How can I protect my .NET assemblies from decompilation?

One if the first things I learned when I started with C# was the most important one. You can decompile any .NET assembly with Reflector or other tools. Many developers are not aware of this fact and most of them are shocked when I show them their source code. Protection against decompilation is still a difficult task. I am still looking for a fast, easy and secure way to do it. I don't want to obfuscate my code so my method names will be a,b,c or so. Reflector or other tools should be unable to recognize my application as .NET assembly at all. I know about some tools already but they are very expensive. Is there any other way to protect my applications? EDIT: The reason for my question is not to prevent piracy. I only want to stop competitors from reading my code. I know they will and they already did. They even told me so. Maybe I am a bit paranoid but business rivals reading my code doesn't make me feel good.

Synchronizing screencasting (ffmpeg) and capturing from the webcam (OpenCV)

As from my previous questions, I am trying to build a simple eye tracker. Decided to start from a Linux version (run Ubuntu). To complete this task one should organize screencasting and webcam capturing in such way that frames from both streams exactly match each other and there is the same number of frames in each of them totally. Screencasting fsp fully depends on the camera's fsp, so each time we get the image from the webcam we can potentially grab a screen frame and stay happy. However, all the tools for the fast screencasting, like ffmpeg, for example, return the .avi file as the result and require the fsp already known to be started. From the other side, tools like Java+Robot or ImageMagick seem to require around 20ms to return the .jpg screenshot, which is pretty slow for the task. But they may be requested right after each time the webcam frame is grabbed and provide the needed synchronization. So the sub-questions are: 1. Does the USD camera's frame rate vary during a single session? 2. Are there any tools which provide fast screencasting frame by frame? 3. Is there any way to make ffmpeg push a new frame to the .avi file only when program initiates this request? For my task I may either use C++ or Java. I am, actually, an interface designer, not the driver programmer, and this task seems to be pretty low-level. I would be grateful for any suggestion and tip!

Is Git ready to be recommended to my boss?

I want to recomment Git to my boss as a new source control system, since we're stuck in the 90s with VSS (ouch), but are the tools and 3rd party support good enough yet? Specifically I'm talking about GUI front-ends similar to TortoiseSVN, decent visual diff/merge support, as well as stuff like email commit notifications and general support from 3rd parties like IDEs and build systems. Even though this will be used by programmers, we really need this kind of stuff in our team. I don't want to leave everyone stuck with a new tool, and even a new source control paradigm (distributed), with nothing but a command-line app and some online tutorials. This would be a step backwards. So what do you think... is Git ready? What decent tools exist for Git and what third party development apps support it? EDIT: My original question was pretty vague so I'm updating it to specifically ask for a list of available tools and 3rd party support for Git. Maybe we can get a community wiki post with a list of stuff. I also do not consider 'use subversion' to be an adequate answer. There are other reasons to use a distributed source control system other than offline editing - private and cheap branches being one of them.

Clicking on MenuItem without clicking on the text

I've got a Menu, and I want to click on the menu, but not on the text if you guys know what i mean. The MenuItem has a border, or something like this, but when I click on it it won't redirect to the page I want unless I click on text. Is it possible to click on the whole "Button" and redirect or do what is need to do? Eclipse 3.7 Classic Nightmare - ADT Installation

I've been trying to install the ADT for Eclipse Classic 3.7 to no avail. From what I've seen on searches, the general consensus seems to be to update the software, but alas I cannot do that, either. BELOW: An example of the error message received when trying to update Eclipse, or when attempting to install from a web location. Some sites could not be found. See the error log for more detail. Unable to read repository at http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.7/content.xml. Cannot assign requested address: JVM_Bind I followed the troubleshooting recommendations of Google/Android's developer section, and attempted to install ADT via archive. BELOW: The resulting error from attempting to install via archive. Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. I'm using the most up-to-date versions of anything I can think of (ADT, Eclipse, SDK Tools etc). I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, and am using the 64bit version of Eclipse Classic.

Code Coverage tool for BlackBerry

I'm looking for a code coverage tool that I can use with a BlackBerry application. I'm using J2ME-Unit for Unit Testing and I want to see how much of my code is being covered by my tests. I've tried using Cobertura for J2ME but after days of wrestling with it I failed to get any results from it. (I believe that the instrumentation is un-done by the RAPC compilation). And despite this message, the project seems to be dead. I've looked at JInjector but the project seems very incomplete. There is little (if any) documentation and although it claims to be able to work with BlackBerry projects, I haven't seen any places where it has been used for that purpose. I've played with the project quite a bit but to no avail. I've also tried the "Coverage" view in the BlackBerry JDE, even though I use Eclipse for development. The view stays permanently blank, regardless of clicking "Refresh" and running the application from the JDE. I've looked at most of the tools on this SO thread, but they won't work with J2ME/BlackBerry projects. Has anyone had any success with any code coverage tools on the BlackBerry? If so, what tools have you used? How have you used them? If anyone has managed to get JInjector or Cobertura for J2ME to work with a BlackBerry project, what did you have to do to get it working?

Styles for one component (described in css) override styles for another components. For example, one component has ... <ul class="items"> ... and another component has it too. But that ul's has different meaning in these two components. On the other hand, i want to "inherit" some styles for one component from another. For example: Let, we have one component, called "post" <div class="post">  <ul class="items"> ... </ul> </div And another component, called "new-post": <div class="new-post">  <ul class="items"> ... </ul>  <div class="tools">...</div> </div Post and new-post have something similar ("post's stuff") and i want to make CSS rules to handle both "post" and "new-post" New post has "subcomponents", for example - editing tools, that has also: <ul class="items"> This is where CSS rules starting to interfer - some rules, targeted for ul.items (in post and new-post) applies subcomponent of new-post, called "tools" On the one hand - i want to inherit some styles On the other hand, i want to get better incapsulation What are the best practices, to avoid such kind of problems ?

eclipse - starting with android sdk

I want start programming for android.. What I have: -Windows 7 -Eclipse Classic 4.2 -Downloaded all there required files - http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/adding-packages.html -ADT Plugin I want install new ADT plugin.. at first I tried to download it from http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse, I add it, but if i selected it there is only "pending.." and nothing has load..(maybe internet connection?I have selected Native connection in preferences after pending it wrotes: Unable to connect to repository http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/content.xml org.eclipse.equinox.p2.core.ProvidesException ) Thats why I download ADT plugin. So if I select downloaded ADT plugin - content of it load - developer tools and ndk plugin so I select all and click next. UML diagrams that are actually pretty?

I'm looking for a diagramming software that would produce good looking output. It doesn't need to support everything (or even much) from UML, is doesn't need to have code engineering functions or anything, it just needs to produce visually interesting output. Here is a couple of samples of products that I consider ugly / not good enough: Visio with default UML stencils (didn't find better looking ones), Enterprise Architect, Dia, ArgoUML and many other "professional" UML tools. A couple of visually compelling tools that I considered (but found issues with): Visual Studio class diagrams - just for .NET classes but the output is miles better than what UML tools typically produce NClass - similar to VS's class diagrams but I could not find the "pretty", blue skin anywhere yuml.me - very nice but lacking some advanced layout options. I have to say that I find their style almost ideal for high-level diagrams - they look sketchy which is good. Balsamiq - I think Joel used this for hginit.com and I liked it. However, it's not suited for creating software diagrams so I can imagine it would be quite a lot of work MS Word has actually quite a good graphics engine but I'd rather leave this as a choice of the last resort I'd be grateful for any good tips.

IE7 & 8 not fireing jQuery click events for elements appended inside a table

I have an IE bug that I'm not sure how to fix. Using jQuery I'm dynamically moving a menu to appear on an element on mouseover. It works as expected in everything else. You can see the behaviour in a basic demo here. In the demo you can see two examples of the issue: The image behind the buttons should change on hover (done with a CSS :hover selector). It works on the first mouseover but then persists. The click event doesn’t fire – however with the dev tools you can manually call it and it is still subscribed. You can see (2) in IE8's dev tools: Open page in IE8 Open dev tools Select "Script" tab and "Console" sub-tab Type: $j('#testFloat div.ico:first').click() to manually call any subscribed events There will be an alert on the page This means that I'm not losing the event subscriptions, they're still there, IE's just not calling them when I click. Does anyone know why this bug occurs (other than just because of IE's venerable engine)? Is there a workaround? Could it be something that I'm doing wrong that just happens to work as expected in everything else?

Is this feasbile with GIS?

I'm just getting myself to familiarize with GIS but i like to know before hand if the following is feasible with current GIS apps/tools... I get the point for an address by geocoding. Easy part. Now if the point falls within a boundary (may be a city/county/state) then i need to get the data (any id/flag) associated with the boundary. Based on the id/flag i then apply some business logic. My question is... How do i define the boundary? What tools should i use for it? How can i store the boundary definition in database in order to check if the point falls within it? This has to be done in the back end and not in visual maps as we don't intend to show/use maps. How do i associate my custom data (id/flag) with the above boundary definition? Hope i'm having right assumption on capabilities of GIS. Most of examples what i see is around people trying to show maps with data which is exactly not what i'm looking for. Also please suggest me some tools/books on this.

Wordpress paths issue

I have set a crawler up in wordpress which grabs stocks data and writes to file which when a user enters a symbol/ticker the variable is read and if it matches the data of a previous crawl for that particular companies data will echo the text file on page, if no data is found the crawler then sets off grabs it and writes to file to save for the next time that symbol is used. The problem im having is that everything works groovey apart from one thing, when the content is written to file it saves it in the WP root and not inside a subfolder of the theme, basicaly this means that root becomes untidy very quickly and also should the theme be used on another site then its not practical as some important info is missing. I have tried bloginfo and absolute both return the same failure. Ways to support manually executed tests? (that can be used on a Mac)

Are there any tools that can be used on a Mac to support manually executed tests? I have a number of tests that I'm executing manually and which I'm currently documenting using merely a plain text file. "Tools" can be interpreted rather loosely here, anything that's a step up from the plain text file would be useful: a template for some suitable application, supporting AppleScript scripts, a web-based system, a full-blown application ... Some things that would be great to have better support for (see also the example below): Checking off each step while you're manually executing the test. Showing the next step(s) in a small window that is always kept in front of all other windows. Automatically updating the 'last tested' and 'using svn revision' info. Keeping a record of all previous testing rounds (not just the last one). ... Any suggestions for any such "tools" that can be used on a Mac? An example (faked) entry from the plain text file to give you a better idea of what I'm looking for: - Check that exported web pages render properly in Safari. Last tested: 2010-03-24 Using SVN revision: 1000 Steps: - Open a new document. - Add some items to the document. - Export the document to a web page "Test.html" in a new folder "Export Test" on the Desktop. - Open the web page in Safari, script: tell application "Finder" open file "Test.html" of folder "Export Test" of desktop end tell Expected results: - The web page should appear properly with all items shown. Clean up steps: - Remove the folder "Export Test" from the Desktop. ( Note: for those unaware, the snippet of AppleScript in the above can be executed from most text editing applications through the Services menu by selecting the snippet and using: the application menu Services Script Editor Run as AppleScript. This is quite useful to automate some steps for tests that are difficult to automate as a whole. )

WiX major upgrade refuses to replace existing file!

Hello! I have inherited this project with a WiX installer, and am required to make this version usefully upgrade the previous one! My problem comes in replacing the database files with new versions. No, the problem is not that they are locked, I can replace them manually, and in fact now ONE of them is replaced, while the other is not. Please, please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I've tried several other solutions (including registry keys as KeyPath instead of CompanionFile) but nothing is quite working. Stuck on preserving config file in WIX major upgrade!

ARGH! Wix is driving me crazy. So, of course I have seen the many posts both here on stackoverflow and elsewhere about WiX and major upgrades. I inherited this software project using WiX and am releasing a new version. I need this new version to leave ONLY the one configuration file if it's present, and replace everything else. This installer works EXCEPT no matter what I have done so far, the new XML file replaces the old on every install. Even attempting to use NeverOverwrite="yes" and even trying and messing back and forth with OnlyDetect="no"! I am simply stuck and humbly request a little guidance. Hide annoying VMware hint "To release input, press Ctrl+Alt"

I'm running VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 7 x64. In the guest OS (also Windows 7 x64) I have VMWare Tools installed, but the VMWare Tools service is disabled. I run the VM in full screen mode and the VMWare toolbar at the top often displays this tooltip: To release input, press Ctrl+Alt This tooltip obscures a part of the VM (often the menu of a program I'm using) and it's annoying as hell. Going out of full screen mode and into it again gets rid of it, but only until I mouse over that toolbar and then it reappears! How do I get rid of it, once and for all? I tried adding hints.hideAll = "TRUE" to the .vmx file for the VM and to preferences.ini and neither of those helped.

Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. Technical information (for administrator): TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service. So I head on over to my event viewer on the server. Under Application, I see one warning and two errors. Cannot connect with Cisco VPN but can connect with ShrewSoft VPN

EDIT: We connected an air card to the computer to use a different Internet connection and using the Cisco software, we were able to successfully connect to our VPN server. I just don't understand why the ShrewSoft VPN client would connect but the Cisco connection won't. I'm not our network admin so sorry if I butcher some of the terminology. I have a computer at remote site that connects to our network through Cisco VPN. It uses the Cisco VPN software to do so. The problem is that the computer at this site cannot connect to our VPN because it is getting error "Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding." To see if perhaps something on their network was blocking the connection, I installed the ShrewSoft VPN client on the computer, imported our .pcf file and connected with no problem. I have tried two different versions of the Cisco VPN software (4.8.0.* and 5.0.03.*) and have the same problem. I installed Wireshark on the computer and have confirmed (while trying to connect through Cisco) that the computer is trying to contact the VPN server but is not receiving a response. We are not having any other problems regarding users not being able to connect. I'm at a loss at what else to check. I'll be monitoring this and have access to the computer at any time.

Install Git under OSX Mavericks

I've just completed a fresh install of Mavericks. Then I went to git-scm.com and downloaded the Mac installer and installed Git from that. Now whenever I go into the terminal and type git I get this: xcode-select: note: no developer tools were found at '/Applications/Xcode.app', requesting install. Choose an option in the dialog to download the command line developer tools. I also this dialog: The git installer installed git into /usr/local/git/bin and I've added this to my PATH but still no dice. What am I doing wrong here? I don't want to install xcode just so I can use git.

Ideal Bacula appliance?

I'm an intern at a small company and we (the IT department of two) manage <100 client computers and a handful of servers. Currently we're using a company's appliance to handle backup; it does a small backup every night and a full backup every weekend, and a guy comes on Wednesday to take an offsite backup drive (and gives back last week's drive to swap with it). Lately this system, mainly the appliance, has been having problems, so we are looking for an alternative. I'm researching other companies but also looking into what we might expect from trying to do this ourselves. There will undoubtedly be a large learning curve, but hey, that's what serverfault is for, right? :) So anyway I was looking at Bacula. Feature list sounds great, documentation is plentiful, but it's only software. So my question is, what is the ideal backup server to run the Bacula server software on? And not only the server but other related appliances. Our current backup appliance uses only hard drives, not tape drives. It has several plugged into it at one time, in hotswap bays on the front of the machine. I couldn't help but notice though, it's hardly more than Windows XP with hard drive bays, a PCI eSATA card (which connects to another appliance extension piece with 2 more bays), and their software. Since the company will take back their appliance if/when we cancel with them, where can I go to configure a server with these kinds of things? Maybe I'm being naive, I'm sure Dell (and any other computer company) sells them in the small business section of their website, but I wanted to make sure that there's not some other more recommended place that other companies are getting their hardware from, and that I don't need anything special for Bacula.

Spreadsheet RDBMS

I'm looking for a software (or set of software) that will let me combine spreadsheet and database workflows. Data entry in spreadsheet to enable simple entry from clipboard, analysis based on joins, unions and aggregates and pivot/data pilot summaries. So far I've only found either spreadsheets OR db applications but no good combination. OO base with calc for tables doesn't support aggregates f.ex. Google Spreadsheet + Visualizaion API doesn't support unions or joins, zoho db doesn't let me paste from clipboard. Any hints on software that could be used? Basically I'm trying to do some analysis of my personal bank transactions. Problem 1, ETL. The data has to be moved from my bank to a database. My current solution is to manually copy and paste the data into one spread sheet per account from my internet bank. Pains: Not very scriptable. Lots of scrolling to reach the point to paste. Have to apply sorting and formatting to the pasted data each time. Problem 2, analysis. I then want to aggregate the different accounts in one sweep to track transfers per type of transfer over all accounts.
