• Apple Mac OS X Mavericks inside Virtual Box

  I have a few questions regarding Mac OS X and OS virtualization. A. Given all the legal restrictions imposed by Apple on Apple products, I would like to know whether it is legal to install the new and freely downloadable Apple Mac OS X Mavericks inside Oracle Virtual Box. B. What about older OS X versions such as Mountain Lion? C. How many machines can I install it on. What if I don't use the Mac to which the OS is downloaded but only use it on Virtual Box, and prefer to, say, install Linux on the Mac computer so that it doesn't become unusable due to the single user license policy and me running the OS on Windows 7 within Virtual Box? D. I have a PC running Windows 7 but would like to get the OS off a second had Mac I'm planning to purchase for this purpose. How must we proceed to copy the OS to an ISO so that I can install it on Windows 7? I am unfamiliar with Macs and do not know what software to use for the purpose, nor where the OS is downloaded to (as an ISO, .app executable, .gz or .zip file or whatever). If anyone could provide some guidance with the process I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks.

• OSX telnet not working from localhost

  Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result ! • OSX esc key stops working (randomly)

  I have a 2011 macbook Air with OS X Mountain Lion (I've upgraded from Lion). And ever since upgrading my escape key randomly stops working. And it's not that the keyboard on the laptop would be damaged as the same happens if I use apple's bluetooth keyboard. So I'm guessing it's a software issue. Also in some cases pressing ctrl+esc achieves the same thing as just esc so I'm 100% it's not a hardware problem. Does anybody have any idea what this might be all about and how to fix it? edit: the escape key stops working completely but it starts working again after I restart the computer. edit2: this usually happens after the computer wakes from sleep. So it's not like that is just stopps working in the middle of using it, but rather after I put it to sleep (or just close the lid) and then open it again. Has nobody got the same issue? Is there a better place to ask OSX related questions than SuperUser maybe?

• Install Git under OSX Mavericks

  I've just completed a fresh install of Mavericks. Then I went to git-scm.com and downloaded the Mac installer and installed Git from that. Now whenever I go into the terminal and type git I get this: xcode-select: note: no developer tools were found at '/Applications/Xcode.app', requesting install. Choose an option in the dialog to download the command line developer tools. I also this dialog: The git installer installed git into /usr/local/git/bin and I've added this to my PATH but still no dice. What am I doing wrong here? I don't want to install xcode just so I can use git.

• How to blacklist a problem wifi access point by MAC address in OSX

  So I am a small mac-user cog in a larger windows-based network machine. The network here works fine for most everyone else (on PCs), but I have random timeouts and issues with the Wifi. Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my Airport on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid? All of the points are on the same network SSID.

I have 3 gmail accounts & 1 yahoo account. In windows, I use Microsoft outlook or microsoft outlook express. But In mac is there any inbuilt software for it ? If not, is that any freely available mail client for mac osx ? ----------------------- 2 ---------------------------- One more thing, My system administrators has banned regular gmail & yahoo sites. Means I can't use gmail or yahoo site for mailing. Ok. I don't want to break my office rules - but what about my mails on gmail & yahoo, they are really very important for me.   hi i am using mac osx 10.6.3 (snow leopard) and sometimes when i have a window selected the file menu doesnt update in relation to the window im currently on. i have to click around on different windows then go back to the window i want for the file menu to display. this really annoys me - the one thing that pisses me off on mac system. i wish they had copied how microsoft is doing it. anyone know a fix for this? or its something i have to live with.

• Screen is greyed out after power failure shutdown: Mac OSX

  When the battery power is down and the unit not plugged in the computer is forced into a sleep mode requiring pushing the start button when power is re-connected. The initial desktop screen appears to be greyed out and is unresponsive with a timer bar which, when the timing sequence is complete restores an active desktop. I can't find any reference to this phenomenon in the OSX literature I have. Any pointers to where I can get more information? Perhaps I am using the wrong search criteria?

• How to update OSX when space is tight?

  Software Update has notified me of a new OSX system update (including the Mac App Store). It claims to be about 1.6GB in size. I have 4.6GB of free space on my hard drive. However, when I attempt to actually run the update, it fails because it claims to need 6.9GB of free space. Is there any particular reason Software Update needs so much space beyond the downloaded file size and are there any work arounds? Thanks.

  There is a LAN comprising several mac machines (iMac, Mac Pro, macbook etc.), Airport Express router and Mac Mini Server running OS X Server 10.8 (Mountain Lion Server). I need to share a folder on Mac Mini Server by FTP. What did I try so far: Made special partition for FTP Access, call it "Reports" So shared folder would be "/Volumes/Reports" Gave access every user and group in system, and also enabled guest access. I checked posix acl, which is "rwxrwxrwx", I checked sharing settings in "Preferences.app" and "Server.app" Checked that users have access to FTP service Enabled FTP in Server.app I tried access to shared folder (by FTP): via Cyberduck via Finder via shell: ftp server.local And what I got: $ ftp [email protected] Trying 10.0.2.2... Connected to server.local. 220 10.0.2.2 FTP server (tnftpd 20100324+GSSAPI) ready. 331 User ftpuser accepted, provide password. • Cannot bind OSX to AD

  I'm trying to get an mac mini running snow leopard server to join a windows domain here. The windows domain server is running Windows server 2008. When I go to "Accounts" in my System Preferences, and lick on "Join", I get this error: "Unable to add server. Node name wasn't found. (2000)" In my console messages I find this: 10-04-06 11:42:25 AM System Preferences1452 -[ODCAddServerSheetController handleOtherActionError: gotError: Error Domain=com.apple.OpenDirectory Code=2000 UserInfo=0x2004f2f80 "Custom call 82 to Active Directory failed.", Node name wasn't found. I specified a FQDN for the domain server, so I am totally confused as to why it would list "domain = com.apple...." in that error. I've tried firing up the Directory Utility and trying to join a domain via the Active Directory option there. Again I fill in the FQDN, and the proper administrator/password acount info. Now I get a different error: "Invalid Domain An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com)." If anyone has any pointers or suggestions this would be appreciated.

  I have an issue with one of my computer on my network. It is an iMac running OS X 10.5.8. The issue is accessing certain websites. For instance, one of these websites is that the computer is unable to connect to is farmville.com. Which tells me that it's not the internet connection. I've also disabled the firewall on the router to no avail. The /etc/hosts file in the mac is the following. The /private/etc/hosts file is empty: ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost #255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost Any help is appreciated. Many thanks

I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

  I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on a MacBook that previously had 10.4 on it. i am getting an error after selecting the language. What could be causing a box on the screen that says: Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. It's an Intel MacBook with 1GB of DDR2 memory. 80GB hard drive. It has been formatted now, so there's no going back. According to the System Profiler on the 10.5 boot CD, the MacBook is version MacBook2,1. Thanks!

• OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file. • aTop like tool for OSX

  I'm trying to debug some issues with my Mac. This machine is used as continuous integration server. It stops responding from time to time. I think it could be some software issue, since the machine is working (so i.e. it's not a kernel panic) - that is when I go to the server room I see the login screen and I can move the mouse. Unfortunately I can't login neither directly nor by VNC or SSH. There is a nice tool that helps in debugging this type of problem called aTop. It's like top but with history. Unfortunately it's Linux-only software. Is there any tool that is similar to aTop for OSX?

• Concerns with compressing sensitive data in OSX

  Hi, I have some really sensitive data that I am trying to compress and back up so I can reformat. It's absolutely imperative that nothing happens to these files. I'm a developer so I have very little room for error... plus I'd really hate it if any of my .mp3's got corrupted! File Formats Include... .mp3 .php .js .ai - .psd - .flv (and many more) Is the mac OSX file compression safe enough? Or should I look elsewhere? Is there a more efficient/secure file-format other than .zip (i'm assuming so...)
