  I need to generate arbitrarily large random integers in the range 0 (inclusive) to n (exclusive). My initial thought was to call nextDouble and multiply by n, but once n gets to be larger than 253, the results would no longer be uniformly distributed. BigInteger has the following constructor available: public BigInteger(int numBits, Random rnd) Constructs a randomly generated BigInteger, uniformly distributed over the range 0 to (2numBits - 1), inclusive. How can this be used to get a random value in the range 0 - n, where n is not a power of 2?

I recently saw a small C interpreter that used a very simple struct like the below for all its objects/values in the language: struct Object { ubyte type; ubyte value; }; This struct can hold strings, integers, bools and lists (I think) used in the language the interpreter is working with. How can you get this Object struct to hold all these types?

So I want a type "Length" that behaves just like float -- except I'm going to make it's constructor explicit, so I have to explicitly construct Length objects (rather than have random conversions flying around). I have been able to remove the link using javascript under Batch Processing in Adobe Pro, but the link text remains.   I have a control for uploading an image and above it is an image control. When User clicks 'Upload' button, image turns to an animated image displaying 'WAIT' message, after the image is uploaded, the image source changes to that image.   I have a rather simple hadoop question which i'll try to present with an example say you have a list of strings and a large file and you want each mapper to process a piece of the file and one of the strings in a grep like program. how are you supposed to do that? I am under the impression that the number of mappers is a result of the inputsplits produced. I could run subsequent jobs, one for each string, but it seems kinda... messy?

• Will the memory rise if I loads a same URL for 1000 times in Adobe AIR?

  Hi, Here is the case: I have created a test application which simply loops to load a same url for 1000 times by using HTMLLoader class from Adobe AIR. What I found is that the memory of this app keeps rising. So is this expected? I mean it's the same URL although it get loaded for 1000 times. Does the AVM create 1000 objects behind the scene?

• Using many mutex locks

  I have a large tree structure on which several threads are working at the same time. Ideally, I would like to have an individual mutex lock for each cell. I looked at the definition of pthread_mutex_t in bits/pthreadtypes.h and it is fairly short, so the memory usage should not be an issue in my case. However, is there any performance penalty when using many (let's say a few thousand) different pthread_mutex_ts for only 8 threads?
