go outside to play in the sun. And your spouse would agree with you for doing it. We had some top-notch speakers, including Clifford Dibble and Kalen Delany. The food was great, we had multiple sponsors (including Confio who seems to be at all of these) and the attendees were from all over the professional spectrum, from developers to BI to DBA’s. Everyone I saw was very engaged, and when I visited room-to-room I saw almost no one in the halls – everyone was in the sessions. I also saw a much larger Microsoft presence this year, especially from Dan Jones’ team. I had a great turnout at my session, and yes, I was wearing an Oracle staff shirt. I did that because I wanted to show that the session I gave on “SQL Server for the Oracle DBA” was non-marketing – I couldn’t exactly bash Oracle wearing their colors! These events are amazing. I can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate the volunteers and how much work they put into these events, and to you for coming. If you’re reading this and you haven’t attended one yet, definitely find out if there is one in your area – and if not, start one. This is annoying when windows answers the phone before I even hear an audible ring and the hapless caller is saying, "hello. hello" on top of music I have playing. Does anyone know how to tell Windows not to answer the call? I want to be able to don my headset, switch audio to my headset, THEN manually answer the call.

• What are the implications of expanding an internal subnet mask?

  Our network is currently working on a 192.168.0.x subnet, all controlled through DHCP, except for the few main servers who have hard-configured IP address settings. What would I kill if I changed the DHCP-published subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0? The reason for doing this is not because we have a huge sudden influx of machines, but because I'd like to start partitioning specific devices into specific IP ranges (to be neat and tidy). For what its worth, I don' plan on changing the allocated DHCP address range, but rather want to move some of the reserved and excluded DHCP addresses out of the address pool. e.g. printers will be 192.168.2.x I will obviously need to change the subnet mask manually on my manually configured devices.

  I have RHEL running in Virtual Box and my native OS is Win 7. From a purely educational standpoint, I want to be able to access RHEL from Win 7 over SSH. I download putty but don;t know how to make it do what I want. Ideally, I would like to use the linux command prompt at a minimum and preferably access the GUI apps also. IS this possible? • Secure Login add on stopped working after installing BitDefender

  I'm using FF 3.5.4. with Secure Login 0.9.3 add on (lovely little thing). After a lot of persuading, my sys admin finally got to me, and I let him install BitDefender on my machine as well ... and naturally, like all anti virus programs do, it had to screw up something, and it was that add on. It says now in the add onns menu, that it isn't compatible with FF 3.5.4. (which is possible, I don' know, but it did work until one hour ago). What to do to make it work again? All ideas welcomed. I really hate writing all that logins/passwords by ahnd.

  Hi there I'm using Pinnacle Studio 12 to edit some videos and as you can guess it use a lot of resources. The problem is that it eats all my free space from the C drive and after i close the application i don;t get back my free space. I assume it does some swap files but where and why it doesn't delete them? I don't store the project and saved files on C drive. I'm running Pinnacle Studio 12 on a XP sp3 Windows machine. I've tried to clean my system with CClean, but it doesn't find/see where my space is lost! TY

Add more ISL to increase bandwidth when comparing incremental backup with cumulative backup ,incremental backup time is surely shorter than cumulative backup time .But I don's know adding more ISL is allowed in an existing storage system,or can this operation really shorten backup time ?

• Is there a way to batch create DNS slave zones on a new slave DNS server?

  I currently have a DNS server which is serving as a master DNS server for a number of our domains. I want to set up a brand new secondary DNS server. Is there any way I can automatically have BIND on the new server act as a secondary for all the domains on the primary server? In case it matters, I have Webmin on the primary server. I believe Webmin has an option to create a zone as a secondary on another server when creating a new master zone on one server, but I don;t know of any way to batch create secondary zones for a number of existing master zones. Maybe I'm missing something. Is there a way to "batch create" DNS slave zones on a brand new slave DNS server for all the DNS zones on an existing master?

• MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

  On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files. • latex page number position

  I am working on a long document in latex with documentclass book. I need the page number to always be in the upper right corner of each page, even if that page is the first page of a chapter (right now on 1st pages of chatpers, the page number is bottom-centered, on all other pages it's top-right). I control the position of the page number with fancyheader: \usepackage{fancyhdr} \pagestyle{fancy} \lhead{} \chead{} \rhead{\thepage} \lfoot{} \cfoot{} \rfoot{} \renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0pt} Also, I don;t know if the problem is realted but my chapters do not start from the top of the page. There is a white area, then comes chapter X, then a newline with the chapter line. What I also want is the chapter to start from the top of the page. The main question here is how I can get the page number to always appear in the upper right corner, I mention the thing with the chapter title position only in case that might be related. Thanks.

  user user197015 asked on 1th of November the following question: "We have a RAID 6 array (Infortrend EonStor DS S16F) that recently had two disks fail. Immediately prior to replacing these two disks, a third, good, disk was accidentally ejected from the array. After reinserting this disk it is marked as "exiled" by the array's firmware, and so even after replacing the two failed disks with new ones the array refuses to rebuild the logical volume and remains inaccessible. Since the temporarily-ejected disk is still functional and nothing has been written to the array since it was ejected, it seems that it should theoretically be possible to recover all the data on the array, but how can we convince the array to use the data from the "exiled" disk?   Aircel, one of the leading wireless mobile services provider of India has just announced that iPhone 4S will be available to its customers on November 25. You can start pre-booking the phone from November 18 through Aircel website or walking into an Aircel showroom near you. My multiple calls to Aircel customer care division were no use to get the details on the price information. Three times the call got disconnected before a customer care executive tried fetching the details on price and models. We hear from BGR India blog that iPhone 4S price is going start at Rs. 40,000 for a 16GB model and may go up to Rs. 50,000 for a 64 GB model. Airtel, another leading mobile service provider in India, who sells iPhone in India is not sure when they are going to start offering iPhone 4S to its customer. I reached customer care regarding the iPhone 4S and they don’t have any details to offer at the moment. It’s good to see Apple releasing iPhone 4S to India markets just after couple of months of International release. Apple was earlier criticized for releasing iPhone 2, iPhone 3G in India almost an year after the international launch while companies like Nokia release their flagship models just after weeks of international launch. One of the most sought after feature of iPhone 4S is Siri and my friends in US told that it works amazingly good. Siri does not have any problem in understanding Indian English accent and it is very good at recognizing the Indian names in contacts list. But at the same time we do hear reports that Siri does not help much if it’s used outside USA. Considering that Siri is a software it should be possible for Apple to improve it to work better outside USA. But who know the priorities of Apple! • How To Restore Firefox Options To Default Without Uninstalling

  Firefox plugins are awesome and they are the pillars for the huge success of Firefox browser. Plugins vary from simple ones like changing color scheme of the browser to powerful ones likes changing the behavior of the browser itself. Recently I installed one of the powerful Firefox plugins and played around to tweak the behavior of the browser. At the end of my half an hour play, Firefox has completely become useless and stopped rending web pages properly. To continue using Firefox I had to restore it to default settings. But I don’t like to uninstall and then install it again as it’s a time consuming process and also I’ll loose all the plugins I’m using. How did I restore the default settings in a single click? Default Settings Restore Through Safe Mode Options It’s very easy to restore default settings of Firefox with the safe mode options. All we need to do is 1.  Close all the Firefox browser windows that are open 2. Launch Firefox in safe mode 3. Choose the option Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults 4. Click on Make Changes and Restart button. Note: When Firefox restore the default settings, it erases all the stored passwords, browser history and other settings you have done. That’s all. • Mobile Java, shiny and new: Nokia Asha and Nokia SDK 2.0

  Nokia has announced a series of new S40 phones called “Asha” – mass-market devices with smart-phone features: Good-sized touch screens, 1 GHz processors, WiFi connectivity, social networking integration, and more. Prices starting around €60 retail. In case you don’t know, the S40 series is built on Java ME and has a huge deployed base in many parts of the world where price/performance is critical. Along with the new phones, Nokia is also making available the new Nokia SDK 2.0 for Java (beta), which enables developers to build rich Java applications with multi-touch, sensor support, an improved Maps API, and the Lightweight UI Toolkit (LWUIT) (more API & tools details). Furthermore, there is a host of developer information, the remote device access service, and even a porting guide to help you port your Android app to the new Asha platform. Last, but not least: More and better options to monetize your applications. Nokia has enabled in-app advertising and in-app purchasing, and improved the way applications can be discovered by customers. Nokia has seen downloads from the Nokia app store rise by 63%, now totaling billions. From what I’m hearing, the revenue opportunities on S40 for developers are often way better than what is typical for other smart-phone platforms (where competition is huge and consumers are fickle).   Vacations are very relaxing – no need to reply to endless mails, no marathon meeting or conference calls. It’s all about fun during the vacation. The troubles begin as you near the end of vacation and plans to think about getting back to work. Once we are back to work after a long vacation there will be many things to worry – a pile of snail mails, hundreds of unread emails,  a flood of phone calls to answer and a stream of scheduled meetings. How to handle all the backlog and catch up quickly with the inflow of work? Here is a management tip from Harvard Business Review blog to get back to work the right way after a long vacation Block off your morning. Make sure you don’t have any meetings scheduled or big projects due. Then before you open your inbox, pause and think about your work priorities. As you make your way through emails and voicemails, focus on returning the messages that are connected to what matters most. Defer or delegate things that aren’t top priority. And remember it will probably take more than one day to get caught up, so be easy on yourself.
