  • Memory layout of executable

    - by Ross
    Hi all, When loading an executable then segments like the code, data, bss and so on need to be placed in memory. I am just wondering, if someone could tell me where on a standard x86 for example the libc library is placed. Is that at the top or bottom of memory. My guess is at the bottom, close to the application code, ie., that would look something like this here: --------- 0x1000 Stack | V ^ | Heap ---------- Data + BSS ---------- App Code ---------- libc ---------- 0x0000 Thanks a lot, Ross

  • Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

    - by leoxweb
    I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button. • Downgrade OpenSSL on CentOS 6.5

    - by byyyk
    Application I use requires OpenSSL 0.9.8, which was already installed (0.9.8e to be specific) on my CentOS alongside 1.0.1e which unfortunately is used by default. I tried to change libssl.so.10 symbolic link to point to the older version like so: [mckulpa@nuance-vm ~]$ ldd /usr/bin/openssl /usr/bin/openssl: /usr/lib64/libssl.so.10: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/openssl) linux-vdso.so.1 => (0x00007fff2edff000) libssl.so.10 => /usr/lib64/libssl.so.10 (0x00007f664457c000) libgssapi_krb5.so.2 => /lib64/libgssapi_krb5.so.2 (0x0000003927600000) libkrb5.so.3 => /lib64/libkrb5.so.3 (0x0000003926200000) libcom_err.so.2 => /lib64/libcom_err.so.2 (0x0000003925a00000) libk5crypto.so.3 => /lib64/libk5crypto.so.3 (0x0000003926e00000) libcrypto.so.10 => /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.10 (0x0000003927200000) libdl.so.2 => /lib64/libdl.so.2 (0x000000391a600000) libz.so.1 => /lib64/libz.so.1 (0x000000391aa00000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x0000003919e00000) libcrypto.so.6 => /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.6 (0x00007f664421d000) libkrb5support.so.0 => /lib64/libkrb5support.so.0 (0x0000003925e00000) libkeyutils.so.1 => /lib64/libkeyutils.so.1 (0x0000003926a00000) libresolv.so.2 => /lib64/libresolv.so.2 (0x000000391be00000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x000000391a200000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000003919600000) libselinux.so.1 => /lib64/libselinux.so.1 (0x000000391b600000) [mckulpa@nuance-vm ~]$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/libs:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH [mckulpa@nuance-vm ~]$ echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH /home/mckulpa/libs:/usr/local/Nuance/Recognizer_Service/amd64/lib:/usr/local/Nuance/OAM/x86/lib:/usr/local/Nuance/Common/x86/lib:/usr/local/Nuance/Common/amd64/lib [mckulpa@nuance-vm ~]$ ldd /usr/bin/openssl /usr/bin/openssl: /home/mckulpa/libs/libssl.so.10: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/openssl) linux-vdso.so.1 => (0x00007fff91dbc000) libssl.so.10 => /home/mckulpa/libs/libssl.so.10 (0x00007ffe1af50000) libgssapi_krb5.so.2 => /lib64/libgssapi_krb5.so.2 (0x0000003927600000) libkrb5.so.3 => /lib64/libkrb5.so.3 (0x0000003926200000) libcom_err.so.2 => /lib64/libcom_err.so.2 (0x0000003925a00000) libk5crypto.so.3 => /lib64/libk5crypto.so.3 (0x0000003926e00000) libcrypto.so.10 => /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.10 (0x0000003927200000) libdl.so.2 => /lib64/libdl.so.2 (0x000000391a600000) libz.so.1 => /lib64/libz.so.1 (0x000000391aa00000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x0000003919e00000) libcrypto.so.6 => /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.6 (0x00007ffe1abd9000) libkrb5support.so.0 => /lib64/libkrb5support.so.0 (0x0000003925e00000) libkeyutils.so.1 => /lib64/libkeyutils.so.1 (0x0000003926a00000) libresolv.so.2 => /lib64/libresolv.so.2 (0x000000391be00000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x000000391a200000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000003919600000) libselinux.so.1 => /lib64/libselinux.so.1 (0x000000391b600000) [mckulpa@nuance-vm ~]$ ls -l libs total 316 -rwxr-xr-x. 1 mckulpa mckulpa 321224 05-28 14:59 libssl.so.0.9.8e lrwxrwxrwx. 1 mckulpa mckulpa 16 05-28 15:18 libssl.so.10 -> libssl.so.0.9.8e but all I get is a warning and still the 1.0.1e version is printed out: [mckulpa@nuance-vm ~]$ openssl version openssl: /home/mckulpa/libs/libssl.so.10: no version information available (required by openssl) OpenSSL 1.0.1e-fips 11 Feb 2013 Any ideas how to do this properly?

  • App crashes when adding array data to table cells

    - by bassmandan
    I am trying to create a table view that loads a number of tweets into the table (one per cell etc). I am using NSXMLParser to get the information and have got as far as creating an array with the selection of tweets that I want. However, when I try to add them to the table cells, the app crashes on the line: cell.textLabel.text = cellValue; An NSLog before this shows in the console that the app is getting the correct data, so I am a bit stumped as to why this isn't working. This is the block of code that appears to be having the problem: - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; } // Set up the cell... NSString *cellValue = [statuses objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; NSLog(@"%@", cellValue); cell.textLabel.text = cellValue; return cell;} If it makes a difference, I am using ARC and the latest version of XCode. I'm still quite new to all this, so if I need to give some extra information, let me know. Thanks in advance. • Django + dbxml + Apache = problems. Any solutions?

    - by Jason
    I'm trying to set up a Django application using WSGI. That works fine. However, I am having some issues with part of my Django app that uses BDB XML. My Apache config is as follows: Listen 8000 WSGISocketPrefix /tmp/wsgi <VirtualHost *:8000> ServerName <server name> DocumentRoot <path to doc root> LogLevel info WSGIScriptAlias / <path to wsgi> WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL} WSGIDaemonProcess debug threads=1 WSGIProcessGroup debug </VirtualHost> However, I'm still getting the following error: DB_ENV->repmgr_stat interface requires an environment configured for the replication subsystem [error] child died with signal 11 My environment is opened as: environment = DBEnv() environment.open( <absolute db env path>, DB_CREATE|DB_INIT_LOCK|DB_INIT_LOG|DB_INIT_MPOOL, 0 ) I am using: python 2.6.2 apache 2.2 ubuntu 9.04 dbxml 2.5.13 compiled from source (so libdb-4.8, bsddb3, all that jazz) I see Apache seems to link to libdb-4.6. Is this a problem? ldd /usr/sbin/apache2 | grep libdb libdb-4.6.so => /usr/lib/libdb-4.6.so (0xb7c01000) Updated Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. • phonegap.js crashes android app

    - by peirix
    I'm having this weird problem, where including the phonegap.js file in my project causes the app to crash on both the android emulator and my phone. I got the latest file from GitHub, so I can't see why this isn't working. This happens even if I try to build the sample project that's included in the PhoneGap download... • pinpointing "conditional jump or move depends on uninitialized value(s)" valgrind message

    So I've been getting some mysterious uninitialized values message from valgrind and it's been quite the mystery as of where the bad value originated from. Seems that valgrind shows the place where the unitialised value ends up being used, but not the origin of the uninitialised value. ==11366== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s) ==11366== at 0x43CAE4F: __printf_fp (in /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.7.so) ==11366== by 0x43C6563: vfprintf (in /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.7.so) ==11366== by 0x43EAC03: vsnprintf (in /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.7.so) ==11366== by 0x42D475B: (within /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.9) ==11366== by 0x42E2C9B: std::ostreambuf_iterator<char, std::char_traits<char> > std::num_put<char, std::ostreambuf_iterator<char, std::char_traits<char> > >::_M_insert_float<double>(std::ostreambuf_iterator<char, std::char_traits<char> >, std::ios_base&, char, char, double) const (in /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.9) ==11366== by 0x42E31B4: std::num_put<char, std::ostreambuf_iterator<char, std::char_traits<char> > >::do_put(std::ostreambuf_iterator<char, std::char_traits<char> >, std::ios_base&, char, double) const (in /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.9) ==11366== by 0x42EE56F: std::ostream& std::ostream::_M_insert<double>(double) (in /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.9) ==11366== by 0x81109ED: Snake::SnakeBody::syncBodyPos() (ostream:221) ==11366== by 0x810B9F1: Snake::Snake::update() (snake.cpp:257) ==11366== by 0x81113C1: SnakeApp::updateState() (snakeapp.cpp:224) ==11366== by 0x8120351: RoenGL::updateState() (roengl.cpp:1180) ==11366== by 0x81E87D9: Roensachs::update() (rs.cpp:321) As can be seen, it gets quite cryptic.. especially because when it's saying by Class::MethodX, it sometimes points straight to ostream etc. Perhaps this is due to optimization? ==11366== by 0x81109ED: Snake::SnakeBody::syncBodyPos() (ostream:221) Just like that. Is there something I'm missing? What is the best way to catch bad values without having to resort to super-long printf detective work?

  • Using callback functions for error handling in C

    - by Earlz
    Hi, I have been thinking about the difficulty incurred with C error handling.. like who actually does if(printf("hello world")==-1){exit(1);} But you break common standards by not doing such verbose, and usually useless coding. Well what if you had a wrapper around the libc? like so you could do something like.. //main... error_catchall(my_errors); printf("hello world"); //this will automatically call my_errors on an error of printf ignore=1; //this makes it so the function will return like normal and we can check error values ourself if(fopen.... //we want to know if the file opened or not and handle it ourself. } int my_errors(){ if(ignore==0){ _exit(1); //exit if we aren't handling this error by flagging ignore } return 0; //this is called when there is an error anywhere in the libc } ... I am considering making such a wrapper as I am synthesizing my own BSD licensed libc(so I already have to touch the untouchable..), but I would like to know what people think about it.. would this actually work in real life and be more useful than returning -1?

  • Why would gnu ld link order causes Signal 11 (SEGV) on startup?

    - by Benoit
    We are building a large application in C++ that includes the use of many (static) libraries. We have a problem where the application crashes on startup with a Signal 11, before we even reach main. After much debugging, we have observed that if we explicitly reference an object file so its link order is early, the program crashes on startup. If the file is referenced later (or not referenced at all), the program does not crash. To be clear, there is NO code invoked directly from this object file. However, as it is C++, there might be static objects that do get constructed (it's a CORBA IDL generated file). We use the -Wl,--start-group ... --end-group arguments to multi-pass link the symbols since the libraries are interdependent. Here is a representation of what I mean. This is what the linker's object file order is: Order 1 Order 2 Order 3 foo.o foo.o foo.o ... ... ... main.o main.o main.o crasher.o libA.o libA.o libA.o LibB.o LibB.o LibB.o LibC.o LibC.o LibC.o crasher.o Results: NO CRASH NO CRASH CRASH Does any one have an idea why the linkage order has an effect on the crash? It would be nice if we could force the crasher.o to link later, but we're really after an explanation. Also, is there a way to force the linker to place crasher.o towards the end? Just to add to the fun, in actuality, crasher.o is part of a Library in the --start/--end-group.

  • Ubuntu unattended-upgrades stops apache

    - by Robbie
    This morning i was alerted to the fact that both apache instances serving my app were not responding to requests from my load balancer. I attempted apachectl restart and it said apache was not running. So, i started apache on both instances and got the service up again. I then followed the logs and worked out that both had performed upgrades via the unattended-upgrades package moments before they stopped responding. /var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades.log 2013-07-02 06:30:51,875 INFO Starting unattended upgrades script 2013-07-02 06:30:51,875 INFO Allowed origins are: ['o=Ubuntu,a=precise-security'] 2013-07-02 06:33:57,771 INFO Packages that are upgraded: accountsservice apache2 apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils apache2.2-bin apache2.2-common apparmor apport apt apt-transport-https apt-utils bind9-host binutils dbus dnsutils gnupg gpgv isc-dhcp-client isc-dhcp-common krb5-locales libaccountsservice0 libapt-inst1.4 libapt-pkg4.12 libbind9-80 libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libcurl3-gnutls libdbus-1-3 libdbus-glib-1-2 libdns81 libdrm-intel1 libdrm-nouveau1a libdrm-radeon1 libdrm2 libexpat1 libfreetype6 libgc1c2 libgnutls-dev libgnutls-openssl27 libgnutls26 libgnutlsxx27 libisc83 libisccc80 libisccfg82 liblwres80 libruby1.8 libx11-6 libx11-data libxcb1 libxext6 libxml2 linux-firmware linux-image-virtual linux-libc-dev linux-virtual multiarch-support openssl perl perl-base perl-modules python-apport python-crypto python-keyring python-problem-report python-software-properties ri1.8 ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev sudo tzdata update-manager-core 2013-07-02 06:33:57,772 INFO Writing dpkg log to '/var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades-dpkg_2013-07-02_06:33:57.772399.log' 2013-07-02 06:36:10,584 INFO All upgrades installed I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on Amazon EC2 servers.   • Suspicious process running under user named

    - by Amit
    I get a lot of emails reporting this and I want this issue to auto correct itself. These process are run by my server and are a result of updates, session deletion and other legitimate session handling reported as false positives. Here's a sample report: Time: Sat Oct 20 00:00:03 2012 -0400 PID: 20077 Account: named Uptime: 326117 seconds Executable: /usr/sbin/nsd\00507d27e9\0053\00\00\00\00\00 (deleted) The file system shows this process is running an executable file that has been deleted. This typically happens when the original file has been replaced by a new file when the application is updated. To prevent this being reported again, restart the process that runs this excecutable file. See csf.conf and the PT_DELETED text for more information about the security implications of processes running deleted executable files. Command Line (often faked in exploits): /usr/sbin/nsd -c /etc/nsd/nsd.conf Network connections by the process (if any): udp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 udp: 127.0.0.1:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 udp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 tcp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 tcp: 127.0.0.1:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 tcp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 Files open by the process (if any): /dev/null /dev/null /dev/null Memory maps by the process (if any): 0045e000-00479000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582025 /lib/ld-2.5.so 00479000-0047a000 r--p 0001a000 fd:00 2582025 /lib/ld-2.5.so 0047a000-0047b000 rw-p 0001b000 fd:00 2582025 /lib/ld-2.5.so 0047d000-005d5000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582073 /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc-2.5.so 005d5000-005d7000 r--p 00157000 fd:00 2582073 /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc-2.5.so 005d7000-005d8000 rw-p 00159000 fd:00 2582073 /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc-2.5.so 005d8000-005db000 rw-p 005d8000 00:00 0 005dd000-005e0000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582087 /lib/libdl-2.5.so 005e0000-005e1000 r--p 00002000 fd:00 2582087 /lib/libdl-2.5.so 005e1000-005e2000 rw-p 00003000 fd:00 2582087 /lib/libdl-2.5.so 0062b000-0063d000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582079 /lib/libz.so.1.2.3 0063d000-0063e000 rw-p 00011000 fd:00 2582079 /lib/libz.so.1.2.3 00855000-0085f000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582022 /lib/libnss_files-2.5.so 0085f000-00860000 r--p 00009000 fd:00 2582022 /lib/libnss_files-2.5.so 00860000-00861000 rw-p 0000a000 fd:00 2582022 /lib/libnss_files-2.5.so 00ac0000-00bea000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582166 /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8e 00bea000-00bfe000 rw-p 00129000 fd:00 2582166 /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8e 00bfe000-00c01000 rw-p 00bfe000 00:00 0 00e68000-00e69000 r-xp 00e68000 00:00 0 [vdso] 08048000-08074000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 927261 /usr/sbin/nsd 08074000-08079000 rw-p 0002b000 fd:00 927261 /usr/sbin/nsd 08079000-0808c000 rw-p 08079000 00:00 0 08a20000-08a67000 rw-p 08a20000 00:00 0 b7f8d000-b7ff2000 rw-p b7f8d000 00:00 0 b7ffd000-b7ffe000 rw-p b7ffd000 00:00 0 bfa6d000-bfa91000 rw-p bffda000 00:00 0 [stack] Would /etc/nsd/restart or kill -1 20077 solve the problem?

The crash happens in the following code, when method str() returns: class JniString { std::string m_utf8; public: JniString(JNIEnv* env, jstring instance) { const char* utf8Chars = env-GetStringUTFChars(instance, 0); if (utf8Chars == 0) { env-ExceptionClear(); // RPF throw std::runtime_error("GetStringUTFChars returned 0"); } m_utf8.assign(utf8Chars); env-ReleaseStringUTFChars(instance, utf8Chars); } std::string str() const { return m_utf8; } }; Simultaneous usage of the two C++ implementations could likely be a reason for the crash, but that should not be happening. Any ideas?

  • Did something just get borked with glibc/perl/irssi?

    I was using irssi about 30 minutes ago now on Ubuntu server 12.04. Everything was perfectly fine and then all of the sudden something happened (my guess is a power failure). The box was restarted. When I logged back in and ran irssi, I got the following: *** glibc detected *** irssi: double free or corruption (out): 0x0000000002085a40 *** ======= Backtrace: ========= /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6(+0x7e626)[0x7ffc01d87626] irssi(config_node_set_str+0x98)[0x491768] irssi[0x491f12] irssi[0x491e61] irssi(config_parse+0x52)[0x492112] irssi[0x48ab81] irssi(settings_init+0xd1)[0x48bf81] irssi(core_init+0x79)[0x47a849] irssi(main+0xd8)[0x4167e8] /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xed)[0x7ffc01d2a76d] irssi[0x416b41] ======= Memory map: ======== 00400000-004d0000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 1319015 /usr/bin/irssi 006cf000-006d0000 r--p 000cf000 08:01 1319015 /usr/bin/irssi 006d0000-006dc000 rw-p 000d0000 08:01 1319015 /usr/bin/irssi 006dc000-006dd000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 02078000-02099000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 [heap] 7ffc0025b000-7ffc00270000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 655404 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 7ffc00270000-7ffc0046f000 ---p 00015000 08:01 655404 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 7ffc0046f000-7ffc00470000 r--p 00014000 08:01 655404 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 7ffc00470000-7ffc00471000 rw-p 00015000 08:01 655404 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 7ffc00471000-7ffc0073a000 r--p 00000000 08:01 1320172 /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive 7ffc0073a000-7ffc00746000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 655391 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_files-2.15.so 7ffc00746000-7ffc00945000 ---p 0000c000 08:01 655391 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_files-2.15.so 7ffc00945000-7ffc00946000 r--p 0000b000 08:01 655391 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_files-2.15.so 7ffc00946000-7ffc00947000 rw-p 0000c000 08:01 655391 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_files-2.15.so 7ffc00947000-7ffc00951000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 655392 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_nis-2.15.so 7ffc00951000-7ffc00b51000 ---p 0000a000 08:01 655392 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_nis-2.15.so Followed by many more lines. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
