    I have a sun solaris server which die off recently due to voltage issue Checking with sun solaris support personnel the cost is like 5k or 6k per maintence year support. I am wondering whether it is worth the price or should i instead purchase a new solaris server and redo the setup etc. Any advise anyone? And also is there anyaway i can remove the harddisk in the existing solaris server and put into the new server?

  • Collectd agent, Munin master

    For monitoring and graphing of servers and services, I would like to make a setup where collectd is the agent, collecting the data on the server, and munin is on the monitoring server, collecting the data from the agents an process it. Reasons for this setup, is that collectd had a smaller footprint on the servers and munin (v2) has a better frontend. I was wondering if there's an interface for this connection, or if someone has an opinion about why I shouldn't do this.

For each new instance, I install the following softwares: etckeeper which keeps tracks of every changes in /etc shorewall to have a simple setup for firewall rsnapshot which keep incremental backup of important directories cron-apt takes charge of update of the system (or, in my case, send me an email to warn me about new updates) But I was wondering if you administrators have any other wonderful tools for daily management. I'm not talking about remote management (like cfengine) but little tools which help to manage a small number of Linux servers.

    Hi Guys, I am wondering how I can map my development website - hosted via 127.0.0.1:81 - to an external IP address so it can be accessed from outside my PC ?   • Use Dropbox as Offsite Enterprise Backup Solution [on hold]

    For my small company, I'm using Tomahawk Backup as the enterprise offshore solution, as it covers files, databases and Exchange (brick level). The problem is the price... it costs more than 10x the price of Dropbox (and others) for the same space (120GB), and doesn't have de-duplication. So I'm wondering: assuming there is no problem with backing up files only (ie copying the exchange store file and the db files to the Dropbox folder), would Dropbox be suitable as the offsite backup solution?     I am a fan of ReadyBoost and have seen good results using it with my work laptop. I tried something today and connected a second flash drive (2GB) and configured it for use with ReadyBoost. The first is an 8GB configured with 4GB for ReadyBoost. I'm using Windows 7 RC 7100 and was wondering if using more than one ReadyBoost drive helps?

    I wanted to change the icon used for a Custom Library I've created in Windows 7. I found a great article How to Customize the Library Icons in Windows 7 which describes exactly how to do that. However, the article uses shell32.dll and a icon location to do so. I have found an image map detailing the icons location in shell32.dll in Windows XP but was wondering if anyone knew of something similar for Windows 7.

  • Where does $PATH get set in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

    I type echo $PATH on the command line and get /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty. I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install. Update: Thanks to jtimberman for correcting my echo $PATH statement
