I've been wondering what command-line aliases (such as in bash, or just even .bat files under Windows) you can't live without?
I'll start off with my favourite:
alias q=exit
I work on a remote machine through ssh. I have a very large text file there (approx. 500 lines) which I usually need to modify, then copy the contents of that file and paste it in my local browser. The way I usually do this is cat filename and then select/copy the ssh output. That takes a lot of time.
I was wondering if there is a utility that will put the remote file's contents in my local clipboard.
I am wondering why websites crash at all.
If a server has too many requests, it
might queue up the request in its
waiting lists and serve it when all
the earlier requests have been served.
That means that the request for the
website will be taken care of,
although it may take some more time
than expected.
Then, how do websites crash due to server overload?
I have a Web Cam thats built into my laptop, no drivers exist for a 64Bit env (Thank you Sony!). Now I am wondering if I can somehow publish the web cam from XP Mode into my Win 7 environment.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
I'm wondering if, first, if the Windows Server 2003 GUI looks like Windows XP? Second, do regular programs that run on XP also run on Server 2003? Or are there special programs written for them? How does all that work? Thanks!
I was wondering if it is possible for the following scenario:
Suppose I have 5 folders in my Microsoft Outlook 2010.
Currently, there are 1 pst file that contain the 5 folders. Each folders contain emails that are grouped according to the folder name.
So, can I have 5 pst file, whereby 1 pst file for 1 folder?
This is because at some other time, I will create new folder(s) and existing folder I may remove from Outlook (but still able to make a copy of the pst file)
I've recently converted to using zsh instead of bash in OSX and was wondering if it is possible to do the following:
When I launch my terminal I would like to start various tabs and have each tab run a different process e.g tailing logs, running ruby scripts etc.
Currently I need to cmd+n multiple tabs and then manually start each process. While this doesn't take long I would like to be able to just launch my terminal and have these various tabs start and run those commands automatically.
Is this possible?
Hello everyone,
I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows.
I am wondering how to make right click on the Mac? When I click on my mouse pad, it only has left click effect.
thanks in advance,
George

I am wondering how to extract rar compressed format file on Mac? Better free or open source software.
Thanks in advance.
Microsoft discontinued NetMeeting a while ago and it is no longer included in Vista or Windows 7.
I have read that there is a hotfix to get it working on Vista, but is there such a thing for Windows 7?
I know there are alternatives available, but I was wondering if anyone has managed to it working on Windows 7? I am just interested in running the client component of NetMeeting, to connect to a meeting hosted on an XP machine.
I'm not clear on exactly what the -R flag does for chflags. I was wondering if someone might be able to help me.
The man page says this:
Recurse: Change the file flags of file hierarchies rooted in the files
instead of just the files themselves.
I don't understand what that means. Can someone tell me what the difference would be between chflags -R hidden and just chflags hidden?
There's an online man page here for reference: http://ss64.com/osx/chflags.html
I have 3 identical machines (hardware wise) that all have RHEL 5.3 installed. 2 of those machines have the Xen kernel and one doesnt. I cannot install nvidia drivers on the ones that have the xen kernel and so I was wondering how I managed to do this and how to replace them with normal kernels. Could this of happened during install time when for example I was queried on certain components to install? (development, virtualization, webserver)
On Windows I have used XBBrowser, which provides a custom version of Firefox suited to using Tor.
XBBrowser provides a button, flush tor circuit, which will setup an entirely new connection and exit node.
I am wondering how to do the equivalent thing on Linux. ALl I can do is restart tor, which does not seem to make any difference.
So, on Linux, how would I flush the circuit?
I'm installing a new server after this weekend, and it musth have both windows server 2008 r2 and linux (probably ubuntu) running, but I'm wondering which one of them I should run virtual. Windows will be used mostly for rdp and for serving asp.net webpages, linux will host some django-applications and a postgreSQL server etc.
We have recently implemented (native) IPv6 in our network. Everything is working very well so far, but our IPv4 network passes all HTTP traffic through Squid (2.7.STABLE6 on Ubuntu Server) + SquidGuard for filtering purposes. This is all managed via a redirect rule on the firewall (via Shorewall).
I'm wondering now if it's possible to do the same thing with IPv6 at all. If it's any help we're using Shorewall6 for IPv6 traffic.
I was wondering if anyone has had any success installing Any/All of the Autodesk Suite (autocad, revit,inventor,3dsmax) and has set them up so that multiple users can log on to the domain without having issues with the applications trying to run from C:\users\usera\appdata......
I am trying to prevent the autocad initial setup using a profile (within autocad) but this didnt work either.
I am using autodesk 2010.
Thanks
I type echo $PATH on the command line and get
/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin
I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty.
I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install.
Update: Thanks to jtimberman for correcting my echo $PATH statement
Hi,
I am currently enjoying the powerful features of screen sharing. I was wondering though, if it would be possible to share my screen with another Mac. I have a Macbook Pro that can connect to a Mac mini (which in its turn is connected to a flatscreen). Is this possible and what must I do to achieve this?
im trying to build a query that has something like this
select
id,
(select top 1 create_date from table2
where table1id = t1.id
and status = 'success') [last_success_date],
(select count(*) from table2
where table1id = t1.id
and create_date > [last_success_date]) [failures_since_success]
from table1 t1
as you can see the [last_Success_Date] is not within the scope of the second query, and i was wondering how i could access that value in other queries without having to rerun it?
I'm trying to install drivers for my laptop after fresh install of Windows 8. From the manufacturer's website, there are many drivers and utilities available. But after running Windows Update(which finds drivers for the hardware on my laptop), I only had to install a few (the ones with Unidentified Device) I'm wondering if this is good enough? or would I skip some important drivers like Chipset Thermo management etc etc that could potentially cause harm to my laptop?
I'd like to setup a rule to block ssh request from EC2 since I've been seeing a large amount of ssh base attack from there and was wondering if anyone knew what their IP ranges are.
I was just wondering if your BumpTop would stay separate on each Spaces screen or on “one” (which ever the BupTop was open on?
I know it probably doesn't work like that - so my question is, do you think it ever will work like that?
Thank you in advance,
Carl
I'm writing a specialised database. It currently sits atop of ext4, with one big file that it reads and writes to.
I'm wondering whether it would be worth forgoing the filesystem and reading and writing directly to the device. I already use O_DIRECT, so as far as I can tell it wouldn't require much of a code change.
What might the risks, advantages and disadvantages of forgoing the filesystem be? Is it likely to improve performance, or harm it?
i am a home user of windows 7 and really like the new features like
jumplists
taskbar thumbnails etc
i am also exploring benefits of homegroup, federated search and since i am a developer intending to start ASP.NET MVC 2 development from PHP, i am thinking a Windows Home Server maybe useful for me.
but what i need, IIS, homegroups etc are offered in Windows 7 too. i am wondering why will i want to have a home server instead? i believe it will offer some benefits i should know of?
