• Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

  Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well. Details of my system OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Processor: 2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 Memory: 448 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory Board: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • Does anyone provide a Skype connection service?

  Is there a way of offering Skype access to incoming calls while keeping all telephony traffic over our chosen business telephony provision? Is there a 3rd party who can route incoming Skype calls to our telephone system? The business has had requests from contacts wanting to call us via Skype, but we want to keep all telephony via our PBX and phone lines as our geographic location limits our available internet bandwidth. We also prevent installation of non-standard applications on desktops and do not want to add Skype to our build. I was wondering if there were any 3rd parties that provide a connection service that would allow our contacts to call via Skype and us receive the calls via our phone system.

• Vanilla TeX Live 2009 on Ubuntu

  I installed TeX Live 2009 by following the instructions at http://www.tug.org/texlive/quickinstall. Then, to make my local TeX Live installation work with the Ubuntu package management system, I followed the instructions on http://www.tug.org/texlive/debian.html. That is, I performed the following steps. $ sudo aptitude install equivs $ mkdir /tmp/tl-equivs && cd /tmp/tl-equivs $ equivs-control texlive-local # I replaced the contents of texlive-local by http://www.tug.org/texlive/debian-control-ex.txt $ equivs-build texlive-local $ sudo dpkg -i texlive-local_2009-1~1_all.deb However, when I go about installing kile through the Ubuntu package management system, it requires me to install a lot of dependencies that are already provided by my texlive-local package. Does any one have a suggestion to fix this problem?

• WPF or WinForms for Game Development and learning resources?

  I'm looking to create a game framework for my own personal use... I want to use WPF, but I'm unsure if that is a wise choice... The games I will be writing should not require high performance graphics, so I am hoping to build on native classes... I do not want to rely on external DLL's unless I generate them myself. The games will be for young children, say 4 to 8. Most will be learning puzzles or simple shooters. The most advanced will be a platform game (non-scrolling screen like the old Atari Miner 2049er game). I think I know how to write something like the old Atari Chopper Command (partially written and my 4 year old loves it, but I used WinForms and GDI), Pac-Man, Tetris, Astroids, Space Invaders, Slider Puzzle, but I do not really know how to write the platform game... In my mind, I'm getting caught in collision detection and how to make a character jump and how to make a character walk up a slope or steps... Can anyone point me to information on developing a platform game in C#? Would you suggest WinForms or WPF for game development? I'm not looking for great graphics and speed, just entertaining game play...

• Step by Step screencasts to do Behavior Driven Development on WCF and UI using xUnit

  I am trying to encourage my team to get into Behavior Driven Development (BDD). So, I made two quick video tutorials to show how BDD can be done from early requirement collection stage to late integration tests. It explains breaking user stories into behaviors, and then developers and test engineers taking the behavior specs and writing a WCF service and unit test for it, in parallel, and then eventually integrating the WCF service and doing the integration tests. It introduces how mocking is done using the Moq library. Moreover, it shows a way how you can write test once and do both unit and integration tests at the flip of a config setting. Watch the screencast here: Doing BDD with xUnit, Subspec and on a WCF Service  Warning: you might hear some noise in the audio in some places. Something wrong with audio bit rate. I suggest you let the video download for a while and then play it. If you still get noise, go back couple of seconds earlier and then resume play. It eliminates the noise.  The next video tutorial is about doing BDD to do automated UI tests. It shows how test engineers can take behaviors and then write tests that tests a prototype UI in isolation (just like Service Contract) in order to ensure the prototype conforms to the expected behaviors, while developers can write the real code and build the real product in parallel. When the real stuff is done, the same test can test the real stuff and ensure the agreed behaviors are satisfied. I have used WatiN to automate UI and test UI for expected behaviors. • Editing tags in bunch of MP3 files?

  I have a bunch of files whose filename looks like "<Track> - <Title> - <Artist>.mp3". I'd like to rewrite their MP3 Title tag to be "<Track> - <Title>.mp3" so that each song is displayed correctly on my elcheapo MP3 player. Since I rarely edit MP3 files anyway, MP3 Tag Tools 1.2 Build 008 from 2003 was good enough, but I can't figure out how to do this with this application. I just tried MP3Tag 2.46, but couldn't figure out if it can do this (created a new Action, to no avail). I also tried TagScanner 5.1.558, without success. Does someone know of a good, free Windows application that can do this? Thank you.

• The emergence of Atlassian's Bamboo (and a free SQL Source Control license offer!)

  The rise in demand for database continuous integration has forced me to skill-up in various new tools and technologies, particularly build servers. We have been using JetBrain's TeamCity here at Red Gate for a couple of years now, having replaced the ageing CruiseControl.NET, so it was a natural choice for us to use this for our database CI demos. Most of our early adopter customers have also transitioned away from CruiseControl, the majority to TeamCity and Microsoft's TeamBuild. However, more recently, for reasons we've yet to fully comprehend, we've observed a significant surge in the number of evaluators for Atlassian's Bamboo. I installed this a couple of weeks back to satisfy myself that it works seamlessly with Red Gate tools. As you would expect Bamboo's UI has the same clean feel found in any Atlassian tool (we use JIRA extensively here at Red Gate). In the coming weeks I will post a short step-by-step guide to setting up SQL Server continuous integration using the Red Gate command lines. To help us further optimize the integration between these tools I'd be very keen to hear from any Bamboo users who also use Red Gate tools who might be willing to participate in usability tests and other similar research in exchange for Amazon vouchers. • Using GlusterFS for simple replication

  Hi, newbie question. I need to build this: /shared folder ~500GB of files, ~1MB each one. Two boxes (server1 and server2) connected by a 1Gbs LAN Every box needs to get r/w access to the files, so their are both clients I want that the files replicated on both boxes, every time a file is written in one server the same file should be present in the other one. My questions regarding GlusterFS: It'll duplicate the files on the same box?. For example the files are on /shared and the mount in /mnt/shared. It'll take 1GB space on every server? Instead, should I use the filesystem directly, locally writing on /shared? Does the replication work in this way without mountin a client? Also, if anyone know any other way to acomplish this setup I'll be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

  I'm trying to upload packages to my PPA for the first time. I want to use the PPA for customized versions of the OpenStack Compute (nova) project, so I tried to do a test by uploading packages corresponding to the bexar release of this project (lp:nova/bexar), with a new version number and changelog entry. • IIS 8 Random 503 service unavailable

  We migrated a busy website to Windows Server 2012 with IIS 8. The website randomly gives the error "503 service unavailable" after an user presses F5 the error is gone again. The website is build in ASP.NET MVC 3. The website runs on one application pool, with default settings There are around 500 to 900 concurrent users on the website during the day, and the error happens more often when there are more 650 users. The CPU and the memory use on the server is stable. There is nothing about the 503 errors in the application log, the IIS log and the event log. Does anyone has any clue what the problem can be or how we can trace the the problem?

• How do projects manage chef cookbooks when multiple teams manage multiple sets of cookbooks?

  I am wondering how projects that have multiple component teams manage their sets of cookbooks? We are trying to figure out how we can have an ops team provide a set of "common component" cookbooks that can be re-used by other teams that will also write their own cookbooks. For example, the ops team should own the Java cookbook, while a component manages their cookbooks written for their component or build engines. From my little experience with chef server, this kind of workflow seems to not be well supported since the server stores and manages all cookbooks - so there is a potential to overwrite a cookbook written by another team. How do other projects deal with this type of problem?

• IIS7 folder permissions

  I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

• Unable to Install VirtualBox Due to Missing Kernel Module

  I am trying to install VirtualBox on my Ubuntu. I first tried to sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose in a terminal, but after the configuration step, it fails with an error: No suitable module for running kernel found When proceeding with starting virtualbox, I get this error: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-ose-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I tried the package from http://www.virtualbox.org/, but starting VirtualBox fails with: WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.38-8-generic-pae) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I ran sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but it fails too: * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ] * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ] * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae cannot be found at /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build or /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/source. * Failed, trying without DKMS * Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules * Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong The contents of /var/log/vbox-install.log. As I am stuck, I also tried to install kernel-devel with yum, still fruitless: root@ubuntu# yum install kernel-devel Setting up Install Process No package kernel-devel available. Nothing to do Now I've no idea how to correct this. Any ideas?

• How to install Apache 2.4.3 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a clean, fresh OS of Ubuntu 12.04 on my VPS. My goal is to install WordPress. I want to install the latest version of Apache (2.4.3) but I'm encountering two problems. I'm following instructions like this & this. Both produced the same errors. The first I encounter after running "./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --with-included-apr --with-included-apr-util " the system says "It must specify an install prefix, a build directory, or an apr-config file" The second I encounter immediately afterwards, when I attempt to run make or make install. "No targets specified and no makefile found. stop." I honestly have not been able to find a solution for either, and I'm now looking for some help from the community. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

However, management wants to use it as a sales tool. They want more attractive reports that they can hand off to clients and prospective clients to show off how slick our monitoring software is. Is there a third-party solution that will generate more attractive reports based on data in the WUG database? I have already suggested using reporting services to build our own reports, but that idea was rejected.

  Hi! I need to build a fault tolerant, highly available key/value storage (no posix, only same functionaluty as S3) using cheap existing hardware. The storage should be able to handle several billions of items. The maximum size of items is around 1GB, most are only several KB. What's the best software/ filesystem for this task? I already had a brief look at mogilefs, mongodb (grid-fs) & glusterfs but I'm not really sure which is stable & fault tolerant enough. The simpler the setup and later expansion the better :). Corin

Now we've got: open source packages on Ubuntu that don't quite work out of the box (details on request). the actual source behind them, with a build process that depends on the c-shell and other obsolescences, available from two competing locations. a commercial packaging from Oracle a commercial package from Univa What I am really wishing for is something with the basic capabilities of this that is simple to install and maintain. Heck, I'd take a front-end to hadoop that just queues and distributes simple shell-script-defined jobs.

• Where does Picasa store albums?

  For people searching, the question might also be phrased: How do I restore Picasa albums from backup? When I reinstalled my computer and restored my photos from backup, some of my albums showed up, but many didn't. I've found the following info: Picasa on Windows stores (stored?) album info in these places: Vista: C:\Users\<myaccount>\AppData\Local\Google\Picasa2Albums\ XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<myaccount>\Local Settings\Application Data\google\Picasa2Albums\ I restored that folder and was still missing many of my albums. That folder also contained a folder of backups, but the most recent one was from a long time ago and I've created albums since then. According to https://support.google.com/picasa/bin/picasa.google.com/support/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=release_notes.cs, since the Dec 8, 2011 build, Picasa saves album info in .ini file(s). This probably explains the albums that I do see. http://katelharrison.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-restore-picasa-albums-mac.html has some great info on restoring albums on Macs, but the folder structure seems to be different there than on Windows.

  I'm trying to make a solution in Visual Studio that consists of a VC++ DLL and a VB.Net application. To figure this out, I created a VC++ Class Library project, with the following code (I removed all the junk the wizard creates): mathfuncs.cpp: #include "MathFuncs.h" namespace MathFuncs { double MyMathFuncs::Add(double a, double b) { return a + b; } } mathfuncs.h: using namespace System; namespace MathFuncs { public ref class MyMathFuncs { public: static double Add(double a, double b); }; } This compiles quite happily. I can then add a VC++ console project to the solution, add a reference to the original project for this new project, and call it as follows: test.cpp: using namespace System; int main(array<System::String ^> ^args) { double a = 7.4; int b = 99; Console::WriteLine("a + b = {0}", MathFuncs::MyMathFuncs::Add(a, b)); return 0; } This works just fine, and will build to test.exe and mathsfuncs.dll. However, I want to use a VB.Net project to call the DLL. To do this, I add a VB.Net project to the solution, make it the startup project, and add a reference to the original project. Then, I attempt to use it as follows: MsgBox(MathFuncs.MyMathFuncs.Add(1, 2)) However, when I run this code, it gives me an error: "Could not load file or assembly 'MathFuncsAssembly, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format." Do I need to expose the method somehow? I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Professional.
