• Is MediaTemple's (gs) really worth the hassle? [closed]

  I have been hosting my sites with Dreamhost for a while, and although none of them are high-trafic atm, I am going to a launch a Rails app this summer and a couple of other stuff, so I need a serious host. Since my plan ends in a couple of days, I have been looking at alternatives, and because MT has such a good reputation in the webdesign world, I have been seriously considering paying the ridiculous 20$/month for its shared hosting services. That was until I actually read some reviews of it, most of which indicated it is slow and overpriced. So now I'm wondering whether switching over to (gs) would really be a good idea, or if I would be better off paying less money for something like a Site5 or Hostgator shared hosting plan. What is your experience with MT, and particularly their Grid Service? Do you think I should even switch to (gs) in the first place, or should I choose something else from its competitors?

• First of all...

  First of all, this is going to be about my long (hopefully not) and painful (most definitely) climb back into the saddle after spending all of the intervening years between .NET 1.1 and now being a PHB.  I've half-heartedly attempted to get back up to speed a couple of times, but THIS time I actually have some coding to do, AND the geeks are so amped up about all of the new technologies, I really have to do this. So...  Once again, .NET 1.1.  Right now I'm getting ready to work on a site that incorporates Fluent nHibernate, MVC, Spark, and some conventions based coding practices.  Along the way, I'll have to learn about Lambda expressions and other cool stuff that I've missed out on in the last bazillion years since I seriously coded.  Hopefully this will be a guide, or a warning for those of you who feel the need to get off the sidelines and get back into the game. Yeah, that's it for now.

• How to tackle a boss who thinks everybody in this world is wrong except him?

  I mean seriously, how do you tackle a guy who even changes our variable names (even though they are reasonable) and sends back the code (after review) like 4 times? I know for sure I'm not that bad a developer! So many times, he enforces his ideals, which are not even best practices in the industry! I point out to him whatever link I can find on the internet trying to prove my point, but in the end he uses his authority to shut us out. Sick and tired. Frustrated. Do I have any way out other than quitting the job?

• Anyone heard of 'tank tracking'?

  Someone I know told me about some seriously cutting edge blackhat SEO that he called 'tank tracking'. He said that it is some sort of code (he believes written in Python) that 'sits' around the outside perimeter of your visible webpage and listens for an incoming search spider. when a spider enters the page, it traps it in this weird wormhole, making it loop through, I don't know, certain keywords or something.... the result is that a SE like google would consequently give the page a full 100 rating (this person told me Google bestows some sort of scoring app once you've passed a certain number of their exams). A quick google search on 'tank tracking seo', 'tank tracking blackhat seo' and 'tank tracking google' yielded zero results. Let me backtrack a bit and say that I am not interested in utilizing blackhat techniques. I'm just astonished that something like this might be out in the world. Anyone heard of this?

It's partly based on our country's culture, but mostly because our boss is not looking at how good companies are actually going about producing good software/service. • The Apple iPad &ndash; I&rsquo;m gonna get it!

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple.  Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan. • What sort of phone numbers are allowed as the WHOIS contact?

  I'm getting a non-trivial amount of scam phone calls to the phone number contact listed in WHOIS. Could I change it to a premium rate line? If the scammers want to talk to me so much, make them pay for the privilege! Seriously though, are there any restrictions on the type of phone number I can give as my WHOIS contact? Notwithstanding that it is a phone number which can be used to contact the domain holder. In the UK, cell phones are more expensive for the caller to call than land-lines, so I suspect a significant number of people are already listing a "premium rate" phone number.

• Is installing Ubuntu 10.10 still a viable option?

  I fell in love with ubuntu when 10.10 was released. It was the perfect OS for me, but then, the 11 and the 12 series came, and I starting hating it (Pun intended) But seriously, I want to stick to ubuntu 10.10, I have the .iso file with me. I want to go ahead and install it. My question is, since its not currently supported, what problems will I face? Will I be eligible for update? I mean atleast till the time it was supported Can I somehow get security updates and patches Will the latest software available still run on ubuntu 10.10 I don't care much about drivers, as much as I care about python, php, apache, wine and other softwares. Will the software center work?and be updates as well? What issues am I most prone to face?

• MCTS certification (Windows Communication Foundation Development)

I seriously need some advice on getting MCTS certified (Windows Communication Foundation Development) I just cannot go to a MS certification courses as they are very expensive here and far from my hometown. I want to self educate myself and I don't know where to start with. My problem is finding good study materials and sample exam questions. I haven't taken any Microsoft exams before so I have got no idea what they would ask me on the exam (70-513). Can anyone give me some ideas on how to start from scratch? • Throttle and overheating on Dell XPS Studio 1645

  I realise there is an older thread on the very subject but that seems to be pretty dead. I just got a Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop and the fan noise and overheating is pretty ridiculous. This is actually a well known problem with the laptop that is apparently solved with the combination of a BIOS update and the purchase of their 130w charger. I plan on buying this charger as soon as possible, however I've noticed that since installing Ubuntu the fan noise has became more permanent and the overheating is quite a bit worse too. I've had to turn it off twice to let it cool down for an hour or so because it starts seriously affecting the performance. It makes watching things, listening to music or leaving the laptop on while I sleep a real pain. If anyone has some new information on this issue or could help out in anyway at all I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

• Right mix of planning and programing on a new project

  I am about to start a new project (a game, but thats unimportant). The basic idea is in my head but not all the details. I don't want to start programming without planning, but I am seriously fighting my urge to just do it. I want some planning before to prevent refactoring the whole app just because a new feature I could think of requires it. On the other hand, I don't want to plan multiple months (spare time) and start that because I have some fear that I will lose my motivation in this time. What I am looking for is a way of combining both without one dominating the other. Should I realize the project in the way of scrum? Should I creating user stories and then realize them? Should I work feature driven? (I have some experience in scrum and the classic "specification to code" way.)

• Does MS create cross browser compatibility problems on purpose? [closed]

  IE does some weird **. E.G. Supporting the send() method in AJAX with no params. Poor support for XML (well IE9 I've heard things are alot better), but seriously...since MS owned such a huge market share on browsers were they intentionally dropping in problems like this and making it easy to write crap code to give the impression that competing browsers suck to the layman? Update I realize Javascript's limitations caused some of the Xcompatibility problems. I have read comments from Douglas Crockford regarding how javascript was rushed and exploded in popularity before its time...resulting in some of the issues he can't fix. I'm only concerned specifically about MS's intentions...problems they could have fixed, yet did not. Did any of you work on the IE team or know of articles discussing some details?

• Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts when virtualising OS X

  Seriously, I have no idea why this took me so long to actually sort out.So in Windows 8 you have new keyboard shortcuts for accessing search (Win+Q), charms (Win+C), settings (Win+I), etc. Problem is that some of those collide with standard OS X mapping - for example Win+Q will close down VMware, Win+C will issue copy, etc.You can add additional mappings into VMware. Use the Preferences panel to do that. Here you can see that I've mapped Win+Shift+C to Win+C. (OK, that assumes you use a Windows keyboard with a Mac, like I do. If you use a Mac keyboard, you're mapping Apple+Shift+C to Win+C.)

• Tons of problems a new user is encountering

  I've borrowed this laptop from a friend. I wanted to install AdBlock to boost performance. First weird thing was that even though I was on Chrome, Chrome suggested me installing him? So I tried to install ,than it gave me some message about broken dependencies. I Googled and tried to run those commands you guys were suggesting, but than it popped up error messages about everything again. Than I found out that some package called linux image generic is broken, than I tried to find an answer to that, but on the topic it was ” ndk.bhj\spo;ujvsdljvaEOYUFgidgAPIF;hsgvk in other words, I didn't understand anything about it, than there's this thing: E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? Seriously, when I'm trying to fix an error, there is another one. I'm on something called GNOME. Sooo, where do I start?

• How can I give my client "full access" to their PHP application's MySQL database?

  I am building a PHP application for a client and I'm seriously considering WordPress or a simple framework that will allow me to quickly build out features like forums, etc. However, the client is adamant about having "full access" to the database and the ability to "mine the data." Unfortunately, I'm almost certain they will be disappointed when they realize they won't be able to easily glean meaningful insight by looking at serialized fields in wp_usermeta, etc. One thought I had was to replicate a variation on the live database where I flatten out all of those ambiguous and/or serialized fields into something that is then parsable by a mere mortal using a tool as simple as phpMyAdmin. Unfortunately, the client is not going to settle for a simple backend dashboard where I create the custom reports for them even though I know that would be the easiest and most sane approach.

• Wow, no words enough for my disappointment

  Really cannot describe the disappointment felt at this moment.  A month ago there was rumor out there saying Surface tablet will be around $200.  Even though everybody agreed at the time that's not possible, or fair to Microsoft partners, the expectation was set.According to Paul Thurrott (http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/microsoft-surface-pricing-availability-144526), the tablet starts at $499, but without the keyboard cover (Seriously, this is like offering Lincoln with manual shift).  The more disappointed fact is that there is no version that comes with cellular capability.  I was debating whether to get one, but now that decision is very easy.I'll wait.

While I'm very comfortable with it and feel that this WoW is superior to a traditional one, some of my teammates don't share the same opinion. In fact they are very skeptical about "all that agile stuff", and don't take it seriously. As an example, one of the teammates is always late on the meetings, and doesn't really care about it. The management IMO tries not to notice this (maybe because it's a new Wow, and it takes time for the people to get used to it). My question is, how to address this issue not raising a conflict inside the team?

• How to camel-case where consecutive words have numbers?

  Just wondering if anybody has a good convention to follow in this corner-corner-corner case. I really use Java but figured the C# folks might have some good insight too. Say I am trying to name a class where two consecutive words in the class name are numeric (note that the same question could asked about identifier names). Can't get a great example, but think of something like "IEEE 802 16 bit value". Combining consecutive acronyms is doable if you accept classnames such as HttpUrlConnection. But it seriously makes me throw up a little to think of naming the class IEEE80216BitValue. If I had to pick, I'd say that's even worse than IEEE802_16BitValue which looks like a bad mistake. For small numbers, I'd consider IEEE802SixteenBitValue but that doesn't scale that well. Anyone out there have a convention? Seems like Microsoft's naming guidelines are the only ones that describe acronym naming in enough detail to get the job done, but nobody has addressed numbers in classnames.

• What is the most complicated data structure you have used in a practical situation?

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

• What can I do to encourage teams to lighten up? [closed]

  I work with a geographically distributed team (different timezones) with people from various cultures and background. Some of us have never met each other in person but we communicate with each other over phone, chat and email almost on an hourly basis. Most of our meetings and discussions are dead serious and boring. What's worse, any attempt at humor is not very well received because of cultural differences. I feel that we are all taking our work a bit too seriously. We don't shy away from painful arguments, nasty emails and heated discussions when things go wrong but never attempt to develop camaraderie or friendships in better times. I would like to know your experiences with such situations and what, if anything, did you do to lighten things up at workplace.

• How do you stay motivated for hobby projects?

  I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?
