• Database Table design for Weekdays and Values

  Guys, I would love to here your ideas on this. I am creating a table which will store weekly shift hours for employees. for example: Jon works 9:00am tp 9:00pm Monday , 10:00 AM to 5:00PM on Tuseday etc.... How should i go on designing this table. I thought of 2 options. (1) For every record I can have two lines for AM and PM and have columns for Monday to Sunday ID | ParentID | Type | Monday | Tuseday ......Sunday 1 | 1 | AM | 9:00 | 9:00 12:00 2 | 1 | PM | 9:00 | 5:00 02:00 3 | 2 | AM | 10:00 | 4 | 2 | PM | 10:00 | (2) I can save Preference in XML format in one column ID | Info 1 | |Hours|Monday|9:00 AM - 9:00PM|Monday|Tuseday........|Hours Any better ideas ? • Should I stick only to AWS RDS Automated Backup or DB Snapshots?

  I am using AWS RDS for MySQL. With it comes on backup, I understand that amazon provides two types of backup - automated backup and database (DB) snapshot. The difference is explain in here - http://aws.amazon.com/rds/faqs/#23. However, I am still confuse if should I stick to automated backup only or both automated and manual (db snapshots). What do you think guys? What's the setup of your own? I heard to others that automated backup is not reliable due to some unrecoverable database when the DB instance is crashed so the DB snapshots are the way to rescue you. If I will do daily DB snapshots as similar settings to automated backup, I have gonna pay much bunch of bucks. Hope anyone could enlighten me or advise me the right set up. Thanks. James

  I am trying to write an application for website powered by drupal, basically i would like to create an application only authenticated users are able to use, and users are only allowed to connect with members of the opposite group they are a member of. I have been learning flash builder 4 and learning the basics of actionscript but I am still pretty new to Flash and Flex development. I would like to users to connect using the Adobe Stratus 2 protocol and if possible by authentication on existing site and using membership data from existing mysql database. If anyone could give me a nudge in the right direction on how I should go about creating this application or the next steps i should take, it would be greatly appreciated.

  Hello, In the code below, "created" is a field in a MySQL table. This field is of the type "timestamp" and the default is set to "CURRENT_TIMESTAMP" of whenever a given row is created. In the query below, I would like to create a new variable that equals the present date minus the timestamp of "created", rounded off to units of days.   I'm working on a shortest path a* algorithm in java with a mysql db. I'm executing the following SQL Query approx 300 times in the program to find route connections from a database of 10,000 bus connections. It takes approx 6-7 seconds to execute the query 300 times. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up or any ideas on a different method i can use ? • How can I sync a database driven website to a different server

  I have a website using cPanel on a dedicated account, I would like to be able to automatically sync the website to a second hosting company or perhaps to a local (in house ) server. Basically this is a type of replication. The website is database driven (MySQL), so Ideally it would sync everything (content, database, emails etc.) , but most importantly is syncing the website files and its database. I'm not so much looking for a fail-over solution as an automatic replication solution, so if the primary site (Server) goes off-line, I can manually bring up the replicated site quickly. I'm familiar with tools like unison and rsync, but most of these only sync file(s) and do not do too well with open database connections.

  Hi, I am using data grid view to display items as excel spread sheet in VB.NET. I got a table named CostTypes with column names [CostTypeID, CostType] and values [1,External] and [2,Internal] (These are constant but more values can be added to table). I want to create columns with names of the values[External , Internal] in DataGridView. If I use databiding directly I get columns [CostTypeID,CostType] which is not what I am looking for. If some one could explain how to create columns at runtime in datagridview or how to retrieve data from data base using LINQ so that [External , Internal] turn out to be columns that would be great. The questions are: Context: Large (50M - 500M rows) OLAP Prep tables, not NOSQL, not Columnar. MySQL and DB2 1) Does the order of keys in a PK matter? 2) If the cardinality of the columns varies heavily, which should be used first. For example, if I have CLIENT/CAMPAIGN/PROGRAM where CLIENT is highly cardinal, CAMPAIGN is moderate, PROGRAM is almost like a bitmap index, what order is the best? 3) What order is the best for Join, if there is a Where clause and when there is no Where Clause (for views) Thanks in advance.

• Storing millions of URLs in a database for fast pattern matching

  I am developing a web analytics kind of system which needs to log referring URL, landing page URL and search keywords for every visitor on the website. What I want to do with this collected data is to allow end-user to query the data such as "Show me all visitors who came from Bing.com searching for phrase that contains 'red shoes'" or "Show me all visitors who landed on URL that contained 'campaign=twitter_ad'", etc. Because this system will be used on many big websites, the amount of data that needs to log will grow really, really fast. So, my question: a) what would be the best strategy for logging so that scaling the system doesn't become a pain; b) how to use that architecture for rapid querying of arbitrary requests? Is there a special method of storing URLs so that querying them gets faster? In addition to MySQL database that I use, I am exploring (and open to) other alternatives better suited for this task.

Why does this left join query not give the same result for a query and a table? And how can i get the right results using a query in the left join?

All records are placed as 1 row inside the csv file, how can i fix that ? Also, How would I stop overwriting the same file...I mean When I click on a Button to export the csv, it should check if there is an existing csv file, If there is--Create new one ! • Is it possible to use Sphinx search with dynamic conditions?

  In my web app I need to perform 3 types of searching on items table with the following conditions: items.is_public = 1 (use title field for indexing) - a lot of results can be retrieved(cardinality is much higher than in other cases) items.category_id = {X} (use title + private_notes fields for indexing) - usually less than 100 results items.user_id = {X} (use title + private_notes fields for indexing) - usually less than 100 results I can't find a way to make Sphinx work in all these cases, but it works well in 1st case. Should I use Sphinx just for the 1st case and use plain old "slow" FULLTEXT searching in MySQL(at least because of lower cardinality in 2-3 cases)? Or is it just me and Sphinx can do pretty much everything?

• Rails: has_many association with a table in another database and without foreign key

  Here is my situation. I have model called Account. An account can have one or more contracts. The problem is that i'm dealing with a legacy application and each account's contracts are stored in a different database. Example: Account 1's contract are in account1_db.contracts. Account 2's contract are in account2_db.contracts. The database name is a field stored in accounts table. How can i make rails association work with this? This is a legacy PHP application and i simply can't change it to store everything in one table. I need to make it work somehow. I tried this, but it didn't worked: has_many :contracts, :conditions => [lambda{ Contract.set_table_name(self.database + '.contracts'); return '1' }] Any ideas?

  We have some third party code wherein they do the following 1) Create a User Transaction e.g. txn = (UserTransaction)ctx.lookup( "UserTransaction" ); txn.begin( ); 2) Do some work persisting to the database (via JPA) to a MySQL database 3) txn.commit() They have Exception blocks but NONE of them call txn.rollback. Good coding practice says they NEED to call rollback if an exception occurs but my question is If the txn is not commited, and an exception occurs what is the negative effect of them NOT calling rollback?

I have a table in my DB like this: create_table "pastes", :force => true do |t| t.string "title" t.text "body" t.string "syntax" t.boolean "private" t.datetime "expire" t.string "password" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" end I want to show only the non-expired pastes to people, so I do this: @pastes = Paste.find(:all, :conditions => "expire < '#{Time.now.strftime('%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S')}'") However, even that returns ALL pastes. Not just those that are not expired yet. Can anyone help me? Thanks Oh, changing < to > returns no pastes, not even the non-expired ones :(

  Hello A client of mine has had an HD crash an a SQL DB got corrupt : They did not make backups so they have a big problem. When I tried (an ultimate measure) to DBCC-repair I got the following message. Can anybody help me with this ? Server: Msg 8966, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Could not read and latch page (1:872) with latch type SH. sysindexes failed. Server: Msg 8944, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Table error: Object ID 2, index ID 0, page (1:872), row 11. Test (columnOffsets->IsComplex (varColumnNumber) && (ColumnId == COLID_HYDRA_TEXTPTR || ColumnId == COLID_INROW_ROOT || ColumnId == COLID_BACKPTR)) failed. Values are 2 and 5. The repair level on the DBCC statement caused this repair to be bypassed. CHECKTABLE found 0 allocation errors and 1 consistency errors in table 'sysindexes' (object ID 2). DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

• Problem saving Text file in database using Hibernate

  I'm having a problem saving large text files to MySQL database. If the text file size is around 5KB it successfully saves. If file is 148KB then I get this error from Hibernate: org.hibernate.exception.DataException: Could not execute JDBC batch update These is the SQL shows by Hibernate: Hibernate: insert into file_table (ID,FILE) values (?, ?) And in my hibernate file I'm using java.sql.Blob to store the file. Anyone knows why it fails to save a file size of 148KB but if I open that same file, cut it down to around 5KB, it will successfully save it? I thought the default limit was I think 2GB? This is weird. Thanks.

  Hi all, I can't really find good guidelines through google searches of the proper way to escape variables in URLs. Basically I am printing out a bunch of results from a mysql query in a table and I want one of the entries in each row to be a link to that result's page. I think this is easy, that I'm just missing a apostrophe or backslash somewhere, but I can't figure it out. Here's the line that's causing the error: echo "<a href = \"movies.php/?movie_id='$row['movie_id']'\"> Who Owns It? </a> "; and this is the error I'm getting: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING If you could elaborate in your answers about general guidelines for working with echo and variables in urls, that would be great.
