• How to combine a Distance and Keyword SQL query?

  Hi Folks, I have a tables in my database called "points" and "category". A user will input info into both a location input and a keyword input text box. Then I want to find points in my table where the keyword matches either the "title" field in the points table, or the "category" but are within a certain distance from the user's location. I want to order the results by distance. If I remove the "Order By" phrase then it works but I'm still not sure this is giving me the results I want. I also tried the query the other way around with the distance search first but that seems to ignore my keyword. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

  Is it possible (and if so, safe) to create/use a block which takes a double pointer as an argument? For instance: - (void)methodWithBlock:(void (^)(NSError **error))block; Additional context, research, and questions: I'm using ARC. When I declare the method above and attempt to call it, XCode autocompletes my method invocation as follows: [self methodWithBlock:^(NSError *__autoreleasing *error) {}]; What does __autoreleasing mean here and why is it being added? I presume it has something to do with ARC. If this is possible and safe, can the pointer still be dereferenced in the block as it would be anywhere else? In general, what are the important differences between doing what I'm describing, and simply passing a double pointer as a method parameter (e.g. - (void)methodWithDoublePointer:(NSError **)error;)? What special considerations, if any, should be taken into account (again assuming this is possible at all)?

  Hello. I have a CFC as singletone object in Application scope. One of the methods is used for massive data processing and periodically causes the "Java heap space" errors. EDIT All variables inside the method are VAR-scoped, so they should not be kept in the object scope when invokation ended. It can be a bit dumb question for Java people, but I'd like to know how Java garbage collector cleans up the CFC methods memory: only when whole request ends, or maybe right after each method/function invokation? Second option is interesting because it can allow me to split my large method into the few, as one of the possible optimizations.

• Dell 36400 Display issue - "doubling up" intermittently

  I've got a Dell E6400 It's suddenly developed an intermittent fault with the display Every now and again, it seems to boot up with "double vision" By that I mean, its split horizontally, with each half showing the same thing, but with low resolution, and looks grainy - if that makes sense (I will try to get a couple of pictures if I can) I haven't changed any hardware or anything. I have re-built windows, to see if that fixed the problem, it didn't. I've upgraded the BIOS to see if that would help, still same problem. I'm out of ideas :-(

• Constructor in a Interface?

  I know its not possible to define a constructor in a interface. But im wondering why, because i think i could be very useful. So you could be sure that some fields in a class are defined for every implementaiton of this interface. For example consider the following message class: public class MyMessage { public MyMessage(String receiver) { this.receiver = receiver; } private String receiver; public void send() { //some implementation for sending the mssage to the receiver } } If a define a Interface for this class so that i can have more classes which implement the message interface, i can only define the send method and not the constructor. So how can i assure that every implementation of this class really has an receiver setted? If i use a method like setReceiver(String receiver) i can't be sure that this method is really called. In the constructor i could assure it.

• Radix Sort in Python [on hold]

  I could use some help. How would you write a program in python that implements a radix sort? Here is some info: A radix sort for base 10 integers is a based on sorting punch cards, but it turns out the sort is very ecient. The sort utilizes a main bin and 10 digit bins. Each bin acts like a queue and maintains its values in the order they arrive. The algorithm begins by placing each number in the main bin. Then it considers the ones digit for each value. The rst value is removed and placed in the digit bin corresponding to the ones digit. For example, 534 is placed in digit bin 4 and 662 is placed in the digit bin 2. Once all the values in the main bin are placed in the corresponding digit bin for ones, the values are collected from bin 0 to bin 9 (in that order) and placed back in the main bin. The process continues with the tens digit, the hundreds, and so on. After the last digit is processed, the main bin contains the values in order. Use randint, found in random, to create random integers from 1 to 100000. Use a list comphrension to create a list of varying sizes (10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.). To use indexing to access the digits rst convert the integer to a string. For this sort to work, all numbers must have the same number of digits. To zero pad integers with leading zeros, use the string method str.zfill(). Once main bin is sorted, convert the strings back to integers. I'm not sure how to start this, Any help is appreciated.   Im trying to select all the li tags of the document and check if it hasClassName('yes') so if it has, it will remove it. But im having a TypeError: Object [object HTMLLIElement], has no method 'hasClassName' error. • Model Binding an IList of selected items only

  I have an action method setup: public ActionResult Delete(IList<Product> products) And a table of products in my view. I have got Model Binding working so that on submit I can populate the products list. But I would like to populate it with only the products that are selected via a checkbox. I think I could do it by changing the action method to this: public ActionResult Delete(IList<Product> products, IList<int> toDelete) And passing the list of check boxes to the toDelete but I would really like to avoid changing the method signature if possible. Is there a way to pass only the selected items? Or am I going to have to write a custom ModelBinder?

• Why would it be a bad idea to have database connection open between client requests?

  1) Book I’m reading argues that connections shouldn’t be opened between client requests, since they are a finite resource. I realize that max pool size can quickly be reached and thus any further attempts to open a connection will be queued until connection becomes available and for that reason it would be imperative that we release connection as soon as possible. But assuming all request will open connection to the same DB, then I’m not sure how having a connection open between two client requests would be any less efficient than having each request first acquiring a connection from connection pool and later returning that object to connection pool? 2) Book also recommends that when database code is encapsulated in a dedicated data access class, then method M opening a database connection should also close that connection. a) I assume one reason why M should also close it, is because if method M opening the connection doesn’t also close it, but instead this connection object is used inside several methods, then it’s more likely that a programmer will forget to close it. b) Are there any other reasons why a method opening the connection should also close it? thanx

• Nusphere PHPEd: PHP Function Hints Lost Arguments?

  Hi All, My PHPEd suddenly stopped showing arguments and arg order in the hints, and now just shows a basic description of the function. Before I go digging around in the config files, has anyone else had this problem? Thanks! Edit: Sorry, I may not have been entirely clear on this. There is no problem with my own classes, only with the actual php functions. Example: How it used to work: I type a PHP function, say strpos. As soon as I type the '(' at the end of it, I get the little yellow box, showing something like this: int strpos ( string $haystack , mixed $needle [, int $offset=0 ] ) with the first argument bold. If I type it, and then a comma, it bolds the second arg, and so on. This is really nice, since PHP functions are a bit scrambled as far as argument order, and I don't have to look them up every time. How it works now: I type a php function, say strpos. As soon as I type the '(' at the end of it, I get the little yellow box. It says something like "strpos - Returns the numeric position of the first occurrence of needle in the haystack string." There are no arguments shown, which makes the little box basically worthless - I know what strpos does, I just want a reminder of the argument order. I think this may be a problem with the included PHPDoc, which I never use, but may be the source of the data for the hint box. I did recently upgrade to 5.6, but ended up removing it and restoring 5.2. I installed to a different folder, and uninstalled from there, but it may have overwritten something in the original folder? I'm using v5.2 (5220). Thanks!

  I'm using form_remote_tag(:url => {:controller => "home", :action => "search"}, :update => "mydiv"). When I click submit on the form "mydiv" is populated with the error "Template is missing. Missing template home/search.erb in view path app/views". I've tried multiple render options in def search, but they all result in the same error. It looks like the search method is trying to use it's default render even though I'm specifying what I want. I've tried: render 'index' render :text => 'Return this from my method!' Is my url incorrect? Is it not submitting back to my home controller's search method?

In some other application I create several classes derived from the Linq2SQL classes. I'm able to add such a class to EntitySet but the application fails to submit changes. Is there any way around this? • Algorithm possible amounts (over)paid for a specific price, based on denominations

  In a current project, people can order goods delivered to their door and choose 'pay on delivery' as a payment option. To make sure the delivery guy has enough change customers are asked to input the amount they will pay (e.g. delivery is 48,13, they will pay with 60,- (3*20,-)). Now, if it were up to me I'd make it a free field, but apparantly higher-ups have decided is should be a selection based on available denominations, without giving amounts that would result in a set of denominations which could be smaller. Example: denominations = [1,2,5,10,20,50] price = 78.12 possibilities: 79 (multitude of options), 80 (e.g. 4*20) 90 (e.g. 50+2*20) 100 (2*50) It's international, so the denominations could change, and the algorithm should be based on that list. The closest I have come which seems to work is this: for all denominations in reversed order (large=>small) add ceil(price/denomination) * denomination to possibles baseprice = floor(price/denomination) * denomination; for all smaller denominations as subdenomination in reversed order add baseprice + (ceil((price - baseprice) / subdenomination) * subdenomination) to possibles end for end for remove doubles sort Is seems to work, but this has emerged after wildly trying all kinds of compact algorithms, and I cannot defend why it works, which could lead to some edge-case / new countries getting wrong options, and it does generate some serious amounts of doubles. As this is probably not a new problem, and Google et al. could not provide me with an answer save for loads of pages calculating how to make exact change, I thought I'd ask SO: have you solved this problem before? Which algorithm? Any proof it will always work?

• creating a Menu from SQLite values in Java

  I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. In a DBAdapter class I created a function so the user can insert info to a table (This all works fine btw). public long insertContact(String name, String code, String location, String comments, int days, int start, int end, String type) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_CODE, code); initialValues.put(KEY_LOCATION, location); initialValues.put(KEY_COMMENTS, comments); initialValues.put(KEY_DAYS, days); initialValues.put(KEY_START, start); initialValues.put(KEY_END, end); initialValues.put(KEY_TYPE, type); return db.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } It would be the Strings inserted into KEY_NAME that I need to populate that String array with. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks so much for the help guys. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? • t-sql most efficient row to column? crosstab for xml path, pivot

  I am looking for the most performant way to turn rows into columns. I have a requirement to output the contents of the db (not actual schema below, but concept is similar) in both fixed width and delimited formats. The below FOR XML PATH query gives me the result I want, but when dealing with anything other than small amounts of data, can take awhile. select orderid ,REPLACE(( SELECT ' ' + CAST(ProductId as varchar) FROM _details d WHERE d.OrderId = o.OrderId ORDER BY d.OrderId,d.DetailId FOR XML PATH('') ),'&#x20;','') as Products from _orders o I've looked at pivot but most of the examples I have found are aggregating information. I just want to combine the child rows and tack them onto the parent. I should also point out I don't need to deal with the column names either since the output of the child rows will either be a fixed width string or a delimited string. For example, given the following tables: OrderId CustomerId ----------- ----------- 1 1 2 2 3 3 DetailId OrderId ProductId ----------- ----------- ----------- 1 1 100 2 1 158 3 1 234 4 2 125 5 3 101 6 3 105 7 3 212 8 3 250 for an order I need to output: orderid Products ----------- ----------------------- 1 100 158 234 2 125 3 101 105 212 250 or orderid Products ----------- ----------------------- 1 100|158|234 2 125 3 101|105|212|250 Thoughts or suggestions? • ASP.NET: How to initialize when *user control* is initially loaded

  I have an ASP.NET user control that I'm embedding in another user control. This works fine. I need to know the best logic/method for detecting when the control is loaded. In other words, I have some display initialization logic that needs to run when the control is initially displayed. Surely there is a pattern for this. The typical method is to put (!IsPostBack) logic in the Page_Load method of the control. This works great until you end up with a state when the Parent page has already posted back many times. My user control gets added to the page but its display does not intialize properly. I'm hoping to find a way that keeps this logic inside the control, versus various hacking around in the codebehind of the parent page.

  I have a Java class like this: public class Foo { public static int counter = 0; public void bar(int counter) { Foo.counter = counter; } } FindBugs warns me about writing to the static field counter via the instance method bar. However, if I change the code to: public class Foo { public static int counter = 0; public static void setCounter(int counter) { Foo.counter = counter; } public void bar(int counter) { setCounter(counter); } } Then FindBugs won't complain. Isn't that wrong? I'm still writing to a static field from an instance method, just via a static method - no?

  I am trying to create a deep clone of an object using the following method. public static T DeepClone<T>(this T target) { using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream()) { BinaryFormatter formatter = new BinaryFormatter(); formatter.Serialize(stream, target); stream.Position = 0; return (T)formatter.Deserialize(stream); } } This method requires an object which is Serialized i.e. an object of a class who is having an attribute "Serializable" on it. I have a class which is having attribute "DataContract" on it but the method is not working with this attribute. I think "DataContract" is also a type of serializer but maybe different than that of "Serializable". Can anyone please give me the difference between the two? Also please let me know if it is possible to create a deepclone of an object with just 1 attribute which does the work of both "DataContract" and "Serializable" attribute or maybe a different way of creating a deepclone? Please help!
